Most teams have completed their pre-season tours around the globe and as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, we are always looking to gain whatever information we can from these warm-up matches.

The “it’s only pre-season” phrase is thrown about a lot so it is often difficult to know how much we can really discern from these games.

Indeed, there’s this excellent analysis done by the Opta Analyst account that shows that there is very little correlation between a team’s pre-season results and their form in the first 10 league matches.

I completely agree with what one Twitter user said in one of the replies: goals/assists/clean sheets are largely irrelevant but minutes, formation and fitness is what I think we can take from these games.

With that in mind, these are my thoughts so far…

Chelsea

As a Chelsea fan, it is only fair that I start by talking about the Blues first. It was always going to be a summer of transition after losing so many key players and there also being changes in the boardroom. We have an extremely bloated squad, full of players who are looking to leave but who nobody wants. It’s also the first time this group of players has had a manager for an extended period, so I don’t know if maybe they are just used to the constant shock factor that a change in head coach brings?

Either way, I know I said we shouldn’t read too much into the goal/clean sheet numbers but the performances in the games I watched were very poor and disjointed. Thomas Tuchel does not sound like a happy man and I am inclined to ignore the Blues’ assets early doors. Reece James (£6.0m) will likely be playing right centre-back until we get some reinforcements and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) is nowhere near sharpness yet.

Manchester United

I blame my pod partner and fellow Pro Pundit Lateriser for this: I am quite bullish on United after what I have seen. Again, I am not reading too much into the goals they scored against Liverpool’s third-string team or Crystal Palace’s B team. I am looking at the patterns of play and the movement off the ball, and this team is completely unrecognisable. The manager let David de Gea (£5.0m) know in no uncertain terms how he wants to play and Erik ten Hag seems to me a manager with a clear philosophy, something Manchester United have lacked in the last decade.

Their assets are definitely under-priced after their disastrous 2021/22 campaign and I am undecided still who to go for between Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.0m). The elephant in the room obviously is Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m): he is still a Manchester United player at the time of writing and might be when the season kicks off but I think he will be gone by the end of the transfer window. However, it does raise some concern, as Martial could easily take Rashford’s spot on the left. Jadon Sancho (£7.5m), then, seems to be the most ‘stable’ of the lot.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Arsenal

The Gunners have had a great transfer window and I am very bullish about Gabriel Jesus’ (£8.0m) prospects this season. I really rate the player and breaking free from the shackles of a Pep Guardiola system should give him a lot more freedom. He has also already spoken about how he wants to add more goals to his game.

Along with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Jesus is one of the few locks in my FPL side. I will likely double up on the Arsenal attack, keeping the fixtures in mind, but who I go for between Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) will probably be a late decision.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Antonio Conte has transformed Tottenham Hotspur into a formidable outfit and their attacking numbers after his appointment were up there with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. I really want to invest in one of their wing-backs but the situation is a bit murky: Matt Doherty (£5.0m) was the only player not to come off the bench in their last pre-season game and Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) looks like he still needs to build some fitness. I am not convinced about the viability of a three-premium setup and really want to include at least one of their attackers, so it might have to be at Erling Haaland’s (£11.5m) expense.

ZOPHAR’S CURRENT FPL DRAFT

I will be back again next week with my thoughts after the final pre-season games and the Community Shield.

In the meantime, we have been churning out content over at the FPL Wire Youtube channel. We have covered the promoted teams, defenders and midfielders so far, with defenders to come later this week.

        Looks very good.

My only suggestion would be Haaland to Kane simply because you have no Spurs attack and they look sharp after a preseason with Conte. However, you'd then have the problem of no Haaland! It's impossible to cover every base and as long as you're happy with the gaps you've chosen to leave then that's a great team.

    Edersen,

    Haaland, Jesus

    (Forster, Tomi, Pereira, Forss)

Everyone looking for underpriced players are sniffing around Neto and Bailey. If they're underpriced, at best you can hope for them to be worth around 6.0 - 6.5 realistically. That's under 120 points a season.

Think the real value is in players priced 7.0 and above who are undervalued.

If Wilson stays fit and has Trippier's delivery all season? 9.5 striker for 7.5

If Nunez fires? 11.5 striker for 9.0

If Sterling recaptures his form? 12.0 mid for 10.0

Kulu carries on his form from last season? 10.5 mid for 8.0

I appreciate that these are bigger gambles than a 4.5 or 5.0 player, but if you get it right then you've essentially got another premium and their real term worth increase is a larger increase than anyone around 5.0

      1. seamusseamus
        • 11 Years
        4 years, 1 day ago

So that puts him around 6.0 - 6.5 real value.

It's probably only relevant to people who are putting Neto and Bailey in their teams because they feel that they will be missing out on a bargain, but you can just accommodate someone who is a guaranteed scorer with potential to jump a few price rungs. I think the likes of Bailey and Neto should only be included if you are seriously short of funds and looking to fill a sub spot or the 4th place in an otherwise strong mid.

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 1 day ago

I can't speak for other people but I think Neto is an absolute gem, if he stays fit I'm expecting him to better his 124 point season

This This and this again. I don’t understand why so much time is devoted to the entire season. First 5 or 6 games due to fixtures the likes of Neto or Martinelli are reasonable gambles. You’ll be wild carding by game week 8 or 9 and again in 17.

It’s a bit of a sprint until the World Cup.

As long as you have a good first playing sub and a reliable starter up front then it sounds a good strategy to me.

What I don't like is needing to play two of those 3 every week. I'd try and find a bit of money to strengthen the options there a little so you can have reliable starters and maybe keep Neco or Andreas for when you really need cover for a bad fixture.

      1. AC Yew
        • 7 Years

Yes exactly the issue i'm not keen on having to play 2 out of 3 weekly. I will try to see if I can upgrade one 4.5 to give me a forward line of Jesus Wilson 4.5

I may not have explained myself to well. The one striker plan isn't anything I have a problem with. I've done it before several times. I'm just a bit worried with who you will be forced to play instead, and that's not really relevant to the lack of strikers.

Instead of trying to find 3mil to go 4.5 -> Wilson, you could find 1.5mil to go Neco-> 5.0 and Tomiyasu-> Gabriel maybe. That would make your first 11 steiner and more reliable, a consistent choice for first sub (Andreas) plus if any of your defenders do have an awful fixture, play Andreas ahead of them.

Not certain. New setup against Bayern looked like Pep wants Cancelo to play RB and a left footer at LB to allow the wingers to push in and all of them providing passes or crosses in for Haaland. That's why they're pushing for Cucurella.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years

If come GW1 they haven't got Cucurella, and Laporte is still out, the backline can't really look other than Cancelo -- Ake -- Dias -- Walker. At some point Walker will be vulnerable, but can't say when?

        1. Zimo
          • 7 Years

Agreed. I don't particularly like City's clean sheet chances against West Ham to start with though. Newcastle and Palace are also good sides that could score. And Walker has zero attacking threat. Ake would end up being a better choice.

Could be that Pep ends up playing Ake LB even when Laporte is back and Cancelo RB. It's too risky for me

Wondering if 3x premiums is too much?

    Henderson 4.0

    TAA Cancelo Tripper Justin Jonny

    Salah Kdb Bailey 4.5 4.5

    Jesus Kane 4.5

If Bailey can viably return then this is great.

      I'm going with Salah, KDB, Son & Jesus but my compromise is a 5.0 5.0 4.5 4.5 4.5 defence.

    Alisson
    Trent, James, Cancelo, Trippier,
    Salah, Mahrez, Martinelli, Neto,
    Kane, Jesus

    4, Neco, Andreas, Taylor

Above was Ederson & Diaz vs Alisson & Mahrez, Mahrez is my punt that will go one of two ways!

Bailey as first sub and Raya in goal
    or
a 4.5 as first sub and Mendy in goal.

      Better than I expected.

Strange that lack of Jesus who I expect to do well is my main reservation

Looking at this too for interest only
Raya Ward (if no Schmeichel replacement.
      Ricardo Neco Jonny dunk Patterson
      Son Salah Bailey DaSilva Andreas
      Haaland Kane Jesus.
Both of us could get away with it.

I already put Danny Ward in. He is still better choice than any other 4.0m goalkeeper.

Well the simple answer is no- and they probably don't really need to with Ward and Iverson

That's weird- he was playing in their friendly v Preston a few days ago- came on as sub.

I was sure I had seen him listed as a 4.5 keeper but disappeared!
