Our Set Piece Takers tab details the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players responsible for corners, free-kicks and penalties at their respective clubs.

The table had its first refresh of the 2021/22 season following the completion of Gameweek 1, with the headline news in the article below.

PENALTIES

Which FPL players were on set-piece taking duties and penalties in Gameweek 1?

There were just two penalties awarded on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, with Aston Villa and West Ham United handed the chance to score from 12 yards in their respective games.

The situation remains a tad unclear at both clubs.

Danny Ings (£8.0m) stepped up to take Villa’s effort late on in the 3-2 defeat to Watford but Anwar El Ghazi (£6.0m), who established himself as the Villans’ first choice in 2020/21, has already been substituted.

Mark Noble (£4.5m) has been first in line for West Ham for some time but pitch-time is increasingly scarce for the veteran midfielder, so whoever is the deputy for David Moyes’s side is crucial.

Declan Rice (£5.0m) and loanee Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) had both taken two spot-kicks in Noble’s absence last season but it was Michail Antonio (£7.5m), with Rice on the pitch, who took charge when the Hammers were awarded a penalty at Newcastle United on Sunday; his miss further clouding the picture.

DIRECT FREE-KICKS

Above: A Custom Stats table taken from the Premium Members Area

Many of the usual suspects are present above, having been high up the pecking order for free-kicks last season.

Villa summer signiing Leon Bailey (£6.5m) is a name to note, however, having taken his side’s only direct free-kick on Saturday.

A lot of the familiar dead-ball specialists were again on corner-taking duties in Gameweek 1, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Son Heung-min (£10.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Luke Shaw (£5.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m), Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Mason Mount (£7.5m), Ashley Westwood (£5.5m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) all present in the above table.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m) seems to have more of a stronghold at Everton, meanwhile, with Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.0m) and James Rodriguez (£7.0m) out of the picture on Saturday and their futures uncertain.

On budget asset watch, Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m), in for the injured Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), took seven of Liverpool’s 11 corner-kicks on Saturday evening.

Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) delivered two of Norwich’s three corners, while Jairo Riedewald (£5.0m) also carried on where he left off in pre-season and was at the front of the queue for Crystal Palace – although Eberechi Eze (£6.0m) and Luka Milivojevic (£5.5m) were sidelined.

Matt Ritchie (£5.0m), newly classified as an FPL defender, was again first in line for Newcastle United, while Luke Thomas (£4.5m) shared responsibility with Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) at Leicester as James Maddison (£7.0m) was again overlooked.

Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m) was straight into the thick of the action for Villa, meanwhile, taking three of their four corners.

In the absence of Mathias Jensen (£5.0m), Brentford’s primary taker of set pieces in 2020/21, Sergi Canos (£5.5m) was handed corner-taking duties for the Bees at home to Arsenal.

Barnes and Mahrez owners what’s the plan? Will clearly hold Mahrez this week given the fixture and fully aware Barnes has Norwich the following week, but with price rising volatility anyone considering doing Barnes to Benrahma/Sarr, to fund Mahrez to Son the next?

I have barnes and I think I’ll hold and assess for at least one more gw

no I have Grealish and Raphinha who both blanked and got booked. Both had touch first fixtures so I can't be surprised. Raphinha is a long term pick, Grealish was targeting Norwich. Nothing other than injuries could really have swayed me to lose them this soon. Same must apply to Barnes and Mahrez.

Guess the one unusual thing was so many popular picks hauled, not sure I have ever seen it before. Leads to serious FOMO.

Yeah fair points. My midfield is Salah, Bruno, Raph, Barnes and Mahrez. I think it’s more price volatility affecting my thinking and knowing I could miss out on Son in GW3. Mahrez was never going to be a long-term hold for me.

I have Greenwood & Mahrez so will monitor this week and might do Greenwood & Mahrez to 6-6.5m mid & Son in GW3.

Normally I'd say hold Barnes, but it if you really want Son and that's the only way to fund it, then it's worth considering at least.

Surely for Mahrez or any other City assets, it's a case of don't buy don't sell. Stick to the plan.

As you said Barnes has nor GW3 so it's a keep for me.

I def won’t sell Mahrez before Norwich. It was more a thought of getting the £ in place to fund the move to Son the following week. Barnes looks the most saleable asset in my team to fund it.

    6. MJF
      5 years, 14 days ago

I have Mahrez and I am fully expecting to sell ahead of GW3 in order to get Bruno in. Going to give him Norwich and cross my fingers that him and Greenwood both start in GW2!

Yeah not having Bruno is a bigger issue tbh. I already own him, but I’m just looking to move Mahrez to someone around the same price point.

I have Barnes and holding for 1 more GW.

The problem is Barnes is having Norwich GW3, the week when I thought of switching him for Son while swapping Toney for 4.5m FWD

    8. El Presidente

I have them both and I have £1m itb so really not worried about getting Son. I actually have my doubts about Son when Spurs face low block opposition. The question is Barnes to a 6.0 would definitely be on route to get a premium striker which I think will be the case

    9. Soto Ayam
      • 7 Years

Have both and will keep Barnes for a while. West ham and Norwich should yield some success. Gw3 do Martinez to a 4.5 keeper and mahrez to son.

Managed 100 points without Bruno somehow, but I've got a big Mahrez shaped problem. Will give him Norwich but then he's out - any thoughts on who to get with 9.5 itb.

    Current team:
    Bachmann
    TAA Shaw Tsimikas
    Salah Son Greenwood Mahrez Benrahma
    Ings Antonio

    Subs: White, Veltman, Obafemi

So I'm planning a bit of hokey cokey, which might not be for everyone.

Salah to Bruno and Mahrez to mid price of choice for GW3.
      Son to Salah for GW5.

Very bold! Think I'm gonna stay Bruno-less for now! I like the flexibility without & think there's so much value in midfield

I just think Salah has a very tough fixture GW3 and Leeds away mightn't be easy GW4 either. I imagine most people will captain Bruno/Son GW3 and 4 so if Salah does score, hopefully damage will be limited.

Team looks great I would be holding this week for certain.

Sancho could be a great option if he looks really good against Southampton - might mean non-Bruno owners can get away with it by doing Mahrez -> Sancho.

I would do it if the price swing is 0.2. If Barns won't drop, I'll hold. I was eying up Benrahma for gw 3, feel so depressed because of the price rise now.

I like Barnes - was very close between him and Benrahma for the spot but chose to not get too hyped by his pre-season form :D. It is only one gameweek, but at 1M cheaper I'm not sure it would be too risky a transfer. Either one of them could score more in the next fixture of course.

I think it depends on what you plan to do the with the funds. Considering it this week as want to move Mahrez to Son the following week. Will likely hold though. Having Bertrand back would likely benefit Barnes.

Which was why I went with Sarr instead.

It was a 3 way between Sarr, Barnes and Benrahma, and in the end Sarr was the one I was most confident of being absolutely nailed on and vital to his team if they are going to succeed.

But, Barnes is a good pick and is going to get his points. Every player blanks, but you don’t ship the good ones out after one non productive week, though!

I have Barnes and I'm keeping him, but I can understand the move to a 6.0. First because they did really well (Benrahma, Fornals, Soucek, Sarr, Bergwijn) plus Harrison and Willock for example and second because frees up cash for other moves in the next GWs, moves to Son and/or Lukaku for example.

Doucoure — playing a more advanced role - more box to box than Ancellotti who had him more holding/defensive. Could be a snip if he's in that position for the forseeable (can't really see why he wouldn't given the current lack of firepower). I'd imagine he'll outscore Sarr/Benrama etc as the service with Digne/Coleman/Richarlison/Townsend is arguably going to be better than Watford/Hammers.

His more attacking role hinted at before the match: https://www.evertonfc.com/news/2212661/doucoures-new-midfield-role

West Ham have an marginal better first 11 with Rice/Soucek being the difference over Allan/Gomes + Gbamin (When fit). But in terms of value for money Doucoure could be a great punt — currenly have Sarr, and very happy obviously, but was only for short term Watford fixtures as I look toward finding cash for Lukaku.

Pound for pound though, Hammers a very comparable to Everton front to back - but reckon Everton have a stronger squad. James not withstanding.

Nice observation, I was very surprised to see him take a shot from that position when he scored. But he did similar things at Watford and was hit and miss. I remember getting him for the exact same reason over Deulofeu and got burned.

      Son and Shaw.

Not enough for Son without getting rid of TAA, who could come close to marching Son anyways, and thought I’d start with Digne as I didn’t want to overload on players in the United v Leeds game.

Got away with being Shawless this week, but I’m not stupid and I know that unless Digne starts getting returns pretty quickly Shaw is likely going to punish me.

Does the Fernandes price rise make sense? Or is it rigged. Surprised a player that is 51% owned can go up after 3 days.

Is it not the % owned vs. % bought in that dictates the rise? So relative to ownersip before the GW begins. In other words a player with 1000 managers would probably see .2 if 1m managers bring him in. I'd imagine his ownership at GW1 KO was 25/30% (Guess).

The price rises are relative to the ownership, but they can't be directly proportional. If a player scores a hattrick, is the second most transferred in player and doesn't get a price rise then it would feel more "rigged" to me. How many bruno in transfers would you be happy with triggering a rise?

Not sure what you mean by "rigged" as that implies that there's some sort of rule they *won't* manipulate price rises to work however they please. It's not like the way price rises work is designed to be transparent.

or just leave alone. Unless some really cheap attackers and midfielders appear as enablers, it's hard to get 3x ultra premium in. I think Salah, Bruno and Son is about the most you can do.

Try and get the rest of your squad set as soon as possible and then try hopping from premiums depending on fixtures and when you will captain them.

But I do think when Chilwell becomes available he should be able to keep pace with TAA for 1.5 less

    5. Nate(U)dog(ie)

Can't have them all, same if Kane moves to City. It's good for the game to have more premium options, means you have to decide between them so the template begins to be harder to set in stone

Mmm what to do about Benrahma. Bit of a dilema really. Quite a few experts on twitter were singing his praises including Mark Sutherns.

My own feelings on him were that he has never previously been an FPL option. Never nailed and always subbed off early when he did start. So why would he all of a sudden be an option now just because he has had a good pre-season? Pre-season performances normally count for nothing.

Kind of annoying that he got that 12pt haul really and its obviously brought him to my attention. The problem is, when Antonio inevitably gets injured, which lets face it is only a matter of time, it impacts hugely on West Ham's attack so will likely dent Benrahma's points potential. So those who have both Antonio and Benrahma would have a problem.

The other thing to consider is that West Ham have European football this season.

Lingard affected his potential last season. If Lingard is going to feature for West Ham this season again (dependant on transfer) then it will be another reason to monitor Benrahma

I assume you are talking about buying him here? Looks red hot from what I saw yesterday. Playing no. 10 in an attacking West Ham team means he’s likely to remain among the points.

I wouldn't worry about the negatives of possible injuries and Europa games after GW4. There are good alternatives in that price bracket so not difficult to move away.

Lingard isn't there this season so Benramha's spot is much more secure.

He had a very good season with Brentford in C'ship but, like many players, needed time to settle in PL. It looks like he has developed well. Sure, Antonio might get injured or West Ham's form might dip when they play Europa. But he's only 6.0, not a 12.0 premium. It's a bit much to be letting future hypothetical situations put you off a nailed 6.0 attacker in great form with good fixtures in a top 6 side.

Yeah I get your point. The way I play though, I like to try and avoid pitfalls and having so many fires to put out that it either forces an early wildcard or worse still enforces pt hits if I have already used the wildcard. Im probably gonna stick with Barnes for now.

    7. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 14 days ago

He effectively played in Lingard's role, almost as a false 9 a lot of the time where Antonio would shift wide left to make space for him, and whenever Antonio is out he might play up top

Its not a dilemma if you don't think he will do well. Just don't bring him in.

Best piece of advice I saw was forget about ownership and just pick the players you think will get the most points.

People can have an opinion on who they think will do well but ultimately only yours matters when it comes to your team.

He could be a good consistent scorer even in tough matches - I'm more worried about a rapid price rise if he does score over next couple of matches.

That's fair and what I think I will do as well - just got that itch that he will get a goal a game in the meantime haha

I'm going Salah, Son, Lukaku, at least for a while and might move Salah to KDB or Kane depending on circumstances. Bruno, Salah and Lukaku/Kane/KDB is pushing it a bit too much IMO, it'll be too top-heavy

Did anyone watch the Brentford game? If so, how did Toney look? Was surprised to see they'd scored 2 and no involvement from him.

He was fine. Goals to come.

He played very well but was doing more work around the pitch than up top, he was making a nuisance of himself in the air, put in a few tackles and blocks and pressing too. Even then he still put through Mbeumo with a nice flick, I imagine that was tactical for that game and in games against teams like Palace he'll be back up front. Brentford were also missing a few players in midfield too which might have added to that need

Looks like a premier league player. He had to work deeper against Arsenal because they kept the ball but everything he did he did well. Palace is a big test for him and Brentford

Hard to say that was the worst game in that gw and arsenal looked super poor

How are people feeling about Barnes and Raphinia after the opener?

Definitely keeping Raphinha. Don't know about Barnes.

Raphinha had a tough fixture, so wasn't surprised by the blank. booking was annoying and looked like a walking red card towards the end. The sitter he missed late on was even more annoying. He was always a longer term pick for me, so not worried yet.

Prefer to hold Barnes and roll the FT. Hopefully Bertrand is back available in GW2. Better combo down the left side

Have both, keeping both. Raphinha was poor but I expect a response from Leeds against Everton at home and from him in particular, didn't see Leicester but Barnes is still working his way to full fitness and next two are promising. If he does nothing in those then maybe I'll drop him but will give him at least those 2

Raph I'm not too concerned about, Barnes gets until the Norwich game.

Why do we try to 'cover' players from certain teams? Either get the premium or ignore, there are plenty of other teams with better value players for the same price as the covers who often are rotation risks and have a small chance of return.

See plenty trying to cover Son now with some dubious alternatives.
