Chelsea 1-0 Norwich

  • Goals: Olivier Giroud (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Christian Pulisic (£7.3m)
  • Bonus Points: Cesar Azpilicueta x3 (£6.1m), Antonio Rüdiger x2 (£5.9m), Marcos Alonso (£6.1m)

Christian Pulisic (£7.3m) did just about enough to remain on the Fantasy radar for the remainder of the season as he assisted the only goal of Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Norwich.

It means the American still has attacking returns in all but one outing since the Premier League returned in Gameweek 30+.

Whether his 12.8% ownership believe he can continue that form into the last two games of 2019/20 remains to be seen though, considering Chelsea face Liverpool (away) and Wolves (home) in Gameweeks 37+ and 38+ respectively.

Despite Frank Lampard’s men not quite finishing off Norwich on Tuesday evening, Pulisic’s backers have probably seen enough to justify holding him for those fixtures that do appear rather difficult on paper.

Significant Free Hit usage among top 10k FPL managers for Gameweek 36+

The left-sided attacking midfielder did find himself crowded out at Stamford Bridge at times but managed to carve out a number of openings and, on any other day, could have come away with a double-figure haul.

In the 15th minute, he managed to drive through Norwich’s middle and into the box, denied only by a well-timed block by Ben Godfrey (£4.4m).

Nine minutes later, Marcos Alonso (£6.1m) cut the ball back from his trademark advanced position on the left, which Pulisic ran onto, curling it into the side-netting. This is a shot that the American particularly likes taking, scoring with it as recently as the Gameweek 34+ trip to Crystal Palace.

In the 35th minute, Pulisic went close again, this time chesting down an Antonio Rüdiger (£5.9m) cross from deep, juggling the ball and shooting on the swivel – denied by Tim Krul (£4.6m) tipping the effort onto the crossbar for a corner.

Pulisic finally got a deserved attacking return on the stroke of half-time as he drifted into Alonso’s area to take over the Spaniard’s crossing abilities, dropping a perfect cross onto the head of Olivier Giroud (£6.7m).

The mid-priced midfielder was less effective in the second half but still had an excellent chance to get on the scoresheet in the 74th minute. Giroud held his run and chipped a through-pass over Pulisic’s shoulder, which the American hooked towards goal with excellent technique, denied once more by a sprawling Krul save.

“I was delighted with Christian’s movement to run behind on the little angle because that’s what we weren’t doing enough of in the early stages in the game.” – Frank Lampard

Obviously, Norwich have been offering much more than other defences in the Premier League, but there is still plenty of encouragement to take from Pulisic’s latest display. Next opponents Liverpool have conceded in three of their last four, giving up the joint-third-most big chances in that time, suggesting that Pulisic may get more opportunities at Anfield.

Owners of Giroud may consider holding the Frenchman for the same reason as he really should have come out of the win over Norwich with a hatful of goals.

He was afforded eight shots at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening with Chelsea’s attack geared around getting the ball up to the front-man.

Reclaiming his starting berth from Tammy Abraham (£7.4m), Giroud went about his business relentlessly.

In the 19th minute, Jorginho‘s (£4.9m) ball over the top reached the striker following a poor headed clearance from Godfrey. With the defender still in his back, Giroud tried to lift his shot over Krul but hooked it into the goalkeeper’s arms.

Before finally getting a deserved goal on the stroke of half-time, the former Arsenal man scuffed several crosses into the box and nodded a Willian (£7.4m) corner wide of the post afterwards.

Just before coming off for Abraham in the 86th minute, Giroud put a golden chance just wide of the post. Willian got into space on the right-hand side, flashing his cross in front of goal, which the striker tucked just wide of the post.

While some will say that he should have done better to increase his conversion rate on Tuesday night, the fact that Giroud was so central to everything Chelsea did does bode well for future starts, and the possibility of further attacking returns on the quest for Champions League football.

“Oli will always be alive to those in the box. If you’re playing Olivier Giroud you want to get balls into the box, you need to play to his strengths, and he gets a really good goal. But the link-up (between Giroud and Pulisic) is good.” – Frank Lampard

Either way, the fact that Norwich’s defence allowed yet another team’s centre-forward upwards of eight chances in a match is good news for Jay Rodriguez (£5.7m) in Gameweek 37. The Burnley forward has either scored or assisted in each of his last four Premier League appearances.

Meanwhile, Willian owners may have come out of Gameweek 36+ frustrated at back-to-back blanks but, like many of his colleagues, the Brazilian was unfortunate not to get something at Stamford Bridge.

His corners were not all up to scratch but had Kurt Zouma (£4.7m) and Giroud could have produced better efforts on the end of two of them, Willian would have been looking at a pair of assists, each of them putting comfortable efforts wide or over the bar.

As already mentioned, Giroud was responsible for costing the Brazilian an assist just before he was subbed, while Willian’s direct free-kick in the 88th minute was repelled by Krul.

As the 2019/20 season winds to a close, it was encouraging to see strong Fantasy displays from two cult heroes of the game in Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.1m).

Each of them kept a clean sheet against Norwich, although that is not too much of a surprise, but they also shared in the bonus and were unlucky not to get attacking returns too.

Alonso was by far the more advanced of the two, but Azpilicueta still provided plenty of creativity overlapping with Willian on the right.

He put in several crosses for Giroud and played an exceptional switched ball over the top for Alonso at the back post in the 76th minute. The left-back was unable to steer his header either side of an advancing Krul but reminded Fantasy managers of the advanced positions he is capable of taking all night.

In the 65th minute, it was Alonso who nearly got the assist for Azpilicueta’s effort, the left-back’s cut-back whizzing past Pulisic, Giroud and Willian for his right-sided counterpart to curl a first-time effort just over the bar.

That said, investment in either of these options between now and the end of the season would be a bold decision, with Liverpool and Wolves waiting.

The clean sheet kept on Tuesday evening was just Chelsea’s second of the Premier League restart, and their 49 goals conceded this season is the worst in the top half of the Premier League table.

Chelsea XI: Kepa; Alonso (R James 80′), Rüdiger, Zouma, Azpilicueta; Loftus-Cheek (Barkley 66′), Jorginho, Kovacic; Pulisic (Hudson-Odoi 81′), Giroud (Abraham 86′), Willian.

Norwich City XI: Krul; Lewis, Klose, Godfrey, Aarons; Tettey (Stiepermann 78′), McLean; Hernández (Idah 78′), Rupp (J Martin 89′), Cantwell (Buendía 71′); Drmic (Pukki 78′).

playing without defenders will hurt you

benching headache probably, but really don´t see any issues with it. think i would perhaps have Salah in the mix but maybe hard to fit him in.

defence in 38 can play a huge difference, from the last years we have seen PVA, Robertson, and other going absolutely crazy so nailing one of those hauls can be a huge profit in ranks.

1st do not have any cap?

You have a decent chance of getting closer if your players turn out on the luck side more than your rivals, you need Greenwood to match martial, you need mané to do one of his hauls, cs and attacking returns for Doherty, Cresswell cs and Jimi and Ings to do well. The guy in 1st has 2 players that can really hurt you, and if he has another cap than you that can also mean a swing in points. asume they both have played 3 chelsea assets?

you have 7 players left over them and a you have combinations of cover and slight variation, so i think for 1st this is make or brake. For example, if Wolves goes on for a 3-0 win with Jimi in mix for goals and assist and Doherty either scores or assist that can be a huge point swing.

He captained Willian. Yes they both had triple Chelsea. I should mention they're both on FHs this week too (against my BB).

I agree, I was initially -8, but I did Button > McCarthy for another -4. A Southampton CS and that move pays off, so here's hoping! Doherty assisting Jimi would be huge, or even a Doherty goal! Then hoping Martial keeps his away form as is and stays quiet and need Greenwood to do what he's been doing!

KDb captain can also turn out to e decisive here. 70 pojnts odd behind, i think you need at least to halves it probably, buti have seen margins of 70-80 points being eaten up within the last two weeks. A previous year i were down with 50 before gw 36 and ended almost 100 points ahead. Rival had a shocker in 37 and i led by 20 odd points and he did a -16 which went awful. Even without that mistake form him i would stil have won by 50+

            I think the gap looks worse than it is, I was 41 behind but I did;

Button, Saka, Hayden, Rashford > McCarthy, Foden, Antonio, Greenwood (-12) to set me up for the rest of the season basically. Then obviously he's had three play already. So I want to be minimum 20 behind after this GW. Minimum.

from what i read from Ancelotti Holgate was reported to be close. Puli and antonio have tough fixtures so for bb i would probably want at least one out. if both your defenders on bench is declared fit for 37 i would concentrate on maximising points and those two have ok ish fixtures n 37 in regard to cs possibilites. If so, i would perhaps rather take a hit for those two midfielders, depending if you have fH or not (Antonio 38 is nice looking).

Your assumption that I care about who owns chelsea players or who doesn't is a false one. Slight relief that a relatively well captained player in top 10k is about the height of it. Leaves the door open to beat those teams if, IF, my players do better. This is normal fpl manager stuff so I'm a little confused as to what you're waffling on about.

i think this depends on a lot of things, which combination, how you get them (FH or not) etc. For example, if someone took a risk of getting triple defence, that was 9, 8 and 7. On a FH that looks ok to me. Giroud and Puli 6 points is somewhere in between i guess but before we have any other games to be played being happy or not is premature. It is clearly better than blanks but it depends on so many factors happening later today and tomorrow. I brought in Alonso to play over SHU def or Fredericks, if he scored on that big chance that would have been great, a cs and bonus point is for now ok. And it also gave me better bench to cope with benchings, not that i probably need it but you never know and this one was a risk move who almost paid of handsomely but could turn out be undone by one of my benched defenders.

Main man + defender of a relegation contender scored 37 against the same opposition couple of days ago. It could easily be a Pulisic 15 pointer + Willian 12 pointer which would be detrimental for rankings of non-owners so 6 points cap for attackers was a huge relief for non-owners. At the end of the day, 1.5 players played and scored 8.5 (on average for top 10K) which is quite ok for any game.

Would you swap Ederson & Vardy > Jesus & Pope?

Vardy nailed & getting regular points, Jesus better fixtures but Pep rotation?

    Aurier > Tark?

    Ederson
    Digne, #Aurier#, Boly,
Salah, Kdb, Fernandes, C Sterling, Martial,
    Ings, Vardy

    Button, Greenwood, Taylor, Lamptey.

Thoughts on this bench boost team for GW37? (Mahrez pick dependent on whether he starts this GW).

    McCarthy / Krul
    TAA - VVD - Doherty - Digne - Saiss

    Ings - Greenwood - Nketiah

    Pulisic to Antonio, easy.

    GW37, 1FT:
    Pope
    TAA Doherty Aurier
    Martial Fernandes KdB Mahrez
    Greenwood Nketiah Vardy*
    (Pulisic, TAA, Kiko)

    1) Vardy to Kane/Auba
    2) Vardy to Ings
    3) Vardy to Rodriguez(Norwich, Brighton next and could afford anyone to replace Kiko on gw38)

Yeah the fact that Burnley play Brighton in the last game isn't great. Would mean that I have my Pope, Taylor vs Lamptey and unless it ends 0-0, I'm not doing great.

A bit, but really the object is for you to plot the path to the most points whatever that entails. The flipside to cloning a close rivals team is that a sudden swing - say a big captain haul - can leave you suddenly doing the chasing with very similar teams.

      • 11 Years

Mine are now. Im 75 points off top and in 8th (top 7 out of 60ish pay money). I won't be bringing in players who others already have and will take those out with high ownership.

Pulisic to Stanislas is my proposed transfer this GW.

I had a poor 1st half season and my TV is rubbish (100.6) need some massive amount of luck in last 3 GWs.

I am doing Pulisic to Dilva and Azpi to Dunk after matches tonight -4.

Nah. We all know the risk involved in capping City players. I stand by my decision to go with Jesus and wouldn't regret going with Sterling either. Great shout for the last two weeks well played.

    Pope (Martinez)
    TAA, Holgate, Saiss (Lascelles, Pieters)
    KDB, Salah, Fernandes, Martial, Pulisic
    Vardy, Rashford (Connolly)

Best transfer option for next GW
    Vardy > Jesus ?

So what is a realistic amount of points that someone chasing can expect to make up. I’m 25 points off the top in 2nd place. Do-able?

Id say atm 60, 45 with 2 GW to go and 30 in final game week. More you need absolute fluke.

I've lost a 60 point lead since the restart, at times they've overtaken me but I'm currently about 16 and 29 points clear. That's not safe, particularly if there's chips left. Think with the right captaincy choice someone could easily gain 15 points per game week, if not more.

Depends on how different you teams are. Some players made up 60 points by having sterling (c) and Antonio last week but that's not going to happen every week and you need a lot of luck. I'm chasing 70 points and not confident to be honest but 5 goals for sterling tonight and I'll be back in it

25 is nothing tbf - just go big or go home on captain choice.
I’m chasing 75, but rival captained pulisic, and I have Ings (C) whom he did not field this GW. Feeling great atm!

Hell, yes. I made up 40+ last week alone. All about the captain

David Silva captain and having Jesus and Sterling is giving me panic attack till i see the city lineups. High chances of slipping down in ML with me being first by just 27 points.
