WEST HAM UNITED 4-1 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Pablo Fornals (£6.0m), Said Benrahma (£6.2m), Michail Antonio x2 (£7.7m)
  • Assists: Benrahma, Antonio, Declan Rice (£5.0m), Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m)
  • Red cards: Ayoze Perez (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Antonio x3, Benrahma x2, Fornals x1, Rice x1

BENRAHMA AND ANTONIO EXCEL

In a dominant victory for West Ham United over 10-man Leicester City, Michail Antonio (£7.7m) scored two late goals and made another in a stellar solo performance.

Said Benrahma (£6.2m) also impressed, as he scored for the second game in a row and added an assist on his way to another 12-point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul.

The Algerian lacked consistency in his debut top-flight campaign, but seems to have gained the trust of manager David Moyes in recent weeks.

“I think Said needed to take stock and settle in and realise he had to be a team player as much as an individual. I think that he had not realised that he is part of a team and we have to do all the right things together and because of that he’s actually getting these goals, he’s making goals, which is what we brought him for.” – David Moyes

Meanwhile, Antonio led the line superbly as he became the Hammers record Premier League goalscorer, and after last nights showing, has now attempted more shots than any other player over the opening two rounds:

A possible Gameweek 3 captaincy shout, then, which we’ll explore in more detail in our Captain Sensible article later this week.

Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m) also deserves a mention, as he picked up his first assist of the season and ended the match with more opposition-half touches (47) than any other player on the pitch.

There is no doubt West Ham benefitted from Leicester being reduced to 10-men last night, but performances so far have been hugely encouraging and their prospects look good ahead of Crystal Palace (h) in Gameweek 3.

ANOTHER BLANK FOR BARNES

Only Manchester City and Manchester United won more points away from home than Leicester City in the Premier League last season, but the Foxes were outplayed in their first game on the road in 2021/22.

Now, Brendan Rodgers will be without Ayoze Perez (£6.0m) as well for three games as a result of his straight red card.

It was a night to forget for Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) too, as the winger failed to register an attempt on goal and was hauled off for Patson Daka (£7.4m) on 64 minutes. However, owners may be content to hold for one more week, given their Gameweek 3 fixture against Norwich City and the fact Perez is suspended.

City were without Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m) for the clash after the Denmark international picked up a knee injury in training ahead of Monday’s match. Assessing his fitness, Rodgers said:

“Hopefully, he can get back onto the field this week. He was playing in a game in training and just hurt his knee and felt some pain in it. He’s had a couple of scans and it doesn’t show anything too serious. We’re hoping we can get him onto the pitch in the midweek.”

Speaking at full-time, Rodgers also discussed his team’s performance at the London Stadium:

“We’re obviously disappointed with the result. The spirit of the team was really good. We kept fighting. The mentality of the team was really good. With 20 to 25 minutes to go, we were 2-1 [down], and then just as we were about to make the changes to try and make a go for it in the last 20 minutes, we obviously conceded the third.”

We had good possession [early on]. We worked the ball, I just felt that technically, we were too slow on it. We needed to be cleaner in our possession but smoother in our passing, and that would have got us through quicker. It’s something to take forward into the next game.

The first two goals [we conceded] were mistakes. We were in good possession of the ball, but we gave it away. That’s obviously not so good. Then, the other goals, of course, we didn’t defend so well, but it’s also really good play by Michail Antonio. He finishes them really well.”

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Rice, Soucek, Bowen, Fornals, Benrahma (Noble 88), Antonio (Yarmolenko 89)

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Pereira, Amartey, Soyuncu, Thomas, Ndidi, Tielemans, Perez, Maddison (Soumare 81), Barnes (Daka 64), Vardy (Iheanacho 81)

Reece James had 1.5 xGI in the weekend. That was Arsenal's second team, but still it's quite impressive for a defender. The temptation to transfer him in is real, but on the other hand, Digne has really nice fixtures.Maybe it would be better to get him in for Shaw, when United's fixture turn for the worse in GW7?

I would absolutely be going for James rather than Digne, and gw7 seems the perfect time.

Shaw to James GW7 makes sense, but a lot of people are making that switch now!

It's going to cost 0.3m keeping Digne for now instead of going for James straight away

Everton have scored 5 goals with no Digne involvement and he has really poor BPS from the two games
James is going to love crossing to Lukaku and I think the times he plays will make up for any missed matches

Add in Chalobah's 14 points from gw1 and you have 33 points from that position in just two weeks

      1. Guba

Azpi was playing in that position against CPL, not Chalobah.

I do mostly agree with your sentiment though. James is still a wait and see me if he starts v Liverpool.

      I will be honest here.

I expect Reece to have a good season, especially now that Lukaku is actually occupying the areas he crosses the ball into so well.

However, Arsenal were AMATEUR in defending him on Sunday. They left James in absolute acres of space down that wing on so many occasions that he was allowed to more or less walk into the box unmarked. That's the main reason he got his returns.

Now, hosing Lukaku up top is going to mean a similar sort of thing will happen a bit more often... but teams are not going to try and defend us the way Arsenal did down that side. They were pathetic.

Pre-TDD, I'd be mindful of Chelsea getting Kounde. It might involve moving Azpi back to his RB/RWB position, making James a rotation risk again.

James is a real headache. I'm looking at bringing him in in a few weeks, but it seems imperative to have a decent defender on the bench to come on for him when he inevitably gets rotated out for certain games.

Is there anybody, ANYBODY, on here who actually picks their squad, makes decisions on who to start and who to bench, who to transfer out, who to transfer in, who to captain and when to use their chips by themselves? As in using their own judgement?

If this doesn’t get hulked I’m calling my lawyer.

Unsurprisingly the majority of posts on a fantasy football discussion forum are discussing moves to make on said fantasy football game. Odd post.

I enjoy discussion, but that's not what most posts are. Most posts take the form of "do my thinking for me". I gloss over them, but it is a bit dismaying to see them dominate the forum.

Dunno, I don't agree. Most people are just asking for opinions to balance out their own. I don't see why that comes as a surprise. Agree though that discussion is great.

On Harvey Barnes. Last year i brought him in way too late, he stopped score and then a got injured. He is an FPL player i never really had any luck with. I did a lot of research ahead of this season - and for some strange reason I ended up starting with him!!! Anyway I took a (what i thought by then) desperate move already after GW1 and brought in Benhrama. Cant be more happy than what i am now, and a top 4.0k overall. Until next time, never Harvey again!

If he manages to play 3000 minutes he would get 200 points ... I thought that would be this season but he hasn't been fully fit and Leicester have had a difficult start. I reluctantly sold him last night for Benrahma but I expect I will get him back later on

I have this same relationship with Antonio. Every time I had him in my team last season he either blanked or got injured.

That's why I started without him and now I'm like 30 points behind everyone. I've now put him in so you can all blame me when he blanks in the next 2.

I kneejerked a little thinking about it today, but price rises and watching that West Ham spanking forced my hand.
I made some in hindsight poor decisions going with Gundo, Barnes and Toney at the start of the season and wanted to grab some value and hopefully ride the form.

I have brought in DCL and Benrahma to have the following team, do you think it was the right choice?

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling
    Salah, Bruno, Ben, Barnes
    DCL, Ings, Antonio

    Livaremento, Gilmour, Tsmikas

Is that because you saw something in Bowen? I saw that a lot on here about going Bowen over Benrahma. Seemed mad to me unless people thought Antonio would be injured by now and Bowen would be playing up front.

There's a site called fplreview that has very useful tables. It insisted the best VALUE midfielder is Bowen. I couldn't accept it but it did make me look deeper into West Hams stats and on that basis I chose Benrahma.

Ayling massively underperformed his xGI last season so there should be more attacking returns for him this season. Most squads need/have a couple of slots for cheap defenders so just pointing out a decent-ish run. TBH I'm not sure Livramento will be nailed enough to make it fully work out being his first full professional season.

No, it's good. When Leeds have all their defenders fit, they generally do well against most sides, but not so much the top ones - for those games Livramento holds the fort.

    Have 2 free transfers.

White for Ayling now due to fixtures
Vieltman to keep when he's fit
Tsimikas to keep on bench and later change to Livramenta?

Dias to Reguillon/Dier a smart move? I have 2 FT so would roll one into GW4.

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Dias Dunk Shaw Tsikmas
    Salah Bruno Son Benrahma Gilmour
    Toney Antonio Scarlett

Anything else you guys think is better?

Tsimikas to Livramenta while you can get 0.1 in the bank
I rather look at Coufal as he has alot of attacking threat

Tottenhams defensive stats are horrific. Don't be fooled by the cleansheets the numbers tell a different story. However saying that, their next couple of fixtures are nice.

He is a flat track bully. Burnley is a good game for him so I think we will learn more this weekend. His points were very concentrated in a few hauls last season.

Great point, so easily forgotten. People saw the stats and said he offers similar to Raphinha. It's true across the season but Harrison hauls rather than ticks over.

I started to wonder how much money is worth. Didn't bother to collect too much data yet, but compared McGinn and Bissouma last year just as an example. Their price difference was one million and Mcginn got 37 more pts. Let's just assume that real average difference is 30 pts per million during the whole season. It would mean that .1 million is worth 3 pts.

If this is the case, it would suggest that taking a 4 pt hit just to gain 0.1 tv is not worth it and will cost 1 pt come the end of the season. On the other hand if one player is going up and another is going to drop in price, taking a hit would give value gain worth 6 pts and theoretical net gain would be 2 pts.

Naturally there are many other factors to be considered and those numbers are just examples based on gut feeling. But for example I am now seriously considering to do Omobamidele > Livramento (-4) to correct my rookie error. It gives me 2nd starting sub and may save me one transfer later. I can also easily see a situation where 2nd sub is needed and I could be forced to make downgrade elsewhere to get funds for my 5th def. In that scenario I would regret not having bitten the bullet now. I know many will disagree, but what is your opinion?

For me thats why we have the first wildcard. To sort out our bench and move out the duds with more data on how each team is performing.

Taking hits should only really be a thing if you are bringing in a player that has good fixtures/form for one which has bad fixtures or form.

Taking a hit to move a bench player out for a player that is unlikely to get many returns if needed anyway seems like a bad idea.

      1. Baps Hunter
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

So it does. But the risk of being forced to make downgrade elsewhere and to take a hit later just to be able to field starting XI is not ideal either during these covid times. This alone is not reason good to WC yet. And I have to get DCL in anyway next week. (So I don't seem to have time to sort my bench, there will always be something else). Yet, if two bench players are too much and one is enough, then I am "safe".
