Ahead of Gameweek 7, we take another look at which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players are on penalties, corner-kicks and free-kicks for their respective clubs.

Over one in five of all goals scored in the Premier League last season came from set plays, with penalties responsible for a further 7.8%.

Our Set-Piece Takers tab rounds up our estimated pecking order but these regular shorter-term recaps look at what’s happened in the Gameweek just gone.

GAMEWEEK 6: KEY OBSERVATIONS AND NOTEWORTHY CHANGES

  • Two players scored both a free-kick and a penalty in Gameweek 6: Ivan Toney (£7.2m) of Brentford and Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m) of Brighton and Hove Albion. We’d seen Mac Allister on direct free-kicks before but Toney didn’t chance his arm once in 2021/22, so this is a new feather in his cap. Bees boss Thomas Frank said Toney had been pushing to play more of a role from direct free-kick situations:

“The free-kick, obviously, wow. It’s something he’s been working on and he’s been saying he wants to take more free-kicks, so I’ve told him he needs to practice. He has started practising and it’s a classic Ivan goal where he shows his fantastic technique, you notice how well he connects with the ball with his right and left foot, but also his cleverness to put it to the keeper’s side.” – Thomas Frank

  • Neco Williams (£4.1m) hasn’t taken a corner or indirect free-kick since Gameweek 3, with fellow new signings Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m) and Renan Lodi (£4.5m) now more heavily involved at dead-ball situations for Nottingham Forest.
  • Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) delivered another five corners in Gameweek 6, meaning that no Chelsea player has taken more corner-kicks than the left-sided defender this season. Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) matched Cucurella’s total against West Ham, with another regular taker, Mason Mount (£7.6m), on the bench. Reece James (£6.0m) continues to take indirect free-kicks but, since Gameweek 1, not corners.
  • No player has taken more corners (29), successful corners (10) or direct free-kicks (four) than Kieran Trippier (£5.2m) in 2022/23.
  • We’ve now seen the joint-cheapest forward in FPL, Sam Greenwood (£4.4m), take at least one corner, indirect free-kick and direct free-kick in 2022/23. His total game-time amounts to just 28 minutes, however.

Which is the best Leeds midfielder pick for this gw?
    A) Sinisterra (in form)
    B) Aaronson (looks good at home)
    C) Harrison (we know him better than the other two)

    Ok I was wrong.

    Welcome to Chelsea, Graham Potter.

Crikey. Not sure the club has the patience for it, but Potter loves to rotate and has the squad for it. His attacking style will hopefully get these attacking players firing.

It’s a shame, I think Brighton have an immense chance at Europe this season.

That would suck for Brighton. Potter is easily the biggest reason why Brighton are playing so well. I'd rather see what he does at Brighton this season and move to Chelsea for 2023 season.

Chilwell is obviously talented but Cucurella featured a lot under Potter. If he does got to Chelsea, do you think Chilwell gets ousted even more or Potter plays Cucurella at LCB and Chilwell finally gets his place at LWB.

well he shifted Cucurella from lwb to lcb to play Trossard at lwb. That might suggest that Cucurella was lacking something going forward, that a more attacking player possesses

      1. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

No I think its more complex than that. From what I saw, Cucurella at LCB still played really advanced & held width almost like a left full back, and linked up brilliantly in attack with Trossard's unconventional inside-forward type of WB role. We could see something similar with Chilwell making a lot of runs into the box

    GW8 Wildcard vs GW9 Wildcard

Let's get the usual caveats out the way... This is all team dependent, it also depends on your read on the strength of teams and fixture swings, it also depends on your risk profile as a manager and what your ideal wildcard looks like...

The time to plan your wildcard is right now imo. Before the end of this deadline, you should have a plan on whether to WC in 8 or 9 because your transfers will change depending on which gameweek you want to dead-end into.

    Pros for GW8:
+ Fulham/Mitrovic's fixture swing begins here
+ Spurs have LEI in GW8 which can be attacked.
+ Liverpool's bad fixture swing starts in 8 so a good time to jump off until GW13 if you don't want TAA + Salah.
+ Newcastle have BOU and a great run of games which can be a perfect time to load up.
+ Earlier than the curve so you can get some price rises ahead of time.

    Pros for GW9:
+ The international break in 9 is a more natural time to do it because of potential injuries.
+ Arsenal's fixtures swing in 9 not 8 if you think Brentford away is a targetable fixture and want to keep triple Arsenal for that game.
+ Chelsea's fixtures swing in 9 for the better if you want to invest in them - Sterling, James etc
+ Liverpool have BHA if that's a game you want to attack and if you want to keep the safety of TAA + Salah on WC.
+ Leicester have a great run of games from 9 if you want Maddison & Co.

For me, the strengths of a GW8 wildcard are greater than 9 for my specific read/team. I don't think Brentford is a game to hold triple Arsenal for. I don't really like Chelsea assets even with their good run of games. I don't want TAA + Salah for this run of games with European congestion and middling form. I want Spurs players for GW8 - I might even triple with Son, Kane, Perisic - I don't really want Leicester players, and I want Fulham/Newcastle players ahead of the curve.

Yes, it is better to have a wildcard over the international break just in case there are injuries, but I think the pros of 8 outweigh 9 for me.

The last kicker is that I don't have enough transfers to put out a sufficiently strong XI in GW8 in a deadend strategy for that week. In GW7, I can target Leeds vs NFO and Brighton vs bou with my 2 FTs quite naturally. Even if I save 1 FT for this week, I will still struggle to remove Diaz, Salah, James, Cucurella, TAA for Spurs assets in two transfers assuming I want to target the Leicester fixture in 8 without needing to take hits.

Anything I've missed here? What WC strategy are you using?

Only red flag I see is Son. Believe me, betting on him for the first 4 weeks was my biggest mistake and he shows no signs of getting any better. Afraid to say he’s just too inflated when you could get better returns with just Kulu

I also bet on Son to start the year and it didn't work. However, I don't agree that he's showing no signs of getting any better.

I genuinely think he looks more of a goal threat than Salah this year. He's just short on confidence at the moment. All it might take is one goal and he'll start delivering like he did last year.

There's just too much uncertainty with Chelsea for me. They might change the entire system and suddenly the assets you banked on like Sterling/James are placed in weird positions with decreased threat. We still have transfers after the wildcard as well. I think a lot of people see the wildcard as the end of the journey but it really isn't. It just sets a platform from which you continue to evolve your team.

          • 9 Years

I think it's safe to assume that given his system at Brighton he'll continue with wingbacks at Chelsea, especially with the talent of James & Chilwell (who will both want to nail England spots ahead of the WC). Sterling is only going to play as a winger if not ST.

    Who to drop for Trippier?

    Saliba, Neco or Patterson?

Saliba would save me the most money, but also a decent player to keep
Neco is attacking but in a poor defence
Patterson - is he nailed, or just playing due to injuries?

Patterson is nailed, wouldn’t be surprised if Lampard keeps that back 4 after the Liverpool game - essential to the team rn.

Only issue is the other two are brilliant and have better fixtures. Maybe Saliba over Neco - but Patterson is the weakest link

Rashford probably injured going by him holding his hammy and going off. I'd reluctantly bench Cancelo if not
