Giroud outshines Werner again as Chelsea regress at both ends of the pitch

Wolves 2-1 Chelsea

  • Goals: Daniel Podence (£5.4m), Pedro Neto (£5.7m) | Olivier Giroud (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Owen Otasowie (£4.5m), Vitinha (£4.8m) | Ben Chilwell (£6.2m)
  • Bonus points: Podence x3, Neto x2, Chilwell x1

GIROUD NOT TO

Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) is fast becoming the key Fantasy Premier League forward at Chelsea as Timo Werner (£9.4m) continues to struggle in wide areas.

The former Arsenal striker scored the Blues’ only goal of the game as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Wolves, the second in his last three Premier League starts.

And if you go back to the beginning of Project Restart, no Chelsea player has found the net more often than Giroud (eight goals), who is working his way back to the top of the pecking order.

The Frenchman has started each of the last three Premier League matches for Frank Lampard’s side, lasting 90 minutes once and having his minutes managed around the 70-minute mark in two of them.

Any last remaining Werner owners who like the look of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures West Ham (home), Arsenal (away), Aston Villa (home) might do well to consider his signature – especially considering the German international is without a goal since Gameweek 8 and has blanked three times in the last four matches.

TRANSFER TIMO?

Werner’s biggest problem in recent outings has been how isolated Chelsea have left him on the flanks of the front-three, whether or not Lampard stations him on the left or right-hand side.

Against Wolves, Christian Pulisic‘s (£8.2m) first start since Gameweek 11 pushed Werner onto the right, where even his most insightful of runs were regularly ignored by his team-mates.

So much of Chelsea’s play went down the left-hand side through Pulisic who did provide some cut and thrust but, very soon, it became predictable and one-dimensional.

But the nail in Werner’s FPL coffin came after Lampard switched his wingers, allowing the former RB Leipzig man some time on the left of the front-three, only for Chelsea to send everything down the right-hand side through Pulisic again.

“Pulisic provides us with some width and he’s very good at winning his one-on-ones. He’s had a few issues with the hamstring but he’s trained so he’s straight back in.” – Frank Lampard

It is certainly worth adding that Chelsea sorely miss Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m), Lampard’s side resembling the laboured outfit from the early weeks of the season during the Moroccan’s last injury.

“No (there wasn’t enough) after the goal. We didn’t hang on either. Performance (has changed). It’s what gives you results. Maybe the lads think they’re playing well and the second you think you’re playing well, anything can happen.” – Frank Lampard

CATCHING A CHILL

Despite a recent speight of clean sheets, Chelsea’s defensive credentials have taken a knock in their last two matches.

Between Gameweeks 6 and 10, the Blues conceded just one goal, letting in three since the start of Gameweek 12.

Giving up a lead at Molineux given Wolves’ current state of affairs is also rather alarming.

Before Tuesday night, they were yet to find the net in a game which Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) had not started this season.

Not including Fantasy assists, the Mexican was involved in a significant 31% of Wolves’ 109 Premier League goals since promotion before Gameweek 13 – so he has been a huge miss.

Accordingly, when Daniel Podence (£5.4m) cut inside Reece James (£5.3m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.2m) and fired past Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) it ended Wolves’ longest run without a Premier League goal since their promotion in 2018 (296 minutes).

Wolves chose James’ flank as one to target as they wound through the gears in the final third of the match, the right-back escaping a penalty thanks to the VAR, but leaving Kurt Zouma (£5.7m) exposed to a Pedro Neto (£5.7m) run in the closing stages.

The Portuguese winger came into Gameweek 13 inside the top five best-value midfielders of the season (offering 9.6 points per million spent) and, by netting at Molineux took his attacking returns tally there to four in his last five.

Whether Chelsea’s defence can be trusted against West Ham is, of course, now under scrutiny in the Fantasy community while upcoming meetings with Aston Villa (home) and Manchester City (home) are also somewhat ominous.

Chilwell might have done enough to earn a stay of execution though, topping this game for key passes thanks to his involvement in corners and Chelsea’s persistence on playing the ball down their left-flank, producing his first attacking return since Gameweek 8.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Saïss, Coady, Boly; Marçal, Neves, Dendoncker (Otasowie 46′), Semedo; Podence (Vitinha 90′), F Silva (A Traoré 61′), Neto.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): E Mendy; Chilwell, T Silva, Zouma, R James; Havertz (Havertz 71′), Kanté, Mount; Pulisic, Giroud (Abraham 71′), Werner.

Only had 3 players so far and on 8 points, my cap is Kane. It’ll probably be a low scoring week all round tbh.
My fixtures for the weekend are nice, looking forward to it and saving a ft

Since I already have Dias, KdB, Grealish, Zaha & DCL for the BGW there is case to be made for holding the FH for DGW19.

But then I also have Chilwell, Salah, Bruno, Bamford which makes me think I should use my 5 transfers to get DGW19 players and FH in BGW18.

Want to keep KDB & Dias regardless of blanks & doubles given that there fixtures are good all the way up till GW22.

            It's very confusing!!

The number of matches you get if you don't play BB is similar I think.
              With FH18 you get 11 in GW18 and +/- 18 in DGW19 (with 4 SGWers) = 29
With FH19 you get 22 then (if you competely skip City and Spurs with good fixtures) + about 8 in BGW18 = 30

Yes I agree I don't think there will be much of a difference in the number of players I get.

But there will be a difference in the team I have from GW20 onwards depending on when I FH.

Broadly it comes down Kane, Son, Dier vs Salah, Ings & Dallas/Coufal from GW20 onwards.

I think FH18 gives you more freedom, because you can still buy Spurs/City now and just accept that they have one match in GW19 (good fixtures anyway). And you can't do that with FH19.

                  I'm looking at DGW19

                  Meslier
                  Chilwell, Dias*, Matip, Balbuena
                  TC Salah, KDB*, Bruno, Son*
                  DCL*, Bamford

4 SGWers, but they are all okay and this team also looks good from GW20 onwards

I'd FH 18 because the DGW guys in 19 are more core holds I think. Removing Salah, Fernandes etc is quite unappealing for 18.

In an ideal world, you'd be settled with 3 City in BGW18, FH in DGW19 for higher upside and get back your triple City in gw20 for wba.

But it's not an ideal world we live in

3rd City is a luxury and not sure if it's any better than having Salah or Kane. Only want that for GW18 honestly.

What three City would you want? They are all expensive and outside of KDB and perhaps Días they aren't living up to their price tags. Jesus couldn't finish a sentence.

The GW16 players may not be the best for GW 17 and 18. Using the second WC in GW20 is a risk with more Blank and Double Gameweeks down the line.

            So... Regarding chip usage.

I think attacking GW18/19 with chips is going to be the best way to do it for a few reasons.

            1. GW19 is a huge DGW. We'll have 10 teams with DGWs. That's a lot and it also includes some nice 'filler' teams like Southampton, Leeds and West Ham with favorable doubles.

            2. GW19 is also relatively less congested and teams have more to play for. The blank in 18 gives teams extended time off which means that we're less likely to get rotation - better for doubles.

            3. A lot of our teams already contain a lot of the key DGW guys. Salah, Fernandes, Bamford, Chelsea defense. I think it's really advantageous to build towards the double, FH in 18 and BB in 19.

            4. We have more time to plan. We don't know in future when the doubles are going to come. We know now for a fact in 5 weeks time these doubles are coming. This gives us time to slowly morph our team to where it needs to be. That's a nice advantage.

            5. I believe that it's advantageous to bench boost in the biggest DGW and wildcard early afterwards for structural reasons. I believe in a money all on the field strategy which means having a 3.8m 5th defender, a 3.9m non-playing GK and a 4.3m 8th attacker. The bench boost by nature forces you to get playing guys in the 'fodder slots'. So doing it now, focusing on maximizing the BB chip and then wildcarding to a more efficient and streamlined structure helps you get more value in the latter parts of the season.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go this route.

            So in essence:
            GW18: FH
            GW19: BB
            GW20: WC#2

            1. Karan14
              • 8 Years
              3 years, 4 months ago

No way I can BB in 19 with Martinez, Steer, Lamptey, Kilman, Mitchell & Brewster in my team right now.
But it's good strategy if you already have a hald decent looking bench for the double.

But I'm starting to lean towards FH18 and build for GW19.

You can morph it. That's my plan. I'm building out my fodders over the next few weeks carefully so that I'll be ready in time.

I currently still have Forster, Lamptey, Mitchell, Davis. But we still have 5 weeks to make progress towards that. Although granted, my team may be closer than yours. It's team dependent.

Eventually, I'm gonna work towards something that looks like:

                Martinez McCarthy
                Zouma James Coufal Balbuena Dallas
                Salah Fernandes Son Soucek Rashford
                Ings Adams Bamford

It'll be something like this. 13 DGW guys, my 2 singles are Martinez and Son who I intend to keep all season (Martinez because he has 2 more doubles to come, Son because he offers GW16 captain and has shu in 19 so as single GW guys go, is one of the best available).

Interesting plan, thanks for sharing and I’m thinking along similar lines. One thing I’m worried about is using transfers for gw19 and avoiding maximising weeks in the lead up to 19. The likes of Kane from gw16 for example. But then again I could stick with Kane and son for 19 when they have sheff Utd

I'll have to take too many hits honestly. I don't have any Spurs from GW16 onwards and I want atleast one attacker regardless of the blanks/doubles. So essentially I won't be able to use all my transfers for the getting the DGW players anyways. And I would imagine this will also involve selling KDB which I'm not sure about as City also have good GW18 fixture.

It's a good strategy though but it's just doesn't sit well with my team but that squad looks neat for the DGW.
I'll try to use the BB with my 2nd wildcard hopefully.

Yesterday I would have said you would want some City for their good run, but after last night not so sure. But personally I would really like to have Kane from GW15 or 16, so not sure how that would fit with such plan

Yeah the weakness is that I have no Kane in 16. But I would still have Son if I need a Spurs captain.

This (13 dgw players + Son & Martinez) is one of my plan but i don't want to use WC in 20 immediately. Feels that i might need it after QF FAC later (next international break)

It looks nice but If you are left with only BB & FH like me. Would you still go with this approach & play the remaining 18 gws without a chip?

Yes. You're maximizing the return now. But it is team dependent. What do you think is going to happen later on in the season that would make these chips more effective?

The way I see it, you're getting the absolute maximum from both.

You're gonna FH when you have like 10 players out so it's a perfect time for it. And you're gonna bench boost when you have 13 DGW guys. If that's not getting the best out of them, I'm not sure what is. You'll just deal in the coming week smartly. The 2nd wildcard is important - basically, buy City, United, Villa guys because they have doubles stored.

I am not sure I want to ride the remaining 18 gws without a chip but your strategy makes a lot of sense. In the end, it depends on one’s current team & chips left. I’ll hold fire for those gws by spreading the risk, will unleash them chips later.

Let’s see where it takes my team to, hopefully favorable fixtures in other dgws too

You could plan to keep your WC for GW20 if your team is in good shape. I might well do that but the team structure being poor is a bit annoying.

Remaining 19 gws* rather. Yes, that’s also an option, we will see... for now I haven’t decide yet but leaning towards another approach for my team.

                    for me I will just

                    WC GW 17
                    FH GW 18
BB GW 19 All 15 players with two games

from GW 20 will manage with FTs
and will try to maintain rank
if necessary some -4s for upcoming blanks DGW etc

The reason I don't like this, is that your structure is bad after GW19.

You'll have a playing goalkeeper, a full bench and a bench headache with the 8th attacker if you do it this way. This is why I want to WC in 20 not in 17.

yes I aware that and I still feel this is the week I shlould be having 15 DGWers for maximum gain and only way is WC in GW 17..it is team depend since I only have 5 DGWers in my team and it is not possible to bring only DGWers from GW14 to GW 19

it is only 5 ft (GW 18 FH so cant get FT)

I mean, my team that I"m building towards will have 13 DGW players and the singles being Martinez and Son. I think you'd actually be hard-pressed to build a better side for the double even on WC.

It costs me two -4s but considering potential, it should definitely work out.

I don't like that full on plan you have because it cripples you for the rest of the season to not have that 2nd wildcard in your pocket for afterwards.

U don't want to save wildcard for later doubles? You'll have even more value for bench boost then.

How can I get even more value for bench boost then? This is a huge double gameweek. Likely the biggest one of the season. It also screws up my structure to have to get stuff like a 2nd GK, a 5th defender and an 8th attacker.

I'm sorry I'm not understanding your strategy properly. I meant we can accumulate more team value by the gw34-35 doubles. And wouldn't u want ur wildcard for those? I'll probably save my wildcard and bench boost for then. Already have my team set for gw19 so don't wanna make changes to fit in a bench. And I'll do free hit in 18.

What chance of there being two more DGWs after GW19, albeit smaller than 19?

2? no by 34-35 i meant theres a double because of fa cup postponements usually at that time. Only 1 double. I'll wildcard a week before that double and bench boost in that double. I don't want to disrupt my first team right now to try and fit in players just for bench boost.

Ah team value, you mean... Yeah, I suppose you can do it that way as well, build a decent XI for 19, FH in 18 and then continue along with the plan to WC later and BB the week after you WC.

But go back to point #2. This is likely to be the best week for doubles because of the fact teams all have stuff to play for with less congestion. We all triple captained Salah in 24 last year (Mane for me like an idiot...) because they had stuff to play for then as opposed to a GW35 wildcard.

My team is solid for the dgw. I'll have:
                            Meslier
                            James Chilwell Coufal

                            Ings Bamford
I just don't have a bench and don't want to remove anyone from my team to get a bench for bench boost. Personally for me wildcard and bench boost makes sense in later dgw. I'll freehit in 18 and use TC in 19 for Bruno probably or maybe Salah.

Yeah it's team dependent. That is a good team for 19 indeed. But have you considered moving your fodder pieces now?

The only sacrifice you'd have to make is Grealish in GW16 for Soucek to raise money to fix your fodders for a BB in 19. That's how I plan to do it.

Grealish has BUR wba CRY until 15 but after that, he has che mun TOT. Seems like a perfect time to remove Grealish for Soucek for cash to upgrade your bench to bench boost in 19. In fact your team might be even better than mine to do the strategy I intend because you already have Ings...

You don't have to use your wildcard right after. You can save it. Grealish is fine to let go I think. He'll have a run of 3 bad fixtures and no double. You can get Grealish back in later more expensive if need be for someone like KdB who looks like he might be overpriced this season. There are always ways back.

Looks like sensible plan but don't pursue at all cost. Wild carding the week before a bench boost like in other seasons is obviously a lot easier than doing it this way(unforeseen injuries and suspensions will crop up and you might have to change that plan).

                    GW16: WC#1

                    GW19: BB

If using bench boost means you wildcard in 20, DONT use it. Use TC instead and bench boost after your second wildcard.

It's hard to get the value back out of your bench once it's there.

When would be best to use the first wildcard?

If I had 1st Wildcard I would use it in 16. It's a nice time to use it.

Fixture swings away from Villa, Everton and Spurs have nice ones. I'd setup my team to be in good shape for GW19, plan to FH 18 and capitalize on the fact you can get Son + Kane in for 16.

If you still have WC1 available, it surely does not matter how your current team is.

Unless you use your WC2 in GW20, I don't like your strategy because you cannot form a team that will benefit both from GW19 and the rest of the season. And using WC1 at GW16 and WC2 at GW20 sounds a bit odd especially if you are happy with most of your current players.

I don't have WC1 available. But yeah, I think what I'd advise would be different depending on how your team is setup.

I think if I had WC1 I wouldn't BB 19. I'd WC 16 for Son and Kane. FH 18, put out a strong XI for 19 and then proceed with BB and WC2 intact.

I think my team in particular is well setup to do it this way though because of the nature of the players I'm looking to remove. Grealish + DCL out in 16 is natural with the fixture swing and this gives an opportunity to pad up for GW19 BB.

I agree. TC could be an option for GW19 btw.

DCL fixtures are not good but I am reluctant to sell him thinking that he is capable of scoring to any team and bought him at base price. If I need him again I will have to pay much more.
I believe many players in my team are not moveable meaning that I would want them regardless of fixtures hence not much space to manoeuvre. That includes Fernandes, Salah, Son, Bamford, DCL, KDB (don't have him yet), one of Chilwell/James, Martinez. That leaves 3-4 players to transfer in and out only.

Vardy,Ings, in for Kane, Watkins,is all I'm planning on doing other than injuries.

Can anyone explain why the double gameweek this happening at all? I mean, in terms of the original fixture planning, what has actually changed?

When the Premier League fixtures were announced at the start of the season, they put them into 38 Matchweeks, and said that Matchweek 18 would be split between the midweek before Matchweek 19 and the midweek after Matchweek 19, so as to give all teams a free midweek break either before or after the Matchweek 19 weekend.

They did not state at that stage which five would be played in the earlier midweek and which five in the later one, since this would depend on the choices made by the TV companies.

FPL listed all ten matches from Matchweek 18 in GW18 but stated that five of them would actually be moved later to GW19.

GW18 is a short midweek Gameweek containing five of the matches from Matchweek 18; GW19 is a full week, containing the ten matches from Matchweek 19 at the weekend followed by the other five matches from Matchweek 18.

Three matches are still waiting to be rearranged, and these might also be played in GW18 or GW19, although this would mean that the clubs involved in these would not then get their mid-week break.

My team is quite template like others:
                    Martinez 4.0m
                    Robbo* Chilwell* Zouma* Dallas* 4.0m
                    Salah* Bruno* KDB Grealish 4.5m
                    Bamford* DCL Welbeck
                    * are players with DGW, I have 7 for now

                    My strategy is:
From now to GW17: with 4 transfers I can do KDB Grealish DCL Welbeck to Bowen Maddison Ings/Adams Vardy. Depends to form / fixtures / injuries I will decide how to do it.
                    GW18 FH of course
GW19 with 1FT: I will consider BB really worth it (to take multiple hits to upgrade bench fodders then WC GW20) or without BB (leave it as I already have good 11 DWG starters - save WC and BB later in the season).

                      similar to my strategy...
build from now towards DGW 19 - it'll be good to have playing bench over Xmas & New Year fixture congestion
                      GW18 FH
                      GW19 with 1FT:
Consider if BB really worth it
Take hits to upgrade bench fodders or
Save BB (with possible 9 DWG starters) & save BB later in the season
Not planning to use WC after DGW - save for later
with positive covid tests, injuries and too much changing it'll be good to have a playing bench

Atm. my plan is to use ft's to prepare for both 18 and19. Already have Wilson, Lamptey, 2xCity, 2x Aston Villa.

For DGW I Have 2x City, 2x Villa, 3x Leeds, Salah, Adams, Fernandes, James.

Might use BB in GW19 depends on form etc. not sure yet.

                    I'm going FH 18
                    TC 19 (Salah)
Then roll..... my team only needs two transfers for a great starting XI and don't want to dismantle my team for my bench, which would mean I'd have to wildcard in 20

Also, this isn't the only set of blanks, there is wildcard/bench boost options later.

I dont see the benefit of a FH in 18. Pool of players way to small. You still have 5 trsfrs between now and then to cover everyones playing their FH's or WC's

Great insight Camzy into the up and coming 18/19 game weeks.
It maybe a silly question because I've missed something but if game week 18 is a winter break for ten teams when do the other ten teams get their winter break which would also result in another blank game week?

Basically, teams get a full week off at some point that's kinda the best they can do. No more talks of winter breaks after GW19.

If not free hitting in BGW18, how strong will your team be?

                  I can easily get to:

                  Martinez
                  Dias Dier Targett
                  KDB(c) Son Grealish
                  DCL

Take a few hits for BGW, all those teams playing once in DGW. A few more hits to up the doublers for DGW. Leave WC until later, half a season to go.

Playing WC in GW16 so don't need to worry about building a team for BGW/DGW.

I currently have 2 FTs and am not sure what to do, have nothing ITB.

                  Thoughts on:

C good too especially if you don't have chilwell. but I have feeling that he might get rotated with azpi in this busy Christmas period.

ok, spread sheet set up, looked at the players I own now and its not too difficult to navigate 18 & 19 without any chips by setting up my bench with players that play in 18 and being able to get out 10 or 11 in GW18 and six or seven double game week layers in GW19 ... job done 🙂

Sounds good, what will your squad look like in 18....?? I assume you have used your WC ??

WC used yes, depending on transfers it will not look too different to what I have now, but Kane & a cheap mid will come in for Bamford & Salah/Bruno by the time of the bank 18, plus Romeu & Kilman will be moved out and blank starters (maybe McCarthy too) will replace them, and two transfers in GW19 to bring Bamford & Salah/Bruno back plus a hit maybe for one other for GW19

                      Current
                      Meslier
                      Chilwell, Cresswell, Regulion
                      Salah, Bruno, Son, KDB
                      Bamford, Welbeck, DCL
                      McCarthy, Targett, Romeu, Kilman

Need to work it through, but I would keep Son, KDB, Kane, DCL in the double anyway and have Chilwell, Cresswell,, Salah, Bruno, Bamford etc

Bilic due to be sacked apparently. May as well have thrown that game last night and let us all have our KDB points.

If I were a WBA fan and you'd said after 12 games you are 1 win away from getting out of the relegation zone...
                    I'd of taken that.

If both Villa and NUFC go out of the cup in the 3rd round I can see that fixture being added to GW 19, these fixtures could all be result dependent on who gets knocked out of which competition and when.

The way this season is going, there is a clear optimal strategy for navigating the blanks and doubles:

Morning all! Sorry bit of a boring one but could do with some advice for next GW. Not sure what to do with this lot:

                    Squad: 2FT 0.0ITB
                    Mcarthy
                    Chilwell Cresswell Lamptey
                    KDB Salah Bruno Grealish
                    Giroud Bam Ings

                    Forster / Bissouma / Kilman / Neco

Any thoughts and advice would be really helpful thanks.

So difficult to decide who to move out for Kane - KDB or Vardy. All boils to picking one of these two options:

                    A) KDB + Mitchell + Davis ( Mitchell and Davis perma bench in a 4 4 2)
                    B) Podence + Taylor + Vardy (Podence 4th mid in a 3 4 3, Taylor rotating based om fixtures)

So what are we doing around February Marxh when there will be a new BGW because of FA Cup and then a DGW around April/ May again because of FA Cup?
This season is definitely going a new way.

Cross that bridge when we come to it I suppose, my team personally is well set up for the dgw 19 so I’ll strengthen it even more and then play free hit in 18. I’m so far down the ranks and behind in my ml I don’t really like the thought of waiting in case something better comes a long (not guaranteed)
