Fantasy Premier League managers may now find it harder to choose between Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) compared to last season.

The pair spent the 2019/20 campaign with a huge disparity between their prices, the Belgian starting £2.5m cheaper than his English colleague.

By the end of last season, he had risen £1.1m while Sterling ended it as he begun, priced at £12.0m. However, now the two players share the exact same price-point, budget concerns have become irrelevant and it is now a straight shoot-out between them.

READ MORE: FPL release first batch of player prices

De Bruyne comes into the new campaign on the back of a record-breaking 2019/20 season, registering 251 points, more than any other player.

That was the midfield maestro’s best-ever FPL score, after he involved himself in 36 of Manchester City’s goals. 13 of those were his own, his highest-ever tally in a Premier League season (13) while he equalled Thierry Henry’s record for most assists in one season (20, rising to 23 when adding Fantasy assists into the equation).

Surely with statistics like that, De Bruyne is still an auto-include for the new season? Right?

The Belgian is certainly an admirable option for 2020/21, a view we won’t dare try to disagree with, but it is worth saying that Sterling could be set for a big season based on the way he finished the last.

While De Bruyne registered an impressive 10 double-digit hauls in 2019/20, Sterling came very close to his colleague, posting a total of nine.

Five of those came during Project Restart where the Englishman outscored his Belgian colleague by 86 FPL points to 73. De Bruyne’s score of 19 on the final day made the comparison more respectable than it could have been too. Going into Gameweek 38+, Sterling was ahead by 78 to 54.

The question is whether or not Sterling can sustain such form across a whole season. He will need that if he is to rival De Bruyne for FPL value and backing. The fact that only the Belgian (2,798) and Ederson (3,072) recorded more minutes played among Manchester City players than Sterling last season (2,660) is an encouraging start – although both players could miss the start of the campaign if they are granted a delay because of Champions League involvement.

But in order to fully assess his potential as a premium set-and-forget midfielder, we need to look at Sterling’s underlying data.

As this article uses information from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

How do KDB and Sterling compare for goal threat?

Look like FPL have given each club a player price for them to reveal on their own social media accounts in order to build interest in FPL, FPL Twitter account only have 1.1m followers and the clubs official accounts obviously have a massive reach.

He said below it "I'm just bantz-ing"

They play for the same team, so fixtures aren't really a factor in the comparison. Not unless you monitor which teams are vulnerable to set pieces or giving away pens, then that may favour KDB...

      1. FPL Theorist
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 11 months ago

Some stats I saw suggested that Sterling is more of a flat-track bully, KDB more fixture-proof. So maybe own both during great fixture runs, but only KDB during tougher runs?

            Might look into that.

But in the examples he gave below, it looks like Sterling is the only one who varies wildly between home and away, so he could just be a temporary outlier.

I know it's been said before but KDB being cheaper than Mane (and Salah too) is a pretty strange decision.

they know at least 5 of his returns were fluky deflected assists and they think he isn't on pens with Aguero back

Outscored Mane comfortably (with or without pens) yet he's still 0.5 cheaper. Oh, and he's still on pens and Mane isn't, so higher potential there.

(for the record btw, Mane's career penalty record is scored 2, missed 4 😀 )

              • 11 Years

                5 years, 11 months ago

Sure, my main point was how it's inexplicable that KDB is cheaper than Mane though (Salah to a lesser extent as I said originally). Was expecting Mane to be 0.5 less than Salah and 0.5-1 less than KDB personally.

Yeah I understand. I still think KDB should be more expensive than (or at least the same as) Salah but it's Mane that's the main surprise here.

                      • 11 Years

it depends on pens for me, if KDB loses them then I'd much rather have Salah at the same price (if they have similar fixtures) - but I'm seriously considering a Liverpool back-3 so probably don't care too much either way

I don't see why KDB would lose penalties but yes, without them I'd rather have Salah too.

The Aguero factor: Kun is a far better finisher than Jesus. Would Raz lay on more assists if he knew Kun would finish them off? I don't think I'd be put of Raz if Kun was fit.

Tinkering is on. Lots of my own price predictions here.

    (4-5-1)

    Fabianski(4.5) 4.0 = 8.5

    TAA(8.0) - VVD(7.0) - Doherty(6.5) - Vinagre(5.0) - 4.0 = 30.5

    Salah - KDB - Bruno - Greenwood(7.0) - Podence(5.5) = 46.5

    Adams(5.5) - 4.5 - 4.5 = 14.5

    Adds up to 100.0

    Thoughts?

Thoughts are you might need to make up 1m-1.5m on Greenwood...you might get £1m of that with TAA/VVD if you're lucky.

Vinagre is interesting - don't know if they'll price him at £5.5 with Jonny's injury...

    Soucek 5m is interesting.

Think he had a reasonable goal scoring record at prague..

352 - with soucek as 5th mid could be an option

Always thought 10.5 was where Bruno would land... 14 games just not enough to go any higher

Thought Salah & KDB would each have been 0.5 more though - good decision to go with the 12.0 & 11.5 imo

KDB & Bruno sorts captaincy nicely when Utd & City get back up running

    Friday 14th Price Reveals

Lots of price reveals today, and whenever I thought they were done they've been adding more so this list will constantly update.

    Kevin De Bruyne - Midfielder - £11.5m
    Mo Salah - Midfielder - £12.0m
    Raheem Sterling - Midfielder - £11.5m
    Nick Pope - Goalkeeper - £5.5m
    Bruno Fernandes - Midfielder - £10.5m
    Sadio Mane - Midfielder - £12.0m
    Jamie Vardy - Forward - £10.0m
    Tomas Soucek - Midfielder - £5.0m
    Adam Lallana - Midfielder - £6.5m
    Pablo Hernandez - Midfielder - £6.0m
    Timo Werner - Forward - £9.5m
    Jordan Ayew - Forward - £6.0m
    Adama Traore - Midfielder - £6.5m
    Sander Berge - Midfielder - £5.0m
    Richarlison - Forward - £8.0m
    Danny Ings - Forward - £8.5m
    Christian Pulisic - Midfielder - £8.5m
    Chris Wood - Forward - £6.5m

Some really interesting prices in that group and a number of good options to think about.

    Who are you seriously considering?
Who would you have priced differently?

Salah/Mane, Soucek and Vardy all very much up for consideration. Not even thinking about man utd or city assets until fixtures revealed. Wouldn't change any prices, because it's their game and they know what they're doing. Except with Lundstram.

As above, KDB should definitely be more expensive than Mane, and at least the same as Salah. Fernandes cheap given potential (and all the penalties they get) but understandable. Others pretty much spot-on.

      1. Pooodle

I think KDB slightly cheaper than Mane is fair considering his goal threat is less.

Pope is a non-starter if keepers like Allison, Ederson, DDG are the same price (or even 0.5m more)

Yeah they were 6m last season to be fair so I would imagine that's locked in again. I'd much rather pay 6m for Allison than 5.5m for Pope though

Goalkeepers rely on save points and bonus and that's why we see the likes of Henderson's and pope scoring points over a season than many premiums.

    4. Pooodle
      • 17 Years
      5 years, 11 months ago

Nice to see that the prices are generally sensible. Seemed a lot on Twitter etc were expecting everyone to be more expensive and completely out of sync with previous years - I never really understood why because if the Liverpool and City mids were all 12.5+ and Bruno was 11.5+ it would be completely unaffordable.

Of this list, I'm put off with Vardy as I think 10m is quite a lot when Aguero will probably only be 1m more.

Salah and Sterling both look attractive with a price drop from last year though in particular.

      Well that's killed Pope then?

Only way I'd be interested is if there were absolutely no tempting 4.5s and some mediocre 5m keepers - very unlikely in other words.

That being said, I think it's a fair price. Couldn't put him anywhere else.

Pope was tough. 5.0 and he would be in most teams - boring. 5.5 and in no team - disappointing.

He has outscored Chelsea keepers every year. Why are people obsessed with having players form the big 6?
Pope is definitely a better asset at Burnley than in Chelsea.
He will almost never got save points/bps if he goes to Chelsea

      4. Pooodle
        • 17 Years

Interesting thought - if you're aiming for something like 2300-2400 points over the season then you're hoping to get 23-24 points for each 1m at the start.

So if Pope can outscore a 4.5m keeper by 35 points then it's great value.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years

And of course he outscored all the 4.5 keepers by over 35 points.

Not quite true. You’re assuming a base of 0 points for 0m, whereas the reality is closer to 0 points for 64m (8*4.5m + 7*4m). So with the remaining budget and a target in the range you said you’d need 65 points per extra 1m at the start. In context, Krul at 4.5m would’ve been better than Pope at 5.5m (only 61 points difference)

I actually think double Mane/Salah would be a good shout to start and then you can very easily get a City or United mid in once they come back.

Surely the question is will that extra 1m saving, on a 4.5GK, spent on KDB or Sterling (11.5) get 35 points more than Bruno (10.5)?

        1 million for 35 points.
Not many 1 million upgrades would give you 35 points more.

Out of those, Salah, Bruno, and one of KDB/Sterling.

Mane has been priced out of contention (at least in terms of a direct comparison with Salah - might be a case for both at some point)

I'm not surprised Vardy is £10m, but I don't think he's viable at that price given the alternatives in midfield.

Soucek is a weird one - too expensive for the bench, maybe not good enough to be a regular starter. Depends whether the enabler is needed!

Probably one of Sterling/KdB, but depends on Auba price. Might target City with fixtures around no Europe blocks.

If the Rashford/Martial position swap happens then I’d prefer a

Where did the Chris Wood price announcement come from?
It doesn't appear to be on FPL Twitter, whose last announcement was that there would be no more price reveals today.
And is he still possibly moving to Lazio?

and if everyone keeps posting things like "that's way too expensive" and "no way im putting him in for that price" then tomorrow they can say "whoops we accidentally added .5 on to wood, should have been 6m, what are we like!"

Thanks. So Burnley presumably jumped the gun in announcing a price that they weren't supposed to reveal till tomorrow?

Possibly. Their admin doesn’t seem the brightest. He dragged the Norris signing out today over about 6 tweets.

Pretty fairly priced most of them, might still go for Pope, if a budget option isn't good enough, coz Pope is regularly gonna get you 3-8 points per game (depending on CS)
Looking forward to some defender prices today

Lol. I bet they planned to do only 5 but the trigger-happy intern in charge of their twitter account had other ideas.

Because if they were originally planning more than 5, the '5 more to be revealed tomorrow' doesn't make much sense.

That’s 8 today. Maybe 2 more for a nice round number.

It seems FPL did 5. Now the clubs do 5.

            No you're right - I can't count. 6 from FPL, 4 from the clubs.

Last seasons FPL website hasn't gone down for its annual maintenance yet. Completely new website on the way ? There was plenty of time to develop it during the Covid break.

If it's not going to be released until mid to late last week, there is still enough time for annual maintenance. I doubt they'll spend time for a new website development.
