FPL Focal previews the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action, taking a look at who the bookies think are the best bets for goals and clean sheets as well as monitoring the latest transfer trends.

Make sure to also check out G-Whizz’s weekly Hot Topic on fixture and clean sheet odds when it appears, which also looks back at how the bookmakers performed in the previous Gameweek.

GAMEWEEK 20: GOALSCORER ODDS

Starting with the anytime goalscorer probabilities, what I’ve done here is combine the Double Gameweek 20 fixtures so that the players listed above have a chance of scoring in either match.

The odds always assume that the player starts, so some individual judgement is required here. For example, with Julian Alvarez (£6.0m), it’d be a surprise if he starts both. Erling Haaland (£12.2m) is top, given an 80 per cent chance of scoring at any time. His effective ownership will probably be pushing 200 per cent, with lots of Triple Captain chips active.

Harry Kane (£11.6m) is second on the goalscorer odds with 55 per cent. If it wasn’t for Haaland’s ridiculous season, we’d probably all be talking about how incredible and essential Kane has been, with 15 goals and four assists. His Double Gameweek consists of Arsenal and Manchester City but it should be noted that he’s on four yellow cards, which is risky considering how heated the North London derby can be.

Absent from Manchester United’s cup squad in midweek, ten Hag said it was just a rest for Anthony Martial (£6.6m). He’s been given a 51 per cent chance of netting in either match, whilst team-mate Marcus Rashford‘s (£7.0m) rich vein of form has seen him score in six consecutive matches. If you don’t own him, getting him probably needs to be a priority.

The Man City midfielders continue to be a real headache. Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) may be the best of the bunch, given his recent form in both the league and cups. Pep Guardiola is notoriously impossible to predict but, in a Double Gameweek, there is an increased likelihood that he’ll get at least one start.

GAMEWEEK 20: CLEAN SHEET ODDS

Like before, I’ve combined the Double Gameweek fixtures to provide odds for keeping at least one clean sheet. Man City are top with a 60 per cent chance, although defensive rotation makes it difficult. With Joao Cancelo‘s (£7.2m) recent benchings, perhaps the best pick is John Stones (£5.4m).

However, if you have a route to Ederson (£5.4m), he’s the most nailed-on pick. A triple-up of their players is worth it, considering Double Gameweek 23 is also on the horizon.

Chelsea have been given a 43 per cent clean sheet chance, according to the bookies. It looks quite generous, considering their form, but a strong response at Stamford Bridge wouldn’t be surprising.

There’s a 40 per cent chance that Man United will keep one during their double, making Luke Shaw (£5.1m) a stand-out option. I’d swerve away from Diego Dalot (£4.7m), as he’s only just back from injury and was withdrawn early on Tuesday night as a precaution.

Erik ten Hag’s side could also have a Double Gameweek 22 if they and Leeds United avoid needing an FA Cup fourth-round replay.

No names leap out at Crystal Palace and their odds of 34 per cent. They’re all low ceiling, with Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) the best defender and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) in goal.

Tottenham’s odds are very low, given only a 28 per cent chance of a clean sheet in their double. Matt Doherty has started every game since the restart and put up a 15-pointer last time. For only £4.6m, he could be an under-the-radar pick if there’s a similar purple patch to last season, pre-injury.

He’s not completely secure of future starts but Spurs fans will argue he’s way better than Emerson Royal (£4.9m). Maybe he comes off around the hour mark and banks an early clean sheet.

Rock bottom this time is Fulham, given a 14.5 per cent chance of shutting out Newcastle, followed by Bournemouth’s 15.5 per cent odds away to Brentford.

GAMEWEEK 20: MOST TRANSFERS IN

No surprise to see Rashford as the most-bought player, with 370k transfers. I’ve been weighing up whether to get Kane or not. It’s not a great double and there is a yellow card risk.

However, thinking long-term, I just cannot keep going without owning such consistency. So I may as well make the jump now, in a Double Gameweek. He could easily follow that up by putting a couple past Fulham, who are the worst in the league for expected goals conceded (xGC).

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£7.2m) is the second most purchased forward, which is surprising when you see his tough game alongside the two of slightly cheaper Martial. If you’re looking to free up funds for Kane, the move from Bukayo Saka (£8.1m) to Martin Odegaard (£6.7m) is a nice transfer that I’m considering.

De Bruyne has been transferred in by around 150,000 managers. Unless Liverpool get a Double Gameweek 21 announced before the deadline, he’s a good hold for the next five Gameweeks.

GAMEWEEK 20: MOST TRANSFERS OUT

Looking at the most sold assets, Leandro Trossard (£6.8m) is top due to being out of favour with Roberto De Zerbi. Brighton and Hove Albion’s top scorer is very talented and it’s a surprise but £4.5m forward Evan Ferguson has come in and done well.

If it wasn’t for these Double Gameweeks, we’d be talking about Ferguson a lot more as a potential cheap enabler that is both starting games and returning.

Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) and Cancelo are among the most sold, which is logical based on the transfers we’ve discussed, as is Darwin Nunez (£8.9m) making way for Kane. Mitrovic appears in this list too.

Centre-back Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is expected to be out for a few weeks and, further upfield, it’ll be interesting to see if Liverpool can eventually get back to their best now that Cody Gakpo (£8.0m) has arrived.

Any other fixtures besides the Liverpool one also dropping into GW21?

All the others seem unlikely now because there are better times to play 'em with more days of notice for the fans

The Liverpool vs Chelsea double-bill will be because it can get difficult to schedule 'em later due to FA Cup and Europe, making DGW21 rather convenient... But they might still delay that too. We'll probably get an announcement today

Probably that. I think there could be three maximum.
Brighton V Palace was postponed separately and is an extra game in hand. Arsenal may also struggle to fit in their game v Everton who I think already play on FACup QF day so possibly that one too.

I love it when the "experts" tell us Harry Kane's a good pick.

200 goal Premier League striker with a DGW might be someone FPL managers should look at. Cheers!

Which is the best of Bernando, Grealish or Gundogan for the Man City DGW. Can't stretch to Mahrez.

Also would anyone consider playing Bueno (WHU) over Ben White (tot)?

                1. Out of those I prefer Grealish.

                2. WOL switched to a back 5 last night using Ait-Nouri and Semedo as WB and Bueno was benched. I think they will revert to a back 4 but there is always that element of uncertainty.

Certainly one of the tougher decisions that you'll encounter with this squad depth. I think I agree on Darwin, perhaps marginally over Martinelli. Decent fixtures for all the SGW players, so perhaps it would help to try to make impartial predictions on how the games will go (personally I think BHA will win 3-1 or something like that, hence Darwin)? Or to order them from highest expectation to lowest (rather than the other way around)?

Nah, have Patterson and Bueno, not worth it at this stage.

Rivals will play Almiron and have Odegaard instead of Martinelli, so might actually bench Darwin and play Martinelli.

                  1FT 2.9ITB.

                  Kepa
                  White, Shaw, Trippier
                  KDB, Rashford, Mount, Martinelli, Almiron
                  Haaland, Darwin
                  Ward, Cancelo, Greenwood, Patterson

                  1)A) Darwin to Kane
                  B) Cancelo to Botman

                  2) Bench or Play Cancelo if A

Why Botman? If you're using him to free up funds to get Kane in I understand that, but if it's just a single transfer it would be better to get Schar.

Just think long term for 0.6 price difference Botman is the slightly better pick. Especially as I have White as another defensive option. I have the money to go straight to Kane but will Liverpool get a DGW and is making sure I've got 4 good defenders the better move?

Yes he does look a threat but is it worth that much funds over Botman. I could consider him but thinking of getting Kane and bench Cancelo might be the better move this week anyway as clean sheets are hard to come by right now.

0.6m isn't "that much" this season, imo. Cheap options all around; options who've outperformed the likes of KDB, Salah, Son, Sterling, Bruno, Darwin and Vardy for a while now

Botman to Schar is one of the few places left in the entire game where a more expensive asset is almost guaranteed to outscore the cheaper one

See my suggestion below. I'd get Kane for free next GW after Schar and Mitoma for a hit this GW

Chelsea's attack stats are horrible. Mitoma is among league leaders for the same stats (see big numbers article)

It has been hard finding defenders who keep a clean sheet so goal threat more important right now IMO. Schar has that. And personally I'm playing 3 at the back with White and Bueno as backups as I don't think defence is where the points are at the moment apart from those who score or assist.

Staggered moves with one hit total:

Cancelo to Schar, Mount to Mitoma, Greenwood to Kane

Improves your squad and addresses multiple issues at once, hopefully with some change for a later Patterson upgrade to Doherty

Or Cancelo to Schar for free now, then Mitoma and Kane for a hit in GW21. Three transfers, 2 FTs, sets you up long-term

Not seeing a lot of TC deployed this gw. What are people’s thoughts? Tough fixtures but we know that Haaland is likely to feature heavily in both fixtures.

Better DGWs ahead, and Haaland isn't the only valid TC candidate anymore. We've got Rashford and Kane, then maybe Salah or the very bold Trippier. There'll be many minor DGWs in which a player with very good form faces two horrible defences

Personally more concerned about getting the highest chances of two hauls with that powerful one-time chip than I am about ensuring I use it on Haaland

Wasn't really considering it but he did get a Hatrick against Man United in the return fixture and Spurs defence hasn't been great plus people pointed out there is a good amount of time between the fixtures and he has just had a good amount of rest. Will look into it more when I figure out my actual moves.

Mainly put off by City's current form & Pep's emphasis on slowing things down in the name of control. Like the Spurs fixture for him but I think the Man Utd game will be pretty tight unless Utd nab an early goal

I wasn’t considering it myself until I looked into it a little more. I guess it’s a classic risk v reward scenario. Yes city aren’t in great form but halland can score against anyone and the knowable right now is that he’s not injured, nor are there any other fixtures in between the two matches this gw.

That's the thing about this week. All 15 of my squad are fit and regular starters, and only one of them doesn't have either a dgw or a good fixture (Mitro). BB & TC certainly are potential options.

I'd rather have it up my sleeve for the rest of the season and use it on someone with better DGW fixtures. I'll also be captaining Haaland anyway this week so won't lose out too much. Whereas for me the most exciting play is to use it on someone who people don't even own, let alone will captain. Risky but if it pays off can produce absolutely massive swings, like the KDB triple captain last season.

Yup - also, he racks up BPS at a faster rate than other City defenders so if he does secure a clean sheet in a low scoring win he could be good for BPS

2/ Salah & Nketiah to Kane & Mahrez for -4?

                    1. I'd trust KDB minutes more then Mahrez and Nketiah is in good form and saves you losing 4 points.

Bit of a risk with Mahrez as Pep Roulette.
Better to do 1 I think.

Mahrez didn't start (or come on) last night. Surely he's fairly nailed for at least 120mins over the double

Is the consensus that Rashford captain instead of Haaland is a risk, or is it looking like a safer bet after last night?

Its definitely not safer as Haaland scored a hatrick and 2 assists against United last time out

True but I'm looking purely at recent form. City are struggling big time.

It's a risk in terms of ownership, not in terms of form, how do you like to play the game?

Well currently I have it on Rashy but my ML opponents don't have him so I guess that's a differential in itself, and they're probably likely to captain Haaland. Having said that City have two tough games, whereas United have Palace so still very tempting to keep it on him.

If you think Rashford is more likely to score more points than Haaland then captain him. Don't worry about any consensus. Trust your instincts.

I like his form but I am not sure I trust United to not bottle it against City, who will be wanting to make a statement, even though their form is poor.

It's about 50-50 at the moment, hence wanting to see what others are thinking about the best option.

Just something for those who are still influenced by player prices when making decisions this season:

On the FPL transfers page, sort by price

See what's happened to almost every asset on the first page (top 30)

I only count 5 or 6, maybe 7 who are anywhere near the current template of the best players playing for the best teams with the best fixtures

All my decisions are now fuelled by form, stats, starts and fixtures. If a player is 4m more expensive than another, but the cheaper one is bossing him for stats/points and faces a great fixture, I'll bench/sell/not buy that 9m or 12m asset

The prices are set by people who lack crystal balls. They are all guesses based on available info at the time of pricing. That info can change after just 4 games of actual performances on the pitch
