Kevin De Bruyne (£11.7m) is proving to be a very effective differential among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

The Belgian’s latest double-figure haul, the second in as many Gameweeks, could cause some restructuring at this level, especially with Manchester City facing West Bromwich Albion (home), Southampton (away) and Newcastle (home) between now and Gameweek 15.

The crux of De Bruyne’s appeal is the fact that despite relatively low ownership among the top 10k, he has quickly become a reliable and powerful captain candidate.

Manchester City’s number 17 was the most skippered at this level for Gameweek 11, earning the backing of 24.6% ahead of a home meeting with Fulham.

Such support is sure to be welcome for his owners, just low enough to turn a 28-point haul into a significant green arrow.

These managers were helped, of course, by Bruno Fernandes (£10.9m), the best of the rest in terms of captaincy, scoring only seven points at West Ham.

There was, arguably, some fortune, or lack thereof depending on your view, in the Manchester United man’s exploits though.

He played just 45 minutes after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer benched him at West Ham but his man-of-the-match performance in the second half realistically should have resulted in at least three assists, not one.

De Bruyne captainers will have one eye over their shoulder at this point too as Harry Kane (11.9%), Jamie Vardy (11.2%) and Mohamed Salah (9.7%) are yet to play in Gameweek 11, facing Arsenal, Sheffield United and Wolves respectively on Sunday.

As you can see, De Bruyne is not even among the top-five most-owned midfielders among the top 10k for Gameweek 11, although we do expect that to change in the near future.

Unsurprisingly, Jack Grealish (£7.7m) saw his ownership at this level drop by 10.4 percentage points between Gameweeks 10 and 11, influenced, of course by Aston Villa’s meeting with Newcastle suffering a coronavirus (COVID-19) postponement.

Following a double-figure haul against Southampton, Fernandes was the most popular midfielder in the transfer market for the top 10k, as he displaced Son Heung-min (£9.5m) as the most fashionable in this position.

Enjoying an ownership rise of 10.6 percentage points, he is now owned by 72.4% at this level.

Can Diogo Jota (£6.9m) cover the attacking threat of Salah this season? That’s the question bandied around the Fantasy community this week and it looks as if the top 10k have given us their answer following the Gameweek 11 deadline.

For the first time in 2020/21, the former Wolves man has earned more backers in the top 10k than his Egyptian colleague.

48.7% of them now own Jota, while only 31.7% are in possession of Salah.

With Newcastle’s trip to Aston Villa removed from Gameweek 11 (at the time of writing), the Free Hit ended up as the most popular chip among the top 10k FPL managers this weekend.

That is no surprise considering Emiliano Martínez (£4.8m) sits in 24.5% of squads at this level and 53.7% are holding onto Grealish.

4.3% of the top 10k used the Free Hit this week, while 2.9% opted to fix their postponement-related problems with a Wildcard.

Curiously, De Bruyne was not the most popular midfielder in top 10k Free Hit squads, selected only by 56.6% of these.

That said, he was still the most fashionable Manchester City option with Mahrez appearing in 47.1% of these squads.

Instead, Fernandes (76.4%) and Son (60.1%) were both chosen by more top 10k Free Hit managers than De Bruyne for Gameweek 11.

These squads also highlight the feeling of futility in terms of predicting Guardiola’s rotation policy.

Given João Cancelo‘s (£5.5m) apparent loss of favour in the manager’s mind, 35.1% of these Free Hitting managers chose Kyle Walker (£6.2m) as their Manchester City defender for Gameweek 11, only to see him miss out on a place in the matchday squad entirely.

Those who Wildcarded largely built their squads in line with the general top 10k template with some key differences.

De Bruyne was chosen by just over half of these managers, Salah was not among the top-five midfielders and roughly 60% of them went for Son and Jota respectively.

Lessons learned from FPL Gameweek 11

Rashford and Mahrez are probably the two players who I always seem to get at the wrong time. Tried to be too clever by getting Rashford ahead of Bruno 4 GWs ago, didn't sell him for Mahrez last GW, finally sold him this GW for Mahrez and then he scores! Not a lot of points but that FT would have been valuable to get Salah next GW. Always say 'never again' but I keep on falling into this trap!

Have to stick for atleast 3 weeks and then reasses with those kind of punts. Switching them every other week is almost asking for trouble.

Mahrez easily could have hauled 10+. It wasn't a poor decision.

Yeah, watched the game too. Deserving that Mahrez got 1bps without any goal or assist. Have Werner and he has done the same for few GWs now. Difficult to sell because he could have hauled double figures most weeks with the chances he gets but somehow doesn't finish it. Some poor finishing for someone who was known to be very clinical in front of goal.

If you just need someone to come off the bench yes

If you need Ayling to play regularly then can go Davis but Brewster is deffo worth 0.2 more

Which do you think is a more damning indictment about my relationship with FPL:

    A) Sulking all day/week/month when a bad GW
    B) Spending all day checking my GW rank and mini league position when I have a good one...

(Spoiler: one of these two outcomes happens more than the other)

I don't get the narrative that DCL has tough fixtures?

Chelsea : This one probably is, but many expected Bamford to blank and benched him etc. Wouldn't put it past DCL to grab something either

Leicester : Been far from solid defensively, lost to Fulham and Zorya, could see this being a high scoring game

Arsenal : They looked defensively solid few weeks back but don't think this is a difficult fixture atm

Sheffield United : This Is arguably a differential captaincy shout for him?

Man City : Genuinely hard fixture, no doubt.

But DCL vs Big6 opposition this season
    Goal vs Spurs
    Goal vs Liverpool
Assist vs United (underserved though 😛 )

He has 2 blanks all season and I don't see him getting many more even in those fixtures personally...

Chelsea and Man City yeah but the 3 games in the middle?

Leicester and Arsenal are still two of the tougher teams in the league IMO, even if one believes DCL can "score against anyone".

Fair enough, if you see those 2 fixtures to be difficult then it's definitely a difficult run for him overall.

And maybe Soyuncu,Ndidi, Pereira returning should help Leicester. With Arsenal it's gonna be all about how their confidence is post NLD

One of those picks which I'm going to stick with as long as he keeps ticking irrespective of fixtures. Don't want to be proactive in this case.

what, like a game being cancelled, players rotated or injured after the midweek games or players catching Covid ? 😉

it’s not just the players you buy that may get injured, it’s the rest of your squad, plus rotation after seeing the midweek lineups, plus Covid issues etc ... I have been priced out of what I want to do, but there are always other options that invariably work out better 🙂

And the flip side of that is I got 9 out last week and one of my best GWs of the season so far.
What does a likely 1 or 2 pointer off the bench matter anyway in the over scheme of things. Just different approaches is all I wouldn’t say one is wrong. I would say since I have chased value I finish seasons very strong due to the squad I can build with that cash.

Pulisic less than 2% owned and at a nice price and if Ziyech is out for awhile surely that frees up a spot for Pulisic.
Still too injury prone himself or a really good diff?
The only one I could lose for him is Grealish and he still has some really nice fixtures ahead.

Well I found that out to my cost the last two weeks.
I got Sterling and Cancelo in the week before for blanks.
This week I took a hit for Cancelo to Walker.
You can only laugh or cry.
Still I have had 2 very decent GWs but they could have been so much better. My stupid move for this week cost me about 10 points but hoping to claw it back if Walker is more likely to start medium term.

I am also thinking there must be something else going on with Walker. Benched in CL and not in the squad at all this weekend. Even by Pep’s standard that weird. It could be that he wanted to give him a decent break and means he will play a few now. That’s the hope anyway.

How essential do think Salah is really? Seems off pace and Jota has been getting better chances. Still know I’ll be burned for not having him..

    As it stands:
    Meslier. Button
    Bellerin, Robbo, Chilwell, Mendy, Dunne.
    Grealish, Bruno, KDB, Jota, Bissouma.
    Kane, DCL, Wilson.

    0.1itb.
    A) Mendy, Kane, > KWP, Bamford to free up funds,
    B) Kane, Bissouma, > Bamford, Son
    C) Leave as is

Realistically it’s going to take a few transfers to manage to squeeze Salah back in and doesn’t seem worth it. Probably too much money tied up in defence. Any thoughts?
