Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool

Arsenal won on penalties

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) | Takumi Minamino (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Bukayo Saka (£5.5m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) furthered his case for a Blank Gameweek 1 captaincy as he starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield final win.

The recently converted Fantasy Premier League midfielder scored an excellent first-half goal as his movement and pace caused all sorts of problems for Liverpool in the opening period at Wembley.

Stationed on the left-hand side of the front-three in Mikel Arteta’s 3-4-3 formation, Aubameyang exploited the space behind right-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) in the 12th minute to get his goal. With the defender standing off him too much, he was able to cut inside on his right foot and curl an effort behind Alisson (£6.0m).

“Big games, big moments, big players. (Aubameyang) responded really well to that kind of pressure. We are close (to a new contract for him).” – Mikel Arteta

The £12.0m man faces Fulham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and Saturday’s performance is sure to only further increase the interest in handing him the FPL captain’s armband.

Such a decision could arguably be made easier by what Fantasy managers saw of Liverpool attackers in the Community Shield final.

With Leeds coming to Anfield in Gameweek 1, Jurgen Klopp’s men had also been the subject of armband attention, especially Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) – but he was certainly not at the races at Wembley Stadium.

The Egyptian put in a rather anonymous display, certainly a far cry from the shot-heavy shifts we saw at the back-end of Project Restart.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mané (£12.0m) spurned one of Liverpool’s best chances of the game, a poor touch giving him the wrong angle to beat Emiliano Martínez (£4.5m) from close range.

What makes Arsenal’s performance more encouraging, and Liverpool’s less so, is the disparity between the two clubs when it came to preparation.

It was the Gunners who came into the Community Shield final with less pre-season game-time under their belt, with some players managing just one training session before the game. Despite that fact, they shot out of the traps and, for the majority of the first hour, were the most alert in both boxes.

By contrast, Liverpool have already played two pre-season matches but took until the introduction of Takumi Minamino (£6.5m) to offer any real insight going forward.

“David (Luiz) had only trained one day just before the final. He was able to play 90 minutes. Thank you to the players.” – Mikel Arteta

A key factor in Liverpool’s struggles at Wembley was the increasingly organised shape and discipline on offer at Arteta’s Arsenal.

Although Minamino did find a way through in the second half, for the most part, the Gunners’ back-three did an excellent job of containing Liverpool and dealing with Andrew Robertson‘s (£7.0m) relentless crossing.

Staffed by Kieran Tierney (£5.5m), David Luiz (£5.5m) and Rob Holding (£4.5m), the Arsenal backline did an excellent job of crowding out Salah and Mané, beating them to virtually every ball. That certainly bodes well for their defensive prospects in 2020/21, especially with Fulham and West Ham up first.

“A lot of teams play in this formation and in the final third you want to be fresh. You want to force it sometimes. We didn’t have our rhythm so we couldn’t create the chances we wanted.” – Jurgen Klopp

“(I was pleased with) the courage of the team. How aggressive we were without the ball, how well we made the decisions to break the pressure of Liverpool and cause them some issues in the backline.” – Mikel Arteta

However, there is still some uncertainty on how exactly to cover Arsenal’s defence this season with none of the £4.5m options particularly nailed-on just yet.

Holding was a key man against Liverpool but William Saliba (£4.5m), a player from whom much is expected, was on the bench at Wembley.

As for the goalkeeper situation, Arteta stopped short of declaring Martínez the first-choice during his pre-match media commitments.

The Spaniard missed Arsenal’s first pre-season friendly due to quarantine from recent travelling, which is why Bernd Leno (£5.0m) and Matt Macey shared minutes at Stadium MK.

However, Arteta seemed to suggest that the main reason Martínez came straight back into the side was that he helped Arsenal qualify for the Community Shield in the first place, having played in the FA Cup final earlier in the summer. Fantasy managers will have to hope one more pre-season friendly can be squeezed in between now and Blank Gameweek 1 to give us more information on the subject.

“I have two fantastic keepers. I think Emi (Martínez) finished the season really strong. He was our goalkeeper in the FA Cup and he deserves to play this final.” – Mikel Arteta

The stock of Liverpool defenders appears to be travelling in the opposite direction. As already mentioned, in the first half especially, Arsenal looked much more dangerous when pressing forward, exploiting space behind the Reds’ backline.

It was not far from a first-choice defence either, only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) missing from the usual suspects, but Liverpool still gave up plenty of chances early on.

Williams offered Aubameyang too much room in the first half, Joe Gomez (£5.5m) gave the ball away a little too often and even Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) struggled to keep up with some of the mistakes going on around him.

While this Liverpool defence has not become porous overnight, there are still enough troubling signs that Fantasy managers may think twice about investing in a double-up, especially with Alexander-Arnold left out of the Community Shield as a fitness precaution (although he is due to report for England duty on Monday).

Those on the lookout for cheaper attacking options in the Arsenal ranks will have seen more to like about Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) than Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m). The versatile midfielder was a key man for getting Arsenal moving in their counter-attacks during the first half, playing an excellent cross-field assist for Aubameyang’s goal and twice setting up Nketiah.

The former Leeds loanee has been exploiting the absence of Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) this week starting both of Arsenal’s pre-season games so far. With the Frenchman heavily rumoured with an exit, there is a chance that Nketiah could lock in the centre-forward’s role but his performance on Saturday was not quite at the level that will entice Fantasy managers.

Nketiah’s approach play was nice and he was certainly willing to receive the ball but the chances that came his way were not executed well enough.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Martínez; Tierney (Kolasinac 83′), Holding, D Luiz; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka, Elneny, Bellerín (Cédric 58′); Aubameyang, Nketiah (Nelson 82′), Saka (Willock 82′).

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez, N Williams (Minamino 59′); Wijnaldum (Brewster 90+2′), Milner (Keïta 59′), Fabinho; Mané, Firmino (C Jones 83′), Salah.

With everyone umming and ahhing over Mitro why no love for Ayew?

    Same price.
Proven in the EPL (at least recently anyway).
Ranked 4th in terms of value among forwards last season.
    Palace can only (surely) improve.
Fixtures are a mixed bag, but not much different to Fulham's.
Nailed, still the odd ? about Mitro.

Comparing Mitro and Ayew, maybe because every newly promoted teams has that element of surprise in the first 5-10 GWs.

Take Norwich last year, Pukki harvested lots of points early on until he's found out, so maybe Mitro will be the same

But I personally not a fan of 6.0 strikers and prefer wingback so possibly will rotate between 4-4-2 and 3-5-2

Ayew just isn’t convincing leading the line for palace. With Benteke lurking, plus Schlupp and Zaha sometimes played up top, he’s a risk compared to mitro who has zero chance of getting benched.

Thanks for your replies, all valid points.

I think I'm going to try to stretch to Chris Wood as my lone striker (obvs not GW1 and I know 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 are not popular on here), I think he's more of a prospect and probably more nailed than Ayew. Then i can always switch down to one of the other two if either show a bit of form.

In defence, I can see benefits of each of these but which would you choose and why?

    1. Double Liv defence (TAA + Robbo) and laugh as the points roll in.
    2. Play it cool. TAA and a bunch of 4.5m (maybe a 5.0m) + a 4.0m for good measure.
    3. All 4.5m's (possibly even one 4.0m) and use the cash for the all important mids/strikers.

I’m currently on number 2 but debating selling Salah and doubling up on Liverpool defence instead which means I could spend a bit more on my midfield.

Currently leaning toward double LIV def cause they're basically midfielders and Leeds ain't no whipping boys so Salah probably can only score 1

Auba (C) sounds better and I get to keep Doherty and possibly Ziyech if he's fit or bench Greenwood

1, but you have to be patient.
With full backs, despite them playing good, there's not a lot of difference in scoring 2 or 12/15.

Take Robertson yesterday for example.. he could easily have had 2 assists and a CS for 15 points.. but ended up with 2

I don't think 1 is as simple as "laugh as the points roll in". It will require a lot of patience. There will be weeks where they concede, even more weeks where they don't get any attacking returns and you'll be staring at them like two big cash cows thinking, "Maybe I should sell for a cheap defender and invest in attack." I personally lack that patience.

      I'd advise 2 or 3.

Last year he has sporadic minutes but maybe this year he'll start more

Which one do you prefer :
        Saka + benched Greenwood or

But is he worth if he's laying as a lwb?
You could get many wingbacks for 5.5 who are classed as defenders and would get CS points as well. Bellerin looks a better option.

Just thinking that 3 slots of DF will go to TAA/Robbo/Doc/VVD/Laporte so the other 2 should be 4.5 and 4.0

While regarding Saka, he can play LW and LWB and easy to jump to ASM/Soucek/Armstrong/etc

    Another day another iteration
    McCarthy | Nyland
TAA, Davies, Vinagre | Douglas, Strujik
Salah, Auba, Son, Soucek | Stephens
    Werner, Ings, Mitro

currently two leeds defender as fodder

Do either of the leeds defenders even have a remote chance of getting a start?

At least get Johnson in at West Ham or downgrade Dier to get another 4.5

Leno looks more and more appealing at 5.0 after a WC. Been really impressed by Arteta's ability to manage the defense, if they sign Partey and Gabriel they should further improve. He also tends to make plenty of saves which gains him BPS. Not in my team GW1 but definitely a player to monitor closely.

No, Martinez won't start. Ornstein (reliable Arsenal journalist) has said he will be sold to raise funds for signings.

If he is a good option then hopefully that means Tierney will be too. For 0.5 more think I’d be inclined to go with him.

How many CS do you expect Arsenal to keep this season?

Considering Tierney as a set & forget, hoping for atleast 12cs and 5-6 assists.

      No rush imo

Arsenal defence are pretty much bottom of ticker if you WC around 8/9

      Morning.
I'm going to wait till GW 8 to look at them to get the bumpy fixtures out of the way .... Might have 1m more in bank till then i guess too to invest

I would just get Tierney after the tricky away fixtures have cleared

You have 2 WC's. No need to set and forget for the season.
Assuming you play your first WC latest possible around GW16, you should just be concerned with how many CS will they get till GW16.
I don't think he's a good option then because of their tough xture run from GW3 to GW11
GW 12-15 they face soton, Everton and Chelsea so no guaranteed CS there as well.

I would avoid Arsenal defence as of now.

Nyland instead of Steer. Love the forward line but mid feels a bit light.

2 weeks until season starts and only 2 million players. Wonder if we’ll actually see lower numbers this time out.

Majority of them join during the season. It was something like 3-4m last year.

Could be, but there is always a steep rise just before the season when all the works/mates leagues are set-up and people make their last minute choices. The potential of empty grounds will also not be helping to spead pre-season fever.

It’ll probably almost double in the 48 hours before kickoff

If it’s at 3.5 million by Thursday 10th I’d say they’ll hit 7m for GW1 then another million or so late joiners over the first few GWs

Anywhere between 5.5 8.5 in mids looks like a completely dead zone, which makes building a balanced squad difficult imo.

Foden, Greenwood - Not necessarily nailed before the transfer window ends.

Jota, Traore, Mount - Not nailed

Ziyech, Pereira - Newbies from relatively weaker leagues

Maddison, Barnes - Seems overpriced in a team without their 1st choice fullbacks to start with

I think it's pretty easy to get a balance team as long as you are not trying to get too many premium assets.

I think Foden will be a great option in that price bracket and likely to get as many minutes as anyone for city this season. City pike to get thier transfer business done early and I dont see the Messi move happening personally. Even if he does sign I like Foden a lot as the primary Silva replacement in the midfield 3

    4. Amey

Now check Strikers in that bracket. It's 8.5 or Soucek
