Can we trust Spurs’ FPL defenders with appealing fixtures this season?

Fantasy Premier League managers are considering Spurs defenders ahead of the new season… but can they be trusted? That’s what I am here to find out.

When the 2020/21 fixtures were released there was a sudden spike in managers interested in the Spurs backline. These sorts of options have not been particularly popular in recent seasons, but some of them may well have come into the new campaign at just the right prices.

With a similar group of players to Jose Mourinho’s squad, Spurs kept 13 clean sheets in 2018/19, conceding 38 goals, the fifth-best in the league.

Before that, they finished fourth overall for clean sheets and letting in just 36 goals in 2017/18.

And few managers will forget the 2016/17 campaign when Spurs ended up joint-top for clean sheets with Manchester United (17) as they let in only 26 goals across the season.

If they can rediscover this sort of form with their appealing fixtures at the start of 2020/21, we could find some exciting value options in defence.

But the question is… can they deliver on that kind schedule? To find out, I looked at some of the underlying numbers from last season.

I have to say - three cheers for Tomas Soucek

Lovely to have a 5.0 “attacker” with some reasonable factors in his favour - I personally find he rarely, if ever leaves my drafts, just such a useful little cheapie

Proving to be more popular than any other £5.0m-rated midfielder, is Tomas Soucek (£5.0m).

The Czech international scored on three occasions after lockdown, which no other midfielder now available at this price could better.

He also couldn’t be bested for goal attempts, shots in the box, efforts on target, big chances and headed chances among players in this piece from Gameweeks 30+ to 38+ and he looked a real threat from set plays after his arrival.

          This, this and this again

At 5.0 I’m not expecting more than 2-3 PPG - but I know he’s got a reasonable/good chance of delivering more than that

Takes a lot of budgetary pressure off elsewhere when trying to put the XI pieces together

The Moyesiah bloody loves a goalscoring midfielder too

          Tim Cahill...
          Steven Pienaar...
          Marouane Fellaini...

There was always one knocking around in his sides down through the years

        - He was near the top of attacking stats for midfielders at the end of last season - his xG was quite high iirc.

        - He is a threat from set pieces. Also takes decent amount of shots in the box.

        - He had good goal involvement in his previous club (Prague), something like an average of a goal involvement every 2nd game.

        - He was one of, if not the best in PL after restart in terms of average distance travelled per game. This and eye test indicate that he is a bit more of a box-to-box midfielder than a DM as Wikipedia seems to think.

          This too

The guy has upside to 5.0 - no question there

If he performs towards the top end of his capabilities he could be a 7.0 next season

I think he’ll comfortably be a 6.0 if not more

I thought he would definitely be 6.0 this season. Having him the same price as Wilshire, and 1.5 less than Lanzini for example, seems odd.

Yeah - I think I’d still have been onboard if he’d been 5.5 tbh

6.0 would have been too much for GW1 but if he’d popped up early on with a pen or couple of set piece headers I’d have gotten involved for 6.0

5.0 seems a gift - he can fail at that price & still be value - almost no risk/downside

Agreed. 5.5 is an awkward price point and it's a bit too much for me to be comfortable benching, at start of the season at least. Can't go wrong for 5mil imo.

Don’t think I could do it - Jose scares me - he is genuinely crazy - getting worse with each passing year

Second season syndrome expected to give them a boost for sure but.... he’s just slowly morphed into a full blown maniac over the last few years

It’ll all end in tears. Or they’ll unexpectedly win the league. One of the two 🙂

The best starts I've had have been City based. The sky blue kit looks lovely and right (makes no sense). KDB and/or Sterling too and I think there's some oppurtunity there in the circumstances

Wouldn’t expect a lot of rotation - but if Aurier stays there might be some

I just don’t want the drama if I can avoid it at all - doc could do well though

I'd agree with the below that Laporte may become the 'go to' replacement but with how attacking Aurier was last year, and the fact the defence has shown signs of improvements (hopefully more so pos full Mou preseason) he could be very good.

Agreed mbp love him as an option - rarely pick a 5m mid.

He's absolutely dynamite at timing runs to meet a cross from deep. Can see a good 6-8 goals and a few assists and let's face it that's not to be sniffed at for his price. He's taken pens for his previous club too.

They don't have the Center Backs to play 3 at the back do they? And if they did, they'll be leaving a ton of midfielders on the bench.

Maybe Doh would play as an attacking mid?

    Aurier:

    Min- 2705
Touches in opp half - 1148
    Touches in final 3rd - 687
    Penalty box touches - 54
Shots inside the penalty box - 9
    Total attempts - 13
    Big chances - 0

    Doherty:

    Min - 2840
Touches in opp half - 1175
    Touches in final 3rd - 679
    Penalty box touches - 93
Shots inside the penalty box - 33
    Total attempts - 35
    Big chances - 13

To me these stats tell a story and that story is that Wolves allow Doherty to attack in a way that Mourinho's Spurs won't. Sure, Aurier is used in an attacking manner but he isn't used as a direct goal threat in the way Doherty is. Something that is also confirmed by the eye test, as Doherty was far more regularly attacking closer to goal. It isn't just about whether both teams have attacking fullbacks, it's about *how* they attack.

Not sure if I've taken too many stats from the members area there so, y'know, make sure you all sign up.

Both are attacing fullbacks. Doherty knows how to find his man while Aurier is probably in it to find whoever he can. Aurier is not a disciplined player.

It's not finding his man I'm concerned about, it's finding the goal.

Aurier had more touches than Doc in the final third (despite playing fewer minutes) but Doc still had way more inside the box. That speaks to a fundamental difference in how they were used.

One of the big pluses for Doc as a pick this season was the potential upside in goal threat. With 13 big chances last time out but only 4(?) goals, he actually underperformed. All it would take is a bit of luck for a spike in his goal returns this time around as the underlying stats are there for more returns. If he moves to Spurs that potential disappears, imo.

Could it not also be that Aurier doesn’t have the mind set to make all those shots or provide the same passes that Doherty does

Doherty May just be more clinical in attacking play that Aurier

When one fullback is more involved in the final third but still far less involved in the box than another, that speaks to a system difference imo. A fullback won't be allowed to so aggressively attack inside the box of his own volition as that repeated positioning has to be accommodated within the team structure.

It’s a fair point, essentially playing left wing only holding back when Traore was playing and pushing further forward on the other side has surely been of benefit to Doherty

I still expect he’d do well - as well or better than Aurier, since he would likely continue to do what he had become accustomed to throughout his career

Only at city could Messi even conceive of maintaining the level he held at Barca

The Barca team had a lot to do with his returns

I do not believe it would be a walk in the park for him - a different style of play and more physical league

It’s unlikely to happen and I think we’ll never actually see but he has never looked the same in the Argentina side as he did at Barca so I wouldn’t instantly think he’d be the most phenomenal player that graced the prem in a different team.

You could however argue that city now are better than Barca so would be certainly interesting to see.

He spent 200m on these 6 players at Man Utd

Bailly, Mkhitaryan, Lindelof, Matic, Dalot, Fred

Was given another 165m on Pogba & Lukaku

Was given 400k a week wage budget for Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal

          Got Zlatan on a FT

And still moaned about how he wasn’t backed in the transfer market

Honestly after years upon years of his caper - a very important guardrail is never to get hung up on a single gameweek - either positively/getting players in or negatively/avoiding players

The game isn’t about single gameweeks - it’s about much larger groups of gameweeks

I’ve no issues starting with two or three blankers on the bench (If it comes to that), none at all - I’m nowhere near fully bottomed out on my team yet though

I've been convinced now that they'll both start but personally feel Werner will contribute to a higher % of Chelsea's goals whereas ziyech will potentially split the rest with a bunch of players.

Either way think Chelsea are going to score a lot.

You can't be in the squad if you are unfit. It really isn't rocket science.

After the restart I tried to do a simple thing and I did it and I worked greatly.

I tried to get mids and fwds only by teams that I expected them to score 2+ goals in every game. It's just great to go for better attacking sides and go for unproven players like Armstrong which returned me 13 pts.

Anyway... I will try to start the season with the same tactic. Despite some players contribute in 40-50% of their team's goals I will avoid those who play for low scoring sides.

For example I will avoid Jimenez for sure.
I'm thinking to do the same with Kane but I'm not sure because Spurs sometimes score a lot... It's a bit complicated.

What do you think? Do you go for those who participate in the majority of their team's goals or for those who play for high scoring sides? Finally the pts matter.

I tend to agree. This sounds like sort of the opposite of talisman theory, which I've never liked as it just seems like a way of restating the obvious -- i.e. a team's highest scorer is more likely to continue being their highest scorer than other players.

I look at the fixtures before any other theory. Then I usually pick the topscorer / penalty taker of that the best fixture team. Try to only pick mids and fwds from a top half team, so that possibly overlaps with your high scoring team theory.

FA agenda against Liverpool. Did all they could to throw them out of cup last season and now give the Manchester teams a further week off

Agenda against arsenal, give the Manchester clubs a mandatory 30 days rest but make arsenal play less than 30 days following the fa cup final.

Celtic further damaged Scottish football’s coefficient tonight. Shambles. A good time to put a bet on Gerrard’s Gers for the SPL title.

If Doherty does go to Spurs, surely that makes Kane an even more attractive option?

The man should get some decent service for change since Eriksen left
