How does Kai Havertz compare with Chelsea’s other FPL attacking assets?

Chelsea have continued their spending spree this summer with the acquisition of one of the most coveted young talents in Europe, Kai Havertz.

The attacking midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Blues, following in the footsteps of Timo Werner (£9.5m) in moving to west London from the Bundesliga.

Arguably the club’s biggest statement since the signing of Eden Hazard from Lille, the German has been priced up at £8.5m – in a similar bracket to Christian Pulisic (£8.5m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) – by Fantasy Premier League and has the potential to be a real bargain.

Anyone who dabbled in Fantasy Bundesliga this summer would have been excited by what they saw – including some ‘out of position’ run-outs up front – so we’ll assess his FPL credentials in the article below.

Born in Aachen, Germany in June 1999, Havertz started out in amateur football at just four years of age for Alemannia Mariadorf where his grandfather, Richard, was club chairman. His father was a policeman and mother a lawyer so discipline was something that was impressed upon him at a young age.

It was his grandfather who encouraged him in his younger days, spending time with the youngster knocking down gnomes in the garden with his left foot. Richard’s passing when Havertz was just 10 led the German to join his first professional club, Alemannia Aachen.

He only spent a year with his hometown club, with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in an 8-3 loss impressing them enough to make them sign the youngster. He was highly sought after by clubs across the country, including Borussia Monchengladbach and Koln, but Leverkusen pulled out all the stops to sign the exciting prospect.

He notched seven goals and two assists over 23 appearances in his first season in the U17-Bundesliga West but the next season was where he really shone.

After scoring 18 goals, he was awarded the silver Fritz Walter Medal in the 2015/16 season after being named the second-best German under-17s player; two years later he won the gold in the under-19s category.

In October 2016, at 17 years and 126 days of age, he became the youngest debutant in Bayer Leverkusen’s history and later became their youngest scorer with a strike against Wolfsburg in April.

He went on to become the youngest ever player in the Bundesliga to register 50 appearances. Coincidentally, the previous holder of that record was his new Chelsea teammate, Timo Werner. Havertz was also the youngest ever captain of Leverkusen.

After seven goals and 13 assists in his first two seasons, 2018/19 saw him become a household name in Germany with 17 goals from midfield, becoming the first teenager to hit that total in a Bundesliga season.

Nine of Havertz’s 17 goals gave Leverkusen a 1-0 lead and no player in the Bundesliga opened the scoring more frequently that season. Manager Peter Bosz’s attacking philosophy gave him a platform to flourish and he featured in every single game that campaign.

He took three penalties that season, posting an xG of 13.1 and a non-penalty xG of 10.9; this would indicate that he is a good finisher.

“I guess reading the game has always been one of my strengths. A certain composure on the ball and the ability to make the right choices quickly.” – Kai Havertz

Havertz started off the 2019/20 season by becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 25 goals with a strike against Paderborn on the opening day. He went on to register 12 goals and six assists that campaign with an xG of 9.1. Only one of these was a penalty, which meant his non-penalty xG was 8.3. Again, he outperformed his xG significantly and even upped his xA to 6.2.

Over his last three seasons, his non-penalty xG+xA per 90 numbers have been on the rise every year and he averages an expected goal involvement every other game over that period.

“If you can always be one or two steps ahead of your opponent, you can already win the game, and I think that’s just the player he is.” – Leon Bailey, Havertz’s teammate.

Comparison v other Chelsea assets

Ziyech18.252.220.834.80.070.21
Havertz42.4584143.10.190.44

Unlike Ziyech, Havertz is not a volume shooter who takes a lot of speculative shots from outside the box: his minutes/shot is the lowest in the comparison.

However, a large percentage of the youngster’s efforts are on target (43%), compared to the Moroccan (34.8%). In fact, his goals per shot (0.19) is almost triple that of Ziyech’s (0.07).

What’s even more impressive is that Havertz scores with nearly half of his shots on target (44%) whereas Ziyech is closer to 20%. He even bests Werner, who has goals/shot of 0.18 and goals/shot on target of 0.38.

In terms of creativity, only Ziyech (20.8) created chances more frequently than Havertz (41) last season.

The Prospects

Havertz spent most of the 2019/20 season deployed as a no. 10, also featuring on the right flank and at centre-forward at times. Given that Ziyech’s preferred position is on the right wing and Pulisic has been effective on the left, Lampard is expected to use the German behind his compatriot Werner.

Werner is a very different striker compared to Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.5m). As we saw briefly in the Brighton friendly, he works a lot more off the ball, similar to Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.0m), who was playing as a no. 10, found himself in the box very often as a result of the German’s link-up play and the 4-3-3 that Lampard prefers shaped up into a 4-2-2-2 in transition. Given Havertz’ goal-scoring instincts, the prospects are mouth-watering, to say the least.

Chelsea were second only to Manchester City for expected goals last season, so creating chances was not a problem and by adding an ice-cold finisher like Havertz to their ranks, the Blues’ goal output should go up significantly this season.

With Havertz having had zero minutes with Chelsea in pre-season due to international involvement with Germany, it is perhaps unlikely that Lampard throws him into the fray straight away against Brighton, with a cameo appearance most likely. His minutes should improve as the weeks go on and he settles in, however.

In terms of injury, he has a good overall fitness record with only the muscle tear he suffered in November 2019 causing him to miss more than 15 days out with injury. He has been unavailable for just six games over the past three seasons due to injury or illness.

Reposting as this was at the bottom of the previous page: I'm in a dilemma as the more I've thought about it, the less I actually want to get rid of Aubameyang for KDB, even though I still want KDB.

The only way around this is to triple up on midfield premiums, and switch Mané to KDB instead in GW2 or 3. The tradeoff for this is that I would obviously have to downgrade elsewhere, and for now that means going without a Liverpool defender (at one point I had both).

This always seemed (and still does) like a mad choice, especially when you consider value in terms of points per million so I avoided thinking about it until now. At the moment, I've been keeping a close eye on Liverpool and they have been letting in a substantial amount of goals in preseason, and watching the games some players (notably Salah) just don't seem to be up for it right now.

And yes, I've no doubt things will soon click into gear, and that preseason results historically don't count for much. TAA however has not had much of a preseason, and Robertson looked uncharacteristically poor in the recent Scotland game too. I also understand we don't count on TAA & Robbo for CSs alone, that's why the former has such high ownership due to his attacking returns.

I'm not sure if they will replicate their defensive form from last season when you consider the signings and investment their direct rivals are making, although I wouldn't bet against them being too far off (taking into account they also lost Alisson during the early stages).

I wouldn't recommend anyone copying this approach necessarily, but with games against Chelsea and Arsenal in their first 4 I'm only expecting possibly one or two CSs. After GW4-5 it would only take a maximum of two FT to bring one of them in as their fixtures look better, by which point I should know which player(s) I want to take out.

tl:dr; I'm likely choosing to invest the bulk of my budget in midfield and forwards rather than going with any premium defenders from the beginning (I also want to see how players like Digne and Doherty settle in).

You're overthinking. It's fine to have a provisional plan to get KDB for Auba, but....

You'll play Auba GW1-2. You'll observe Kev GW2. After observing you might still do the transfer, or not. Don't DECIDE until it's time. In the meantime structure your squad to give yourself options.

      1. Kobayashi
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

I don't know if I am - all I'm preparing for is a situation where Auba does very well at the beginning, and I'm left trying to find other ways to bring KDB in, which is a headache I'd rather have now.

At the most, it's only 2FTs to bring a Pool defender in from GW4-5 when they have better fixtures, and it gives me the option of choosing to bring KDB in for the lesser performing premium.

How do you qualify over-thinking? Provisional/Dynamic planning rather the a plan cast in stone is key; is it not? He's setting out a strategy without Liv def to allow a bigger MF budget, which based on solid research from many, clean-sheets are sparser at the beginning of a season.

Or....you could have TAA from the start, give it a couple of weeks, then do an easy double/triple transfer to get KDB in

      1. Kobayashi
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

True, but as they face Arsenal and Chelsea (away) in their first three matches, I'm considering it less of a risk to start with one more premium option which I can later switch to KDB if necessary. Rather than being forced to transfer out Aubameyang, that is.

I've thought about it and honestly, not at all. I'm more than happy to play a budget defender or midfielder if it saves a FT, and allows me to have two United players (or one United, one City) from GW2.

Assuming I get some luck with my captaincy choice, I don't think the one additional budget choice will have much of an impact in GW1, but the saved FT will mean more in GW2.

Aware, not concerned. I know I won't win my weekly cash ML in GW1, but it's a marathon not a sprint. I feel I'll make up the points over GW2-4 as others take hits or get their desired Mancs in more slowly.

    1. Kobayashi

It's unlikely, especially as he won't have played by then but I can see some United players being close to rising. Most will be jumping from Aubameyang, so if he starts well some may be put off the switch early on.

I don't think you can rely on the prices being the same by the time wk 3 comes around. In addition to KDB going up, we could see a lot of people purchasing Havertz if he starts gw 1 and plays well, equally we could see Auba or Alli drop in price if people start moving them on.

    Team no. 10,567.

    Johnstone
    TAA - Lascelles - Mitchell
    Salah - Aubama - Son - Fleck - Ceballos
    Werner - Ings

    Bench: Button - KWP - Taylor - K Davis

    Transfers:
    GW2: Salah > Bruno/KdB/Sterling
    OR
Werner > Martial (depending on price rises, injuries, form...)
GW3: One of the above OR Aubameyang > Bruno/KdB/Sterling
    GW4: Last of the above
GW5: Fleck > Pulisic or Havertz

    Thoughts?

Werner’s integration is going to be very interesting to observe

Last season he seemed to go on these massive all-or-nothing boom/bust cycles with very little middle ground

    E.g. GW4-9 last season 1 goal & 5 blanks in 6 fixtures

Swiftly followed by 20 returns in his next 9 games (14G 6A)

Then 7 blanks in he next 8 games etc etc

As Camzy was saying in the HT - a blank vs Brighton would put the cat amongst the pigeons

    1. R.C
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

There's one game where he scored 4 goals I think (big outlier)

But I think his xG is among the top5 in Europe

      1. R.C
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

I do feel he'll blank against Brighton too as he's not that effective against deep lying defensive teams

      2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

He got 6 returns in one game vs Mainz last October - 3G 3A

And then followed it up with another hattrick in the second game against them in May lol - 6G 3A in 2 games vs Mainz...

Then he got another Hattrick vs Gladbach back at the start of the season...

So streaky its unbelievable - that little 9 game flurry from November to January was where he did most of his scoring for the year

        1. R.C
          • 6 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Oh yeah 3G 3A that's the one - yeah sorta streaky I guess but see some decent consistent returns here and there as well

He could be perfect for captaincy

    2. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

I'd be doing to eye test. Is he slow and fluffing chances like Tammy, or is he not getting service from a midfield that might gel next match?

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

He’s certainly not slow in the literal sense with all that pace... but he does seem very boom/bust/cyclical

Kind of the polar opposite of say a Danny Ings or a Jimmy, who drip feed their goals almost one per game for (particularly for Ings) maximum bonus point damage

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Hmm. Maybe the wise policy is not to have him every week, but wait until he appears to be on the start of a streak, get him in and captain him. And if you have him (as I do), do not consider giving him the armband until he's definitely off on one!

If Ziyech wasn't unsure with his injury I would have had him as a chelsea asset and probably got Kane instead. Ziyech looks like a more consistent player to at least be always creating chances and be in amongst the goals as well. Werner less of a poacher atm and more like a winger cutting in at times.

    A) Alli + Pereira > Greenwood + Foden (-4)

This is being split into two ridiculous sides. People apparently 'panicking' and people who have no doubt.

It just throws some doubt into the mix and it's fair for that to be the case because Vinegre has been treated by many as a 4.5 that can be expected to return mid to premium points. With doubt over him many people are forced to consider the scenario where he isn't nailed, or loses his place, and reasses the balance of their whole defence.

It's fair enough, it's the sensible thing to do, to look for an alternative 4.5 who might fulfill the same role, and if there isn't one, which there isn't, consider whether it's better to start with another player and jump on vinegar with some more info
