Fulham have made a swift return to the Premier League, bouncing back to the top tier of English football after just one year away.

The Cottagers went up after defeating Brentford in the Championship play-off final at the beginning of August and join Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion as the three newly promoted sides in the top flight next season.

What can Fantasy managers expect from Parker and the Cottagers in 2020/21, then?

Our three-part series on Fulham will feature an in-depth examination of their defence and attack but we begin with a closer look at the man in the dugout.

To aid our analysis, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout frequenter, Fulham fan and co-host of the excellent Always Cheating podcast, Brandon Kelley.

WHAT IS PARKER’S BACKGROUND?

Parker has plenty of top-flight experience from his playing days, with stints of various length at Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham.

The ex-England international called time on his on-the-field career at the age of 36 in 2017, subsequently returning to Spurs to coach their under-18 side.

Moving back to west London in 2018, Parker served as a first-team coach to both Slavisa Jokanovic and Claudio Ranieri in their spells in the Fulham hot seat before taking temporary charge himself when Ranieri was fired in February 2019.

Some improved displays and three successive wins in April weren’t enough to keep the Cottagers up but they were enough to convince owner Shahid Khan to name Parker permanent boss, with the retired midfielder signing a two-year deal.

His first full season as a manager was a successful one, with the west London side never out of the top half from the Championship equivalent of Gameweek 2 onwards.

The Cottagers indeed held a play-off place from late-November right the way through to the end of the season before sealing promotion at Wembley.

WHAT STYLE OF FOOTBALL DOES PARKER USE?

Parker’s preferred tactics, at least in terms of basic formation, are similar to those of Slaven Bilic.

A 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 were Fulham’s most-used set-ups in 2019/20, which were systems the West Bromwich Albion manager turned to in the Baggies’ promotion-winning campaign.

Brandon Kelley explains:

Parker frequently played a 4-2-3-1 last season, with Mitro as the lone striker and Harrison Reed and Tom Cairney as a midfield pivot. On occasion, Josh Onomah would push up to play off of Mitrovic for a 4-2-2-2.

You’ll see a fair amount of overlapping with the full-backs and wide-midfielders, but it has to be said that Fulham haven’t been a particularly fast side since the departure of Ryan Sessegnon. They will struggle to beat many Premier League clubs for pace.

For Parker, it’s all about one thing: possession.

The Cottagers were ball-hoggers extraordinaire last season, registering more passes and short passes than any other club in the English second tier.

Their passing success rate of 83.2% was the best in the Championship and was beaten by just the top four and Arsenal among Premier League sides last season.

Only Leeds averaged more possession than Fulham (58.3%) in the second division of English football last season.

From an FPL (and Sky) perspective, that’s a good thing when it comes to bonus points – although retaining the ball in the Premier League will be a much stiffer test.

Some cynics have suggested that Parker’s crab-like qualities as a player are now apparent in his Fulham team, with there being a lot of passing for passing’s sake and not much penetration at the end of their slow build-up play.

It seems an odd slur given that that they boast the league’s top goalscorer in Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) but the criticism is not completely unfounded, with the Cottagers, despite being ranked first for passes, a lot further back when we assess other attacking metrics.

Rank v other Championship clubs
Passes1st
Goals scored7th
Shots5th
Shots in the box11th=

Despite the safety-first approach, they did concede on more occasions (48) than Leeds, West Brom and Brentford.

The Cottagers did beat all bar the champions of those teams for clean sheets (17), at least.

If there is one thing that Parker is unquestionably good at, it’s man-management.

The emotional scenes at the end of the win over Brentford were a testament to that, with play-off hero Joe Bryan saying of his head coach:

He’s very good at motivational talking. When he talks, everyone respects it – he’s been there and done it. It’s good to play for a manager you know is speaking from personal experience of being a player.

Always Cheating’s Brandon Kelley indeed told us:

Fulham suffered a number of key injuries throughout the season, perhaps most notably losing Mitrovic for their play-off run.

As a result, Parker has been forced to get more from his second-choice players, and Onomah’s impact at the end of Fulham’s play-off run is a true testament to Parker’s ability to adapt and motivate.

Parker will face a number of different challenges in his first full season in the Premier League, so I suspect he’ll be flexible throughout, especially given he’s too young in his managerial career to be stuck in his ways.

DOES PARKER LIKE A SETTLED SIDE OR WILL HE ROTATE?

Rotation: the scourge of the Fantasy manager.

The likes of Pep Guardiola and Graham Potter make life a nightmare for FPL bosses and team news writers alike and many of us long for a top flight full of Sean Dyches.

The attacking midfield and wide positions look particularly at risk for Fulham, with Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m), Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.5m) and Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m) having made 28 substitute appearances between them.

Always Cheating co-host and Fulham fan Brandon Kelley told us:

Parker will happily rotate but Fulham’s squad won’t be especially deep, so I don’t expect we’ll see rotation among key players like Mitrovic or the entire defensive backline.

It was interesting to see Parker start Denis Odoi at right-back against Brentford in the playoff final, which not many supporters had anticipated, so that does speak to Parker’s desire to pick the right players for the right jobs in the right matches.

On the whole, wide attackers like Knockaert, Reid, and Cavaleiro will be most prone to rotation.

HOW DOES PARKER HANDLE THE PRESS?

A likeable character, Parker gives off the air of an honest sort in his post and pre-match interviews.

Those are the types of managers we Fantasy managers love, of course, especially when it comes to team news.

Always Cheating’s Brandon Kelley echoed those sentiments, although did cite a cautionary tale from the play-offs:

The press adores Scott Parker for many reasons: he’s handsome, he’s well-dressed, he’s humble, he’s English, and he’s generally pretty open and honest at pressers.

Just watch this interview given after the 2-1 Brentford win for a sense of how utterly wholesome he can be.

I believe Parker to be fairly forthcoming. But, you could point to his handling of the press with Mitrovic’s injury during the EFL play-offs as an example of him being less so. I believe that was a special circumstance, though, and don’t expect to see much of that this coming season.

WHERE MIGHT PARKER STRENGTHEN IN THE SUMMER AND WHICH PLAYERS ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING THEIR PLACE?

Fulham likely won’t make the same mistakes they did two years ago when they spent big on overpriced players ahead of their top-flight return.

Some level of investment will be needed, however, with a right-back and some attacking midfielders potentially on Parker’s shopping list according to our Fulham correspondent, Brandon Kelley:

Fulham desperately need a right-back as Cyrus Christie won’t be able to handle that position in the top flight. Wild rumours had linked 36-year-old Branislav Ivanovic to Fulham, perhaps looking for some experience to settle the backline (and join Mitrovic in some Serbian hijinks, no doubt), but after the disastrous signing of Andre Schurrle in 2018, I really hope Fulham will think twice before buying another Chelsea retiree.

Harrison Reed really impressed as a defensive midfielder on loan from Southampton. With Reed in front of the defence, Fulham appeared much more stable and found it easier to link with their attacking players. If that chemistry with Reed was as evident to Scott Parker as it was to every Fulham supporter, then the club will be desperate to buy him permanently off of his parent club.

In the attack, Fulham could use a bit more Premier League experience just behind Mitrovic. Some rumours have linked Ryan Fraser to the club, and I think it’s correct that Parker will be looking for some speed that will be able to break defensive lines and feed balls into the centre-forward.

Bobby Reid, Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro are all players who I would expect to sit on the bench if the right signings are made. Lesser-known players like Onomah and Kebano have at least proven they can adapt to Scott Parker’s tactics and play key roles in key moments, so they may stand a better chance of featuring throughout the coming season.

And if you’re expecting more spot-kick drama with Aboubaker Kamara, don’t hold your breath – he will become surplus to requirements.

Our huge thanks again go to Brandon for his time and insight. Keep your eyes peeled for two more Fulham articles in The Promoted series, which will be landing soon.

Dallas isn't completely nailed as he's originally a winger and Bielsa is looking for a new LB.
Vinagre looks nailed while jonny is out but his attacking stats aren't exciting

Vinagre short term and C. Taylor long term are by far the best options in my opinion.

Yes Leeds full backs are attacking but don’t expect Leeds to do well enough for them to keep CS anywhere near the level of Wolves or Burnley and attacking output likely to be significantly lower compared to Championship.

He doesn’t but he plays in a team which is among the top for CS kept in most seasons. The same can’t be said about rest of the 4.5s.

I didn’t mention anything about Taylor having attacking threat in my post above. What I said is while on paper Leeds full backs have better attacking threat, those are based on Championship stats so Taylor and Vinagre are better options regardless.

So he still has 5 pen goals last season on a net basis which would equate to something between 25-35 points.

Are you thinking of dispensing with TAA?

Baldock, Egan, and Dunk started last season on 4.5m and scored 142, 133, and 128 respectively. Predicting the correct three defenders is a bit tricky though. Don’t try this at home.

TAA will be extremely highly owned. He is also a defender who is capable of a 24 point haul. There's not a chance he won't be in my team.

      He’s essentially an underpriced mid
He was what 30 pts better than every defender last year
And his teams defence underperformed in terms of CS’

I think as long as he’s on set pieces and injury free
Not owning him will be a tough watch
Although VVD could light the season up with a goal return and that 1m saved would look lovely

Also with TAA you have to play him every match no matter what, meaning away to top 8 clubs.
If you have loads of 4.5m defs then you can bench them for the bad fixtures and bring them in for the easy ones where clean sheets and attach returns more likely.

Also it's 3.0m out of your midfield. Which means downgrading someone like Son for a 6.0m

Just as long as TAA doesn't repeat what he did in these top 8 fixtures this season for example:

            Home to Arsenal (assist)
            Away to Chelsea (goal)
Away to Leciester (goal + 2 assists + cleansheet)
            Home to Wolves (Cleansheet)
Home to Man Utd (assist + Cleansheet)
            Away to Wolves (assist)
Home to Chelsea (goal + assist)

In only 14 games this season (not 20-ish!) has TAA has failed to deliver a return (Goal, Assist or Cleansheet)

5 of those 14 came after they had Liverpool had won the league...
7 of those 14 came while Allison was out injured...

It wouldn't just be the highest scoring 4.5 def though as you would have rotation pairings.
So it would be Son + best 4.5 def rotation pairing vs TAA + best 6.0 mid.
The 6.0 mids look rather naff. Probably Trossard best option.

    What’s the better midfield/attack combo?
A: Greenwood, Salah, Auba and KDB.
    Antonio, Mitro and Bamford.

    B: Foden, Fernandes, Auba, KDB.
    Werner and Mitro.

C: Greenwood, Rashford, Auba, KDB. Werner and Mitro.

Basically. Bruno vs Greenwood + Rashford. And Salah vs. Werner.

Considering going 4-3-3 with low-priced mids as my backups.

    Pope - Button
    TAA - VvD - Robertson - Doherty - 4.0
    de Bruyne - Grealish - McNeil - 4.5 - 4.5
    Martial - Jimenez - Ings

    Thoughts?

Maybe drop martial for Antonio and that will free up some funds to improve the mids.

The chasm between Pep and Klopp in CL knockouts grew even wider last night.
What on earth was Pep thinking. Gripped by fear of a lesser side. So much so that he changed tactics, enforced unwanted conservatism on his players, shackled them, benched briliant players and over-thought the seemingly straight forward task of beating a mid table French league team.
I think he's so far up his own arse that he believes he can make one-off radical tactical changes for one match and it will work because it's worked in his head lying in bed the previous night. It's different on the pitch. Players are humans not tactical pawns in the Peps mad head.

Klopp plays to his own teams strengths every single time. Its quite simple when you write it down like that.

Won't make any difference to FPL, City will still blow teams away most weeks but still worth talking about, even just to lol at Pep.

Agreed. Posted this yesterday - this is a French journalist's analysis, which says a lot of the same things:

On whether Pep Guardiola overthinks in the Champions League:

"Massively. Sometimes it works, like against Real Madrid in Spain. Great, that works. But too many times it hasn't worked.

It didn't work away against Spurs last season, it didn't work against Monaco three years ago because he messed up the second leg.

Why don't you play your normal team in a normal formation tonight against a team that is far weaker than you? Why do you need to adapt your formation to the opposition?

It just doesn't work like this. He has to take the blame. He has to take responsibility. It has happened too many times.

He has to step up and say sorry, I keep trying to come with ideas and it's just not working. If i was a City fan tonight I'd be really cross with what Pep Guardiola has done. He messed it up big time."

Sir Alex and Mourinho tended to set up differently in cup games and it worked well for them. Sir Alex used to make some bizarre decisions at times playing players out of position, but it always seemed to work perfectly...

It's easy to take one successful UCL team, like Liverpool 18/19, and compare it to a single match, but I think there have been enough examples of success using different methods to say there's no clear winner yet.

I mean if Sterling scored the tap in, they would have been level. In a one-off game, it can be fine margins.

Let's not forget Liverpool and Klopp were knocked out earlier in the competition with their methods.

Sorry, but ref your last point there. Liverpool under Klopp, champions of Europe 2019, runners-up to Real Madrid in 2018 were knocked out this year by elite European opposition in Atletico Madrid. Not Lyon, Spurs or Monaco.

There were no fine margins last night, they conceded three poor goals and missed a couple of decent chances. First 35 mins they were terrible in an unfamiliar system and had to chase the game.

This is a recurring theme with Pep, he over-thinks these big UCL games tactically and is beaten by seemingly weaker opposition. Klopp might change personnel in his midfield 3 to suit a particular opponent, but he won't completely change the system / shape against 'weaker' opposition in these cup ties like Pep does.

I'd upvote this reply twice if I could.
On what planet was I comparing one match from Pep Vs one successful CL winning team. That Gigs Boson reply is truly bizarre if not entirely surprising given his Man Utd and Alex bias. "It always seemed to work perfectly" two European Cups in 26 years ... okaaaay then.

Pep has failed multiple times Vs on paper inferior teams in knock out phases.
Klopp is very much the opposite. I don't have the stats but I'm sure they're easy to find.

Probably a stupid reply yeah. I do that a lot.

But I'm just trying to put a drop of doubt in this ocean of certainty. I'm not arguing one way or another. I just find it weird that so many people know so much more than top managers.

Is it possible Pep understands football more than we do? I'd say there's a chance...

Of course Pep is a very good manager and coach.
Of course he knows more than you or me.
Of course armchair managers are allowed give their opinions. That's what makes following football so good.

He is falling short in the CL on an alarmingly regular basis. If that continues he can't be placed amongst the all time greats.

Yeah, I agree, he's nowhere near the pantheon of all time greats.

The players are the limitation on what a manager can achieve. (A manager adds up to just 15% according to Soccernomics) The current City team is probably short in some areas, Kompany, Sane not replaced, Aguero, Silva, Fernandinho ageing... but he should have beat Lyon at least. Wasn't good enough performance, I agree.

ASM plays for a Steve Bruce Newcastle side, no matter how creative he is I just don't see the appeal. Soucek is decent but people putting him as a 4th midfielder prepare to be disappointed is my opinion. He was 4.5m last season, a 0.5 less price and I didn't see him in anybodies team.

Every draft I have done so far has included TAA, Robertson and VVD

Its ridiculous that we have 6.5m to 7.5m defenders scoring 200 points.

VVD will score similar to Ings and Jimenez and I would bet comfortably outscore the 6.5m strikers.

I don't plan on captaining my strikers so set and forget the Liverpool trio will surely net me more points at a cheaper base point?

    Anybody else going for this?

    4.5 4.0
    TAA Robertson VVD Vinagre 4.0
    KDB Fernandes Greenwood Foden 4.5
    Ings Jimenez 4.5

As you can see there are no weak points there, Greenwood and Foden rotation withstanding. You can even afford a decent forward line.

Trying to fit in 3 or 4 heavy hitters. You only need two. You can only captain one at a time.

I feel that in isolotion a trio of Robertson, Greenwood and Jimenez will score more points than say Ayling, Salah and Antonio.

Anybody else going for this or something similar? I guess it requires patience.

150 points if you're lucky. Unless you transfer them in at the right time.

Changes will be made if transfer window activities and preseason discoveries affect Nyland (Button), Vinagre (Aurier or 4.5), Mitchell (Taylor) or Greenwood. Ziyech bumped up to Pulisic when fit. Placeholders come in for those who might miss GW1 due to the 30-day rule. Bruno permacap, but give KDB/TAA when glaringly obvious
