The FFS Pro Pundits 34

The news in terms of fixtures has finally emerged and I’ve pulled the trigger on the Wildcard. Outside of three Liverpool players, which most FPL managers have, I also owned Reece James (£6.0m), Marcus Rashford (£6.6m), Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) and a potentially injured Kyle Walker (£5.1m), which forced me into activating the chip.

It was a fairly straightforward decision for me but for those that are on the fence due to being able to field 10 or 11 players, there is merit in waiting for more information. The pros and cons of Wildcarding are covered in detail by Tom in this excellent article.

Let’s come to where I am with my current draft and the decisions that I’m grappling with. I would like to heavily caveat that this is only my current ‘tinker’ and I’m far from reaching a conclusion as I only made the decision to Wildcard on Tuesday.

NEWCASTLE PICKS

FPL new signings: Who is Newcastle forward Alexander Isak?

The Wildcard picks that I’m confident about are largely from Manchester City and Newcastle United. Nick Pope (£5.1m) stands out to me as the goalkeeper of choice. The reason for having him is simple: Newcastle have conceded the fifth-highest number of shots but are second lowest behind just Tottenham Hotspur for expected goals (xG) per shot conceded. It is just the perfect recipe for him. I’m comfortable in doubling up on the Magpies defence with Kieran Trippier (£5.3m), who offers points potential on both sides of the pitch. Even in Gameweek 6, he supplied six chances versus Crystal Palace – and that creativity will also help him rack up bonus points. Newcastle United have kept six clean sheets in their last 10 matches at St James’ Park and their next four home games are against Bournemouth, Brentford, Everton and Aston Villa.

READ MORE: Pope and Trippier rise up The Watchlist

My third Newcastle United player at the moment, who I’m not fully sure about, is Alexander Isak (£7.0m). The reason he is in there is that his next three games are against Bournemouth (h), Fulham (a) and Brentford (h), all of whom are in the wrong half of the table for expected goals conceded (xGC) in the league so far. Newcastle have shown the ability to do well against weaker opposition as they racked up close to 2.0 xG against Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanders and 2.5+ xG against Crystal Palace. I am a little worried about Callum Wilson (£7.2m) being close to fitness but I think that the impending return of Bruno Guimaraes (£5.7m) and Allan Saint-Maximan (£6.4m) only means good things for the team in general.

READ MORE: FPL new signings: Who is Newcastle forward Alexander Isak?

If I don’t go with Isak, it will be for either Ivan Toney (£7.2m), who is in the top 10 in the league for non-penalty expected goal involvement (xGI) and is now seemingly the best free-kick taker in the world as well as the best penalty-taker! Harry Kane (£11.4m) is an alternative third forward pick as a short-term premium punt to attack the Leicester City fixture, as the Foxes have now conceded 23 goals in their last 10 away games and sit in the bottom three for xGC so far this season. If that is the case, I’ll likely punt on Saint-Maximin in midfield.

KEEPING SALAH IN MIND

FPL Gameweek 7 hot topics: Salah's form, Leicester's defence, three up top

All of us on The FPL Wire are on a Wildcard this week and we also shared our thoughts on the chip in our Gameweek 8 episode, which I highly recommend.

Morning, folks. Five press conferences scheduled for today, including Spurs (times below are in BST):

    11am - Hasenhuttl
    1pm - Gerrard
    1.30pm - Rodgers, Cooper
    2pm - Conte

Silva caught me on the hop with a Wednesday presser but there doesn't seem to be much team news beyond Robinson being a major doubt + Solomon/Wilson still being out.

The other eight managers with GW8 fixtures are up on Friday.

    Ward
    Trippier - Perisic - Cancelo - Walker*
    Martinelli - Andreas - Dasilva*
    Jesus - Haaland - Mitrovic

    Sanchez - Salah - Diaz - James

    1 FT.

Walker is still a risk for the weekend and Dasilva and maybe Perisic is not nailed on.

    A) Salah -> Son (and field 11 with Walker OR Dasilva)
    B) Salah + Walker -> KDB + defender (bench Dasilva)

The 4-3-3 threemiums draft with Bailey to fill the spot seem wrong to me.
You either go 3-4-3 with 2 premiums
Or 3-4-3 with 3 premiums if you can risk losing Cancelo

I was building WC drafts last night with a friend and stumbled upon the differential to end all differentials.

Kurzawa. 0.0% ownership new signing at left back for Fulham at 4.5m.

Robinson is injured, and Kurzawa is a French international who's played over 100 games for PSG. Fixtures are there for him. Insane differential. Also has an eye for goal and gets one every 10 games or so from LB.

As far as backup defenders go, why not take a chance on a fun pick with some attacking upside? We'll only really need him for GW8, 11 and 12 when he has nfo BOU AVL as his fixtures.

    1. Shark Team
      • 8 Years

Robinson is good at LB can’t see the reason he is benched after the international break

Injury could be bad and keeps him out. Kurzawa also is a great player. I just wouldn't be surprised to see him do some damage and if it's a backup defender slot, there's not that much to lose since he sits on the bench a lot.

Just an idea though. Obviously there are much safer options like Coufal or Patterson or Neco etc.

I like Fulham, the way they play they have built a strong team and with a good GK like Leno they might start keeping cleanies because of their easy fixtures coming up

It’s definitely different, and it has its appeals with Fulham full-backs getting forward quite a bit under Silva. Like him for the fixtures you mention, though I guess many will go with Neco, Patterson etc for extra funds. I like the idea though!

    3. The Mentaculus

Not sure if he'd be fit to start this week though. Wasnt even on the bench v Spurs & his only game this season was 44mins in a friendly on 15/07. Mbabu didn't look too covincing at LB though so maybe they take the chance & see how long Kurzawa can manage

New signing Layvin Kurzawa could be in line to deputise should Robinson fail a late fitness test.

The France international arrived on loan from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day but missed out on the Tottenham defeat, with Silva saying that Kurzawa was not in the right condition to play.

However, the Fulham head coach believes the intervening 15 days since the end of the transfer window has helped his new recruit.

“In that moment he wasn’t fit,” he said. “He had just signed. Kurzawa was a different situation than Vinnie, Daniel James, players who had a pre-season, who played friendly matches or official matches. Kurzawa didn’t have a pre-season with his team-mates (at PSG). He was apart from the group. Of course it would take time after the Tottenham game. It’s been 15 days and now the situation is different. It’s up to me to decide (to select him).”

Ah, the name Kurzawa brings back some fond memories of him taunting the swedish team after scoring in a qualification game to the u21 euros. Sweden turned the game around and went on to win the whole tournament.

Good article. Like many others, I’m contemplating similar dilemmas.

Think I’m going for two premiums, with Kane and Haaland up front as ASM can potentially cover the Newcastle attack in a way Spurs midfielders can’t at the moment because of rotation risks.

The other big one for me is Trent or James? What are people’s thoughts there? I was set on losing Trent but wonder if he could prove to be a relative (and I mean relative) differential if lots are losing him? James has the fixtures and the extra money could come in handy too. Tricky one

    A) Hit WC

Is really KDB worth it over Kane/Salah/other premium? You will never captain him if Halaand is not injured and you will never vice captain him since you want that on someone in an other game for obvious risk minimizing reasons. You might aswell pick Foden or other cheap City player that prob will get you more points per mil.
