Having been through the best goalkeepers and defenders to consider ahead of the post-Gameweek 3 Overhaul, we move on to midfielders in our position-by-position Sky Fantasy Football player analysis.

If you’re new to the game, check out our introductory video guide below.

And don’t forget to catch up on Niall Murphy’s team reveal and top tips, which is the first of the four-time top 50 finisher’s articles for Fantasy Football Scout this season.

PREMIUM MIDFIELDERS

Bruno Fernandes (£11.8m) racked up a humongous 270 points last season and was streets ahead of the next highest-scoring midfield asset. One of the standout captaincy options on matchday 2 of Gameweek 2 and Gameweek 3, it’s no wonder the Man Utd midfielder is already in 40% of squads.

For those looking to save a bit of money on the popular Fernandes, his team-mate Jadon Sancho has come in at £10.3m – but the Portuguese schemer’s shot bonus accumulation and man of the match magnetism means that the newly arrived winger has a lot to do to convince us to look elsewhere at Old Trafford.

Unlike in FPL, the likes of Mohamed Salah (£11.9m) and Son Heung-min (£10.8m) are classed as forwards – so there isn’t a great deal of competition for Fernandes in the premium midfielder pond, and the fact that he outscored anyone else in his position by 75 points in 2020/21 was telling.

Along with Fernandes and Sancho, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) is the only other midfielder priced above £10.0m.

The Belgian sits in 26% of teams despite it being unclear whether or not he is fully fit, having torn ankle ligaments at EURO 2020. Manchester City are yet to offer any update on his availability but he was sighted in team training on Monday, raising hopes of a Gameweek 1 appearance.

De Bruyne will supplement offensive returns with passing and shot bonus providing he makes it onto the grass but Riyad Mahrez (£9.8m), who has a full pre-season under his belt, is one attack-minded, short-term option who looks assured of game-time before the Overhaul.

MID-PRICE AND BUDGET MIDFIELDERS

The uncertainty surrounding the future of Jack Grealish (£9.0m) could lead many to his current team-mate, Emi Buendia (£7.9m). The ex-Norwich man racked up 15 goals and 16 assists in the Championship last season. When sorted by attack, Aston Villa sit top of our Season Ticker for the opening three Gameweeks.

He’ll pick up the odd bonus point, too, with his tackling surprisingly a strong suit when he was last in the Premier League with Norwich City.

Youri Tielemans (£8.7m) is an armband contender for those seeking to captain a Leicester asset on matchday 3 of Gameweek 2. Over the last campaign the midfielder totalled six goals, four assists and 50 bonus points. His team-mate Wilfred Ndidi (£7.5m) offers a cut-price route into the Foxes’ midfield. He lacks Tielemans’ attacking threat but picked up 45 bonus points last season, with his love of a tackle and Brendan Rodgers’ possession-based football making him considerably more attractive in Sky than he is in FPL.

A player in a similar Sky mould to Ndidi is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£8.1m). The Spurs man racked up 83 bonus points last season, which included hitting tier 2 passes 14 times. But a change in manager and an opening fixture against Manchester City does temper enthusiasm for the Dane.

Man City’s fixtures don’t particularly appeal but the bonus potential of Rodri (£8.7m) is hard to ignore. In 31 starts the metronomic Spaniard hit tier 2 passing on 23 occasions, with no midfielder in the game managing a higher total.

City’s defensive midfielders are routinely towards the top of the bonus standings in Sky Fantasy, so the imminent return of Rodri to training is one to monitor. If the Spain international isn’t fit for whatever reason, then Fernandinho (£7.9m) could mop up the passing and tackle bonus in the reigning champions’ opening encounters.

Thiago Alcantara (£8.3m), another footnote in FPL, had one of the best minutes-per-bonus rates among Sky midfielders last season, so is also a name to consider for Liverpool’s favourable early run of games.

And remember, these picks are not necessarily long-term holds, with the Overhaul offering managers the chance to quickly offload any early-season punts.

After a difficult opener away to Manchester United, Raphinha could have greater joy against Everton (H) and Burnley (a). The £8.3m man managed six goals and nine assists in his debut Premier League season.

Jarrod Bowen (£8.2m) offers a potential route into the West Ham attack for those not picking Michail Antonio (£8.8m) or looking to double up on an attractive run of fixtures. The winger has shone in pre-season and hit eight goals and logged five assists in 2020/21, with pitch time perhaps more guaranteed if Jesse Lingard (£8.2m) doesn’t make the move to London.

Bowen and Raphinha tend to rely attacking returns rather than bonus for their Sky tallies but a mid-price midfielder who combines both is James Ward-Prowse (£8.6m).

The England international is currently nursing a knee issue but if fit for Gameweek 1, he is a consistent option and was behind only Fernandes among Sky midfielders last season. He scored eight times in 2020/21 and supplied seven assists, while hitting 58 bonus points.

Allan Saint-Maximin (£7.9m) could be worth a punt for Newcastle United’s opening three games. He looks set to be an out-of-position option in Sky, having been reclassified as a forward in FPL due to his stint as second striker. Saint-Maximin did miss Newcastle’s most recent friendlies through illness, which is one to keep an eye on for any investors.

Ismaila Sarr (£7.8m) could potentially be on penalties for Watford, though that’s only likely to happen if Troy Deeney is not on the pitch. He scored 13 times for the Hornets in the Championship, along with providing four assists. Sarr racked up 86 goal attempts and 57 shots in the box over the season.

Smith-Rowe tops the GW35 points table as Tuchel laments his own rotation

If you seek to captain an Arsenal player on matchday 1 of Gameweek 1, Emile Smith Rowe (£7.5m) may do the trick. Having signed a new contract recently, the Gunners’ no 10 plans to get on the goal trail this season.

On the other side of that Arsenal-Brentford equation is Bryan Mbuemo (£7.2m). As with Saint-Maximin, the Brentford winger could end up playing up top as part of a front two if Thomas Frank opts for a wing-back system.

Down in the budget bracket, Nathan Tella (£6.5m) may appeal if we get information that the Southampton starlet could earn a starting XI spot in Gameweek 1.

Overall, though, many Sky managers will be starting with just three midfielders considering the dearth of selection options compared to those in defence and attack.

I'm not convinced with Martinez at 5.5, having the extra money ITB could be useful if/when Kane/Grealish moves materialise. Otherwise looks good

Just depends when you want to Wildcard, I'd say only pick Martinez if you plan to stick with him for the duration, always a hassle wasting a transfer for a keeper

I'm leaning towards moving Martinez to Pickford. Still can't say I trust Everton but he'll get some save points and Martinez' fixtures after GW3 are not great for a while, and even after that in their next best patch it only lasts about 3-4 games before getting bad again. Meanwhile I'd probably be happy to play Pickford in 10 of the first 11 gameweeks

"United are hopeful of having Wan-Bissaka available for the start of the season sources have told

. The defender is carrying an injury, and although he is taking part in the preseason training camp at St. Andrews, he is working on an individual programme. #MUFC"

The plot thickens. Slight question marks over Shaw still lingering, as well as the late return of players to the squad. Starting to wonder if I ought to not start with an MU defender

Get your point. Can go Bruno Jota instead and then reassess Jota after 2 weeks.
United probably wont have a preseason game. Shaw AWB Rashford out plus a couple of others coming late just not convinced by them to start with.
Son has had a good preseason on the other hand. Things could change.

        Cheers mate!

Not sure having your first 2 transfers planned is the best situation to be in, I understand it but it's likely something else will crop up to muddy the waters a bit if you end up looking to go the second route.

Completely agree. But on the other hand these one week punts could pay big time. I mean Havertz at home to a newly formed Palace defence could do well.

        Cheers mate.

Good point. From GW3-9 Liverpool have only 3 good fixtures from a cs perspective.
They play City Chelsea Leeds and United during this period.
Shaw Digne on the other hand has a much better run during this period. I get Firpo who is quite good for offensive returns along with the fixtures as well.
        Its not un-doable

Now Lamptey is out for the start of the season, are people doing a straight swap to either Veltman or Webster? or are they just having Sanchez for Brighton defense and going with another 4.5 option from another side to not double up?

The other thing to consider with Benrahma is his ceiling.

He may not start games but he can still come on and do damage.

I like JWPs security of starts, but the truth is I could get 90mins of JWP and get 2 points, yet I could get 15 mins of Benrahma off the bench and get 6+ points.

It all depends on how mu h of a risk you're willing to take.

I actually have JWP in my team at the moment.

If he's fit to start the season I may well keep him. Their early fixtures aren't great but Southampton are a funny old team. They could well surprise a few people and JWP is fairly reliable. Nailed on with set pieces.

I keep switching between him and Benrahma, but JWP is more secure for starts right now. You can set and forget.

Yes, but bad teams still score against good teams even when they get beaten by them. People sometimes forget this in FPL

You don't need to be smashing everyone 4-0 every week to get points in FPL.

Sometimes it's those difficult fixtures that you bench guys like JWP in that they end up getting returns in.

JWP is great value but only really if Ings is out IMO. Plus there are questions over his fitness at the minute. He also might go to Villa though which would make him nearly essential for me if Grealish goes

He's good value even with Ings.

If he goes to Villa I'd definitely be looking at Tella who should get increased game time.

Saints could be a decent source for good budget points this season.

If Cavani is nailed he could be FPL gold and a genuine alternative to Bruno, freeing funds for Son or Kane.

Sancho is the key, I can see Cavani absolutely thriving on his service, just like Haaland did at Dortmund.

Harry Kane’s planning to return to training with Tottenham later this week. The situation regarding his future is still unresolved - to be discussed with the club

Harry will be back soon. Spurs were aware of his desire to try a new challenge, and to play UCL football.

Another Portuguese coach for Dier who speaks Portuguese having grown up in Lisbon. Could form a good relationship with Nuno who won't have near as many lusophone players as he did at Wolves.

I know Toney is more or less template, but I really don't feel strongly about him. I could totally be wrong though.

The £6.5 FWD I will be keeping a close eye on is Rodrigo. Feel like him and Bam will share more minutes this season. Definitely not worth the risk of starting with him though. A wait and see.

I like Rodrigo as well, may even start with him if he plays a bit more and the manager talks up his chances of starting right before kick off. Other than Toney there’s not many 6.5’s out there, not sure about ASM and Fabio Silva seems even more of a wait and see but could also be good at some point

Yes his minutes could be an issue but it looks the best time to get him (minutes related atleast). The Champions League won't start for a bit and the defences he is up against are not brilliant. He's a fun pick.

Impossible to be sure - if Martial is properly fit again he’s an absolute beast, so is Cavani

Utd have some scary attacking options all of a sudden, even with Rashford injured

One of these days Greenwood is going to eviscerate some poor team as well

And the sky’s the limit for Sancho

So many goals coming up this year - and so many goal involvements for Bruno to feast upon

      I can't really blame you.

We all know the risks, but fact is they will play games and get points in the games they play.

I think they're overpriced because you don't get the minutes you should out of them for the price points, but no denying they will score well when they do play.

This might help. Seems to confirm what Miguel says. Previous Pep big signings in similar positions.

Riyad Mahrez 2018/19 season. Signed 10 July 2018 for £60m
Community Shield 5th August vs Chelsea – (Started & subbed after 66 mins)
GW1 Arsenal (started & subbed after 60 mins)
GW2 Huddersfield (sub appearance after 64 mins)
GW3 Wolves (sub appearance after 85 mins)
GW4 Newcastle (started & subbed after 76 mins)
GW5 Fulham (sub appearance after 74 mins)
Summary – started 2 matches out of the first 5 GWs, came on as sub in the other 3.

      Bernardo Silva 2017/18 signed 01 July 2017 for £43.5m.
GW1 August 12th Brighton (sub appearance after 85 mins)
GW2 Everton (sub appearance after 70 mins)
GW3 Bournemouth (started but subbed after 66 mins)
      GW4 Liverpool (unused sub)
GW5 Watford (sub appearance after 66 mins)
Summary – started 1 game out of the first 5 GW. Came on as sub in 3. Unused sub in the other.

Leroy Sane 2016/17 signed on Aug 02nd 2016 for £37m
GW1 (Aug 13) Sunderland (not in squad)
      GW2 Stoke (not in squad)
GW3 West Ham (not in squad)
GW4 Man U (sub appearance after 60 mins)
      GW5 Bournemouth (unused sub)
Summary – started 0 of first 5 GWs, came on as sub in 1, unused sub in 1, not in squad in the other 3.

Conclusion: One might argue that due to the huge transfer fee that Grealish will start from the off but history seems to suggest otherwise.
