anyone thinking of powerhousing the mids and defence?

Cheap in goal with Isak up top

Yeah, I tend to go cheap-ish at the back at the start, as there tend to be fewer CS's until teams get organised.
So makes sense to go bigger mid/attack in first draft:

      Gk - 4.5 / 4.0
      Gvardial - 4.5m - 3 x 4.0's

Which combination is likely to score more points long term?

    A) Raya and Mykolenko
    B) Pickford and Saliba

Both good. Mykolenko and Saliba both worth having. Maybe B gives more flexibility because it gives more options to switch to better cheaper options that emerge in either position?

It's too big a risk having both imo, you are banking on both of them hauling in order to get a decent score every week. There will be games where they both blank and other players you couldn't afford smash it, so I would pick one and then load up on as many other big hitter that you can afford.

      I'm currently on Haaland.

I mean... That's true whatever team you pick. No-one's going to bank returns every week. There'll be gameweeks where your selections work out and weeks where they don't and other managers have the players that score.

But over the longer term there's every reason to expect Salah and Haaland to score more, and return more often than anyone else. Plus they're the best captaincy options. It's just a question of a) whether that justifies allocating a big chunk of cash to them over building a more balanced team and b) which you enjoy more...

    Conceivably could:

    CHO
    ESR (if/when he moves)
    Nkunku
    Eze

Outscore some of the big names such as saka, palmer, son etc with the fixtures they have in the first say 6gws? Especially as this would allow a salah, haaland, isak (and even Watkins front line with a cheap defence. Then bank some transfers and switch it up to the big boys as the fixtures turn?

That's what we hope when we buy them, but those premium options are somewhat safer bets.

Any given gameweek the FPL Team of the Week will usually come in well under budget because there will be cheap and midpriced options who have the best haul of their season.

I've got Cunha in my team because despite tough fixtures the Wolves attack was pretty potent at the end of last season, and based on last year's stats he could benefit significantly from the new BPS metrics.

What are some of the biggest mistakes you made last season and won’t repeat this year:

    Mine are:

Premium defence to start: started big at the back because it looked like it added ‘balance’ and I saw value there. Paid the price for ignoring there are less clean sheets at the start of a new season and this years bp changes give me know reason to think it will be better this year.

Getting a good balance: following on from above, balance for me can be a bit of a fallacy. What looks good on paper doesn’t always translate to the most efficient or effective strategy. The best performing teams over the first 6gwks will probably not be the most balanced.

Picking the names I think will do well for the SEASON: Neglecting the fact that wk1 is essentially a wildcard and at any other point in the season I would play the fixtures. Ie do I want saka for the season? Yes. Is he the best choice to start? Perhaps not.

Cheers. I think it can be valuable to learn from others mistakes.

I would maybe even add following to that list. The bandwagon effect. Template is template for a reason and boring captains again are often boring for a reason (especially over a season). And going rogue doesn’t always work out, however the bandwagon effect can easily sway you in to making choices AGAINST your judgement early doors in favour of a herd pick.

I think there's some rationale to picking for the season at the start. The season evolves very quickly. Patterns form, players emerge, others disperse. Given that uncertainty you can be forgiven for picking season-keepers because they are also those players who are more immune from the fevers of form and fixture, and also the ones you can comfortably hold onto while fighting fires elsewhere in your squad.

Lopetegui plays 4-3-3 and Kudus, listed as a MF, will be an OOP player in his system, and imho this is enough to justify the question. Moreover: since the times at Sevilla, he asked his wingers and fullbacks to overload the flanks, and to the formers not so often to shoot than to cross, and that could increase the assist potential both of Kudus and Bowen, while maybe lowering their respective xG. I can easily see for Kudus 14-18 goal involvements, maybe even more than Bowen. More-moreover: he's an absolute baller, unmarkable on his day.

I have a question. It's not a typical rate my team, or, a) b) c) question. My question is who is the one that actually chooses what players to use?
If I sat you all down individually and asked you the question you'd almost all answer something along the lines of " Well me of course". So who or what or where is this sense of a "me"? Is there some kind of controlling entity 'inside the body with maybe a joystick that controls everything?
I've spent the last 4 years turning my attention inward, and I can not find this sense of a 'me'.

I count at least three questions in there. Most philosophical questions don't have a definitive answer, so your definition of a "me" is as good as ours.

My team isn't chosen, it's an emergent phenomenon from the FPL environment. It's a living thing. It is the game manifesting itself. Mykolenko is becoming self-aware...

Who else thinks Yoro is a steal - can only see utd stronger defensively this year. Mainoo will step up, branthwaite or alternative joins and you’ve a cheap opt in a top 6 side

Yeah, I think they will improve this season. I'm sure I'll own Yoro at one point during the season.

I am not 100% sure before gw11. Don't know how they are going to play yet. If they try to be attacking, they will probably concede too much.

Wouldn't go near any United player until we sign a couple of midfielders

Aren't United still relying on Casemiro as their main CDM/6?

As it stands yes, and he's looked absolutely shocking so far

Munoz or drop down to 4.5m

Maatsen, but I'd rather get someone at 4.5m

I think there's ample choice at 4.5, but at 5.0 there's certainly Munoz, and also:

          Branthwaite
          Senesi
          Maatsen

Martinez, but Shaw could have another 22-23

AWB at 4.5 could be good, perhaps more in real life

AWB is literally packing his bags for West Ham if rumours are true.

Good evening everyone. What do we think of my Haaland and Salah draft:

    Sanchez/henderson
    Virgil/gvardiol/burn/myolenko/bellis
    Salah/nkunku/eze/elanga/rogers
    Haaland/isak/muniz

Feels very balanced but what do you guys think?? 🙂

Slightly less compelled to ask this given the usefulness of the article above, but who is the most talented first-choice 4.5 keeper? No other considerations, just the most capable

*Ramsdale is 4.5 interestingly, but not relevant to the question
