With Gameweek 4 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) almost upon us, we’re once again getting tips and advice from our top team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is FPL Milanista, who is ranked 50th in our Hall of Fame and has posted overall ranks of 473rd and 1,547th in the last two FPL seasons. He is also a nine-year veteran of the Fantasy Football Scout site.

The FFS Pro Pundits 31

Gameweek 3 was not free-scoring but it was one that we can learn a lot from. One of the most important Fantasy Football traits that must be carried by any successful manager was grossly illustrated here – patience is a virtue.

It is always said that a person who can wait for something without frustration is possessing a very useful skill and that is exactly what you need in FPL. Owners of Ivan Perisic (£5.5m, 12 points) and Marcus Rashford (£6.3m, ten points) will understand.

However, instead of being distressed by past events, we shall keep our minds focused on what is happening next. A lot of social media talk has circulated about how badly the premium defenders failed in Gameweek 3 and, alongside the suspended Kalidou Koulibaly, we see Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Reece James (£6.1m), Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) amongst the five most transferred-out defenders.

So is this a logical move? Not really. These four premiums are exactly the ones in my own squad and I haven’t even considered letting any of them go.

Even if I was Wildcarding today, they would certainly remain in there without hesitation. Each is playing at home in a favourable Gameweek 4 fixture and we all know how explosive they can be on their day. Let’s just look at Perisic’s haul and hope that this weekend will bring similar rewards for these.

Premium defender stats

Additionally, here are some relevant stats to determine if we are being just blinded by their past historical FPL points or if they have simply been unlucky of late.

Alexander-Arnold, as always, is still dominating all creativity stats among defenders throughout the first three Gameweeks, with his 1.15 expected assists (xA), eight chances created and two big chances created top of the list.

In GW5 I will own both KDB and Haaland but in GW5 before the GW6 deadline, Haaland is bound to leave my team.

Those two home fixtures look delicious.

Not a bad strategy to be fair. I think Haaland will get his first benching v Notts, but if he does start you’ve got all bases covered.

It is not set in stone yet though. GW4 is going to be a crazy GW.

Decent plan. Haaland - Darwin? I'm also looking at Diaz & Haaland ➡ KDB & Darwin once rotation bites. If City had a softer UCL group I might have tried to keep him longer but I expect he'll start at least 4/6

I don't know which way I want to go yet. GW4 could possibly give me more clarification of what happens in GW5.

So who knows what is going to happen.

Right now, GW4 is all that matters at this point for me.

Put it this way, KDB is my focus right now but I still want to see how the player which I already own gets on in GW4. If he bangs, my plan changes again.

So my OP is the plan for GW5 based on current data but I do not want to book in players, just yet.

When so many defenders are must-haves, it kind of dampens the appeal of must-have players.

At some point you need to trade value for points.

Any idea what to do? Have 2 FTs and 0 ITB.

    Mendy (Ward)
    Robbo - TAA - Cancelo - Trippier - Neco
    Salah - Martinelli - Saka - Bailey - Andreas
    Haaland - Jesus - Greenwood

Obviously would like to get Bailey out before he drops. Also Robbo and Saka dropping but they have fixtures and not keen on losing them yet. (Last change for both)

Players I would like to get in: Toney, Zaha and Leeds attacker. Mostly Toney.

Right now just going to do Bailey to DaSilva because don't have any other good ideas.
Maybe lose Haaland to get Toney and upgrade Bailey to Zaha?

Even if Dasilva starts, which isn't a given, Frank loves making a ton of subs, so his ceiling is around 60 odd mins. His two goals were also extremely low xG.

Andreas is on for 90 plus set pieces.

Think people are seeing him more drop into defensive midfield than taking up attacking positions. It's maybe one to monitor if he is getting into fewer attacking positions for assist potential.

Does he justify the price if he's getting no attacking returns? Maybe with him being nailed amongst Pep roulette and his BPS for passes, he is, maybe he isn't. I'm happy to keep and watch.

I think there's a chance, but a small one. Iverson performed superbly midweek, but I think Rodgers will stick with Ward and try and boost his confidence.

You drop him now and his confidence is shot, and his market value plummets.

Chose 1 for this week only:
    A) Gross, RJames, Trippier, Robertson
    B) Luis Diaz, Perisic, Saliba, Meslier

    Thanks

Very nice. The minor-est of minor critiques? Andreas looks such a good sub, seems a shame to go for a 4.4

I do actually have 0.1 itb now from iversen’s price drop, could now afford Andreas so thanks!

Actually no I don’t 🙁 would you rather have Andreas or neco?

Andreas. Neco's kind of like a fun lottery of a sub with his upside, but too much risk of 0pt-ers for me. Andreas' set piece delivery has been so impressive, and he's getting bonus for 1 assist in high scoring games, so I feel like he's a good bet for 5-7pts quite often

I like it, but I'd still want TAA and James in there. Is there better value in going 442? Toney to 4.5 could give you a backline of Cancelo TAA James Dias for example but that is pretty template

Perisic over Dias is nice as well

Yeah upgrading my 4.5 mid to Rodrigo meant I had to drop James and taa down, could do Toney to 4.5 yep, gives me 0.8 spare too

Could you go Sanchez/TAA James Cancelo Perisic/Salah Rod Gundo Marinelli/Jesus Haaland and have saliba Andreas 4.5?

0.6 short unfortunately so would need to move saliba to a 3.9

Only way round it would be to go

                Sanchez Iversen
                Taa cancelo James perisic neco
                Salah gundo martinelli Rodrigo 4.4
                Haaland Jesus 4.5

                Weak bench is the issue

is there a playing 3.9m defender? Probably not worth if it not as leaving yourself short on bench

Honestly those Europa away trips for Man Utd will be awful. Cyprus and Moldova are some distance and then Sociedad is going to be a tough affair. Arsenal have it comparatively easier!

PSV Eindhoven, Bodø/Glimt, Zürich. Some lovely away trips for the gang.
