I don’t really have a compelling argument grounded in analytics and statistics, but whilst I consistently see people suggest Chelsea will be last season’s Arsenal in terms of value, I truly disagree with this idea and instead pinpoint Liverpool assets, especially their attackers. After all, they did finish 5th.

By improving their midfield considerably, the attackers should flourish consistently.

Gakpo and Diaz at 7.5m are likely to start and they’ve already shown real glimpses.

And if Jota becomes first choice, I can easily move as I have 1.0m in the bank, whilst Darwin would be a straight swap.

Really tempted by Darwin tbh, and have had a few drafts with Soboszlai instead of the 6.5s. One to watch in preseason for sure.

I like Diaz. Good FPL player when on the pitch. I think Liverpool will be rather tricky to predict though. You can make changes but by that point, you gotta assume you've missed out on points by picking a player you feel the need to sell and using a FT or hit on it. Still, maybe some educated guesses will feel better closer to the deadline. I think Liverpool might still be one of the harder ones to predict, even after pre-season evidence

Gakpo is a lock in my team. I think he's the most nailed of the bunch (except Salah), massive haul potential, and doesn't take up a MID spot.

I think it's only a matter of confidence this year before Darwin starts scoring for fun. Geezer gets so many good opportunities and finds himself in those positions so often now that it can't be put down to luck!

I get what you mean about Gakpo too though and not losing the MID slot. Toss of a coin for me nearly (if I go three up top)

Darwin could definitely kick on this year and become indispensable, but for the start of the season at least I believe Gakpo is first choice, that's why I'm happy to start with him

I'm of the same mind. I suspect Darwin could be the big surprise package of the season. But he won't be nailed at the start, not until he shows a bit of consistent form. But I'm poised to jump on him as second striker; by losing Jesus, I'll be able to bring in an Arsenal midfielder or defender.

All righty then, it's my second attempt. Feels very uncomfortable being just a chisel or two away from the template. Usually prefer to go a bit wild, but I think this looks pretty good.

    Fabianski (Areola)
    Estupinan Botman James (Chilwell Bell)
    Son Fernandes Saka Martinelli Mbeumo
    Haaland Jesus (Woodrow)

Also considering Rashford, Odegaard, Havertz, Maddison, Diaz, Foden, Gross, Wissa, Fergusen, Enciso and that's about it for now. Ideally looking for bench defenders who can rotate with Chelsea defs for their few poor fixtures (and of course cover if they are broken). Looking forward to pre-season!

Apart from West Ham keepers, it’s a really great team.

Triple Arsenal attack is differential, so is Son/Fernandes, and so is James and Chilwell.

I prefer to go 4.5 + 4.0 on the keepers so it makes sense to go for the same team, and that that team I'm less likely to want to double up on elsewhere, like Brentford and Brighton, but I'll reconsider once I have more info later on. Cheers for feedback Nasherbo

I get why you do two 'keepers from the same team, however I've gone for Pickford & Areola. I really think this needs to be the year that Fabianski is swapped to Cup rotation, but we never know with Moyes (I hope I'm right).

As well as the above, you MIGHT want a Bowen & Paqueta double up for GWs 9-17. Although, I say that with hope as an actual WHU fan.

Thanks Zenith, very nice response! Why Pickford? He rotates poorly with Areola

        1. Zenith UK
          • 9 Years

I initially picked Pickford for my set and forget 'keeper. I just think Areola will get the nod over Fabianski this year (or I hope he does), so, for me, it makes sense to have him as my 4.0 "fodder" GK. No plans to rotate really, just want to maximise potential returns ( both i points and team value). If my guess is correct that is, if it's wrong, baring injury I don't care about leaving Pickford in.

Might have cause you a little bit more of a headache but I hope not, you are right though, the weeks you look at Pickford are 5 & 9 in the first 10 weeks and WHU have MCI & avl in those GWs. I do think Everton will be woken up a lot this season after last and with Dyche at the helm defensive solidarity should come pretty quick (especially with a full pre-season under his belt)

Cheers. Not a fan of Pickford, myself, though he could come good in FPL. I will also look at Leno and Trafford (when he's added to the game), as they rotate better with Areola, or even maybe going big on Martinez as I assume Villa's defence improved under Emery (not sure though) and he has pen save potential. I'll try not to let my anti-Pickford (pro-Ramsdale) agenda affect my FPL choices 😀

Yeah and my other thought process, which wasn't the most resounding argument, is that even if Everton haven't learned and Dyche does his usual defensive soak up and absorb technique at least you will hopefully get a bundle of save points (and then maybe bonus points) from Pickford - who also isn't the worst pen-saver either?

Seems reasonable, although I'm not sure Dyche is really all about soaking up and absorbing! Pope did get plenty of save points at Burnley, though, I think, so I'd be interested to find out more. Maybe they were relatively good at keeping clean sheets and limiting good quality chances. I'm sure it varied a lot season-to-season

Worryingly for you I have gone on a fairly similar structure. I also have no Liverpool
Except I have gone double Everton keepers, gone slightly heavier at the back (no 4.5) - similar structure n midfield (but slightly heavier) and lighter in the forwards Ferguson instead of your Jesus pick.

      Pickford (Virginia)
      -
      Shaw-Zinchenko-Estupinan (James - Baldock)
      -
      Rashford-Fernandes-Odegaard-Saka-Gross
      -
      Haaland-Ferguson (Surridge)
      With 1.0 itb

The bit that stands out for me in your picks are starting James and benching Chilwell - interesting approach.

You seem to imply you are not far away from a lot of teams but I think by you not having ANY Liverpool plus those two Chelsea wingbacks you will see big points differences one way or another. It only takes two or three major changes to the general consensus to have a divergence in points.

Not much response to the big shock of the draft - the two Chelsea defenders. I'm dismayed to see I'm not the only one with 2 in my draft. However, what I've done is stick (for GW1) two 4.5 central defenders on my bench, so I can see which is the regular starter. I've gone for a 2nd one at the expense of Botman, whom I don't see starting in my squad for 4 gameweeks.
In contrast, you're investing a lot in your two, so you need a lot of faith that Chelsea hit the ground running. Could well pay off.

My brother's birthday tends to coincide with the open weekend of the PL and he always does a golf tournament on the nearest Saturday, this year we're teeing off a week earlier for whatever reason, but the point I'm getting too is the amount of times I've been about to tee-off and Salah ruins my day before it starts because he scores and I didn't have him! So I really get this vibe.

Kane also used to not score in Autumn, but lately the dude is as much as a machine as Haaland IMO (given he's close to being a decade older and playing for a much worse team).

    I've been a bit out of the loop with transfers this season, so I'm probably missing someone (I was, forgot about Nkunku - glad I checked), but if I'm the Chelsea boss, I'm probably playing this team;

    Kepa
    James, Fofana, Badiashile, Cucurella, Chilwell
    Gallagher, Enzo
    Ziyech, Lukaku/Nkunku, Sterling

    If Poch goes for something like this could be impressive & devastating. He's a great manager and I could see a lot of people potentially switching to these assets fast given how low their prices are, and we haven't even got started on their GW2 - GW8 fixtures!! (To add to the fixture comment, there are three window's you want CHE assets - unless they turn into an Arsenal/City/Liverpool, of old, this season - GW2-8, GW16 - 21/24 & GW30 - 38.) The combo's you could have;

    James, Chiwell, Ziyech = 16.5M
    James, Chilwell, Sterling = 18M
    James, Chilwell, Lukaku = 18M
    James/Chiwell, Sterling, Lukaku = 19.5M
Naturally could even opt for a cheaper defender by 0.5 or 1M in Cucu or Fofana/Badiashile respectively.

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years

As an outsider looking in (could be very wrong):

I think Ziyech could still leave, which would leave Madueke as the only 'natural' on the right wing. Poch expected to play 4 at the back (it might be foolhardy to aim for a wingback system with fragile wingbacks). Badiashile may miss the start of the season with a groin injury (though Colwill is pretty like-for-like). I think Silva might be the first defender on the teamsheet for many Chelsea fans, though. And they would typically put Nkunku behind Jackson (or another striker) as a creator (he's terrible in the air). I think those fans are also desperate to sign Caicedo as Gallagher not deemed good enough to rely on.

      1. Zenith UK
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

I never understood why Ziyech didn't get more opportunities. I thought/think he's a class little player.

Losing Badiashile fair, start T.Silva then. I get what you mean about fragile wingbacks, but if they start the season fit, be mad not to play both and I think the five at the back system allows you to utilise Reece and Ben to their best potential. The above team (for me at least) is built as a counter-attacking team, which I think we see a lot of re-building teams do when they fall off the boil. Seen it with Arsenal, Liverpool and Man U in the past 10 years, it can be devestating with the pace and talent CHE have at their disposal.

If Caicedo did come in instead of Gallagher wouldn't change the structure too much. Completely forgot about Jackson too!

Still, should be fun to watch with those price points, eh?

If I were Poch I would go for a 4-2-3-1 and sign Caceido:

      Kepa
      James Badiashile Fofana Chilwell
      Caceido* Fernandez
      Madueke Nkunku Mudryk
      Jackson

And in the meantime sell Aubameyang, Pulisic, Ziyech, Rahman, Hudson-Odoi, and Lukaku.

With no European football they can play a settled first XI every game and have backup this season in the form of Bettinelli (GK), Chalobah (DF), Sarr (DF), Silva (DF), Cucurella (DF), Gallagher (MF), Ampadu (MF), Chukwuemeka (MF), D.Fofana (FW), Sterling (FW), and Broja (FW).

I would also loan out the youngsters (Colwill, Gusto, Anjorin, Casadei, Hall, Santos, Moreira) to clubs where they can play first team football in preparation for a season of being back in the team next season when Chelsea should have lots more games having qualified for Europe.

Yep. Sterling is not the future of Chelsea (neither is Silva). I would keep Sterling and Silva this season to tie them over and then dump next summer. Chelsea have enough good players available next season IMO, but need to build the team relationships this season. You want to see James and Fofana become a good combo, same with James and Madueke etc.

With no European football this season, Poch really shouldn't be relying on more than 2 GKs + 17 outfield players. He has enough players to get Chelsea into a European spot already. His job this season should be to:

          1) Build the team relationships
          2) Clear out the rubbish (Auba etc.)
          3) Make sure the youngsters get first team football by going on loan to good teams

nah i'd rather keep Saka, find another way, or get other City defenders for 5m like Ake or Akanji, they're all at risk of rotation so i don't think it matters much

Man of the moment is Pickford. I'm waiting to see which 4.5 emerges from Brighton or Brentford.
Ramsdale - it's a yes from me, but I want 3 outfield assets from Arsenal.

Can't bring myself to get Pickford. So likely to be Ramsdale.

For a Arsenal def, I think there's decent alternatives available, although EO will be high, hence having Ramsdale as 'cover'

I think ramsdale is the best option as i couldn’t afford an arsenal def with a back line of TAA, Shaw, Estu and 2 x 4m def with 0 itb. I would rather have Shaw than downgrade just to get a potential ‘goal threat’ arsenal defender but this is just me

Think they've gone too far with the 4.5m mids. Usually there's a splattering of 4 or 5 that could be chosen, at a push.

Now there is literally nothing. Not even for the odd sub appearance in real life it seems.

They should have given us a couple options for those that play that strategy

If you don't like the 4.5 mids, don't buy them, or work out your strategy around it. I don't see what the complaints are for. Everyone has the same pick of players and the same rules. I'm glad there's something a bit new this season, even if it's as lame as there not being an obvious 4.5 mid 😆

I think I actually managed to create a (mostly) playing threemium+twoalmostpremium team. More reasonable than the previous top-heavy draft, but notably missing TAA.

    Areola | Fabianski
    Botman | Mings | Tarkowski | Beyer | Bell
    Salah | Bruno | Saka | Kluivert | Chukwuemeka
Kane | Haaland | Balogun (or another 4.5)

Mings and Botman were solid performers last season (although Botman's starting fixtures are mehhhh, so I might actually drop him for Ahmedhodzic).

If Saka becomes Martinelli (which I'm a bit loath to do), Kluivert can become Enciso. Same if Areola becomes a starting keeper and I can grab another 4.0 to pair him with.

But yeah, it's top-heavy for sure. Likely a WC inside the first month. Which might not be so bad, actually. I held it longer than ever last season and it hurt me.

          There's potentially a better option:

          Areola | Hennessey
          Gabriel | Tarkowski | Beyer | Ahmedhodzic | Bell
          Salah | Saka | Foden | Enciso | Kluivert
          Kane | Haaland | 4.5

I bloody love Smith-Rowe, I had hoped he’d take Xhaka’s place but that’s not going to happen.

He’s capable of 15-20 goals a season but not sure he’s going to accept a place on the bench.

A loan might be the best option for him, just don’t sell him permanently.

Lampard was a very good player, in a great team.

In order for ESR to be a regular starter. He'd be a good player (with potential), in an average team.

Arsenal simply can't afford to loan ESR this season. He will get plenty of minutes in all competitions, and we obviously need backups. The club also couldn't rely on him to stay fit for the whole season, like they couldn't rely on Tierney, Tomiyasu, Partey, etc., and that's why they had to invest in new signings.

You always need at least plans B and C. I really hope we will see more second-half subs like Martinelli, Jesus, Saka, Odegaard, Havertz âž¡ Trossard, Nketiah, Nelson, Smith Rowe, Vieira. Arteta shouldn't run his starters into the ground for the sake of it. Make subs when the match is basically won and save their legs for next week.

      Interesting. £17.5M for two mids:

      1. How many points does Kluivert have to get to tip the balance assuming captaincy is mostly on Haaland?

Only nailed Pool attacker is Salah but I would go with Madders before Son but with 2 tough fixtures, wait and see for me.

    Which line up is better?

    A)
    Leno-Ortega
    Saliba-Estupinian-TAA-Beyer-Botman
    Mbeumo-Foden-Rashford-Saka-Mitoma
    Haaland-Ndiaye-Nkunku

    B)
    Raya-Leno
    Saliba-Estupinan-Shaw-Mings-Botman
    Mbeumo-Odegaard-Rashford-Saka-Mitoma
    Haaland-Ndiaye-Nkunku

A but i would downgrade Ndiaye for a 4.5 and use the extra mill Nkunku to Jesus & have .5 in the bank if you see someone in preseason worth upgrading to

Why no love for maddison? He was more than good at a struggling team, now more cheaper, at a better team. I can see another eriksen on the rise. Doesnt have competition in his place. Should be nailed on.

Everyone has said it, he's a good player, but there's too much good choice for similarly priced midfielders this season. Not that he's a bad choice, but I think there's even better.

I want to see how they set up first but he’s definitely on my radar.

Other options. Nobody knows how long it will take Spuds to improve. Kane uncertainty. Fixtures improve GW3. I'm looking at maybe Foden to Madd (Rash > Son also possible).

If Kane definitely stays, Maddison becomes more attractive immediately.

Currently on Maddison but could easily be Diaz or a city mid but preseason will determine this

Tis unrequited love, that’s why, but I think Big Ange will bring the love out. Indeed Jack, you’d be well advised to listen to the extended remix of Kelly Marie’s ‘Feels Like I’m in Love’! You’ll thank me later.

I’m ready, targetting early fixtures and price rises along with some staple proven assets and a cheeky punt on a differential Son:

    Pickford
    Trent | Gabriel | Estupinan
    Salah | Son | Saka | Andreas | Enciso
    Haaland | Ferguson

    Areola | Baldock | Beyer | Woodrow

    Thoughts chaps?

No Newcastle defense a worry do we think given EO currently?

Mind you having looked at their first 3 fixtures might be ok to go without at the start

I’ve yet to see a draft without botman at 4.5. Crap fixtures but great price. Nice team though.

No attacking threat though, I think I’ve convinced myself to go without at the start having looked at their fixtures properly.

I also got scared when I noticed Estupinan’s ownership, so upgraded Botman!

And thanks, yes looks good on paper, but never seem to work out that way and end up with an early WC haha

Nice team. If only you could squeeze 0.5m somewhere to upgrade that bench.

Or Saka to Martinelli, but with Saka on pens I think he’s definitely worth the extra 0.5

      Cheeky punt 😯
Would you play FPL if there were no Son, no Kane?

Funny you say that as I’ve just considered Bruno instead of Son and Botman instead of Beyer on the bench.

Any reasoning behind the Areola second keeper choices, is there something up with Fabianski or something?

Areola was first choice at the back end of last season I think, he also started the UEFA conference final

Flappyhandski is 38 years old. I was stunned to hear that today. Time for new hands.

Might be 1st choice, over Flappy. As good a 4.0 placeholder as any.
