We assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Newcastle United v Liverpool in our first Gameweek 24 Scout Notes.

The numbers and graphics you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

DARWIN INJURY LATEST

Darwin Nunez (£8.7m) scored his first Premier League goal since November but the good news ended there for the Uruguayan striker, as a shoulder injury cut short his evening on Tyneside.

Darwin’s current and prospective owners in FPL face a nervous wait to see how serious the issue is ahead of Double Gameweek 25 but we may at least find out earlier than Friday’s pre-match press conference, as Jurgen Klopp will face the media both before and after Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

“The bad news [is] Darwin has something on his shoulder. We will see. In that situation I don’t know what he [the referee] whistled there against him, to be honest.

“In the end, he had to go off with a shoulder issue. We need further assessment; I don’t know in the moment. In the moment is it painful, but hopefully it’s just painful and not more.” – Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez

Even if Darwin is out, competition for game-time in the front three has hotted up with the returns to fitness of Diogo Jota (£8.8m) and Roberto Firmino (£8.0m), both of whom got over half an hour to work on their match-sharpness here.

LIVERPOOL’S GAMEWEEK 25 AUDITION

We’ll get another look at Liverpool in the midweek clash against Madrid before Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) take centre stage in Double Gameweek 25, when they face Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The trip to Newcastle was also an audition of sorts ahead of Friday’s FPL deadline.

A 2-0 win against a side previously unbeaten at home all season, with attacking returns for all of the front three and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m), sounds pretty good on paper.

But there are still one or two question marks about this Liverpool side, particularly at the back where they allowed the 10 men of Newcastle multiple chances. The Magpies twice hit the woodwork after Nick Pope‘s (£5.5m) dismissal, while substitute Callum Wilson (£7.0m) squandered a great opportunity, Fabian Schar (£5.2m) nodded wide from six yards and Alexander Isak (£6.6m) blazed over when well positioned. Miguel Almiron (£5.6m) had earlier spurned a clear opening before Pope was sent off.

Liverpool themselves didn’t create much at all for an hour after the red card (a flurry of chances arrived late on) but perhaps one eye was on energy preservation ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League tie.

Onto the positives, though, and the goals themselves, scored by Darwin and Cody Gakpo (£7.7m), were well-fashioned and assisted brilliantly by Alexander-Arnold and Salah.

Liverpool’s clean-sheet prospects still look iffy from week to week but Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) and Alexander-Arnold in particular are starting to rediscover their attacking swagger, with seven chances created between them on Tyneside.

Salah is the big question for many FPL managers ahead of Double Gameweek 25, and there’ll be plenty of column inches devoted to him in the coming days. He didn’t have a single shot in the box against Newcastle, although that’s ignoring the fact that he would have had a gilt-edged chance had Pope not handled outside his area.

WHICH GAME WILL POPE MISS?

Newcastle take a backseat in FPL until Gameweek 26 now, as their participation in the EFL Cup final next Sunday leaves them without a Premier League fixture.

The good news for Pope’s owners in FPL is that the goalkeeper will be back for that Gameweek 26 trip to Manchester City, as his one-match ban for the denial of a goalscoring opportunity will be served in the cup final – hence the lack of a red flag.

The Magpies were uncharacteristically carved open with ease for Liverpool’s two goals but the good news is that they now get Bruno Guimaraes (£5.5m) back from suspension, as his presence has been sorely missed at either end of the pitch.

They also rallied brilliantly after Pope’s dismissal, a sign of the progress made under Howe.

“I thought the reaction to that sending-off was brilliant from the team. I thought we stayed in the game and were competitive, we created chances and I felt if we could get the next goal we had a route back into the game but that never happened.” – Eddie Howe

Newcastle rise up the Season Ticker from Gameweek 27 onwards, with a guaranteed fixture in Blank Gameweek 28 and a very likely Double Gameweek 29 also in their favour.

Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.1m) is one to monitor for differential-seekers, as he was absolutely electric against Liverpool, forcing Alisson (£5.4m) to tip an effort onto the bar and providing the big chance that Almiron spurned. After a rusty return to the starting XI in Gameweek 22, he’s rapidly improved.

Will wait as late as possible for would like some early ideas. What's my best move?
    a) Ake -> Tarkowski
    b) Shaw -> Tarkowski (Get Shaw back in a future gw)
    c) KDB -> Salah
    d) Ake, KDB -> Tarkowsi, Salah (-4)
    e) Shaw, KDB -> Tarkowsi, Salah (-4)
    f) Anything else?

    My team is:
    Kepa (Ward)
    White, Bueno, Ake (Trippier*, Shaw*)
    Saka, Odegaard, KDB (Rashford*, Mitoma*)
    Haaland, Gnonto, Darwin**

You think it's better to sell Ake even though he has a game, and play with 10 rather than sell Shaw and then get him back after gw26 (vs Liv away)?

Why get Shaw back for GW26?

Between GW26 and GW29 he has two away games vs Liverpool and Newcastle and blank GW28

I’m also taking hits this gw & Saka is definitely on the list. I don’t have Nketiah but if I did, would find another way to get Saka in or just sell Nketiah if no other way. You could get another striker.

                      Gakpo is a rotation risk

It will be Bruno, Shaw and Lewis/Bueno. Then replace two of them with Brighton assets by GW25 and do Havertz to Toney for a hit.

I think I'll skip the Robbo move here and save a hit

Bueno might start again, and then could be useful if their GW28 game goes ahead

That's then Gakpo and Trent gone for Brighton assets, and no hit for Toney

    Decent plan?

    25: Shaw & Kdb -> TARK & SALAH(c)
    26: Mitro -> Toney
27: Save FT or get another BRE/BHA player if they don't blank in 28
28: 2-3 transfers to try and get 11 out
    29: WC
    32: FH
    34: BB

    Ederson
    GABRIEL, BUENO, PATTERSON
    ODEGAARD, MARTINELLI, Kdb
    Haaland, Kane, Mitrovic

    Kepa, Trippier, Shaw, Rashford, Mitoma

Thinking of these moves what do you think? 2 FT's

    A. Shaw > TAA
    B. Bruno > Odegaard
    C. White > Tark

Would give me this (10 players)

    Kepa

    Bueno / Tark / TAA

I just don't trust Liverpool, missed the game yesterday but from what the article says (and keeping up with live text when I could) it sounded like they were fairly fortuitous at times and it does sound like Newcastle had a firm eye on next Sunday from the start. But perhaps I'm being unfair to them

      I’m stuck too

Can actually field 3 at the back with walker castagne Gabriel but it’s very underwhelming

      My FT will be

I'm not keen on Salah either, I could get him if I want as I have loads itb but just not keen, but he probably is the only one you'd feel should be nailed from the attack. At least there are a few more options in midfield even if none stand out yet

Tbh I’m more inclined to bring in Watkins for greenwood - the guy keeps scoring and is there through all the blanks

This then only leaves me 6.8 in mid which is at my current thinking going to be neves (means I can switch go mitoma)

But then I’m left with fomo on Liverpool

City and Arsenal goals were almost similar where he got space to run into and one on one with the GK from a tight angle. However Everton will most likely park the bus and not provide much space for him?

                  1. Ze_Austin
                    • 7 Years
                    3 years, 1 month ago

That's possible, yeah. But he's an easy medium-term hold and can still get that running space when Everton attacks a set piece, for instance

I'll take him over Liverpool forwards this GW, for instance. And basically everybody else other than the three I have

Forgot Nketiah. Nketiah over Watkins for me, but most already have triple Arsenal

Would you hold on to him over Toney come gw27? I got Havertz and want to sell him this GW even for a hit 🙂

That's where things get very team-dependent

I have him behind Haaland, Kane and Toney 😀

This means I'd probably just hold Havertz here, hope for a start, and then switch to Toney in GW26

Yeah - all I really want is Taa and Watkins, just can’t see the path

Darwin still seems the most appealing option to me, but even wihout the injury I doubt I would actually go for Kane - Darwin. Have no mids I would sell for Salah, no interest at all in Gakpo. Have a feeling Trent could clean up - but a lot of that us just down to the weakness of the attacks he faces in 25. I wouldn't want in my team longer than that really. So I may well be going in with no Liverpool still

If I had a FWD slot free I'd consider Nunez again (mind he's burned me twice already this season), but he's out of consideration as I have Haaland, Kane and Nketiah for my sins. If Jota and Firmino weren't back I may have considered Macallister to Gakpo as I'm a little unsure on holding onto the former given his consistent blanks but as it is I feel the move may not be worth it with so many Liverpool attackers available and Brighton's double coming up. Looks like I'll be in a similar boat to you

Is TAA worth it for a one week only punt next week?

Will most likely need to take him out in gw26 to free up funds as I already have two 3.9 defenders that need upgrading and looking to attack the double gameweeks in 27 and 29 as well as 25.

I have the same dilemma with Lewis and Bueno and hence if I want to get Salah I may have to sell Kane and leave some funds in the bank to upgrade the 3.9s, and instead I may go for gapko instead of Salah and not sell Kane, and leave funds in the bank to upgrade in future gws. I am currently leaning towards the later move.

I think Gakpo may be a better shout than Salah and would certainly free up money to upgrade elsewhere. I most likely won't captain Salah in any games anyway so will consider Gakpo as an option instead of Salah

Ya exactly, not getting Salah will surely save on a few hits in the future GWs and helps us to upgrade the bench players until the WC.

If Gapko starts both games, I don't see much difference in upside between him and Salah

Depends on your plan with FTs, imo

If this will lead to a hit in GW26 or beyond, I'd just skip

Personally, Estupinan is my top priority. But no point getting him now, and he'll easily replace Akanji in GW26. So it's Schar to Trent in GW25, then Trent to Schar in GW28. Nothing to change in my attack until BGW28 or DGW29

I'll also point out that Bournemouth game in GW27 as a reason to hold Trent a bit longer than 1 GW

What would be your GW26 backline without getting Trent?

Are you making just the TAA move, I have Bruno and don't really fancy getting Gakpo so was thinking Odegaard, but this would mean taking a hit to remove White as already have Saka and Nketiah.

Just the Trent move or I might roll instead

All options are very team-specific at this point

This is part of why I didn't get Bruno for that earlier DGW, but that's long gone now

Maybe the Ode hit is your best option here, but I'm not confident

Have 2 FT and can afford KDB & Shaw to Salah and TAA.

Would leave 0.2itb and I still have Lewis and Bueno to upgrade in defence at some stage. Don't really like Liverpool's fixtures aside from dgw25.

Backline currently is Trippier, Shaw, White, Lewis, Bueno.

Will be taking Shaw out this week as benching Rash, Trips and Mitoma for gw25

Ah, I see. I think Bueno can wait a bit longer, especially if he starts both in GW25

Lewis has to go in GW26, I agree. Like Akanji for me

If it's possible to go from Lewis to Estupinan in GW26 while keeping Trent, I'd still get Trent. If not, maybe Robbo?

    Kepa,
    Tarkowski*, White, Digne
    KDB, Saka*, Rashford, Odegaard*, Mahrez
    Haaland, Kane, Greenwood*
    Ward, Rashford, Trippier, Shaw

    A) KDB to Salah for free
    B) KDB & Mahrez to Salah & Gapko (-4)
    C) KDB & Digne to Gapko & TAA (-4)

    Early thoughts appreciated.

    A. KDB + Shaw > Salah + Tarkowski

    B. KDB + Shaw > Gakpo + TAA

    C. KDB + Shaw + Bueno > Gakpo + TAA + Tarkowski (-4)

    D. KDB + Shaw + Gnoto > Gakpo + VVD + Darwin(if fit) or Jota (-4)

Two options for me I’m thinking…

    A) Bruno & Shaw -> Gakpo & TAA for free with £1.1m left in bank

    B) Bruno, Shaw & Ederson -> Salah, Gomez & Leno for -4pts and £0.1m left in bank

B would free up my 3rd city slot and leave me with a Leno/Meslier rotation which actually looks ok, don’t expect many clean sheets but had it with ederson

Just catching up on match of the day.

Graham Potter is a gift, he cost Chelsea £20m and they’re going to sack him at a cost of much more.

Mudryk £100m on an 8 year contract. Hilarious.

    Terribly run club. Farce.

Where will the BRI vs CRY fixture move to if approved? Gw25?
Thinking of KdB, Kilman to Salah, Gomez dgw25, and maybe get Estupiñan from gw26

Highly unlikely to be GW25. Palace already have a fixture at the weekend and Brighton have a fixture in midweek of GW25.
