The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from two of Saturday’s Premier League fixtures are discussed in our latest Scout Notes article.

Manchester United v Crystal Palace and Newcastle United v West Ham United are the games in question.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture this season.

FERNANDES ON PENS?

One of the most-asked questions of the week concerned who was first on penalties at Manchester United, and we got an answer on Saturday afternoon – we think!

As called by Lateriser in his article earlier this week, it was Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m) who stepped up from the spot to convert after the Red Devils were awarded a seventh-minute spot-kick at Old Trafford.

That was the first time that the Portugal international had scored from the spot since 2020/21.

This was the fourth penalty United have been given this season, and there have been four different takers:

TakerWon byWho else was on the fieldWho wasn’t on the fieldResult
Europa League group stage (Sep 15)RonaldoDalotFernandesRashford, MartialScored
Gameweek 9 (Oct 2)MartialMartialFernandesRashfordScored
FA Cup third round (Jan 6)RashfordGarnachoFernandesMartialScored
Gameweek 22 (Feb 4)FernandesRashford (for handball)RashfordMartialScored

So Anthony Martial (£6.5m) is the only current United penalty-taker who hasn’t been on the field for any of the other spot-kicks that he didn’t take. He did, however, win that Gameweek 9 penalty himself and immediately grabbed the ball.

Getting him on the pitch (more of which below) is another matter altogether, of course.

Fernandes and Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) have each taken a penalty when the other has been on the field but, as Lateriser discussed in his article, there may have been a charitable reason why Fernandes relinquished those duties in the FA Cup third round.

MARTIAL INJURY LATEST, CASEMIRO BANNED

Martial was – surprise, surprise – absent from the United squad on Saturday afternoon, with another injury keeping him out of action.

There was no mention of him in the post-match presser but before kick-off, Erik ten Hag said of the Frenchman:

“He had a setback from the game when he returned. He thought he could build up, but he dropped a little bit back. We have to wait, we have to be patient not to force it.” – Erik ten Hag on Anthony Martial

Casemiro (£4.9m), transferred in by over 100,000 FPL managers ahead of Friday’s deadline, will now be missing for the next three games, keeping him out of league action until Gameweek 26.

The midfielder was sent off for violent conduct midway through the second half of the win over Palace, with United going on to lose their clean sheet.

The shut-out prospects of Luke Shaw (£5.2m) and co may take a bit of dent with the Brazilian spoiler out. First for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBIs) and second for successful tackles among midfielders since his Gameweek 10 full debut, we saw how open United were at Arsenal last week in his absence.

Marcel Sabitzer (£5.0m) at least looked promising on his own Red Devils bow as a late substitute.

RASHFORD TRIPLE CAPTAINCY

Above: Effective ownership stats for United players by rank tier

Over 550,000 FPL managers made Rashford their Triple Captain in this Gameweek; that’s over 100k more than backed Erling Haaland (£12.2m) in Double Gameweek 20.

Over one in five (21.55%) of the top 100,000 FPL managers used this chip on Rashford.

It’s already advantage Rashford backers with half of Double Gameweek 22 still to go, with his current tally of 12 points four more than what Haaland managed in Gameweek 20.

The Palace game panned out as the underlying stats form guide suggested it would: Rashford betters every single other FPL asset for goal attempts (seven) in Gameweek 22 so far, while Fernandes is joint-top for chances created (four). Doubters of the Portuguese midfielder can claim a hollow moral victory while licking their wounds: outside of his early penalty, he didn’t have a single shot all game. ‘Penandes’, indeed.

GORDON’S ALIVE?

Newcastle United conceded their first league goal in three months as West Ham United gained a deserved point on Tyneside thanks to Lucas Paqueta‘s (£5.9m) strike. Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) blanked at home for the first time in over a year as a result.

The absence of the banned Bruno Guimaraes (£5.6m) was lamented by Eddie Howe after the game:

“He’s our difference maker, he’s got that creative flair we possibly missed today.” – Eddie Howe on Bruno Guimaraes

It should be said, however, that Newcastle hadn’t scored a single goal with him on the pitch since Boxing Day. In fact, it could be argued that they missed him more defensively on Saturday.

From having a press-resistant, ball-retaining number six in Guimaraes and operating with a conservative left-winger – Joelinton (£5.9m) – to going with neither against West Ham, Newcastle did look a bit more open and were second best for much of the game.

Replacing Guimaraes in the starting XI, Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.1m) was barracked by some of the home support for his display. Over half of the big chances that the Magpies have conceded (14 of 25) in 2022/23 have come with the ‘luxury’ French winger in the starting line-up – and he’s only started five matches all season. A grossly unfair apportioning of blame, perhaps, but the personnel change did appear to affect Newcastle going in both directions.

While Saint-Maximin didn’t take his chance on a rare start, debutant Anthony Gordon (£5.2m) certainly made the most of his second-half cameo with a lively display. Barely any FPL manager will be bringing in a Newcastle asset now given the upcoming blank in Gameweek 25 but Gordon is one to monitor for Gameweek 27 onwards, given his bargain price.

“I’m really pleased with his debut. Teams when they play us now will make it difficult for us, The onus is on us to break teams down.” – Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon

Callum Wilson (£7.1m), temporarily deprived of competition due to an Alexander Isak (£6.6m) concussion, put Newcastle 1-0 up but there was another blank for the quiet Miguel Almiron (£5.7m). This was Almiron’s second-lowest xGI total of the season (0.05) and he’s not had a single big chance since Gameweek 17 – although he was admittedly centrimetres away from claiming an early assist for Joe Willock (£4.7m), only for VAR to spot that the ball had crept out of play.

More FPL sales will justifiably follow this week but the next two fixtures, against Bournemouth and leaky Liverpool, may be enough to persuade his remaining owners to keep whatever faith still exists.

Above: Premier League teams sorted by mins per expected goals conceded (xGC) in 2022/23

Every season there’s a team (usually Brighton) who look great on the underlying stats front but who don’t translate that into FPL returns.

West Ham are a bit like that in 2022/23. Only four sides have conceded fewer goals than the Hammers (who are also fourth for xGC, above), yet only Southampton (one) have kept fewer clean sheets than David Moyes’s side (four).

The recent return to fitness of Nayef Aguerd (£4.8m) could be key on the shut-out front, with the Moroccan absolutely superb on Tyneside – as was midfield shield Declan Rice (£4.7m).

Moyes mostly going with a more conservative shape (a wing-back system) in the last month also perhaps bodes well for future clean sheets. Budget FPL defenders Emerson Palmieri (£4.0m) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.1m) stand to benefit from this tactical set-up, each starting again here.

“They’re a big, big side. They can put the ball on top of you when they don’t go round you. Nayef had a brilliant tackle. Part of your job is to defend well and we did defend well today.” – David Moyes

See how KDB is today, as someone that has had him since the restart and got rid this week I don't think he's worth the spot in current form. Add to that Pep's comments suggesting he'll be rotated as much as the rest of the batch of mids/wingers that can change week to week and the fact that he left him out for tactical reasons recently and I can see him getting a benching next week

The end is more encouraging- rotation more about busy periods

“However, after an impressive return to the side, Guardiola insisted there are no doubts about De Bruyne's quality, and any rotation is simply to manage City's fixture load.

He continued: "Kevin, always you expect him to assist the ball - but how many assists does he provide that were not converted, don’t count as an assist but really is.”

I'm holding til 25. I think Leeds and Lei represent good opportunities to gain points at either end of the pitch. I didn't watch the match, but reports I've read suggest Shaw was quite attacking? I can see Shaw involvement in goals in both games.

Plus I have other issues in my squad (Moore, N Williams, getting a second MCI attacker for double, Martinelli).

I think so, assuming you can start 3 defenders from New/Ars/Mci over the next couple GWs. Leeds (A) is not an easy CS anyway. Playable v Leicester but seems like maybe they're getting back into their attacking groove with Maddison now

Doesn't Newcastle's BGW25 mean you need cover (assuming you wanna hold those assets post 25) and will struggle to play three from those teams? Especially with many NEW def double-ups. And I'm finding it impossible to predict who from MCI def will play and they've all got a string of single digit returns recently.

Agree Leeds (A) is not an easy CS - and Casemiro out absolutely weakens MUN defence. But I reckon it'll be an open game. What're Leeds like defensively on the wings?

I'm thinking of shifting Shaw to Mings or - if we get any more clarity - MCI defence. Also looking at bringing in EVE defence if Dyche keeps the changes up.

No I can manage GW25 with Trippier & Schär on the bench. Starting Ake, Moreno + (probably) James. Aside from City in 26, Newcastle's fixtures are still pretty good & I'd rather have Schär than Shaw. City defender was a slightly reluctant inclusion but they do seem to be tightening up again now.

Leeds FBs are not that solid tbh. But the way we play with a high tempo & an aggressive front 4 does make it difficult for opposition FBs to bomb forward.

If you were gonna shift him, you could always move Shaw to a Che defender? Chilwell and James on their way back (I think?) should make the overall defence better, and Badiashile could be a cheap and reliable way in to that defence. Mostly good fixtures and cover for 25 and 28.

You're quite well set up I'd be tempted by that move. Alternatively/also White is there's a risk he could get benched?

Won't move for a while but:

    Kepa
    Trippier Shaw White
    Fernandes Rashford Martinelli Mitoma
    Kane Haaland Nketiah
    Ward // Andreas Bueno Cancelo*

White/Martinelli not a great ARS duo currently. Bit of a suspicion White could be benched. To limit the hits I may keep Martinelli for now. At least he got a rest & Trossard looked naff.

Fernandes > KDB/Mahrez likely as FT.
    In addition. Y/N?
    A) Cancelo > Ake (-4).. bench Shaw or White
    B) Martinelli > Saka (-4)

Might've played Bueno actually but the benching he had was annoying.

Feel like Odegaard has been a tad off it last couple of games - though could back into the swing spoon. Both aren't really minutes risks. I'm not sure. Saka more differential/looked a little more dangerous.

    Hi Everyone

Those that wildcarded last week how are you feeling now re points this week and moving forward?

So far I've had a 17% rank increase (57 points so far - not brilliant I know - with DDH, Bruno, Rashford, Haaland and 2 x Bamford still to play) but feel slightly underwhelmed. I know quite a few on here did this last week e.g. The Mentaculus and others.

However, I feel well set up for the next few weeks i.e. 10 for game week 25 etc.

Negotiating the blanks and the DGWs is going to be the interesting part - always handy to have as many chips as possible for those.

As ever, everyone on whatever strategy they are on will claim victory if they do well, while in reality some will do well and some will do badly on every strategy.

On 67 with a big green arrow (+ 28%). Luckily at my lowly rank Rashford's EO is only around 140% so Rash/Bruno/Shaw has been a big boost already. Triple Arsenal attack obviously frustrating but I'm still really happy with Saka/Øde/Eddie going forward. Was a bit concerned about the Moreno benching having moved early for BGW cover but maybe that'll turn out ok anyway since it sounds like Digne struggled. My team is always linked if anyone fancies a nose around.

Nice score so far this week and well set up for the future. I think I was trying to be too clever i.e. DDH over Shaw to give me another player for 25 (goalkeeper) and we'll see later on whether Bamford was worth it!!!

My first draft had 3 Arsenal attackers as well but changed Nketiah to Gabriel due to Jesus. Think with hindsight that was the way to go.

        My squad is:-
        Arrizabalaga DDH
        Trippier, Schar, Gabriel, Ake, Mings
        Bruno, Rashford, Mitoma, Odegaard, Saka
        Kane, Haaland, Bamford

      Kepa | Raya

Ake Trippier Gabriel | James Shaw/Tarkowski/Porro

      Mahrez Mitoma Rash Saka Øde

      Haaland Kane | Toney

      Affordable? Got a WC?

Toney could be Mitro, due to BGW25

...or Gnonto, if funds are an issue

The third striker is unlikely to play in this squad any time soon, but a good one should be useful for blanks, doubles and random rotation among the preferred 7

I'm personally likely getting Mitro for Toney in GW25, unless Joao Felix proves to be golden

Would you do Bruno & Martinelli to Saka and Mahrez for -4?
After this move I would have 6 DGW players in GW23.
I already have KDB, Haaland, Ode & White.
Second option is to get Lewis for free or just save FT.

    What's your Triple-Captain history like?

    16/17 - 31 points - DGW37 (Kane)
    17/18 - 03 points - DGW37 (Sterling)
    18/19 - 03 points - SGW31 (Salah)
    19/20 - 16 points - DGW24 (Salah)
    20/21 - 08 points - DGW26 (Kane)
    21/22 - 26 points - DGW26 (Salah)
    22/23 - 12* points - DGW22 (Rashford)

Sane and Mane were part of it along with a player that blanked in a triple GW. Using it on Kane last year was the first time I ever had my TC return. That's all you need to know.

I think the triple captain chip has been available since a season or so earlier. I remember choosing between alexi sanchez and aguero and BOTH ended up the gameweek on close to 30 points

You're right. The Triple Captain, Bench Boost and All Out Attack chips were all introduced in 15/16.
The late unlamented All Out Attack chip (2-5-3 formation for one Gameweek, often resulting in fewer points than not using it) was replaced in 17/18 by the Free Hit chip.

There was a big debate in FFS in 15/16 about whether it was better to use TC in DGW34 and BB in DGW37 or vice versa. It turned out that those who triple captained Sanchez (25 points) or Aguero (26) in DGW34 fared best.
Unfortunately I triple captained Payet for only 12 points in DGW37 instead.

Oh yes that's right! That the first season I found FFS - it felt like a secret uncovered society!

I triple captained aguero so was actually slightly annoyed when sanchez nearly matched his score in the second game (I think aguero scored lots of points in the first game).

          Ahh, fond memories

Yes. Aguero scored 17+9, and Sanchez 9+16.

There were some mammoth scores that week.
My Bench Boost scored 121, but I think the top score was over 200.

A foggy memory for the most part but two reckless/heroic GW38 punts stand out: Kane for his hat-trick against Hull in 2018/19... and Alexis for his blank against Everton in 2016/17.

17/18 Lukaku (think it was 8)
      18/19 Aguero 11
      19/20 KDB 6
      20/21 Salah 4
      21/22 Salah 28
      22/23 TBD.

Aguero probably the most annoying, 11 points, then off injured after 59 minutes , in the first game of a DGW, could've been a monster haul! Just 1 more minute was another 3 points!

Is this crazy ? Feel like it has a big upside of using 2FT to get more dgw this week and players for 25 also where i can take some punts (Like the look of maybe a Bowen for Bruno) and field a strong 11 - only downside is i ignore my planned Bruno to KDB move

    This week
Shaw + Paterson to Ake + Akanji with 2FTs

    Kepa
    Akanji Ake Trippier White Schar
    Rashford Martinelli Saka
    Kane Haaland
    Ward Mitrovic Bruno Andreas

Mitro Bruno on the bench (both on pens) could outscore Ake Akanji (one fixture v ARS).

Ake Akanji may not have 120 min DGW23 and who knows coming GW25 whether they will continue starting.

      1. FPL_trail_runner
        • 5 Years

Yep true, my initial plan was Bruno to KDB and roll 2FT , then bench just Shaw andreas and paterson.

However gives me much less money to change Shaw and Paterson to decent players in 25
