We’re reviewing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) fortunes of all 17 surviving teams from the 2022/23 campaign, continuing here with Brentford.

Attacking and defensive team stats from last season are analysed, while we also take a look at the individual players who posed the biggest goal threat and carried the most assist potential.

Each club will also be previewed nearer to Gameweek 1 as we look more closely at new transfers, pre-season results and fans’ expectations.

Only subscribers can read the full article; those wishing to sign up to our site and continue reading, as well as see a list of the benefits that Membership brings, can do so here.

BRENTFORD IN 2022/23: ATTACK

TotalRank v other clubs
Goals scored587th=
Shots40818th
Shots in the box29911th
Shots on target1558th
Big chances917th
Expected goals (xG)57.897th
Non-penalty expected goals (NPxG)51.588th

Brentford’s underlying numbers were mostly consistent with their tilt at European qualification and ninth-placed finish.

The eye-popping figure is the 18th ranking for overall goal attempts. Perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised, though: the Bees famously place a lot of emphasis on underlying data, so the fashioning out of high-quality chances and the absence of low-percentage shots may be by design.

Thomas Frank’s side could mix it with the big boys, with more wins coming against the clubs in the UEFA Champions League qualifying spots (four) than against those finishing 17th or lower (three). In six of their eight fixtures against Arsenal, Newcastle United and the two Manchester clubs did they register more than 1.0 xG – no mean feat.

Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo both reached double figures for attacking returns against sides finishing in the top half.

TeamGoals from pens/set plays
Brentford25
Manchester City23
Spurs21
Fulham, Liverpool20
Arsenal, Newcastle18

Another line of note is that no other top-flight side could match Brentford’s total of 25 goals from set plays and penalties. Over 43% of the Bees’ Premier League goals, indeed, came from this source.

Frank’s troops were ranked second for xG from set plays (18.51).

Above: Brentford’s goal threat home (left) and away (right) in 2022/23

There is no shock that there’s a slight drop-off in underlying numbers away from the Brentford Community Stadium; most teams aren’t quite as attacking on the road.

But the positive news to report is that the Bees were still ranked ninth for xG and eighth for big chances in away games, so the relative threat remained fairly consistent.

For me, there's potential for a double or even triple if the prices are right. Ant 4.5 defender is straight in, maybe one at 5.0m. If Jensen is 5.0m he could be a decent 5th mid and then there's Mbeumo - a MID at 6.5 or 7 would be very tempting.

Bournemouth sign Justin Kluivert. This is a player who has played for non-relegation threatened teams in a number of European leagues (Leipzig, Valencia, Nice, Roma). It says something that he is joining a relegation-threatened club in the PL.

You can understand why some of the non-PL big boys (Juventus, Barcelona etc.) wanted to join a European Super League when you see the money being thrown around the PL.

You mean Valencia weren't relegation-threatened last season? Seems like a casual take from someone who doesn't watch a lot of La Liga. Their squad quality had been declining gradually and many expected them to struggle massively last season. And they only secured safety on the final day last season.

Mount is worth atleast 80M. Why would you sell him to a rival for 50M anyway?

Chelsea should have kept him but now that Mount has his mind made up for leaving they are in a sticky icky situation. ManU can squeeze the price down. Hopefully the whole thing goes south

Price reveal order was determined by previous season's position in EPL

              1 July 2022: 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 [MCI ARS etc]
              2 July 2022: 2, 6, 10, 14, promoted
              etc

So if the same order is followed this year we could get MCI and Liverpool reveals day one, and ARS day two.

FPL Launch Date is expected to be in the week beginning 3rd July, according to a Man United leak and a statement from FPL about seeing us again in July.
Price reveals should start a few days before the launch, and these could start as early as 29th June. The actual launch is likely to follow within a day of the final price reveal.

FPL has been updating to prepare for the new season since 21st June, and last year that took 5 days.
After they've finished the update, they'll probably give us a chance to pre-register and confirm or update our personal details, so as to speed up the process of actually entering our teams on launch day.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Pickles and falafel? This can't be a thing. I won't have it. Nope.

        Have at you....

They put chips in the falafel as well, you only need to eat once a day!

I refuse to believe it. Didn't happen.

They’re enormous, and only cost about USD3-4!

I did the transfer planner on fpl team with the new prices this is the team that I came up with

    Leno
    TAA/White/Gabriel
    Rashford/Fernandes/Ødegaard/Olise/Madueke
    Haaland/Ferguson

    Olsen/Kilman/Zanka/Stansfield

    Maybe I need Salah haha

I made the same squad with FPLTeam and LiveFPL and the former is 6.0m more than the latter. HUGE difference. I'll just wait for the real prices.

Yup. More than enough opportunity for tinkering and rating once we have prices.

Pretty sure that slugs are totally poisonous and too toxic to consume, whereas snails are rendered perfectly edible fried in garlic butter.

You have a lot to learn, Teddy.

You need to sit down and have an oversized, cheap falafel.

Is any slug-related content in the works? It's been a while.
