Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) could prove to be one of the most effective budget defenders in Fantasy Premier League this season.

The 21-year-old defender looks certain to fill the gap left in the Wolves team by a long-term injury to Jonny Otto (£5.5m).

The Spaniard is unlikely to feature for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men for an extended period following an operation on his damaged anterior cruciate ligament, injured against Olympiakos earlier this month.

Preliminary estimates indicate that Jonny may not play until 2021, which could unlock Vinagre’s FPL potential as a set-and-forget budget option.

After two years as an understudy on the left-hand side of Wolves’ wing-back system, Vinagre finally has a chance to string together consistent starts in 2020/21. That could see him surpass his 24 and 32-point total scores from the two previous campaigns by a considerable margin.

In fact, Vinagre may even act as a powerful differential in the early weeks of the campaign provided we don’t see massive ownership shifts between now and Gameweek 1. The left wing-back currently sits in 11.7% of Fantasy teams, roughly half the ownership of Matt Doherty (£6.0m).

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), owned by 56%, is currently the only more fashionable defender than the Republic of Ireland international and the heavy backing for Wolves’ right wing-back could see Vinagre slip under the radar for those outside the hardcore Fantasy community.

This article serves to bring the Wolves youngster into the light, examining what he produced in fleeting appearances during 2019/20 using some key underlying statistics.

As this article uses Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

Are Wolves defenders worth owning for 2020/21?

    McCarthy
    TAA - Doherty - Saliba
    Salah - KdB - Ziyech - Greenwood - Klich
    Werner - Antonio

Not sold on Antonio but his form was solid after the restart, Klich on pens for Bielsa too I believe so fancied a gamble on someone new in the 5.5 bracket.

Pretty solid. Not sold on 2 chelsea newbies from GW1, Werner yes and see how Ziyech goes. Klich......i am biased to staying away from promo boys off the bat.

Yeah I can understand that, I just have a feeling with good fixtures Chelsea could be off to a very good start. Lots of options in the 5.5 this year so an easy switch if it turns out horrible.

All I’ve seen are from the same source or unreliable sites not disclosing source which suggests they are just sharing the rumours they’ve heard.

It could be true but I don’t take transfer news seriously unless it’s from a reputable source. After all, majority are fake/just based on rumours.

Seems it's Ghoulam's agent that started all the noise about this last week (as agents are wont to do). Truth be told, Wolves don't need him. They'd literally be signing a left-back for the sake of a few months.

If Vinny is their only cover at LB, it's a risk not having another one. But it sounds like this Ghoulam would expect regular first team action, knocking both jonny and vinny back. Best if he stays away, eh?

I would say so. Plus common sense dictates no club are about to fork out for another sicknote to cover an injured player - it'd be easier just to take someone on loan.

Are we sleeping on Kane, looks nicely priced at 10.5m and ended the season in decent form?

Guaranteed 20+ goals if stays fit (probably 25). if he gets injured, easy transfer out.

1m more than Werner, but will play more minutes (never gets subbed, Chelsea have so many attacking options).

Why not? This Spurs team has shown great progress since the restart and was in the CL finals a year ago. Plus, they're desperate for success and leadership from Mourinho, the quality is there. And they now have a statistically brilliant DM which is vital for a Mourinho team, who by the way is in his second season which has been historically legendary - 2nd with United and 82 points, PL title with Chelsea, record breaking Madrid and La Liga, treble with Inter and yet another title with Chelsea.

He will get his goals don't get me wrong but for 10.5 I want a captaincy option and I don't think he will get several hauls under Mourinho as he will let this Spurs rather defend a 1-0 lead than attack for more goals.

Definitely could be sleeping on Kane. 10.5m is a good price for arguably the most nailed on attacker in the game who has proven 20+ goal potential.

He'll get a ton of pts, but not as many as Salah, Mane, Sterling, KDB, Aubameyang or Bruno.

Bear in mind Spuds are into EL qualifiers from GW1 onwards. Can't tell what kind of squad Mou puts out but there could be tired legs around. Even if Harry is spared, some of his supply-line could be playing Thursdays.

If Arteta sets up Arsenal 343 then Tierney could potentially get Robbo-esque attacking figures (obviously less clean sheets!).
Also if Bellerin gets back to his 2016 form £5.0m would be decent value.

Never get why some managers play attacking wingback types as a centreback in a back 3.
Digne at Everton end of last season as well, just poor management.
I'm a Leeds fan, and on the odd occasion Ayling has been used as centreback it has been disastrous.

Yeah that's the risk with him, great option if he's at LWB I think but tough to say if he'll always be there, Arteta does seem to change defensive shape quite a bit, might depend on them signing Gabriel as he's left footed so could take up that role when they play as a 3.

    4. Balls of Steel

Think Tierney could have a great season if he stays fit and if Arteta sorts out the Arsenal defense he could hit between 150+ points with regular starts.

I like it a lot, but do you think Rashford will outscore Martial. You can have an extra active player if Rash/Davis > Soucek/Martial.

4-3-3 with the midfield options we have this season doesn't seem wise.

Would start Soucek regularly and rotate Taylor/Vinagre.

Nice team but maybe look to a prem def instead of Wood/Mitro as Doherty will out score them imo.

I don't see why everyone is worried about Vinagre not starting because we were always going to get another LWB.
Ghoulam is quality but considering his injury record and the fact he's been out of favour at Napoli, I don't see Nuno rushing to throw him in - for example Podence took a while to get his chance.
Vinagre will almost certainly start the season and get his chance, so if you're happy taking a punt at the start of the season (fixture dependent) then as long as you don't have more than 1 4.0M defender you should be able to cover a non appearance when it happens.
When Ghoulam settles there will be another low cost option waiting to replace Vinagre.

I don't think Ghoulam's signing, I think it's just his agent flashing his muff to any club who'll entertain them. They wanted him at Everton last year.

Lot to like here, plenty of budget invested in the midfield, though. What will you do if mid priced forward eg. Ings, Jimenez, Wood, Antonio hits a hot streak early on?

Yeah will all depend on Werner form at 9.5 he is very easy to downgrade. Was thinking of Martial but personally would not go Greenwood and Martial. Previously had Martial, Foden and Mitrovic instead of Werner, Greenwood and starting Soucek

Real differentials - less than 5% ownership

    Podence 5.5m mid

There was some talk of him end of last season but that's somehow been completely swept away. He's a tidy wide (OoP) forward with lots of potential. Starts might not be guaranteed, but he has the potential to become a really good FPL asset and is currently owned by 0.7% of managers.

    Kean - 6.0m fwd

I'm keeping very close eye on Everton in the lead-up to the season. Kean started the final game and scored a neat goal and by all accounts was playing pretty well. Clearly he has the potential and talent to come good. Now that Ancelotti is manager and he has a chance to prove himself, he could be one of the comeback stories of the year and deliver on his potential and price tag. 0.5% owned.

    Jesus - 9.5m fwd

I'm gonna make a bold prediction that I will own Jesus at some point next season. He's starting to establish himself in the City team, and post lockdown was putting up some huge expected numbers and goal threat. Aguero is on his last season on the current contract, and I can't see him renewing. Guardiola will want to phase him out and Jesus will play more this season, I'm sure of it. His pressing from the front is impressive and he recovers the ball back in the opponents' half twice as much as Aguero. He might not be as good a finisher yet, but that doesn't mean he can't improve. I have a feeling he will get a run of games with nice fixtures and I will get him in. 3.0% owned.

K&J no, but I like Podence. I'm currently on 3 Wolves (Jimi, Vinny, Saiss) and I have a 5.5 mid spot. I'd want to monitor Wolves' opening games to see if he's nailed a place. If he's rotating with Jota and Neto he's no good.

        D. Jota is straight into my team if he looks nailed. Could be gold with his new classification. His xG numbers compared to other midfielders last season are great.

Nice work. For a striker who is far from nailed I think Jesus is overpriced at 9.5. Would have had a look at 8.5.

I think he's well priced. All it takes is another Aguero injury and he's guaranteed starting every game for the best attack in the league. He might still be starting the bulk of the games.

      2. Andy_Social
        • 14 Years

He's not one to start with. He's one to leap on when Kun gets injured again.

I'm not touching Jesus if Kun is fit, think Kun is still first choice but if he's out for a while ( what happens very year unfortunately ) then Jesus is a steal for 9.5.

        • 16 Years

Still wouldn’t have Jesus at £9.5 if (and inevitably, when) Kun is out injured.

Obviously fixtures dependent, thoughts on this team

Saliba - strong feeling he will start under Arteta
Son - Underpriced considering last season and new leadership role
Ziyech and Werner - Both is a stretch but stats don't lie, big descion but may pay off
    Mitrovic and Soucek will rotate

    Ryan
    TAA / Vinagre / Saliba
    KDB / Bruno / Son / Ziyech
    Werner / Antonio / Mitrovic

    Nyland / Dallas / Ferguson / Soucek
