We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Arsenal v Crystal Palace.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on Sunday’s two Premier League fixtures here and here.

ARSENAL 2-2 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m), Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) | Christian Benteke (£6.3m), Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m)
  • Assists Nicolas Pepe (£7.1m), Gabriel Martinelli (£5.2m) | Jordan Ayew (£5.9m), Michael Olise (£5.4m)
  • Bonus: Aubameyang x3, Benteke x3, Edouard x1

PALACE IMPRESS DESPITE LATE SETBACK

ARS/CRY

A 95th-minute equaliser from Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) saw Arsenal rescue a draw at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

However, that aside, it was a match full of positives for Crystal Palace, who carried a real threat going forward and probably deserved all three points.

“It was so close but we have been saying that a little bit too often. We have to learn from the games we played previously. I am really disappointed because the way the team came back in the second half, they deserved to win the game.

I am frustrated for them, they were brave and showed character and to concede a goal like that I am disappointed for my players.

We conceded those goals on set pieces on the second phases and we need to work on that. We have to put our sleeves up and put our bodies on the line. We were really unlucky today, it is the way it is but I believe there is more to come from the team to challenge even better.” – Patrick Vieira

ZAHA LATEST

Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 8

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) missed out tonight though illness, having felt unwell since returning from international duty last week.

As a result, he hadn’t trained, and sat out his first Premier League match of the current campaign.

“The plan is for him to do some light training tomorrow and he will be joining the team on Wednesday morning.” – Patrick Vieira on Wilfried Zaha

With Zaha out, Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) took up a wider role on the left (no. 22 below), with Christian Benteke (£6.3m) leading the line in Patrick Vieira’s 4-3-3 formation.

Crystal Palace’s average position map v Arsenal in Gameweek 8

As for Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) – who is owned by 7.8% of FPL managers – he carried plenty of attacking threat on the night, and despite serving up his third blank in the last four Gameweeks, ended the match with three shots and was also involved in the buildup to Palace’s second goal.

With Newcastle United up next at Selhurst Park, owners will surely be content to hold another week, but with champions Manchester City to follow, he will need to return soon to keep ticking over.

AUBAMEYANG ON TARGET

Since Gameweek 4, which coincided with Arsenal’s fixtures easing, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) has now registered three goals and 29 FPL points.

During that time, he ranks fifth in his position for expected goal involvement (xGI), and top amongst team-mates for goal attempts and shots in the box.

Admittedly, he is difficult to accommodate in our squads right now, but with Aston Villa, Watford and Newcastle United up next at the Emirates, he certainly has the platform to keep on delivering.

As for the Gunners, there were few positives on the night, with their 43% possession total in the opening half clearly not enough for a side who wants to take the initiative in front of their own fans.

Despite going five games unbeaten now in the Premier League, that suggests that they will need improve to improve ahead of Villa (h) and Leicester City (a), especially defensively, having suffered several shaky moments at the back tonight.

“A strange game. We started really well, we were dominant and we scored the goal. After that we lacked composure to manage the game. We didn’t have a sequence of passes and then the team was stretched.

After half time we changed a couple of things and we got better but we gave the ball away in areas you can’t and after that we have a mountain to climb.

Credit they didn’t give up, we had some big chances and then got the goal in the end.

My perception was we were trying to protect something instead of going for the second one. We were not comfortable.” – Mikel Arteta

Elsewhere, Bukayo Saka (£6.4m) was withdrawn at half-time, following a heavy challenge from James McArthur (£4.5m) just before the break, and later appeared on the bench with a heavily strapped calf muscle.

“Obviously, he couldn’t continue and he’s a boy that’s pretty tough and wants to keep playing, but he could not carry on and we have a quick turnaround for the next game, so we will see how he evolves.” – Mikel Arteta on Bukayo Saka

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey (Martinelli 81), Odegaard (Lacazette 67), Smith Rowe, Pepe, Saka (Sambi Lokonga 45), Aubameyang

C Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Guehi, Andersen, Mitchell, Milivojevic (Kouyate 67), McArthur, Gallagher, Ayew (Olise 71), Edouard (Tomkins 82), Benteke

I see Stones hasn't travelled with the City squad to Brugge but he's not injured, wonder if he's one of the unvaccinated lot

Would not get him in irrespective of his choices or availability.

Saying that, if he does not play during the week then then there is a chance he could play the weekend.

        This wouldn't surprise me:

        Walker Dias Stones Zinch

Actually, it's what I expect, if Pep trusts Laporte at LB after the Burnley game. But the only way to find out is hindsight

One rest for Cancelo is coming before December. No idea where or when it'll be, so I'm not going to bother about it as an owner. Just wouldn't be surprising if it's this week, after the Walker and Dias rests

You're probably right but i wouldn't have any hesitancy about owning Dias and Cancelo at this point. One transfer away from it. Too bad my midfield is a shambles and needs multiple transfers!

Interesting. If so, maybe that is why until last weekend Pep has not been playing as he does not want Covid to spread around his squad ! 🙂

Get Laporte in at 5.5m !

Kaku vs Norwich is a great fixture to lean on, no denying it. Vardy is more consistent...but how long will it last? If Vardy blanks and Lukaku eviscerates Norwich, you know what the narrative will be on here....

      It writes itself.

Lukaku has some tasty fixtures coming up, especially Norwich up next. And even if it doesn't work out, you can always go Lukaku to Vardy, though going the reverse may be more difficult.

    5. Jerse

In all seriousness, a classic fixtures v form canundrum. Lukaku has been less than dreadful for his price tag (5.5m would have been a fair reflection !-he has 5 points more than Hwang despite more minutes), but has 2 or 3 plum fixtures. Vardy has been doing it for years, his form has been great,is the second highest points scorer in the game despite Leicester being indifferent till now (although the return of Evans in defence is huge).

I think with Evans back and Kelechi in the team, Leicester are a different animal (how many sides have put 4 past Man U recently) and are an attacking team, but Chelsea are so defensive despite the resources at Touchel's disposal.

I will get shot down by the herd, but I am going Vardy, and I get £1.1m to improve other areas.

      Good luck.

City had to because it's all about closing a loophole they ruthlessly exploited and got away with. It shouldn't be possible for an actual nation that doesn't care about profits to pour billions in creating a squad of galacticos. I agree the whole corporate nature of football stinks already, but there are still lines that ought not be crossed.

The Mount trade makes no appeal esp as he has been on the bench of late.

      A Gunner story.

Arsenal were crap, then slightly recovered, and we had hope! Beating a wretched Spurs. I could have scored against them. Less hope. Then drew against Brighton! No disrespect! Then can't beat Palace at home. Viera factor! Magic!

I can't keep track, to be honest. Spurs are still garbage. But Arteta is a fraud. End of story! Goodnight!

I've come round to the conclusion that Arteta is tactically naive, despite being a disciple of Pep. If they can stick with him until the end of the season, Vieira will come in and Arsenal will be a force once more.

'Based on the interviews' isn't good enough. He's out of his league. Learning from Pep doesn't mean you're as astute.

No. He isn't good enough. He doesn't have the experience. I don't hate him but he's not the man for th3 job.

I'm actually surprised at how Arteta has low-key been getting a tune out of Arsenal over the last 9 months or so

League form table - Matchday 24 of last season to Matchday 8 of this season (All teams played 23 games)

          1. Man City - 50
          2. Pool - 47
          3. Chelsea - 47
          4. Utd - 43
          5. Arsenal - 41
          6. West Ham - 40
          7. Spurs - 38

I mean... he's only 9 points off being the best team in the league on points over about two thirds of a season...

That's just very sneaky from him to somehow manage this without anyone really realising

I appreciate this attempt but when you watch the team perform it's a different scenario.

They won't come close to a European spot and you know that. (Though if I'm wrong I'm happy to be).

I hear ya - everyone wants everything now

But looking at that form table it would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater to sack him & start again

Are you really going to find a new guy that could have Arsenal any higher than 5th over the last 23 games?

White, Tomiyasu, Ramsdale all have been there barely a wet minute & are still settling

Saka's injury last night really impacted them - Smith Rowe is developing at a rate of knots

They're a win against Villa away from being in the champions league places on that form table...

I'm not a massive Arteta fan myself I have to say - but overall he's been getting the points the last 9-10 months

Fair points. Without Arteta would it really be that different? No, probably not. I just hate his approach. The newbies need a bit more time. I just want to attack!

So many managers guilty of that at the minute - watching Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal is getting more and more torturous by the week, so so negative. Nuno is another deviant for negative football

Solksjaer & Tuchel have more to answer for in that department than Arteta though with the players at their disposal

Examples of his tactical naivety last night:

Arsenal started the game with a fantastic high press that won the ball back off Palace high up the pitch. But then after scoring, they dropped back into a deep block and invited Palace pressure. One reason is Partey is not suited to play the blocker alone, and he only brought on Lokonga because Saka got injured. This inconsistency in playing style is a major concern two years into Arteta’s reign.

I don't know, what he did kind of made sense to me - I could see the logic in it at anyways

You can't press like that for 90 min sustainably, and with the blistering pace he had in the team, wanting to sit back to draw Palace out & hit them on the break with the pace of Saka, Auba, ESR & Pepe made total sense

The players just didn't defend well enough and Palace also did very well

And I mean the more I think about this

The elephant in the room - Viera had an absolutely monstrous, game-changing slice of luck with the McArthur Yellow Card

How on earth he didn't get sent off... Palace should have been playing that second half 1-0 down with 10 men

And to rub salt in the wound Arsenal lose one of their best players from it, yet still manage to get a point from a pretty unjust situation - that was horrific luck for Arteta

Playing Brentford decimated with Covid was similar bad luck

I get your point with this but a lot of those wins were against poor teams or teams in poor form. In those games they beat Newcastle, Leeds, West Brom, Palace, Brighton and Sheffield Utd. In fairness they also beat Chelsea, but that was a turgid game where they scored from a misplaced backpass from Jorginho then had the whole team behind the ball for the rest of the game, and they beat Leicester with a good performance (although even then that was during their late-season collapse that seems to be the norm now) and they beat Spurs as well. Still, you can only beat what's in front of you, I guess more than anything it's the performances and style that raise eyebrows and that fans have issues with.

He's certainly not good to watch

But I've never actually seen an arsenal fans complain that "we're doing really well under HIM in the league this calendar year all things considered, we're just not playing scintillating football"

The complaints are usually more along the lines of "HE'S SHITE, WE'RE SHITE, SACK HIM, SACK EVERYONE, AAAARRRRGGHHHHH"

Yeah true, these would be the same that would judge him as a fraud after losing to City and Chelsea as those that would act like all is suddenly perfect after beating Norwich and Burnley. Although I can't exactly say this is unique to Arsenal supporters

Lukaku has demonstrated for over 8 seasons that he is more than capable of 5 or 6 returns in those next three fixtures, that's all there is really

I wouldn't be surprised in all honesty. I hope he is given a rest in the CL, but Tuchel would want to play him and give him a chance to get BACK into the scoring sheet. Would be interesting but can't see him being benched anytime soon unless he goes another 4/5 games without a goal which tbh can't see it.

I remember there was a lot of that logic floating around a couple of seasons ago (Mark Sutherns in particular) when he had scored 3 or 4 games in a row, including the Southampton 9-0 demolition

He ended up returning something like 11 games in a row & destroyed people left, right & centre

Granted he's about 53 now so maybe the body will start failing him... but he's a vicious little rascal when he's on it, completely remorseless in his scoring

He's a very streaky player too Vardy. Either returning in loads of games on the bounce or not scoring for 2 months. So maybe I'll put him in actually.

            Why?

He's 12.5, has no service, rabbit in the headlights manager, dressing room morale at an all time low, terrible fixtures, and as of now, based on all the information we have to hand is also off penalties?

What exactly do you expect him to do against Liverpool, Spurs, City, Chelsea in his next 5 league games, when they're sandwiched between 3x must win champions league games vs Atalanta twice & Villareal?

            Hattricks every game or something?

Sure he might nick goals, maybe a few 6's, 7's & 8's, maybe even a 9 or two...

But its much more likely he clips along at 3 or 4 points per game over the next 5 - maybe 5 points per game max

Cheers….not a bad idea. Mbuemo is just ridiculous as an OOP option at 5.5 though. I’m wondering Toney out

Best mid price mid to bring in?

No one else really stands out. Try and stretch your budget to a City mid

              I get it.
Out of two I'd risk it with Traore as can't see them keeping CS at Leeds but at all honestly I would look to move them on.

Planning my next substitutions. Any way to bring in Son?

        Sanchez
        Rudiger Chillwell TAA
        Salah Foden Doucoure Benny
        Lukaku Vardy Edouard

        Steele Livra Duffy Gilmour
        ITB 0

Already used the FTs for this week to get in Vardy.

Nope. A and you're in good shape.

Although James may cause issues. Don't buy Chelsea fullbacks, silly!

Would consider B. Antonio your prefered option in that bracket? Considering Werner, Jimenez, Toney, Jesus and Antonio myself. Antonio feels like the boring but safest bet
