With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is former FPL champion Simon March, who talks through his latest Gameweek 1 plans.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

It’s not often we’re presented with a genuine game-changer in FPL but, this season, I think we might actually have one. Because of the break for the World Cup after Gameweek 16 and the unlimited transfers that FPL managers will have available to them before the restart, playing an early Wildcard is a more viable option than ever.

With this in mind, I almost feel like we owe it to ourselves to approach the opening Gameweeks as aggressively as possible. With my team, I’m intending to approach the first half-dozen Gameweeks of a season in a way that I might normally approach the final six Gameweeks of a typical campaign. Not only does that mean that I’m focusing disproportionately on players with good fixtures during this period but, also, that I’m willing to be less flexible in terms of team structure and take a few more risks than I might normally do, given the handy bailout option that the first Wildcard presents if I get things really wrong.

Of course, I’m not 100% committing to a Wildcard in Gameweek 7 – I’ll have been able to switch out a third of the squad by then just using free transfers – but treating the first six fixtures like a mini-season is the kind of low risk/high reward opportunity that I love in FPL

With all that said, here’s my FPL draft for 2022/23.

Goalkeepers

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

I’ve gone for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0) in goal due to his fixtures and Arsenal’s demonstrable strength at the back, which we might expect to improve further with the addition of William Saliba (£4.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m). In addition to clean sheets, Ramsdale has a tendency to collect bonus points (14 last season, second only to Liverpool’s Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who managed 15).

My current back-up goalkeeper is Brighton’s own back-up, Jason Steele (£4.0m), because it offers cover if I go for the ‘downgrade’ of Ramsdale to Brighton’s number one, Robert Sanchez (£4.5m), to save money at some point down the line.

I’ve seen enough FPL now to be convinced that two £4.5m goalkeepers is the optimum strategy (provided you pick the right ones, of course) but, since I’m focused on getting everything possible out of the opening six Gameweeks, I’m shelving that approach in favour of trying to maximise the points I can get out of them and, for me, Ramsdale offers the best value route to doing that. I just have to hope he doesn’t get injured in that period.

First draft. No Cancelo for me, think Dias is also very good choice. Other then that any major changes? Too much City?

    Ramsdale Olsen
    TAA Dias Dier Jansson Burn
    Salah Mahrez Kulusevski Fornals D.Luiz
    Haaland Jesus Greenwood

After watching the community shield I don't believe Mahrez will start. My choice of the mid priced City mids would be Foden.

I think De Bruyne, Rodri & Silva will start, the other two slots would be from:
              Mahrez
              Foden
              Grealish

              Which two?

Hopefully both Mahrez and Foden. Grealish can drop deeper if needed.

Burn is a bit of a risk. Botman is pretty much nailed on to start so safer bet to get him than Burn - as it's between Schar, Burn and Lascelles for one spot

I had to sacrifice Cancelo in my current draft too, but not sure about Dias/Walker. Obviously they should rack up the CS even with their injuries, but at that price I think I'd rather go for someone like Perisic or Digne & just take my chances with no City defence initially.

Transfering Neto to Bailey raises two possibilities:

    A) Robbo + Neto
    B) Diaz + Bailey

    X) Tripper + Neto
    Y) Perisic + Bailey

Stick with AX, keeping Neto, or go for one of B or Y?

    Bottomed...

Will Nunez take some of Salah's Points?
KDB is likely to kill it this season

    a. Salah, Kane & Mahrez
    vs.
    b. KDB, Son & Nunez

    Ownership:

If a. outscores b. then you stay in the mix

If b. outscores a. you fly up the ranks

    Getting increasingly settled on my team now after making the decision to not have my 3rd striker as someone who plays. Currently looking at;

    De Gea, Steele
    TAA, James, Cancelo, Trippier, Williams
    Salah, Maddison, Rashford, Neto, Andreas
    Kane, Jesus, Greenwood

Thinking of transferring out De Gea gw3. Other decision for me as a Newcastle fan is whether to have Bruno G in my team - this is my first draft without him...

    1. FPL Elephant

I’ve had Bruno in many of my drafts but apparently he could be playing deeper than last season so I’m going to wait and see.

I personally wouldn’t want to be planning a goalkeeper transfer when there could be bandwagons to jump on!

Yeah, exactly re Bruno - it;'s why i've let my head overrule my heart. Shelvey is injured, so likely Bruno will sit deeper. Also looking ahead at potential signing of Maddison which might impact how much he gets forward.

Think you're right re keeper. Change to Ramsdale it is!

Apparently Almiron has been playing well in preseason. Is he an option instead of Bruno G?

Almiron has had a brilliant pre season and he looks like he'll be starting RW for us - until we sign someone new, which we seem to be trying desperately to do.

Also, as much as Howe has improved us as a team and individual players, i'm not convinced Almiron is actually any good after a couple of years of watching him run around a lot but ultimately be ineffective.

He's available as far as I know...?

Not sure he's a decent option in FPL though. His role s now more of a midfield enforcer - can't see him getting many goals or assists.

I've talked myself out of picking Bruno G. He was brilliant for us but likely to be playing bit deeper at start of this season as Shelvey is injured. So Bruno G likely to sitting in front of defence and not bursting forward as much (especially if we do sign Maddison).

Still think he'd be good value for £6m and get decent points, but t be better spent elsewhere

Could be a massive season for him. If he stays fit, with potential for assists galore if can link up well with Haaland as well as his own goal scoring threat.

I'm slightly unsure on him early doors but once city start adapting their game to suit Haaland (which they didn't do in the community shield), i imagine he will haul quite regularly

I am hearing a lot of commentary on podcasts etc about KDB going to kick off yet I don't see him in many teams. Problem with KDB is you never know when he will kick off and haul. Think to have KDB you need to keep him long term

See some mention of starting with Kane and then switching to Haaland GW2 in a premium hokey cokey. Whilst I'm not saying it could work well it can backfire badly aswell. In 20/21 season I started with Son and sold in GW2 for Rashford in a pre-planned move only for Son to score 4 goals against Southampton....Doh!

Taking your full squad into consideration, i'd go option A as think that gives you a better balance. I'd be thinking about Zinchenko and Walker though and looking to change them

Why does Chelsea want another right wingback with Reece James onboard? Backup?

      They're injured enough.

League and Champions League plus World Cup games too.

Nooooo. But why? With his attacking output and stats? Logic to that? His stats matches TAA.

He's done as a wing back, his hammys can't cope.

Who do we think is the best 4.5 GK for the first 1-6/7 gameweeks?

All much the same really at that price point. Looking at whoever plays and whoever is likely to get save points. In that regard, Meslier potentially stands out a bit but a £4.5m keeper is what it is.

With Cucurella out of the picture, we can be confident Walker starts most games right? I don't mind if he's dropped the odd game at his price.

Should start 3/4 games before City buy another full back.

    A) Robbo and Gabriel

    B) James and Perišić +0.5m

B means Mount can become Saka or Bowen too.

A, mainly because it looks like James will start at RCB. But I am getting tempted by Perisic now

Yeah, if i keep Robbo over James can't afford Perišić over Gabriel.

        Or space for Saka etc.

    I'm torn at the mo:

    A)
    Travers/Sanchez
    Trent/James/Cancelo/Ait-Nouri/N. Williams
    Salah/Mahrez/Martinelli/Mount/Neto
    Darwin/Jesus/Greenwood

    or

    B)
    Ramsdale/Steele
    Trent/James/Robbo/Cancelo/Ait-Nouri
    Salah/Martinelli/Neto/Bruno/Andreas
    Kane (Haaland wk2)/Jesus/Greenwood

    Thoughts?

Go with A if you prefer it.

Bournemouth seem to be weaker now than they were in the Championship so i wouldn't be going near Travers anytime soon. Midfield looks better in Team A but personally i want to start with Kane or Haaland as its easier to downgrade/jump on someone else if you need to

Can I get your thoughts please?

    Ramsdale
    Trippier - TAA - Cancelo - Robertson
    Martinelli - Salah - Bailey - Mount
    Jesus - Kane

    Gazzaniga - N.Williams - Andreas - Archer

B because i'm not convinced on Rashford yet.

Especially if Sancho isn't fit then is it Elanga in that set up?
