A Fantasy Premier League veteran of 11 years, Darren Wiles has an incredible track record with three top 1k finishes in the last four seasons.

Unusually for me, I was a little late to the Fantasy Football party this season. All while most managers were busy planning their drafts since the launch, I was busy packing up boxes in the process of moving house.

I have been desperate to get started and now that mission has been completed, I have finally been able to start planning for Gameweek 1.

It’s easy to see why moving house is widely regarded as a stressful time in our lives but let me tell you…it’s a walk in the park compared to working out how we’re going to get in the Manchester United and Manchester City assets into our teams for Gameweek 2.

So, after registering my team, assessing the fixtures and diving into some data in the Premium Members Area, I now feel ready and equipped to share my current draft along with a few ideas I have.

A bit maverick..but could be gold.

    Ramsdale
    TAA VVD Robbo
    Auba Son ASM JWP
    Werner Ings Mitro

    Button. KWP. Mitchell Bissouma

    0.5 ITB to get Martial

Don't like double Pool defense let alone triple. Their fixtures aren't good for it.

I consider Robbo + TAA more like wingers with great end product. Clean sheets are a nice bonus. I don't think There's going to be many sub 8.0 midfielders that will outscore them.

The problem is that comparison isn't really all there is to it. You have to weigh comparative value based on their position.

7.0m def + 4.5m mid vs 4.5m def + 7.0m mid. The cumulative totals likely favor the latter.

That's why I said 8.0 mid, because mids starting value is 0.5 higher. You can get a decent defender for 4.5 but for midfield you need at least 5.0 to get anything acceptable.

Team building is all about making compromises. I just think TAA offers better value than 8.0 mid and Robbo better than 7.5 mid. I could be very wrong tho. But you can make pretty good team with them two in it.

Interesting insight. Problem is there is no 6.5m or 7.0m mid to replace VVD or Robbo. Zaha or Grealish for instance won’t outscore Robbo. Over a season. James Rod, would be the obvious one, but could be priced at 8.0m same as Rich. I have VVD and Biss for instance, and as Biss is bench fodder I can’t see a 6.5m attacker outscoring VVD.

      Ooh, VERY similar to mine.
Captaincies not a problem. Assuming Auba will > KDB or Sterling, you've for City, and occasionally Werner and TAA to take up the reins. Btw I've gone for Bruno rather than Martial for that extra captaincy option.

Cheers Andy! How will you work Bruno in? Martial is an easy 0.5 upgrade but Bruno requires 1.5 ITB. I don't see Salah having a strong start and like you said before I see Robbo and TAA as high valued mids.

Sterling looked bright and fit in the England game, correct? Definitely considering him for that GW3-7 run, could captain against West Ham and Leicester. Aguero too in my thoughts.

fixtures wouldn't affect KDB or Sterling but Pep roulette will. I am considering KDB come GW3

Fixtures do affect them, looking at lateriser's table Sterling is more effective against weaker teams. He's also got that reputation for exploding early, when he's looking good I want him for sure, even over KDB.

I am in the same boat. Starting with bruno and will see which of kdb/sterling needs to walk in for son/auba.

Right now on sterling, but could easily be auba

About 4 or 5 players in every draft I see could not really be described as nailed and maybe less nailed by the end of the transfer window, and we have Covid ... what’s going on ? 🙂

I'm in no doubt my squad lacks balance. I've gone for 3 premium defenders, 2 mids and 2 strikers. The rest are muppets. But I prefer it to a full squad of second-rates.

      1. Hotdogs for Tea
        • 11 Years

it’s about finding 2 mill really, not a full squad of second raters?

TAA, Auba, Salah, Jiminez, Ings, Mitro, Son/Alli ASM, Soucek etc as the mainstay maybe, Stephens or Bissouma if you must or a punt on any of the 5.0s, Egan, WP, Taylor, Dunk, Coady,

not settled on anything yet though

Yeah, I mean if the choice is 4 premiums and muppets or 2 premiums and lots of second-tier, having tried all combos, I'm actually happier with the imbalanced option!

Mo Salah or No Salah? Which set up do you prefer? I keep flipping between them

    A- .5 m in bank

    McCarthy
    TAA Dier Justin
    Aubameyang Salah Alli Saka Soucek
    Werner Ings

    Button KWP Brewster/4.5 Taylor

    B- 1.5 m in bank

    McCarthy
    TAA Doherty Robertson
    Aubameyang Son ASM Saka
    Werner Ings Mitrovic

    Button KWP Soucek Mitchell

This pro pundit being in favor of heavy at the back is interesting.

I definitely see the merits of Doherty and Robertson as basically OoP defenders.

    A) Robertson, Saka
    B) KWP, Alli

This is what the option looks like. I can swap Alli to Havertz by downgrading Auba in GW3 which is why I preferred B in my current team but if you just ignore that 8.5m ish midfield price point, A looks pretty nice.

    1. Karan_G14
      • 10 Years

The 8.5m mids bracket is the one you don't want to ignore. Usually we get a mid from this bracket who makes a mockery of that price tag.

Exactly. Havertz looks like he could be the one to do that.

If Pool had better fixtures to start with I would definitely recommend double Pool def but because they have mixed fixtures I think one def is enough for the first 4-5 gameweeks.

For the ghost team yes it’s the optimal points per million strategy.

For the main team there are other factors at play - especially prices that mean one has to increase the millions, as well as optimise points per million. Form and fixtures also a thing that differentiates the two ways to play the game.

My ghost team will finish top 1mln, the real one top 100k.

I thought about having Leno last year and glad I bailed on that idea. Arsenal's defensive stats aren't exactly great even since Arteta joined. Not worth the extra 0.5m over McCarthy imo.

The rest is pretty good I guess. TAA not optional though for me. I'd find the 0.5m by doing Soucek > Bissouma. You have good enough starters already.

I'd say he's the only Arsenal defender nailed at this stage.

    can anyone help/advise please?

whats the consensus on having a united / city asset and benching the first week or ignoring and then a hit / transfers to get in week 2 or 3?

    1. gunnerboy
      • 14 Years
      6 years, 10 days ago

id rather take a hit week 2.

I think the consensus is to do what I'm doing and have 1 on the bench for GW1. I've tried 2 and I don't like my GW1 team but 1 is doable. I'll watch the games of GW2 and do 2FT for GW3.

There are those who talk about hits and early wildcards, but I skim past that nonsense myself.

Benching exactly one. Roll FT in GW2 and then take it from there in GW3.

1 on bench, free transfer for the other.

Will work fine until you realise that 1 of your players got suspended, 1 has covid, 1 didn’t even start and someone like dcl scores 2 in wk1 with 3 plum fixtures coming up and is now essential.

Thoughts on this draft? 1.5itb, perhaps too much to hold but I like the flexibility to move onto players early.

    Johstone
    Dier KWP TAA
    Ziyech Soucek Saka Auba Salah
    DCL Adams

    Button Martial Taylor Mitchell

Soucek will be my first on bench

I have somehow ended up with Johnstone and not sure why. Not completely sold on the strikers and have a feeling Ziyech will miss GW1

        • 8 Years

its as he is actually a good pick 🙂

Ziyech can become Kai if we get press conference news. Ideally i'd like adams to Werner by doing ziyech down but I think i need that 8m mid slot for flexibility.

        Hows your team coming along?

          McCarthy Johnstone

          Auba Havertz Alli Bowen Keita
          Werner Antonio Adams

Thought about it for a while and when I saw Manc clubs blanking it made it easier to pull something together. Think Soucek will be in for Keita if he is available to allow a Johnstone upgrade.

Ok, I’ve just been doing a bit of number crunching using the spread betting markets and trying to compare their quotes with FPL prices to try and find some cheapish value midfielders to accompany the two premiums. Basically, I’ve combined their goals and assists quotes and tried to factor in clean sheets a little. If the layers have got their sums right the bottom line is this...get Saka and ASM, ditch Soucek and don’t waste your time trying to squeeze in Delle with two 4.5s.

That's interesting. I was thinking that Soucek would be among the best value players in the game if he can maintain his form from the end of last season.

If Saka was assured enough gametime, he'd be my 5.5 of choice. But I don't suppose the bookies can tell us that.

ASM is getting more interesting in the light of Toons' incomings.

    Anyone else considering a Sterling/KDB double-up from GW4?

Don't have space for two 12M MIDs but Sterling for GW3-7 is currently in my thoughts, I can add KDB later on WC10.

my plan is to have auba and salah. Auba to become one of KDB/Sterling after gw2. The salah spot i'll try something new to me and move that premium slot and use transfers there for the best captaincy, that slot will be Mo, Mane, Sterling (double up), Bruno, Auba depending on form and fixtures

I'll be watching their GW2 with interest. I will get one, but with 2FT it's not impossible I get 2 from Kev, Raz and Kun.

The projection tool shows Rashford will match Bruno's points for the first 6GWs and the season.

How far would you agree with that and go with Rashford over Bruno?

He seemed knackered ever since he got back from injury after the COVID break, he has hardly looked to beat his defender despite presented with many one on one opportunities....do you think it was just a blip that he will be back to his best or his injury is affecting him?

All these players like Mitrovic, Adams and Calvert-Lewin.... Don't you feel theyre a waste?

I'd rather spend more on a solid front three that guarentees you goals all season. Vardy, Werner, Martial, etc...I'd honestly rather just have a shite defence

More than one way to skin a cat. Cheap defences can work.

Speaking as a player with a front three of 9.5M+ players, why would they be a waste? Like Mitrovic is, but DCL and Adams have great fixtures and a strong team to service them. They're great punts and have showed potential in the past.

Big fan of this draft I have landed on. Give me 3 x liverpool, Auba and Bruno! Bruno in for a 343 in GW 2. Can then decide on Werner to Martial or Salah/Auba --> KDB or Sterling. Sets it all up well IMO

    McCarthy
    VVD TAA Vinagre Mitchell
    Salah Auba ASM Soucek
    Werner Mitro

    Button Bruno Davies Douglas
