How does Kai Havertz compare with Chelsea’s other FPL attacking assets?

Chelsea have continued their spending spree this summer with the acquisition of one of the most coveted young talents in Europe, Kai Havertz.

The attacking midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Blues, following in the footsteps of Timo Werner (£9.5m) in moving to west London from the Bundesliga.

Arguably the club’s biggest statement since the signing of Eden Hazard from Lille, the German has been priced up at £8.5m – in a similar bracket to Christian Pulisic (£8.5m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) – by Fantasy Premier League and has the potential to be a real bargain.

Anyone who dabbled in Fantasy Bundesliga this summer would have been excited by what they saw – including some ‘out of position’ run-outs up front – so we’ll assess his FPL credentials in the article below.

Born in Aachen, Germany in June 1999, Havertz started out in amateur football at just four years of age for Alemannia Mariadorf where his grandfather, Richard, was club chairman. His father was a policeman and mother a lawyer so discipline was something that was impressed upon him at a young age.

It was his grandfather who encouraged him in his younger days, spending time with the youngster knocking down gnomes in the garden with his left foot. Richard’s passing when Havertz was just 10 led the German to join his first professional club, Alemannia Aachen.

He only spent a year with his hometown club, with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in an 8-3 loss impressing them enough to make them sign the youngster. He was highly sought after by clubs across the country, including Borussia Monchengladbach and Koln, but Leverkusen pulled out all the stops to sign the exciting prospect.

He notched seven goals and two assists over 23 appearances in his first season in the U17-Bundesliga West but the next season was where he really shone.

After scoring 18 goals, he was awarded the silver Fritz Walter Medal in the 2015/16 season after being named the second-best German under-17s player; two years later he won the gold in the under-19s category.

In October 2016, at 17 years and 126 days of age, he became the youngest debutant in Bayer Leverkusen’s history and later became their youngest scorer with a strike against Wolfsburg in April.

He went on to become the youngest ever player in the Bundesliga to register 50 appearances. Coincidentally, the previous holder of that record was his new Chelsea teammate, Timo Werner. Havertz was also the youngest ever captain of Leverkusen.

After seven goals and 13 assists in his first two seasons, 2018/19 saw him become a household name in Germany with 17 goals from midfield, becoming the first teenager to hit that total in a Bundesliga season.

Nine of Havertz’s 17 goals gave Leverkusen a 1-0 lead and no player in the Bundesliga opened the scoring more frequently that season. Manager Peter Bosz’s attacking philosophy gave him a platform to flourish and he featured in every single game that campaign.

He took three penalties that season, posting an xG of 13.1 and a non-penalty xG of 10.9; this would indicate that he is a good finisher.

“I guess reading the game has always been one of my strengths. A certain composure on the ball and the ability to make the right choices quickly.” – Kai Havertz

Havertz started off the 2019/20 season by becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 25 goals with a strike against Paderborn on the opening day. He went on to register 12 goals and six assists that campaign with an xG of 9.1. Only one of these was a penalty, which meant his non-penalty xG was 8.3. Again, he outperformed his xG significantly and even upped his xA to 6.2.

Over his last three seasons, his non-penalty xG+xA per 90 numbers have been on the rise every year and he averages an expected goal involvement every other game over that period.

“If you can always be one or two steps ahead of your opponent, you can already win the game, and I think that’s just the player he is.” – Leon Bailey, Havertz’s teammate.

Comparison v other Chelsea assets

Ziyech18.252.220.834.80.070.21
Havertz42.4584143.10.190.44

Unlike Ziyech, Havertz is not a volume shooter who takes a lot of speculative shots from outside the box: his minutes/shot is the lowest in the comparison.

However, a large percentage of the youngster’s efforts are on target (43%), compared to the Moroccan (34.8%). In fact, his goals per shot (0.19) is almost triple that of Ziyech’s (0.07).

What’s even more impressive is that Havertz scores with nearly half of his shots on target (44%) whereas Ziyech is closer to 20%. He even bests Werner, who has goals/shot of 0.18 and goals/shot on target of 0.38.

In terms of creativity, only Ziyech (20.8) created chances more frequently than Havertz (41) last season.

The Prospects

Havertz spent most of the 2019/20 season deployed as a no. 10, also featuring on the right flank and at centre-forward at times. Given that Ziyech’s preferred position is on the right wing and Pulisic has been effective on the left, Lampard is expected to use the German behind his compatriot Werner.

Werner is a very different striker compared to Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.5m). As we saw briefly in the Brighton friendly, he works a lot more off the ball, similar to Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.0m), who was playing as a no. 10, found himself in the box very often as a result of the German’s link-up play and the 4-3-3 that Lampard prefers shaped up into a 4-2-2-2 in transition. Given Havertz’ goal-scoring instincts, the prospects are mouth-watering, to say the least.

Chelsea were second only to Manchester City for expected goals last season, so creating chances was not a problem and by adding an ice-cold finisher like Havertz to their ranks, the Blues’ goal output should go up significantly this season.

With Havertz having had zero minutes with Chelsea in pre-season due to international involvement with Germany, it is perhaps unlikely that Lampard throws him into the fray straight away against Brighton, with a cameo appearance most likely. His minutes should improve as the weeks go on and he settles in, however.

In terms of injury, he has a good overall fitness record with only the muscle tear he suffered in November 2019 causing him to miss more than 15 days out with injury. He has been unavailable for just six games over the past three seasons due to injury or illness.

Should I start with the template team or my own thought?
I prefer Roberson & Mane to TAA & Salah at the start.
Robertson finished last season strong, looks very sharp in pre season, same as Mane, meanwhile TAA even doesnt have pre season, Salah looks fat and useless in recent games

TAA & Salah are better than Robertson & Mane at the end season I agree, but I probably WC at Gw 8-9 or even sooner, so I think short term Robertson + Mane seem better picks, then get TAA & Salah on WC later

P/S: Plan to sell Salah/Mane for Bruno GW2 too

      1. Not sure yet - rumours.

      2. Last season Pl had a winter break. Due to the rescheduling due to the virus they appear to have done a half-baked version this time; half the teams play in GW18 and the other half in GW19. That much is confirmed, but the missing GW1 matches could be put there too, and maybe other unforeseen postponements.

Not the best BB team but I guess team is sorted for now without much compromise in terms of quality and future transfers. Just have to decide 2nd GK and Soucek's fitness.

    Ramsdale
    Trent, Doherty, Egan, Lindelof
    Aubameyang, Son, Zaha
    Martial, Jimenez, Dominic

Bench: McCarthy, Ayling, Soucek, Saint Maximin

I've been looking quite a bit at mid price mids and forwards for xGI across last season. Specifically looking at differences between how players perform against top 6 teams and the rest. What I found are some players are more consistent and can probably be carried through even if they come up against some tough fixtures (DCL, Antonio, Bowen, Jota) while others have dramatic differences (Wood, Adams, Ihenacho) and others even step it up when versing top 6 teams (Trossard, Sarr, DCL again).

Definitely worth considering these factors when selecting your mid price options, especially if you're considering laterizer's upside chasing method to use transfers aimed at swapping out premiums and looking for big captaincy gains.

I myself have got high hopes for Pereira at West Brom and can't wait to see where he fits in amongst the other mid price options.

well I think if you plan on using your transfers to swap out your premiums it may be more prudent to have the more consistent performing mid priced players rather than be swapping players like Wood in and out of your team due to fixture swings.

Well yes. I'd be interested if you did a closer analysis because for me, mid-price and inconsistency generally go hand-in-hand. If you can dig out the odd mid-price mr. reliable that would be gold. Particularly if DCL is one of them - people mostly say he's reliably hopeless!

DCL was consistent allright - 10 blanks in his first 13 games to start the season, and 10 consecutive blanks to end the season

Wood also scored against spurs (top 6), double returned vs Man Utd (top six) and scored in both games against Leicester (top 6)

Sarrs season consisted of two games (Liverpool & Man Utd) he had 2G 4A in his other 26 appearances...

After the baby arrival, he missed GW20 officially due to a “rest” then missed GW21 officially due to a “muscle injury”

Game back in GW22 & assisted vs Southampton

Missed the pen vs Burnley GW23 (9 point swing with baps)

Taken off injured again GW24 in first half vs West Ham

Struggled with the injury & fixtures next 3 games in GW25,26,27 (Man City, Wolves, Chelsea back to back)

Left out of squad again with injury GW28 to Norwich

Benched GW29 returning from injury - but came of bench to score a brace vs Villa

              Then lockdown hit

But from GW29-36 he scored 6 & setup 1 in those 8 GW’s - I.e. right back where he left off before injury & the baby

I don’t think you can blame DCL in isolation. Everton as a whole were really bad after lockdown.
Dom is a confidence player like many other players. He lost his , when when the team decided to down tools with nothing to play for.

I don’t disagree with that - and he was useful for that little purple patch

But he was held up as a bastion of consistency (of XGI) by the OP - which is of very little use to us when he’s going on these massive runs of blanks

Which kind of suggests that expected data may not actually be all that useful?

On the eye test DCL was beyond horrific post restart - I couldn’t get over how bad he looked

I just find for players like Wood it is useful. Because I hardly catch myself watching Burnley games so it's nice to see how many chances he is getting per game and the quality of them, and how much that changes when Burnley play a game against teams that dominate possession. But like you said it's only a prediction and it is based on the "average player" so maybe Wood is just an exceptional player who will continue to outperform his expected attacking returns like Salah, Hazard etc.

It has led you to conclude that, as well as DCL being consistent (10 blanks in his first 13 games to start the season, and 10 consecutive blanks to end the season) that you should also avoid Chris a Wood vs top 6 opposition...

Whereas Wood actually scored against spurs (top 6), double returned vs Man Utd (top six) and scored in both games against Leicester (top 6)...

Sorry I should clarify it was for against the "traditional" top 6. Putting Leicester amongst the other 14 teams.

*arbitrary - he also scored against wolves & is on penalties etc - I think you have to question the usefulness of expected stats when they drive towards conclusions like this

a saying amongst us statisticians is that a stat is only useful if it tells you something you didn't know or don't necessarily agree with. If stats only told us what we already knew from watching then we wouldn't have much use for them.

If stats are telling you sign DCL for his run of 10 blanks & avoid Wood while he scoring during that run - you have to question their interpretation

And yes Wood may have scored in those games. But if I'm going in blind without having watched all the games I will almost certainly back a player who has a consistently good xGI against all teams than a player who's xGI swings so dramatically. Unless of course that player has a string of great games e.g. BUR 13-20.

Signing players blind in FPL is a cardinal sin anyways but in those situations if you have to go there - stats will give a bit of a delusion of accuracy & create a bit of a placebo effect that might be right some of the time...

you should really try to avoid signing players blind though, we only have 38 FT’s so it shouldn’t take a massive effort to watch the player you’re targeting before signing them

Allows me to get KDB Martial and Bruno in before price is an issue. Will then sell Abumeyang ga,e week 3 for best Chelsea mid and upgrade a 4.5 to Robertson or Doherty

Ings or Adams, that is the question here all.

Is Che going to get some good game time this season?

Thinking of going with Che over Ings so I can have Martial on the bench to save 2 FT's for the GW3 and get Bruno and KDB/Stirling in ?

from everything I've listened to which is plenty - Che and Armstrong are nailed at least to start with

on Che at the mo myself, sooner have ings of course but IF he does start and Southampton do as well as we predict then it's hard to see him getting nothing

In direct comparison, Ings is obviously better and will outscore him by good amount of points.

Martial strategy makes sense for long term

Though I would avoid Adams and go for Ayew/Mitrovic.

Chelsea's game is 3 days later after the first kick off. There's too much uncertainty before he even plays. 3 days of ppl changing to martial without him even touching a ball just bothers me and I won't be risking

The sad truth is, it doesn't matter how many he scores in week 1. For those planning to take martial who already has bruno, will tend to transfer him out right after the transfer window for week 2 opens.

      1. ivantys
        • 3 Years

It's mostly due to the super high ownership that he has, which can easily drop by 10% and 0.3 value per day. And what's worse is if he blanks in week 1, ppl won't expect him to score against pool. Those using wild card on week 2 probably gonna have him out for manu players otherwise they won't be using.

Seemed to be very streaky last season - was always either on a streak of blanks, or a streak of destruction

      E.g. GW4-9 last season 1 goal & 5 blanks in 6 fixtures

Then 20 returns in his next 9 games (14G 6A)

Then 7 blanks in he next 8 games etc etc

As Camzy was saying in the HT - a blank vs Brighton would put the cat amongst the pigeons

He also got 9 attacking returns in 2 games vs Mainz last season (6G 3A) so if you can find a premier league team that play like Mainz...

Dier can score or assist from set-pieces. Can head the ball into the net too.
But I'm not sure if he is now the CB partner of Toby. Davies safer for now if we are not sure of Dier's place.

Son of course if you can afford.

For those who didn’t listen to Lateriser’s podcast, they talked about how Adams tends to play more advanced than Ings in the poacher role, and this has been noticeable again in pre-season. Would make sense in terms of why Adams has better underlying stats since restart.

Are they basing it off the eye test or touch maps? Because to me it makes no sense to have two strikers, one of them a great finisher, the other at best average, and play the finisher deeper. Adams has the skillset to play deeper as well.

I've seen this question so many times... no it's not mad, Mourinho is elite in his second season, they've added a ballwinner in Højbjerg, the defense was better after the restart, fixtures are elite. I'm set on Doherty + Davies.

      Might just start without TAA.

His preseason being so scuffed is the only reason I'm considering it. If there was another two weeks or so until we start, then I would sleep happily with him in my team.

          Gives me:
Salah, Auba, Son, Werner, Ings and Martial.

I'd still take Trent and change over any of them.

Hey guys, without any pre season, is Mitro likely to start from GW1?

      Cheers

I'd say those stupid internationals are pre-season run-outs.

Can anyone explain why people are considering the likes of Soucek, Ceballos, even Mark Noble at 5M MID instead of going for a 5M DEF like Keane, Davies/Dier, Egan etc? Baffles me, you would expect the defender to outscore the midfielder, do players just not want to play 5ATB?

To start with, you should be comparing 5.0 mids to 4.5 defenders, because their base price is different (4.5 vs 4.0 respectively).

Secondly, I have no idea I find it quite weird. Ceballos is the only pick I'd consider, and Arsenal are trying to sign more midfielders.

Ah, great point there. Forgot about the base price!

Are you playing 5 at the back?

Yeah he's tripling up on Spurs defence expecting 7/8 clean sheets from first 8 GWs

Incorrect, I expect 5-6 from the first 10 and doubling up.

No, 4-3-3. 5ATB is viable though, we've got great defensive options.

Because the available 4.5 midfield players are complete and utter garbage and you HAVE to buy somebody. For 0.5 more you get a player who has a strong scoring record, albeit abroad, and who might score against anyone in the Premier League. I don't expect his goals to be predictable - but he's a classic cheap set and forget..

        5.0 mid = 4.5 def, not 5.0 def
