Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundts PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

Let’s all just pretend that Gameweek didn’t happen.

A sea of red arrows, tales of woe and shaking fists as the weekend provided little joy for many of the FPL world with the lowest average Gameweek score of the season (45).

It’s led many to question the unquestionable, such as whether Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is now surplus to requirements? Even though he has 38 points already to his name – odd times.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Green arrows at the top and the bottom of magical mini-league with FPL Harry, Mark Sutherns, Finn Sollie and Geoff Dance all hitting the high score of the week on 55 points.

In his debut season amongst The Great and The Good, this is the first time Harry has reached the summit, as Fabio fell down the mountain due to a little too much faith in the Egyptian King.

Harry’s transfer in of Ivan Toney (£7.2m), for a hit, proved a move of genius as the Brentford Bee stung the Leeds defence with a hat-trick, before taking to Twitter to goad those managers who sold him.

Mr Sutherns, another to benefit from Toney, was awarded a green arrow of 680,000 places and Finn Sollie was the remaining owner of Ivan, he is now the only one of the group yet to suffer a red arrow this season.

Meanwhile, Geoff had a slightly more up and down weekend as he had sold the Brentford striker, so must have looked on in horror during Saturday’s action, but he was soon in a better mood as his Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) Wildcard pick saw him bounce back on Sunday.

TRANSFERS

The full in’s and outs of the week are listed below:-

  • Az – None
  • LTFPL Andy – None
  • Ben Crellin – Reed (Groß)
  • Fabio Borges – James (Gabriel)
  • Finn Sollie – None
  • FPL Harry – Harrison, Toney (Rodrigo, Archer)
  • Joe Lepper – Zaha (Rodrigo)
  • Geoff Dance – Darwin, Longstaff (Toney, Rodrigo)
  • FPL General – Groß (Rodrigo)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Henderson (Ramsdale)
  • Mark Sutherns – Gibbs-White (Rodrigo)
  • FPL Matthew – Williams (Perisic)
  • Neale Rigg – None
  • Pras – None
  • Suvansh – Darwin (Archer)
  • Tom Freeman – James (Perisic)
  • Tom Stephenson – Sanchez (Ramsdale)
  • Zophar – Dunk (Perisic)

Harry’s hit was the pick of the transfers this week, Geoff and Suvansh’s early move for Darwin Nunez (£8.9m) perhaps shows an eagerness to shake things up a bit and many appear to have lost faith in Ivan Perisic (£5.6m) with three of them moving him on ahead of the European schedule.

There was a bit of Nottingham Forest love as a trio of tricky trees were traded in, obviously, Mark led the way with Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m), FPL Matthew gave himself money to spend by dropping Perisic for Neco “haul incoming” Williams (£4.1m) and Magnus went with Dean Henderson (£4.7m) between the sticks.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

  • Ward (14), Sanchez (9)
  • Alexander-Arnold (18), Cancelo (15), James (10), Cucurella (9), Dunk (6)
  • Martinelli (18), Andreas (18), Salah (17), Luis Diaz (9), Gross (8)
  • Jesus (18), Haaland (17), Archer (7)

The template looks rock solid although I suspect to see some movement in the next few weeks as Gameweek 9 Wildcards are prepared and we see some short-term punts beforehand, hello Kieran Trippier (£5.2m).

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) will be warming up on the sidelines ready to join the squad as his fixtures turn a lovely colour in a couple of weeks and he seems to score regardless of the opposition.

As for this week, the only change was Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) coming in for Perisic despite his previous misdemeanors, The Great and The Good are nothing but a forgiving bunch.

WHAT IF?

This weekend was cruel, but just to pile on the agony I thought it a good time to bring out the What If Machine which effectively calculates what would’ve happened if you had left it well alone, so no transfers or changes to your captain. The results are below, and you can check out your own score here.

Some good news for Az whose tinkering has paid off, gaining him an extra 45 points, based on an effective Wildcard, it’s just a shame his starting 15 was so bad.

Finn Sollie is not far behind having made up 36 points, and he has yet to play his overhaul chip. His astute moves for the likes of William Saliba (£4.8m), Robert Sanchez (£4.7m) and of course Toney have all paid dividends.

Elsewhere, Magnus should have just left well alone, although much of that is his lack of patience with Rashford who he started with but then jettisoned before United became good again.

CONCLUSION

Do you hear that rumble? That’s the sound of Wildcards being prepared, with FPL General the next to break from the herd, as it a week to forget.

Rank is, of course, irrelevant right now, unless you have a good one, so stick to your plan, as another week is another week of information and there are another bunch of mistakes yet to be learnt from.

Anyway, that’s all from me for and remember don’t have nightmares.

Would it be crazy to captain Gross this weekend?

I know Haaland has been in insane form, but Spurs will play tight at the back.

Bournemouth struggle to defend set pieces, so I could see Gross hauling.

Yeah just a little crazy haha

I do not believe in Spurs defence at all, I think they are rather poor, sit deep or not…..City and of course Haaland are scoring a few there for sure

I’d normally agree with this but Conte will tighten up imo, and play not to lose the game. Nevertheless narrow City win imo

Yeah I guess so, not expecting a 5-0 win or anything haha, but I do think the way City are playing right now, they’re looking an awful lot better with Haaland and he will be too much for that defence. He’ll be my captain anyway, hope he does well.

I’m not sure if I’d captain him but I do expect them to win it too. Having said that, Conte is an absolute tactical beast in such games. I wouldn’t be surprise if somehow manages to get a draw or even a win

I am captaining Jesus or Salah. Not Haaland this week and maybe Son the following week to mix it up a little. Not as if you don’t get Haaland points. Just don’t get them twice if he hauls.

    Fellow Manutd fans,

What would our front three be when Martial is back?

If not for Rashfords form I would have thought Sancho and Antony on the wings and Martial through the middle, but not sure now.

Martial is the only fwd we got (not counting Ronny) who has played well since the start of the preseason, hence I feel he is a sure starter when fit in that no9 role.

I'm not an MU fan- but you may need to worry about Martial any time soon due to injury

From an EPL perspective that's an eternity

Plus, I don't think your coach wants to mess with the team that is winning. They just side stepped a crisis. Rash plays well with Anthony, Sancho, Elanga, and Bruno.

Who are your best "differentials" for the next couple of GWs?

    Possibly coming in: KDB/Sterling/Sinisterra/Aaronson/Rashford/Solanke
    Possibly making way: Salah/Gross/Bailey

    Sanchez

For anyone that watched the Sevilla - City game - how did Cancelo play today? Was he playing more advanced and getting into the box more? Looked threatening going forward? Or was his returns from the same inverted midfielder role he's been playing most of this season?

I was encouraged by the highlights at least. But he was on the right(?) for a change so I'd be interested in hearing how that went from those who saw the match.

Yes was very dangerous, almost like a right winger.. Sevilla atm are one of the worst teams so don't pay much attention to this game... If you have Cancelo def. keep, he would be against son next game so don't expect anything from him in this game tbf.

      Caveat :

      1. Sevilla is not English team.
      2. First time Cancelo play as RB this season. Maybe play as LB back if Walker fit.
      3. Have to show more in PL with 7.0 price tag. His first attacking return is not actual assist.

      Still a good choice tought.

Not much to overhaul here. You've already covered the main problems a lot of us have in deciding what to do with Liverpool assets or restructuring to go 3 up top.

I'd probably look to start losing the Arsenal assets after this gw though.

For gw7 I'd probably do Struijk to James and play him over Cancelo

Thanks again for your input. After our previuous discussion, I was more or less convinced of buying James this week, but the poor show from Chelsea in Zagreb was not an ideal audition for James. But yes, that move is towards the top of my list.

I am waiting for the audition of Trent (and Liverpool) against Napoli. Buying Liverpool players just before their difficult fixtures (WOL, che, BHA, ars, MCI) may not be the best idea when they are not in form. But, we all know what Trent and Salah can do. I am considering Sterling + Struijk to Trent + Bowen (attacking easy fixtures of West Ham) -- that's another move towards the top of my list.

    I am on a WC

    A. Diaz
    B. Trashford

Have: Oddegard, Martinelli, Gross, King Kane, Erling the Great, and Toney

My gut says never trust a MU player, those boys are garbage. But seems they are clicking right now and Diaz might just rotate these days with Carvalho and Jota now back

I wouldn't buy either to be honest. May be Rashford if forced to choose one. I would look for players who will become the next template. I predict Bowen.

6 games and he just have 1 on target.

For comparison, Haaland and Mitrovie get 12.

For mids , Rodrigo didnt play 2 / 3 games get 6 same as Martinelli.

Not for me. Bowen and co, looks lost.

Quite poor from all attackers. Not organised. Soucek have many shot from his head of course but not really dangerous one.

Bowen run to good position to score but still cant find the net.

Not for me even the fixtures looks good until he score some and support with stats.

Camzy said 'better late than too early' 🙂

Everton few seasons back always have good fixtures early season. Every man and his wife buy Digne only to see Digne laught at them back. No clean sheets , no attacking return , just 1 point every game. Sometimes got own goal too.

Sometimes form comes bacause of fixtures. Sometimes not. I prefer to wait and see except that player show some good stat already like Zaha. Good stat even play against big team. Will buy him a.s.a.p.

I have only looked at extended highlights. He had about 5 goal attempts against Chelsea and Spurs, including a volley on target from outside the box (similar to some of his last season goals).

Disclaimer: Biased opinion. I am thinking of buying him, because of his kind fixtures. In many cases, form follows the fixtures for above-average players.

I know it's not the done thing to actually comment on the articles, but I enjoy these ones, especially on those occasions when I have most of the Great and the Good covered. Surprisingly so, in this case. Thought my 43 with a crazy high template rating wouldn't be that far ahead.

My plan is looking like- WC GW 9.
1FT this GW and 2 next week before WC.

What move would you make this week which will be a 2 week punt.
Next week probably Salah + Archer out

Maybe Gundo -> Sinisterro or Trossard?

    Sanchez.
    TAA, Trippier, James, Saliba.
    Salah, Diaz, Gundo, Martinelli.
    Haaland, Jesus.
    Ward, Cucarella, Andreas, Archer.

I have enough money to swap out sterling for KDB/Son next week if chelsea look horrid vs fulham. Would my team look a bit compromised if i do so though? Or does it look fine? Considering im going to ignore TAA until GW12 im pretty happy with it tbh. Note that it's currently sterling and Patterson in place of Dalot and kdb.. those would be my transfers next week.

    Sanchez (Ward)
    James Trippier Saliba (Dalot Patterson)
    Salah KDB Martinelli Gross (Andreas)
    Haaland Jesus Toney

Plan was to upgrade gross to Bowen/Maddison in GW 9 with the spare cash.. but I'm thinking I might as well keep him until injury and bench him in GW 9, 13 and 14 for Andreas instead.

Yup. That would give me some spare cash to work with too. I've been very careful with gaining team value and every 0.1 has helped. Cheers. Only big hole is obviously taa/Cancelo.. but I'm willing to roll the dice for a few weeks. Alternatively i could use the cash i have to upgrade Saliba to Cancelo (if sterling looks good)
