Bale offering differential potential between now and end of FPL season

Gameweek 34 is almost upon us which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and Newcastle United who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

Gareth Bale

  • FPL ownership: 3.1%
  • Price: £9.1m
  • GW34-38 fixtures: SHU | lee | WOL | AVL | lei

After a benching in José Mourinho’s last four games in charge, Gareth Bale (£9.1m) returned to Tottenham Hotspur’s starting XI against Southampton in Gameweek 32, their first match under interim head coach Ryan Mason.

The Welshman responded by grabbing the equaliser, and in the second half, emerged as Spurs’ main attacking threat and creator in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

In just his seventh Premier League start of the campaign, the 31-year-old was named man of the match, and despite a slightly chaotic performance from Mason’s side, they did improve as the game went on, especially after the hour mark when they became more proactive in their approach. If that theme continues, and they look to dominate the ball and play on the front foot in the coming weeks, it bodes well for owners of their attacking assets.

When given a run of games this season, Bale has thrived. He was in exceptional form as he came off the bench against West Ham United in Gameweek 25, and was then handed starts against Burnley, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Arsenal. During that time, he scored four goals, provided two assists and 40 FPL points, highlighting his ability to hit big hauls.

Although he was benched for last weekend’s EFL Cup final loss to Manchester City, I fancy him to start against Sheffield United on Sunday, in a game when the onus will be on the Lilywhites to take the initiative and attack. In addition to that match, Spurs then take on Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, before finishing the season with a trip to Leicester City.

Bale is perhaps no longer the player he was at the peak of his powers, but is still a real threat in the final-third, and with a manager who now believes in him, is an intriguing differential for the remainder of the season.

Diego Llorente

  • FPL ownership: 0.2%
  • Price: £4.4m
  • GW34-38 fixtures: bha | TOT | bur | sou | WBA

Diego Llorente (£4.4m) struggled with injuries throughout the first few months of his Leeds United career, but has now played every minute of the last nine games and shown real quality.

His role at the heart of the Whites’ defence has helped tighten them up, with just four goals conceded in their last six matches, despite a testing schedule which has included games against Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Spanish defender’s aggressive style, along with his passing range and ability to bring the ball out from the back makes him an exciting watch, and lends itself to bonus points, too. As pointed out by Neale in his superb Big Numbers article, Llorente has registered 140 baseline bonus points (BBPS) since his return from injury in the second half of Double Gameweek 25, more than any other defender.

And while Pascal Struijk (£4.0m) is currently the cheapest route into Marcelo Bielsa’s backline, his spot in the starting XI is perhaps a little less secure, with Liam Cooper (£4.3m) due to return from suspension after Gameweek 34, and Robin Koch (£4.3m) pushing for a recall too.

Leeds now face a Brighton and Hove Albion side who have struggled in attack in recent matches, scoring only once in their last four outings. Encouragingly, for those considering investing, their meeting with the Seagulls marks a favourable run too, with games against Burnley, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion to follow.

Llorente is an integral part of an improving Leeds defence, and while Stuart Dallas (£5.3m) remains the headline pick, the former Real Sociedad man is worth a look if funds are tight.

Allan Saint-Maximin

  • FPL ownership: 2.7%
  • Price: £5.1m
  • GW34-38 fixtures: ARS | lei | MCI | SHU | ful

Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.1m) has shown his value in recent weeks, playing an important role in Newcastle United’s revival.

The Magpies’ are now unbeaten in their last four matches, which has coincided with the return of the Frenchman and a change in formation.

Now deployed in a 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 shape, the new system has shown plenty of attacking intent. In fact, since Gameweek 30, they rank joint-second for goals, first for expected goals (xG) and fourth for shots in the box. Granted, it’s a small sample size from which to draw conclusions from, but it is encouraging.

During that run, Saint-Maximin has provided two assists, scored one himself, and has been one of Newcastle’s best players.

At Anfield last week, Liverpool couldn’t handle him, as he consistently exploited their high line with passes in behind. And while he didn’t manage to involve himself in any goals, it was a hugely impressive performance, and bodes well for future weeks.

Next up for Steve Bruce’s side is a Gameweek 34 encounter with Arsenal, and with the game sandwiched between the Gunners’ Europa League semi-finals, they won’t get a better chance to win. After that things get trickier, but they do finish the season with games against relegated Sheffield United and Fulham.

Saint-Maximin has stepped up just at the right time for Newcastle, and at just £5.1m, could be a useful budget asset for the run-in.

2FTs. Wanting to do Vardy >> Kane(C). Which move is best to raise 0.3? Still got BB.

    A. Gundog >> ASM / Saka / Raphinha*
    B. Coady >> Llorente / Alioski / Coufal

Why do so many not realise the social media blackout is also to pressure the social media platforms to do something.

    - No social media posts
    - People moaning about no social media posts
    - People frantically look into why there's no social media posts
    - "Oh players are receiving tons of abuse?"
    - "What can be done to stop this, to get out social media back?"
    - To social media platforms: WTF, why aren't you helping stop this?

People will get annoyed for a short weekend, and it'll return to the norm after - but the effect it social media (and the various touchpoints from there) will be felt & remembered. Companies won't like those effects & the next step is how do we stop that happening again?

You can ban individuals, but that's a ineffective approach. You go for the platforms to do something.

Whilst I don't disagree, many clubs & companies will have degrees of partnership with those platforms. A group of users complain about stuff is more easily ignored. Corporations with contracts, money & deals are the ones they listen to.

There's no solution to online abuse, it's been there since the dawn of the internet. Also there's billions of users on social media companies, the CEOs won't even notice this is happening. Online abuse will never go anywhere, you gotta be out of touch to think it will be stopped.

Well actually I am comparing the opinion of a white guy (me) to another white guy (you) & questioning why you think it's fine to just leave alone abuse, of which so much of it is racist.

We both do not receive that type of abuse and it is so, so prevalent & categorically defined as abuse. I'd like to know why you think it is something that can be brushed under the carpet actually.

There may not be a "solution" to abuse, but there are lots of ways to mitigate, reduce it, and hold people accountable.
Increased regulation of social media is both possible and desirable. No reason at all why the internet has to be a wild west free for all.
Ensuring that social media companies are treated as publishers and are responsible for what they publish would be a good way to start.
Accepting online abuse as inevitable is a failure to see what is possible.

Give me a solution then. Censorship doesn't work, it's never worked on the internet, there's always a work around. There's infitie ways to abuse someone online.

I'm not dodging anything. I've responded to this on earlier posts on this topic before.

My suggestion, one of many that could possibly happen would to have preventative measures. There are options out there for example that can identify & flag abusive language. Even a Year 1 CompSci student knows what a natural language parser is. There is without doubt some very clever software out there than can flag certain language (etc). A preventitive measure could be to apply these technologies to the social media platforms.

It does not infringe on your rights. They already capture your data. But it can block out particular messages. Social media companies also have the PERFECT data set to do this.

It is expensive and difficult to implement, therein lies the resistance. There needs to be a reason for them to do this.

Alternatives on the punishment scale are things such as IP bans. Obviously VPNs are an issue but I won't preach about that side of things I'm not as knowledgeable about.

Filters exist on almost every site, there's millions of different ways to spell a word with a keyboard. Look at twitch text to speech, they desperately failed on many attempts to prevent racist messages appearing on live streams.

And yeah, IP bans do nothing, almost everyone has a dynamic IP.

If you want solutions, banning people with your kind of attitude would be a start.
Is it a perfect solution? No.
But less nonsense from the likes of you who are part of the problem.

There is a massive difference between chat filters to that of a managed language parser & one which brings in (what would need to be advanced) sentiment analysis.

For the record, I do not actually like the Digital ID route. IMO it is like trading one right for another right. You can do a lot without having an ID to link to. The emphasis should always be on prevention first, punishment later.

I did give you a suggestion as to how I would like to see it approached - more regulation of social media companies to shift the focus of responsibility onto them rather than individuals, starting with recognising in law that social media companies are publishers in the same way as traditional media. At the moment, the vile behaviour of individuals on social media is not the companies problem. Make it their problem.

Let's use a physical example. An abuser, say with a knife, wants to go and physically abuse someone. They use public transport to get there and do it.

Is it the transport providers fault for providing that transport service for anyone? No - if you are caught with that weapon, would you stopped, or referred by them to a entity that could punish them? Yes.

What checks are done on the weapon itself? Well you have laws on who is allowed to buy those & can be denied sale.

Social media is the knife in this instance. There are things you can do to prevent use by people who should not be doing this.

Okay, I like the example, it makes sense, now give me a solution to prevent the abuser using a knife? It seems like we have a ban on knives in public in the UK and it isn't working?

You cannot stop everything. You can put in preventative measure like what I've mentioned, We don't ban the sale of knives, but we do for guns. There is obviously a need for sense depending on the scale of this issue. Convert that to our online example.

But what to we do to people that have say, stabbed someone people (i.e. abused someone online before). They get punished. They get put in prison. For online abuse, there can be similar punishment. Scalable for the effect it has, but way more than what is done now.

Just because it is online does not mean it is not abuse.

Yes. Obviously it needs to be approached from multiple angles, but when your company ends up being the platform others voice through - not only is it in your interest to at least make sure some of that stuff is not abusive, for example, but they are enabling this sort of behavior so 100% should be involved in rooting it out.

I don't think I even saw those comments. I genuinely believe the majority of people think it will be pointless because it lasts only a weekend & has no tangible change post-this weekend. The bigger picture is ignored.

A weekend, week or month will make no difference.
A full pull indefinitely possibly could force the companies to do something.

Joint-effort. We already have laws on what abuse is & is punishable by. Just because it is online does not mean it is free game lol.

so if someone calls me an idiot online, can I claim it is damaging and derogatory and a form of abuse?

I can call you an idiot in real life and that is not abuse. If start making threatening racial remarks at you in person, that is abuse. If I gang up on you with multiple people and abuse you verbally, that is a form of intimidation and harassments which is also punishable by law.

Do you see where I am going with the examples I have given you?

            1. ElChapo
              • 5 Years

I can see where you're trying to go with it yes.

What if I believed that your insult of "idiot" was gravely demeaning and caused me alarm and distress, I would be within my rights to say you have abused me.

I think you calling me an idiot is abuse, you are not the person to determine whether it is or not. If that's the case then anyone who is accused of racial abuse could just say "it is not abuse, I do not believe it is"

Well you are talking about entering what would become a grey area & the sort of thing someone would try to defend in court. A one-off, off-the-cuff remark of 'idiot' would not hold up in court or law. It is not a -grossly- abusive word, nor has connotations as things like racial, sexual or violent abusive terms have.

Abuse, by law, does not have to be "grossly" abusive, the victim would have to display evidence that the perceived abuse has caused them evident distress and alarm.

which law would you like changing.

There are already laws in the UK for discrimination and hate speech based on gender, race or sexual orientation, and i have seen many articles in the news of UK nationals being arrested and charged for these incidents in the past 6 months.

I did not actually even suggest any laws needed changing if you read what I've commented. As you have said, laws for this sort of stuff already exist. Communications Act 2003 etc. They just are not enforced.

The argument this blackout is making, is that not enough is done by entities such as social media platforms, to actually enforce these laws.

you're saying a joint effort of law makers and platforms should determine what is defined as abuse.

Which law makers? American? British? French? your suggestion very very quickly becomes unenforceable.

    Hey all,

Mark Sutherns and I recorded FPL BlackBox Episode 32 – Sliding Doors – last night and there's lots of ways you can watch / listen if you missed it.

The idea of FPL BlackBox is to reflect back on the mistakes we make during the season to try and become better managers.

I'm at a stage in the season where its unlikely I'll catch my ML leader (80 points off) unless I start being aggressive. Was thinking of Bruno, DCL, Stones > Harrison, Kane, Castagne for a -8 while bench boosting... Madness after United's display last night? Rest of the squad looks like this:

    Mendy | Martinez

    Rudiger | Maguire | Dallas | Cancelo | Stones*

    Salah | Fernandes* | Soucek | Jota | Son

    DCL* | Watkins | Iheanacho
