We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) credentials of new Aston Villa midfielder Leon Bailey (£6.5m) in our latest Scout Report.

The Villans struck a deal with Bayer Leverkusen moments after their friendly win over Bristol City on Saturday with the club announcing their new arrival earlier today.

The Jamaican winger’s capture follows the signings of Emiliano Buendía (£6.5m) and Ashley Young (£5.0m), although Jack Grealish (£8.0m) is seemingly heading out of Villa Park and bound for Manchester City.

Bailey scored 39 goals and supplied a further 26 assists during his time in Germany as well as playing in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Villa head coach Dean Smith said:

Leon is a hugely exciting young striker with great pace and creativity.  He has enjoyed a successful career at Leverkusen and we are now looking forward to watching him show his skills and talents for Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The addition of Bailey suggests it will be an exciting season at Villa Park, but what exactly will he bring to Dean Smith’s side and where does he fit in?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions and assess his potential FPL worth in the article below.

THE HISTORY

Bailey started out in Jamaica at footballing school Phoenix All-Star Academy before heading to Europe in search of a club.

Having tried his luck in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, the youngster impressed during a trial at KRC Genk. However, the Belgian side were unable to offer him a contract due to FIFA restrictions on signing under-16 players.

Without a club, Bailey returned to the Caribbean, but his break arrived soon after when he signed for Austrian side FC Liefering and then Slovakian outfit AS Trenčín.

Such was his level of performance that he was then snapped up by Genk, where he swiftly became a fixture in the starting XI and went on to win the Belgian Young Footballer of the Year award in 2015/16, before Bayer Leverkusen paid €20m for his services in January 2017.

Having spent several months getting used to his new surroundings, he lit up the Bundesliga in his first full season in Germany, registering nine goals and six assists as he was named Newcomer of the Year by the VDV, Germany’s version of the PFA, and was also included in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

Despite a slight dip in the two seasons that followed, Bailey rediscovered his best form in 2020/21, bagging 15 goals and setting up a further 11 in all competitions.

BAILEY’S BUNDESLIGA RECORD AT BAYER LEVERKUSEN:

StartsSub AppsGoalsAssists
2016/170800
2017/1825596
2018/1921851
2019/20121053
2020/2125598

Above stats from WhoScored

At international level, Bailey has had something of a rocky relationship with the Jamaican football association, but finally made his senior debut against Honduras in June 2019 and has since gone on to represent his country on 10 occasions.

THE PROSPECTS – AND WHERE DOES HE FIT IN AT VILLA?

“Leon, like all players at Phoenix academy, are developed to play at all three points of attack. He can play on both feet; cut in from the right and onto his left; cut in from the left onto his right. He can play on both sides of the pitch. His favourite position is right wing but he will do whatever’s in the best interest of the team. Leon is superb at free-kick, dead-ball and corner situations.” – Craig Butler, stepfather and agent

Bailey is an extremely quick and versatile attacker who is comfortable playing on either flank.

However, he predominantly featured on the right wing of a 4-3-3 formation at Leverkusen last season, where he was able to cut inside onto his stronger left foot.

442 here, very balanced I feel , got the best defenders imo, with 3 premium mids and couple of favourable forwards, thoughts

    Bachmann
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell Digne

    Watkins Antonio

    Foster White Brownhill Obafemi

Greenwood could be an exciting option. If he doesn't play, you've got an "out" in the likes of Raphinha, Buendia, Bowen ...

Too much money in defence. Try to balance upgrading a mid like Mahrez (first game he will play but who knows after).

      Really nice

Chilwell remains a big temptation for me and may yet go there but dubious about that big at the back early on.

Pop Cancelo into midfield and we'd be close in structure anyway, Not really sure about his appeal - though I suppose he may find his shooting boots. Think there will be real value in the 6.0 and under category in midfield. Not a long term hold play.

Prefer Havertz to Mahrez but Lukaku may put the kibosh on that.

Mahrez is not a premium mid.
There is a lot of rotation risk there.

Cancelo Chilwell are high risk high potential picks. Shaw has that same potential with better fixtures.

Is the ownership putting you off?

different to template and a bit of depth on the bench.

    Sanchez (Foster)

    Salah, Pepe, Havertz, Greenwood (Raphina)
    DCL, Watkins, Wilson

There's different to template and there's picking a whole bunch of punts. Not a fan of the 'depth on the bench' if it ends up with you benching Raphinha.

      Yay

Another Jim - I'm not quite alone then.

Like it a lot and am on a very similar set up only without Bruno currently and a fifth mid over White. Could revert to something close to your set up if Havertz looks a bad idea (ie Lukaku) and I lose faith in Son potential as a captain pick.

Latest attempt. Fernandes vs Son is the major decision I have to settle on. For now I'm liking the idea of a Greenwood punt to try to cover or at least lessen the damage if United start hot. May very well bottle it and end up going with Bruno though.

    Sanchez
    TAA, Digne, Shaw
    Salah, Son, Mahrez, Greenwood, ESR
    Antonio, Watkins

    Foster; White, Ayling, Obafemi.

Have the option of playing 4-4-2 with Ayling (EVE, bur) instead of Smith Rowe (CHE, mci) in GWs 2 and 3 if I want.

Could also have Buendia/Raphinha + Fofana instead of ESR + Shaw.

Think it may be people simply not concentrating so much on long term value and looking at points early season.

Is it not usual for the early template to be based almost entirely on long term value from previous season and not based on the idea that we can make transfers?

Attack this season and not defend last season is my soundbite explanation.

To me, if you buy Coufal for 5.0 you play him every match as a set-and-forget.

I think I have finally done it - a team that excites me about the game and is not an absolute template.

    Meslier
    TAA • Cancelo • Chilwell
    Salah • Mahrez • Greenwood • Raphina
    Watkins • Antonio • Iheanacho

    Foster • Veltman • Sierralta • Brownhill

A bit unsure on 2 things:

    1. Go with Meslier
    2. Go with Sanchez and keep £0.5itb

    A. Greenwood
    B. Jota (but then I have no United players)

Could change Sierralta to Fofana if I go with Bachmann anyway. Veltman + Fofana + Brownhill I think will do the trick.

actually didn't notice Brownhill first glance, him and Veltman should be enough if you want to bank the 0.5 GL

I think you can do better on your 4.5m backups.

Ayling, White being the most reliable.

Ait Nouri, Dier, Diop as potential differentials.

At least those are the guys I'm watching. I like Veltman too.

White interests me. Had Ayling for ages, but his stats from last season were quite poor. It might be that I go with Ayling + Veltman, given how well Leeds and Brighton rotate in the first few gameweeks. I can keep swapping those two first on bench.

      I like it.

What about Bachmann? Watford were very good defensively last season in the championship. He'll get saves. Decent fixtures. I'd do that and bank 0.5m.

Jota over Greenwood. Stats are in his favor.

Agree on the Jota front. Originally, I had Jota in that £7.5 mid slot. Felt a bit uneasy going with no United and also feel like Greenwood may be more likely to play the first few games. I will ponder over this a bit more I am sure. Cheers Camzy!

Thanks both, I hadn't considered Bachmann. Interesting... I agree and would prefer to have the £0.5 to begin with. When I WC down the line, I would probably switch to Meslier though. Nice one, cheers!

Cancelo Chilwell. Interesting. 1M more than Digne Shaw.

      - Digne Shaw are cheaper.
      - Got the better fixtures
      - On Set Pieces
      - Aint rotation risks
      - Of course Chelsea and City have better defenses but have slightly worse fixtures(especially Chilwell)

Not trying to put you off and Chilwell Cancelo might outscore them. But you should have a strong valid reason for doing so.

      Good Luck

Thanks mate. Reasoning was that Chelsea and City were the 2 best defences last season and I Cancelo and Chilwell to hit the ground running the first couple of gameweeks. Shaw a great option, but I think United will need a few gameweeks to gel together before they start getting the clean sheets. Digne is decent, but it is Everton who are very unpredictable.

Didn't want to go with the template of TAA - Shaw - Digne. It could backfire, but it could boost me up the ranks early on if Digne/Shaw stay quiet and Cancelo + Chilwell run riot. It's all risk at the end of the day, but I am happy to take it. Easier to downgrade from a £6.0 defender down to a £5.5, than it is to find that £0.5 to upgrade. Could go either way, who knows.

        Good luck!

    Fresh thought

Trippier to United would mean set pieces changing hands no? Yes he can play on the left but that's basically a Southgate thing. AWB becomes dubious for starts and Shaw loses a huge slice of his assist potential.

    Hmmmmm.

That transfer would upset the apple cart.

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      5 years, 2 days ago

Shaw and AWB would still play the majority so not a massive issue but Trippier would get healthy minutes for sure so worth considering. When ole does 5 at the back or whenever Shaw is injured or AWB needs a rest is when he'd feature I think

      1. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 2 days ago

Would he really start over AWB?

Shaw was apparently a beast at Atletico and offers going forward in a way that AWB doesn't . Part of the solution on the United right making them less of a left only attack?

Be worse really if he was a bench option that would muddy things

      2. jia you
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 2 days ago

Don't see us ever playing 5 ATB but if we did I think AWB would be a monster of a right sided center half!

Have sometimes wondered if that was his real position

He can always improve of course but his game doesn't really fit in with the modern wingback model. I think of it as the Maldini transition 🙂

Right now he's probably 5th choice or so for England at right back and it could be a smart career move to go central.

yeah Trippier would play a lot at RWB if he signs I reckon...AWB has time still and could learn a lot from Trippier on the attacking side of his game
