Crystal Palace 0-7 Liverpool

  • Goals: Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) x2, Takumi Minamino (£6.0m), Sadio Mané (£11.9m), Jordan Henderson (£5.4m), Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) x2
  • Assists: Firmino, Mané, Andy Robertson (£7.2m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Salah, Joel Matip (£5.4m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.3m)
  • Bonus Points: Firmino x3, Salah x2, Robertson x1

A ruthless Liverpool demolished Crystal Palace as Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) needed only 33 minutes to rack up a match-leading 16 points.

The midfielder’s 38.4% ownership must have feared the worst when their man was benched by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp for the Selhurst Park encounter.

Those fears proved unfounded, however, as Salah replaced Sadio Mané (£11.9m) after 57 minutes, provided an assist 11 minutes later and then scored twice in quick succession in the last few minutes.

Finishing School

Making a strong case for fact of the day was Palace keeper Vicente Guaita (£4.9m) not making a single save. Yep, Liverpool scored from all seven of their shots on target and the home stopper could do nothing about any of them.

Maximum bonus and the joint top score overall went to the in-form Roberto Firmino (£9.2m), who mirrored Salah’s output from a rather more taxing 74 minutes of pitch-time.

The Brazilian also scored last time out– for the first time in four Gameweeks – and is attracting early buyers for Liverpool’s home game against West Brom on December 27th.

Mané hadn’t found the net since Gameweek 5, but scored and assisted in a lively display, while Takumi Minamino (£6.0m) was preferred to Salah and took his chance with a smart finish to open the scoring.

Klopp was generous in his praise of the Japan international.

“First and foremost, we want to use Taki, so that’s it. He played a top game today, nice finish and he just is in a good moment.” – Jurgen Klopp

But good moment or not, he’s unlikely to dent the playing time of the side’s vaunted front three in the short term, based on Klopp’s comments about his team’s schedule.

“For the first time now in what feels like ages we don’t play Tuesday again. Now we have more time to recover than we ever had before in this season.” – Jurgen Klopp

Salah benched as Matip returns for Liverpool's Palace visit

As for Salah’s benching, Klopp’s reasoning was predictable enough.

“We played Sunday-Wednesday, so we needed fresh legs today. Mo played the last four games, so a massively intense period. So it was clear it will be him.” – Jurgen Klopp

A (sort of) rested Salah, and Firmino and Mané among the goals, is highly likely to mean all three start Gameweek 15, especially as Saturday’s starters were both hooked relatively early.

But the Egyptian remains the most risky not to have in your side seeing he’s now blanked only twice in 12 appearances, one of many reasons why he’s currently Gameweek 15’s most popular purchase.

Normal Service Resuming

Liverpool’s defence has not been wholly convincing this season, not helped by injuries to key personnel.

But Saturday’s clean sheet was a second in four Gameweeks and although Palace threatened consistently throughout a generally good first half display, none of Alisson‘s (£5.9m) three saves were anything more than routine.

Joel Matip (£5.4m) returned, bumped up his score with an assist and should keep his place against West Brom considering the relatively generous recovery time on offer for one who frequently struggles to play twice in a week.

But Fantasy eyes are now firmly trained on more familiar stars – full-backs Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m).

Both assisted – in the latter’s case for only the second time this season – and Robertson just out-scored his team-mate thanks to a single bonus point.

With Newcastle to follow the West Brom game, investment in the Liverpool back line looks increasingly tempting, if expensive when it comes to the full-backs.

Porous Palace

Fair play to home manager Roy Hodgson, who refused to drop a ‘bad day at the office’ cliché into his post-match assessment.

“There were times when we tried to take the game and the match to them as best we could and there were periods in the game that we did. But to go a goal down so early definitely doesn’t help things.” – Roy Hodgson

Going seven down late on didn’t help either, but whatever Palace are this season, defensively tight is not one of them.

Their one and only clean sheet of the campaign came in Gameweek 1 and they now have the second leakiest back line in the league thanks to Saturday’s seven-goal deluge.

A slice of Boxing Day redemption will need to come away at Aston Villa, and will probably involve the in-form Christian Benteke (£5.5m), who sat out the Liverpool debacle through suspension.

His replacement up front, Jordan Ayew (£5.7m), had a poor match, missing his side’s one big chance and making a real mess of a cut-back that would have gifted Wilfried Zaha (£7.5m) a tap-in.

The latter will surely be hoping to renew his partnership with Benteke as they’ve produced five goals and an assist between them over their last three starts together.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Van Aanholt, Cahill, Kouyate (Tomkins 63), Clyne; Eze (Batshuayi 69), McArthur (Riedewald 75), Milivojevic, Schlupp; Zaha, Ayew.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Fabinho, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Keita, Wijnaldum (Jones 69), Henderson; Mané (Salah 57), Firmino (Oxlade-Chamberlain 75), Minamino.

Lessons learned from FPL Gameweek 14

Still a chance he plays so not banking that 9 pointer just yet. Little annoyed I didn't bench him for Dias in the first place like I was considering but a James haul + Dias 2/1 pointer was also likely

Morning all. Need a bit of advice with getting a Spurs asset in

    Team is:

    McCarthy
    Chillwell Dias vestergaard
    Salah Grealish KDB Bruno Soucek
    Watkins Bamford

    Bench: Coufal Kilman Davis

    A) Watkins + Grealish > DCL + Son
    B)Watkins + Chillwell> Kane + Dier
    C) Watkins + Grealish + Chillwell > Adams + Son + Robbo (-4)
    D) Watkins + Soucek > DCL + Son

A,B and C leave money itb for upgrading kilman, D leaves 0.

Head says Kane is the one to have for this run, but after watching Liverpool having Robbo/Trent seems very appealing for their run. Any advice appreciated

Brighton 5th best for xGA in the last 5 GWs, 4th best all season. Defense looks very good on these numbers but held back by the English Kepa. Now that he's gone, hopefully a Lamptey CS+return+BPS haul will occur today

For those with a GW19 FH plan, how do you guys see your FH team shaping up? I plan to go big at the back as the premium defenders have good fixtures and probably higher point ceiling than the mid range mids.
TAA Robbo double up with Cresswell and Chillwell does have a case. Possibly James if fit in there too.

Not a case of Overthinking. If you learnt that Salah was benched and you still captained him then something is not right with you.

    2. thegaffer82
      • 14 Years

It had nothing to do with overthinking to be fair.

We heard Salah would be rested, and he was. No way to predict Salah would get 40mins game time. And, hard to know he would score 2 goals and get an assist in that time.

Only with hindsight can you regret that move

I guess people who don't spend their time on here or just casually permacaptain Salah are the real winners. I'm just pissed off at Klopp for playing Salah 90 minutes in Denmark to rest him yesterday.

Even if you knew he would get 40 minutes, someone who would get 90 (Kane/KDB/Bruno) was always a better choice

I think there is a case to say that he would either not be used at all, used when they needed something or used when the game was won. And generally I think more information is not always helpful here. However in a week like this with solid other alternatives - Who lest we forget have not actually played yet - Changing would’ve been the right move.

    Arsenal's results based on xG

    GW11: Spurs 0.39 - 0.69 Arsenal
    GW12: Arsenal 1.85 - 0.82 Burnley
    GW13: Arsenal 0.66 - 1.11 Southampton
    GW14: Everton 0.66 - 1.25 Arsenal

They had xG higher than their opponent in three games over that period and lost all three.

Couldn't finish when they had chances in the first half. Ayew was bang average. Zaha searching for sympathy from the ref for most of the game. Defensively they gave Pool too much space and threw in the towel at 4-0. Pool were just so clinical as well. Ruthless.

I’ll be working with what I’ve got for 19 after a free hit for 18. Players in my squad who have a double so far:

      Meslier
      TAA
      Chilwell
      Coufal
      Taylor
      Salah
      Bowen
      Bamford

Likely moves to get to 11 are 3 of Kane, KDB, Watkins & Bissouma/Grealish out for Werner (feel like that’s a trap but high potential upside!), Mane, Adams & Raphinha/Klich.

Working towards FH GW18 & TC GW19 but looking at this week’s fixtures I’m tempted to play by bench boost. It’s an appealing set of fixtures and not sure I’ll have as good a round - would have to take too many hits to get to a bench boost for GW19 and my next wildcard would probably maximise bench fodder.

Worth doing this week? Transfer I’m weighing up is Adams in for Watkins, will decide after the Villa-WBA game.

    Martinez (CRY) Meslier (BUR)
Dias (NEW) TAA (WBA) Chilwell (ars) Coufal (BHA) Taylor (lee)
KDB (NEW) Salah (WBA) Grealish (CRY) Bowen (BHA) Bissouma (whu)
Kane (wol) Watkins (CRY) Bamford (BUR)

        • 10 Years

Yeah there’s not much between Watkins & Adams but Adams is for the double gameweek.

A bench boost in the DGW is only better if the players on my bench have 2 fixtures. Unless I take a few hits and disrupt my team for that week then I’m only going to have players with one fixture on the bench, and might be a similar story with a DGW down the line.

    TAA Chilwell Cresswell

One of my ML leaders has taken 11 hits so far and sits at 50k. However he has also used his FH and WC, I'm 52 behind him at the moment but a hit almost every week and it seems to pay off all the time. Seems mental to me. Maybe I'm too cautious sometimes.

Benching Dias-type decisions probably not helping your cause much either.

No but didnt foresee Saints not scoring with the form theyve been in. Could have just as likely been a 2 pointer

I don't think you buy Dias and then worry about fixtures.

Funny you should say this, I had six red arrows in a row, was down to 1.5m and 100 points behind in my mini leagues, I basically have up, I never take hits but took a -12 for the team I wanted a couple of weeks ago, I'm now 800k and 70 points behind. I would say I'm definitely too cautious and will be taking more hits from now on

With the way this season is and the points so spread out I think I'll be more inclined to take a hit than not.

Yes. Such a good idea at the time. I wildcarded to get him in! Good fixtures upcoming though, could still work out.

If I go Kane-less, I can get this BB team for the DGW. (No second GK but don't see this as much of an issue).

    Thoughts?

    McCarthy
    Robbo - TAA - Chilwell - Cresswell - Dallas
    Salah - Bruno - Son - JWP - Soucek
    DCL - Bamford - Adams

Would involve a -4. Could be zero hits if I play Martinez instead of getting McCarthy.

Probably save the transfer and hit for Martinez, home v Spurs. McCarthy for - 4, away to Leeds and Leicester. Not much in it but 1 less transfer.

I think the hit could pay off if done in advance of the DGW bearing in mind Villa's upcoming fixtures.

Transferred salah to bruno 5 min before deadline due to reading that he's not starting and also didn't know what to do with 2FT. Thankfully only 6k OR drop. First time Bruno owner so expecting a blank.

No blank but I'm interested to see if an improvement from other United attacking options will impact Bruno's points.

folks, help me choose between these options.
the considerations are for DGW19 but without sacrificing too much of BGW18, because for now I tend to choose not to use chips. also a little bit of long term consideration.

    1. Kane, Chilwell, coufal, Cavaleiro, bowen
    2. Son, Chilwell, Creswell,Watkins, bowen
    3. Son, Robbo, creswell, watkins, soucek/cavaleiro
    4. Kane, Robbo, Coufal, 2 of Soucek/cavaleiro/Klich

    my team right now:
    Martinez/button
    Chilwell/Lamptey/Dallas/Bednarek/3.9
    Salah/KDB/Bruno/Grealish/ASM
    DCL/Bamford/Watkins

    or any other suggestion?

      4 with Soucek

Is it worth having Soucek over Anguissa just for one week for the BB in DGW19?
After DGW19 I would anyway want to free up funds and might be using a transfer on Soucek to Anguissa as I don't need Soucek besides the BB... so does it make sense to just get Anguissa instead despite his low ceiling?

Consider Armatey or Burke for 4.3m? Prob no ceiling rather than low ceiling but you'll only get snared for a sub if you don't have a playing 4th defender.

Anyone not planning to FH in 18 or 19? Thinking of Triple (c) but want to save my FH chip

Aim to field a 8/9 for 18 then then have a decent enough 11 for 19

I’m going FH in 18 and bench boost in 19. This is biggest double so makes sense to attack it but can see the appeal in saving the FH if you can get main spurs and city players

FH18. Can hopefully get better players for 17,19,20 and not be a bit restricted to ten teams. Have scope, though unlikely, to use a chip in GW19. Main thing is to get through to 20 hopefully not needing to WC soon afterwards.

Currently have Adams Bamford and Brewster but planning for gw19, who would you upgrade Brewster to for the double? Want someone playing twice. I had planned on Vardy but thinking of getting robbo and taa instead. Slim pickings, Antonio if fit, giroud, anyone else?
