How I’ll try to keep pace with the new smart thinkers in FPL this season

When I returned to Fantasy Football in 2006, a statistics fetish and the quest for one-upmanship over my rival Granville inspired this website and underpinned some high ranks in Fantasy Premier League. I got myself a flying start, an early advantage.

Almost fifteen years later, the pitch has been levelled.

I have to admit, when Fantasy Football Scout became my universe, I buried my head and shut out the social media powered community that grew up around me. I built walls and obsessed about protecting what I had, forgoing likes and subscribers to keep my roof intact.

Now free of those concerns, I was shocked when I reared my head to look around. Both the depth and breadth of the FPL community is extraordinary, the amount of information and data being shared openly overwhelming.

Eight million managers make a high rank that more difficult to achieve, but the explosion of new voices spraying knowledge and opinion far and wide raises the bar with each passing season.

Metrics

Back in the day, I was among a few hundred who wandered trance-like down supermarket isles deliberating a four-point hit. Now there are thousands extending loo breaks to unfeasible lengths of time while they compare Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) for touches in the box. Like myself all those years ago, they have spreadsheets, irritated partners and an insatiable drive to succeed: a triple threat.

I need to raise and change my game if I’m to remain in their company.

Too long in the tooth and arrogant to be told the latest do’s and don’ts or ten tips for success, I know the mechanics of the game and how to bend them to my advantage. To really improve, I need to look hard at myself, analyse my methods and learn from mistakes.

I’ve always hurried away from FPL failure. I’m almost ashamed that dismal Gameweeks spark family tension in garden centres, so why would I ever dwell on every error? I bury mistakes to maintain an equilibrium. Forget that bad transfer, move on, greet the next deadline as a liquor to quickly drown my sorrows.

That changes now. I should see my mistakes as an opportunity to learn more about how I play, to identify my favourite error traps and the bias at play when I run my eye over Match of the Day highlights or Goals Imminent tables.

Thanks to an almost catastrophic campaign in 2019/20, I have plenty to pick apart. I’ve learned to enjoy looking back and attempting to fathom my thought process behind each bad decision. But that’s just a post mortem; I need to attack this new season with this same analytical mindset.

I have to be more inquisitive as each Gameweek rolls by, question and challenge each decision I make and develop methods that reveal a clear choice that I’m happy to take, not just one I’ve convinced myself is correct by brute-forcing fuzzy numbers and rose-tinted eye tests.

You might have noticed that psychology is a popular buzzword right now, an emerging theme in the community that can be conveniently tucked away in a bulging box file labelled “overthinking”.

But I’m convinced that something is afoot. When Magnus Carlsen, the world’s finest Chess player, hits the FPL top 100, we need to stop in our tracks and consider that there could be a new breed among us.

I reckon your average Grandmaster spends more time pondering King to G7, rather than King to centre forward. So I might have the edge on Magnus when it comes to thinking time, I may even have more knowledge and data at my disposal.

But does Magnus employ a logical method to his decisions and keep bias and emotion in check? Does he indulge in bouts of introspection and analysis of his judgement calls? Does he read all those psychology threads on Twitter with a knowing smile?

He’s the best chess player in the world. He does all the above and has a team of advisors doing it for him while he sleeps.

These days everyone can get a glut of knowledge, information and data in their timeline with relative ease. But to work out how best to process it, how you learn to separate luck from skill and focus on improving the input, not dwell on the output, that might just be the new marginal gain. A fresh route to success.

After last season, I’ll give anything a go.

Magnus must be petrified.

Best players by position:

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    I'm doing some FanTeam work.

There are some really good deals in there for mid-priced teams. They defo seem underpriced.

Currently have two teams and here's one:

    Lloris Meslier
    TAA VvD Boly Vinagre Saliba
    Salah Son Fernandes Ziyech Soucek
    Ings Leko Zivkovic

Leko has gone to Birmingham City, I think.

He's a 4.0m fodder. If not him I'll find another dud.

It's interesting, they've got a few overpriced players balanced by the presence of 4.0s.

      Lloris (Meslier)
TAA - Davies - Boly - Vinagre (White)
Ziyech - Salah - Sterling - Son (Bissouma)
      Werner - Adams (Leko)

Made this as an interesting first draft, don't like Son at 10 and need a placeholder for Sterling first. It's certainly intriguing overall.

Just bench Sterling. I think Sterling is the best value player in the game with FanTeam's scoring.

That team you have is pretty good.

Oh and my plan is to have 1.0m ITB to get Sterling in for Son after one week. I can't justify benching two Manc players and Son is overpriced at 10.0m so will have no problem having a forced transfer GW2 of Son > Sterling especially since the rest of my team are very nailed on starters.

Thanks, I went on FanTeam yesterday and just straight up built a team on instinct, hence the presence of Sterling. At 11M he's a clear lock for me. Totally agree with everything you said about Son and him.

It's nice to see the difference between my FPL and FanTeam draft, one has a 4-3-3 with 3 Prem Strikers/1 Prem Midfielder and the other is the opposite, a 4-4-2 with 3 Prem Midfielder/1 Prem Striker. Really shows the difference in approaches in fantasy and I wouldn't be surprised if they had similar points after a while! I thought about tinkering more but the Messi dilemma and the idea of dealing with the Manchester blank yet again puts me off for now. I also need to look more into the scoring but I've focused on the bigger clubs due to the +1 for a win and -1 for a loss which can stack up very, very quickly.

              This is correct imo.

+1 point for winning makes big 6 clubs much better assets to own. And defense is also stronger because of that because their big 6 assets are cheaper to get hold of.

Forwards are also really bad in this game because you don't get bonus points which is often what makes them sort of compete with mids in FPL. The fact you can get 4.0 forwards as well means that one up front is pretty good. Pick a strong 90 minute man like Ing, Jimi or Kane and you should be set.

My FanTeam draft looks absolutely nothing like my FPL team which to me is a good sign that I'm adapting based on the ruleset and player prices.

I realised that more forwards feel overpriced. And GKs and Defenders are a bit underpriced. So I'm going for max 1 or 2 forward. I did consider double Liverpool defence due to VVD being only 6m, but don't like the fixtures.

Almost every forward costs more (or equal) in Fanteam than fpl. (is my layman definition of overpriced)
          Martial 10.5 Aguero 11.5 Vardy 10.5 etc

White is signing for Brighton and I don't like their defense. So much value at 4.5m as well, so will aim to find 0.5m.

White is the main bench guy for now, second best at 4.0 imo. I picked him on the chance that Brighton play 3ATB, while 3 ATB doesn't equal more CS it does make their defense more appealing to me.

Just had a look at the 4.5 defenders... Basham, Luiz, Garcia, Bellerin (!) all potential candidates for sure.

Nah it's Zouma, Rudiger, Luiz, Bellerin, Holgate, Dallas that appeal. They are very nice options we wouldn't be able to get in FPL (except Dallas)

Only Vinagre starts unfortunately... Mari maybe when he gets back from injury but the rest are no more nailed than someone like Ben Johnson at WHU.

I think defense is way stronger in FanTeam as well. So TAA + VvD are in all of my drafts. Bonus point for your team winning is insane.

Forwards are really overpriced in FanTeam. The key is finding one that will play a guaranteed 90 because they get a bonus point for that. For that reason, Kane, Ings and Jimi appeal to me. Werner less so.

      On point.
Defenders from big 6 are a better option. TAA+VVD locked for me.

KDB and Sterling being equal in FPL is fair, having a 1.5m difference in Fanteam certainly means that Sterling is the city asset you want to own.

Going with 1 forward too. Probably Jiminez.

If you already had premium captaincy options for each week, which would you rather have (from GW2 onwards):

    A) Ziyech and Martial

    B) Salah (or Auba) and a 4.5m forward*

*Who would remain on the bench to be replaced by a 4.5m defender of your choice, e.g. Vinagre or KWP.

I feel having 2/3 premium mids is not optimal. Only have the one which you will regularly captain.
In gameweeks with difficult fixtures, you can always captain the sub premium options like Martial-Son-Werner

I’m on the latter because I want Ramsdale for Sheff U good early fixtures and have KWP as a floating 4.5. Everyone seems to be writing off Sheff U defence already without any real evidence. What has changed bar the keeper, who looks in the same shot stopper mould as Henderson?

Every Liverpool clean sheet will kill you.

I hate it, but you need one unless you bank on Liverpool to get much fewer clean sheets than expected.

Back five combined have an ownership of over 105%.

Obviously, every non Liverpool clean sheet will be wonderful for you.

What if his defence also gets a CS?
What if he scores more overall points because of the extra cash?
There's more to it than just seeing the 100+ ownership and say that a Liverpool CS will kill him

You both make good points. I just feel like Liverpool recently defensively haven't been sound. They don't have a great start to the season but those could be famous last words.

I didn’t the explanation quite hard to put into words, I’m sure someone else can do it better...

          Ifs and buts obviously.
But such high ownership means one of two things.

A Liverpool clean sheet murders you given ownership.

A Liverpool CS wipeout does some wonders... if the non Liverpool players (also not owned by most others) also outperform the Liverpool ones and those or the money saved does well.

Fundamentally, the five non Liverpool players at the back there, in what looks like a 352/442, will be in/are also in a lot of other sides too.

It needs all three clean sheets to outperform other FPL players.

We've been here before and yet I'm tempted again.

Ayoze Perez. 6.5m with wba BUR in the first two games. With Maddison potentially out injured, could he make another reappearance in my GW1 team?

Would be a nice placeholder to see which mid-price mid emerges. Foden is also a nice sideways move in GW3 if he proves to be starting.

Less explosive than Perez but Tielemans could be a good option if he replicates his attacking returns from his first half season. People forget he's only 23. The problem is all the Leicester attacking assets feel about 0.5M overpriced.

Very decent for a strong up top side.

Wonder whether the natural week 2 move wouldn’t be Werner to Martial.

Personal preference is to start slightly heavier in defence and use either Jim or Ings up top as a lung haul pick. But more oomph this way

Arteta would be crazy to play Tierney CB. How's this looking?

1.5 ITB for Son to Fernandes GW2 then Auba to KDB 3.

    McCarthy
    TAA Doherty Tierney Vinagre
    Salah Auba Son Soucek

Not sure on whether to have auba in gw1 team.
I think there is better value elsewhere long term (rashford, son)
But I wouldn't be keeping him long term, just gw1, possibly 2.
However, having him in my team from gw1 messed up the balance of the rest of the team.
So, do I just accept I'll potentially miss out on his hauls, in favour of long term team structure?

Doesn't have to come down to that combo, can fit Auba, Son and werner into a team fairly easily. Personally I'm happy to have a lot of big hitters to start with, placeholders for city or united lads or just cash cows to upgrade elsewhere

By GW3, you'll have two free transfers. If you're getting Bruno (between 10.4 and 10.7), you'll then be able to upgrade another placeholder. This is around 1.5M, which can be an upgrade to any other placeholder in your XI

So, Auba alone isn't your placeholder. It's Auba + cheap placeholder to Bruno/Rashford/Greenwood + City, and then your team gets balanced

Out of interest GB, how much weight does your model give to pens/what is your assumption for number of pens in a season? Does it change by team?

        1. Piggs Boson
          • 12 Years

It applies a 0.5 regression back to the mean. That might take some tweaking over the years.

I manually enter who takes penalties, even if they are equally shared, and it weights the points accordingly.

Btw, By 0.5 I mean 50%. Sounds like I was just proposing a fixed value to be taken off. It's percentage based. 50% back towards the mean... dunno if that's too steep, I pulled that value out of my backside...

Come to think about it, penalties are fixture-proof, right?

So I shouldn't be weighting them against fixtures, but just adding them on at the end...

Hmm, yeah. More touches in the box = more pens. Need to do more tests.

As with most things, there's probably a balance between the two and it needs weighting...

Yes it’s my deciding factor between him or Pereira.

Either way I prefer both to the 5.5 options, and with 1.5ITB they’re the perfect placeholder for Greenwood.

Pereira's too much of an unknown for me.

Many experts use the word 'flexibility'. Can you tell me the meaning of this word in the context of Fantasy? I know more or less what's going on, but I'd like to know your definition.

    1. Nanoelektronicar
      • 9 Years

I am by no means an expert, but imo team is flexible if you need minimal transfers and hits to bring players in. If you allocate too much in attack, it will be tough to release those funds to upgrade the defenders.

    2. amitmishr

Flexibility to change and hop on to a player on fire. Suppose you have all strickers around 6 and a 8-9 striker starts firing, you may have to do wholesale changes just to get him in

    3. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

I use it in the sense of being easy to transfer out a player for another with one transfer. That might include keeping some cash in the bank to cope with price rises. More specifically regarding the start of this season, it means having a starting squad that allows you to have a range of options to bring in Mancs depending on circumstances. If you lack flexibility and events don't go as you planned, you're pressurised into using an early WC or taking hits.

Agreed on the 4.5 lads, Justin and Vinagre are just in there for now really, will monitor pre season and see whos likely to get a game at that price. I'm planning an early-ish wildcard to shift some funds back to defence but want flexibility with the big hitters at first.

Have tried drafts where I end up with Mitrovic and Adams up top with a slightly better defence and I'm not that keen. Having a lot of expensive players makes shifting funds around quite easy as well 🙂

To start the season if I need to shave 0.5 off someone I may go for robbo for a few weeks, Trent has been injured and hasn't had a preseason so might not be fully up to speed. Also robbo finished last season very well and was bombing up the wing.

Most will tell you to go without trent is sacrilege and I completely agree that in the long run he will score more but over short term it could easily be robbo who starts quicker!

Yes he will but trent will be rotated just as much for Neco williams especially if he's not fully fit to start the season. He has not been out in Austria for pre season and is not a certainty to play the game today.

Not saying I will definitely go for Robbo but as a short term choice I don't think it is awful. Could be a huge swing if trent is a bit slow starting and robbo is bombing on and getting asists.

Yes it is not a risk free strategy but I don't think its awful. After the first few games I would like to have robbo and trent. more clean sheets on the way this season and then you don't even have to touch the defence with those 2 there

Definitely could work... I don't see many wanting double Pool defence this season but I do see the fixtures, and the CSs do look likely

We underperformed with only 13 clean sheets last season with Alllison out and then the defence downing tools after title was secured. I think 20 clean sheets is a reasonable estimate and doubt any 7m player will beat robbo over the seaosn.

Based on Project Restart only? Nope. Robbo was playing like Sane, ffs

But I'm nowhere near bold enough to suggest this will continue long-term. I'm going with both. Could be smart, or could be FOMO

Both is where I want to end up but not at the start with Arsenal and Chelsea in the first 3 games. Plan is to move to the double up once tough fixtures out the way

Although it's nice to see Leeds sign Rodrigo who is arguably a better player than Bamford and at least gives us another option up top for them, I can't help but feel underwhelmed by this transfer. The stats alone don't convince me. I follow Valencia and he didn't set the world alight there. Time will tell...

Brought to fit the system. Reminds me of the Jimenez loan by Wolves

Yep. No chance I start with him over Mitro

How nailed is Davies? Think Sessegnon will take minutes off him at LB?

Fotball Made Simple is such a great YouTube channel. This video makes me think that if Spurs play the same formation they played last season under Mourinho, Alli maybe better choice than Son playing wide. Thoughts? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXab7e1pcRw

So Doherty is a 6.0 version of Son... with added benefits of CS points

If Son is shifted out wide then I'll not bother going for him, got his points when playing as a front 2 with kane, I was hoping the would play that again this year. haven't had the chance to see in Pre season as Kane not yet available.

Only planning on keeping son short term though and will then switch to bruno probably.

How big is the impact on the Wolves defence if Doherty departs? Vinagre still an option?

Doherty isn't the key to Wolves clean sheets. They do so well as they are well organised and sit deep. Doherty was a good attacking outlet for them but I think they can get another RWB who would replicate his defensive contributions.

Brighton have bought Dutch international Veltman, so Lamptey's game time may well be reduced.

Would they not use Veltman at CB?

Maybe but he’d need to get ahead of Webster, Dunk, White or Duffy. I think it’s just Lamptey as competition at RB?

    What do we think?

    McCarthy
    TAA-Tierney-Vinagre-KWP
    Salah-Auba-Zieych-Pereira
    Werner-Jimenez

    Steer, Justin, Brewster, Stephens

Dont have plan yet how to fit mk manu players in next week...

Thoughts on Sam Johnstone? good record with wba last season, not the worst match-ups and pretty cheap too. something different to the same ryan or mccarthy.

Has a good penalty record and promoted keepers often end up racking the save points, could be the new Neil Etheridge!

Who are the best 4.5 m defenders? Lots have Saliba, Justin Vinagre where playing time a bit unknown
( Justin until October whenPereira due back) but are we better to be looking at likes of Ayling, Lamptey, Burn, KWP, Taylor, Targett to name just a few.

Yeah its a tough one. I'm not a fan of Brightons fixtures and they were awful defensively in project restart so not keen on them for now. Leeds lads could be good but again they have a tough opening run. If Saliba, Justin or Vinagre can nail down a place then they will be a cheap route in to 3 decent defences.

KWP a good bet, Burnley lads will be solid again but blank and not the best fixture run for them either.

I'm thinking about playing one striker (Jiminez). He feels as nailed as they come. Do you think that the risk of only fielding 10 sometimes is worth taking for the extra points that Laporte will get (I'm counting on conservatively 160 - 170 with a full season) over any striker at his price (6.0)? I'd have Vinagre as my 4.5 (probably, or Justin), then four (4!) defenders of 6.0 and above.

Brewster might help you with that.

You don't think 4.5s rotating can get more points than a 6.0?
