Wolves 2-0 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Rayan Aït-Nouri (£5.0m), Daniel Podence (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Pedro Neto (£5.5m)
  • Bonus points: Aït-Nouri x3, Nelson Semedo x2 (£5.5m), Neto x1

CRY WOLF

Fantasy Premier League managers finally got a definitive clue to Nuno Espirito Santo’s long-term plans for his defence this season in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

And, much to the dismay of the 22.4% in possession of Romain Saïss (£5.3m), the top-scoring FPL defender in 2020/21, we received confirmation that his role is diminishing.

The return to fitness of Marçal (£4.9m) and the arrival of Rayan Aït-Nouri (£5.0m) had been creeping up on Saïss for the last few weeks as he stood in at left wing-back.

But the emergence of Max Kilman (£4.2m) has caught him between a rock and a hard place considering that his old job has now been taken too. Crucially, against Palace, Saïss stayed on the Wolves bench. Helpful for avoiding one-point cameos but increasing the need for nearly a quarter of managers to draw on their bench.

Of FPL defenders, only Trent Alexander-Arnold (33.2%) and the injured Tyrick Mitchell (25.7%) came into Gameweek 7 with more owners than Saïss, who actually became the most popular in that position among the top 10,000 managers on Friday night.

The fact that he is no longer guaranteed starts could mean a large number of managers already have one transfer booked in for Gameweek 8, especially those who feel they cannot bench a non-playing asset at £5.3m. Interestingly, 8.2% of all managers own both Saïss and Mitchell, although the latter is easier to keep on the bench for a few weeks.

Accordingly, we could see a flash-sale of the Wolves man in the coming days, especially as his team’s upcoming fixtures now take a turn for the worse from a defensive perspective anyway. Wolves travel to Leicester, Arsenal and Liverpool between now and Gameweek 11.

RAYAN ADVENTURES

Meanwhile, any hope that Saïss might somehow fight his way back to either left wing-back or centre-back were dashed by fantastic performances from both Aït-Nouri and Kilman against Crystal Palace.

Considering he is a natural left wing-back, it should come as no surprise that Aït-Nouri offered a much better balance to the Wolves side than Saïss did. He was also on-hand to blast Cheikhou Kouyaté‘s (£5.0m) first-half clearance into the bottom corner of Vicente Guaita‘s (£5.0m) net to give Wolves a well-deserved lead.

Bombing forward with intent and energy, the 19-year-old matched what Nelson Semedo (£5.5m) offered on the right and, as a result, Crystal Palace struggled to cope with how wide the pitch became.

“(Aït-Nouri) is brilliant. He’s come in and learned the role inside out. He’s really sharp. Turns you inside out with his bag of tricks. Tonight, I thought he was brilliant.” – Conor Coady

“(Aït-Nouri) played good. He has a lot of talent. There is a lot to improve on the defensive aspect and the shape of the team. But to score on your debut is great.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

DEAR PODENCE

Arguably, the chief beneficiaries of the impact Aït-Nouri had on the Wolves team were for Daniel Podence (£5.5m) and Pedro Neto (£5.5m), who each got their third attacking returns of the season in Gameweek 7.

Each wing-back taking up advanced positions, and offering energy and enthusiasm to track back, although, admittedly Aït-Nouri was not as good at that part of the job as Semedo (which Nuno picked up on, based on the above quote). Generally, the extra pace in these areas allowed the two wingers much more freedom to roam forward and cause problems against Palace.

Podence was particularly lively in the early stages, as Wolves finally rediscovered how to start games on the front foot. It is telling that Aït-Nouri’s 18th-minute goal was their first scored in the first half since Gameweek 1.

Then, after teeing up Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) for a seventh-minute headed effort and watching Guaita palm away a 10th-minute curled strike, Podence finally rewarded the patience of his 3.6% ownership with a first attacking return since Gameweek 2.

Netting his first goal since this same fixture last season, the former Olympiacos man ghosted in at the back post to slot under Guaita after Neto had found space behind Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) for a cross.

ON THE SPOT

The 482,570 Fantasy managers who signed Wilfried Zaha (£7.3m) for Gameweek 7 were, naturally, disappointed to see him pick up just one point at Wolves.

The fact that Nuno’s men have kept four clean sheets from a possible seven now arguably makes his rather quiet display feel like more of an anomaly, considering he averaged 10 points per away game before Friday night.

With Leeds (home), Burnley (away), Newcastle (home) and West Bromwich Albion (away) up next, there is still plenty of reasons to be positive about Zaha’s credentials.

Not least because he might be back on penalties again after Luka Milivojevic‘s (£5.7m) short-lived return to the Crystal Palace side.

During the club captain’s absence, Zaha has taken on responsibility for spot-kicks. But, when the Eagles were awarded one in the first half at Molineux, it was, unsurprisingly, Milivojevic who prepared to take it.

In the end, the penalty was ruled out for an offside in the build-up but the fact the Serbian collected the ball and stood over it spoke volumes.

However, Zaha owners were handed something of a reprieve as Milivojevic was sent off for violent conduct in the closing stages. At present, his ban lasts three matches, which would, of course, be ideal for anyone wanting Zaha to take some more penalties.

That said, it would be worth keeping an eye on whether or not Palace decide to appeal the decision and try to shorten the suspension.

“I’m disappointed about the red card. I personally thought it was a fair challenge from Luka Milivojević. But the referee, unfortunately, had a different opinion.” – Roy Hodgson

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Kilman, Coady, Boly; Aït-Nouri, Neves, Dendoncker, Semedo; Neto (Moutinho 76′), Jiménez (F Silva 90+1′), Podence (Traoré 76′).

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; van Aanholt, Dann, Kouyaté, Clyne; Schlupp (Eze 65′), Riedewald, Milivojevic, Townsend (Ayew 72′); Zaha, Batshuayi (Benteke 84′).

LESSONS LEARNED FROM FPL GAMEWEEK 7

Romain Saiss was the top FPL point scoring defender going into GW7, however Nuno showed no mercy, benching the makeshift wingback for the new kid in town last night.

Saiss owners, or indeed anyone else expecting to spend a transfer in defence next week — what are your initial thoughts as the Gameweek swings into action? — which defenders are you considering and why?

    — Ait Nouri (£5.0m) rewarded his [checks] 0.0% ownership with a goal, and a fine 15 point haul to rub further salt into the open wounds of Saiss’ forsaken owners. But it’s Maximilian Kilman (£4.2m) who is likely to draw any direct Wolves-to-Wolves Saiss sales having seemingly ousted the Moroccan from the LCB slot for at least the time being.

    — Other potential options include West Ham defensive assets ahead of an enviable fixture run. An appetite for RWB Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) in particular seems to be growing within the community.

    — Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) could revive interest in some quarters after completing 90mins for the first time since his return from long term injury — although preseason fantasies of penalty duties still seem doubtful due to Zaha’s recent eagerness and efficiency from the spot in Milivojevic’s absence.

    — Lastly, Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) has delivered 2 cleansheets, 2 assists and a goal in just 3 premier league starts for Chelsea, and providing he remains injury free, looks to be untouchable in the LB berth. Chilwell already boasts a rapidly growing ownership level above 20% and with relatively favourable fixtures ahead could prove a valuable medium term hold.

I'll be downgrading him to the likes on Soufal or Lamptey in order to upgrade a mid to Bruno in a couple of weeks.
It was fun whilst it lasted Saiss!

West Ham defender for me, but Saiss may get an extra week by default due to needing to get rid of Mitro & possibly Trent (in order to afford a better Mitro replacement than Wilson/Bamford).

I’ve the fabled trio of doom to deal with — Reece James, Saiss and Mitchell, so at least one will need to make way this week.

Chilwell, Kilman or Bellerin are at the top of my radar, with Saiss likely to be the first on the chopping block.

Without a WC in hand the temptation to ‘fix’ multiple slots with a hit or two, and instead allocate future transfers to desirable attacking moves will be very high!

I think that hit is not needed here.
James can easy start next game so wouldnt rush to sell him esp for a hit. Mitchell wasnt playing yesterday because of a knock so he may be still first choice. With that in mind plus CP fixtures and considering his price he can easy sray in our teams. In worst case he can be 3rd slot bench player. But Saiss needs to go defo also because of Wolves fixtures (same reason I wouldnt buy Kilman) so its a no brainer to sell him for Chilwell who is best pick in def atm.

I’m also looking at Bellerin who has four favourable home fixtures in the next six games and Dallas who is second in the ICT rank for threat and still available at a cost price of £4.5m.

Morning.Wolves has some tough fixtures coming up so i don't think Ait Nouri is a good pick.
I read somewhere that Coufal is a safer pick than Masuaku because the latter could loose his place if Benrahma starts. But what if Moyes decide to start Yarmolenko? In a 3-4-3 Yarmolenko could easily start.
I own Pva and i was so frustrated last night. He deserved an assist.Good game, good fixtures on free kicks and itrust Palace's defence. The only problem is that he is expensive.
        Chilwell is a great pick.
The truth is that are not so many good defenders around atm.Can we trust Leicester's defence?Maybe a cheap defender from Newcastle?

Got my eye on Vestergaard of Southampton - passes the eye test.
Last four game points are 6-7-7-6 which included Everton & Chelsea.
At 4.5m and with fairly good fixtures up to mid December could be a nice punt.

National lockdown expected to be announced on Monday.

Schools/universities are to remain open but I can't imagine that the football season can continue if there is a lockdown in place. Not sure what has happened in other countries that have gone back into lockdown.

Unfortunate from an FPL point of view if you have players that are due to play in Monday's games!

I can't see European games being halted while domestic games go ahead. Worst case (and unlikely) scenario would be English teams playing home games in a different country as alternative would mean all English teams forfeiting their places in European cups which would never happen.

      Re: mainly Saiss' replacement

      Cresswell (0.01 xG90 + 0.20 xA90) - 5m LCB
      Coufal (0.03 xG90 + 0.07 xA90) - 4.5m RWB
      Masuaku (0.02 xG90 + 0.34 xA90) - 4.5m LWB

I know the sample size is quite small, but Masuaku looks the best out of the three so far. The only problem is he is the most likely to drop out if WHU revert to 4atb - how likely is that?

      TAA (mci)

You don't know that, Saiss has not played so no 1 pointers... yet. Depends on who's coming in from the bench right? In my case it will be Justin. Will see.

It's already sweet revenge nonetheless. I'm sure some of those Saiss owners were hoping for Wolves to concede after he went off. Nice to see those evil ppl getting punished.

      Guaita Steer
Chilwell Saiss* Dunne * Mitchel Justin
      Salah Son Zaha Grealish Reed
      Dcl Kane Jimenez

1.7itb 1 ft . Thinking of doing Dunne - Coufal this gw and next gw to move out Saiss and maybe Guaita if he doesnt make some points.
What is critical to get rid this gw?

Lol. Laporte is not even close to nailed. Fixtures coming thick and fast, everyone will be rotated, with the exception of Ederson because he doesn't need to run very much. Sterling has the best fitness out of the 3 and is the most versatile so is comparatively the most nailed. KDB needs to be managed to avoid burnout and further injuries. Laporte has the worst injury record of the lot and there is zero chance he plays all the games

Looked good at first glance, but won’t that give you the benching headache from hell?! Maybe just get Chilwell in and roll the other FT for the IB, as that will give you more flexibility to change your attackers with the fixture swings?

Hey buddy, thanks for the feedback. It’s either I make these moves or keep Jimenez and offload Saiss for a defender up to 5.1m. The latter would enable me to roll a free transfer into the international break. Really not sure what to do. Any thoughts mate?
