It’s time for the Scout Notes from two more Gameweek 23 matches: Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-1 Arsenal and Southampton 1-3 Newcastle United.

‘ILL’ ISAK BACK ON THE GOAL TRAIL

ill Isak

A brace for Alexander Isak (£9.5m) took him to 17 goals for the season, two behind Mohamed Salah (£13.7m) in the Golden Boot race.

After all the pre-game hullabaloo about a potential illness, the Swedish striker started and lasted 79 minutes. It turns out, however, that Isak was ill this week.

“A couple of players slightly under the weather coming into the game, as well. Alex wasn’t feeling 100%, Bruno wasn’t feeling 100%. So with all those things added together, I think a great win.” – Eddie Howe

After Isak’s penalty cancelled out Jan Bednarek‘s (£4.0m) shock opener, the in-form forward and Sandro Tonali (£5.5m) took the game beyond the Saints. Both finished after fine through-balls from Jacob Murphy (£5.1m) and Anthony Gordon (£7.7m).

Isak had two other efforts well saved, while Murphy hit the post, Joelinton (£6.0m) saw a goalbound shot blocked and a threatening Lewis Hall (£5.1m) had a very decent penalty shout turned away.

Is all well in the Newcastle garden, then, after last week’s humiliation by Bournemouth? In truth, beating a wretched Southampton tells us very little about any team. A true test will be Fulham in Gameweek 24, with the Cottagers carrying the same banana-skin potential as the Cherries.

HOWE ON HIS CENTRE-BACKS

Eddie Howe’s only starting XI change saw Fabian Schar (£5.4m) come back in for Sven Botman (£4.4m).

The Newcastle boss explained his ongoing dilemma at centre-half after full-time.

“Very tough, I’m not going to lie. That was one of the toughest calls that I’ve had this season because our love for Sven is so high but I think taking everything into account, he’s just back from a long-term injury. This isn’t a negative for him, it’s very much a positive that he can continue to build his sharpness and fitness while not in the spotlight of playing.

“That doesn’t mean that he’s not ready to play because he’s got a very valuable part to play. He’ll also put pressure on the ones that are, which is hugely important, but I thought Fabian came back into the team today and did very well.” – Eddie Howe on his centre-back dilemma

Nick Pope (£4.9m) was back in the squad after recovering from a month-long injury. Martin Dubravka (£4.3m) deservedly kept his place, however, making a couple of smart stops.

OLIVER’S BARMY

Arsenal overcame more adversity in the shape of yet another red card to get back on the winning trail.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (£4.5m) was dismissed for serious foul play just before half-time in a decision from Michael Oliver that might be politely described as ‘polarising’. The referee later squared the numbers by dismissing Joao Gomes (£4.9m) for two bookable offences.

Arsenal will, surely, appeal their latest red card (Mikel Arteta said afterwards that the club might not even need to), otherwise Lewis-Skelly will sit out Gameweeks 24 and 25.

ARSENAL GRIND OUT A WIN

Oliver’s decision, in fact, seemed to galvanize Arsenal. The game had been drifting until then, with the Gunners largely in control but not creating tonnes of chances. It was 1-5 in shots at the point of Lewis-Skelly’s 43rd-minute dismissal.

Wolves had 27 minutes (plus first-half injury time) with an extra man but seldom looked like scoring during it. Their best chances, an early Pablo Sarabia (£5.0m) volley and a late Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.7m) breakaway shot, came when there wasn’t a numerical advantage. Matheus Cunha (£6.9m) had more attempts (four) than anyone on show but only one of which, a snapshot from a corner that crept wide, was from inside the area.

Above: Wolves’ shotmap in Gameweek 23

Arsenal did find the net: substitute Riccardo Calafiori (£5.8m) coming on to lash home a loose ball.

Kai Havertz (£7.8m) had three very good headed chances throughout the game, too, and should have made it four goals in five matches.

“I’m extremely proud of all the players. You can talk about our courage, you can talk about the spirit, but as well about intelligence. The way they managed emotionally the game, it was unbelievable. And especially with what we have to face and how they felt about it. All of them, just face the situation, the challenge.” – Mikel Arteta

All in all, then, a day when Arteta can rightly hail “courage” and “spirit”, even it does mask the fact that bar two Havertz headers, they hadn’t really tested an out-of-form Wolves defence before Lewis-Skelly’s red. The Gunners remain in the bottom half for open-play xG in 2024/25.

ODEGAARD + STRAND LARSEN LATEST

At least there was joy for owners of Arsenal defenders, which there hasn’t been much of recently. William Saliba (£6.2m) made an unexpectedly quick recovery to mop up all three bonus points along with a clean sheet.

The Gunners may have recovered Saliba but they lost Martin Odegaard (£8.2m) and Mikel Merino (£6.0m) before the game. Odegaard’s issue at least was only illness, so you’d expect him back in Gameweek 24.

Wolves meanwhile lost Jorgen Strand Larsen (£5.3m) to an early muscle injury, with substitute Hwang Hee-chan (£6.1m) going up front.

“I hope that the injury… I think it is not a serious injury because you know this is another position that we have problems. Hwang Hee-chan is the only [other] player that can play there as a striker. Okay, Cunha maybe, Cunha can play there but Cunha is not a striker.” – Vitor Pereira

      Agree with Hairy
I'm shuffling to get both Wissa and Mbueno in for a nice patch of fixtures
I think Mbueno's upside for the next 6-8 games is high

All season I have chosen my transfer early in the week but have held off until Friday night/Saturday in case of injuries or conference news.

On zero occasions has my chosen player/transfer changed from the Sunday night through to the Saturday morning. But I have missed endless price-changes. I have probably lost about 1.5mil over the course of the season due to waiting!

It's a strategy that can pay off if players get injured, just down to (bad)luck really.

How often do players actually get injured? Having decent bench helps to navigate these situations. That current 1.5 million would have given chance to upgrade Greaves to Robinson etc long time ago. 1.5 million extra is worth over 4 pts at this stage of the season imo.

And it's a strategy that can easily end up badly also. There are always lucky players who make early transfers and they are difficult to beat with poor TV. Mine is 107.2 atm and it doesn't give me the edge I'd like to have. However, my strategy doesn't work every season either.

Maybe I need better players on my bench to cover injuries. I am too much of a cautious and boring manager to take gambles on early transfers 🙂

Just a note. Over 2000 players have brought in DCL this GW! So not only have they bought in a rubbish player early, they have brought in an injured rubbish player early. A hat trick of fails.

Opposite for me for a few years, rash decisions ended up disastrous with brought in players who then got hurt/ill
I used to be a price guy, now I'm a patient player
By all means play your own game, start pulling the trigger early
Both strategies have merits...I've come up 0.1 short after a price rise too.

For those concerned about Gakpo's home versus away form....

Not a huge sample size. 7 games home; 7 games away.

It takes him more 3 times longer to get an FPL point away.

Goal threat is not too different but xG plummets to well less than half away from home. Also his goal conversion rate drops from over 30 to 5.6. This suggests that he's not getting the quality of chances away. Looking at his xG shot heatmap and he is mostly shooting from the same position on the left of the 18 yard box. It also looks like at home he's had some really high xG shots inside the 6 yard box, which has pushed up the numbers. It looks like just one 6 yard box shot away.

His assist potential is much better away, though. Away, he's creating chances at almost double the rate than at home.

My assessment would be that these numbers would even out across a season but that you should expect him to score more heavily at home.

Tempted, no but one of the options I considered. For my team setup, Alisson/Konate is more likely my 3rd
Liverpool pick. I also didn't want to close the AM chip option if Spurs Fulham move from 29 to 25 by blocking the 3rd Liverpool spot and I already had a benching dilemma this GW so saving FT felt the best option for my team

Fair enough, have a similar team and gave up on the AM. Spurs play after GW24 deadline so 25 was going to be too hard to be ready for. Pool defence has been leaky for a while so went the attack route.

If anyone didn't see the Liverpool game yesterday Szobo played like a man possessed. Granted it was an easy game he looked much more involved going forward. Could be a shrewd pick for the double

I think he would be my Diaz replacement over using 2FTs to pivot to Gakpo if sticking with Liverpool attackers

1FT. Sels to Pickford or save and build up some transfers with GW29 in mind

Do you think Sels will outscore Pickford until GW29?

Not sure. Looking at the fixtures and extra game Pickford does look better, but then Forest just keep on pulling out results and surprising everyone

The 5-0 was a surprise and stopped me playing Kluivert. Too much saving transfers going on, play each GW as is. I'd bet on Sels until 29.

That defence with mighty Spence instead of Davies kept a CS(allowing 1,2 xG) against the best team in the Galaxy.

Is team value starting to cause issues? Some seem to have problems with fitting both TAA and Gabriel, which I don't understand. (Having said that, I have sold my 8th attacker to Stewart, but I have money in Bruno also.)

Sold TAA in GW12 was ranked 200k. Now 20k.
Owned Gabriel for 4 GWs this season. He missed 2 of them.

Possibly, but they will be even better for BB and AM. TC is the weakest chip, worth 8-10 pts prolly.

Just thinking about Asst Manager Chip. My original thoughts were to go in on Slot for GW24/25/26. However, now considering a mix and match and now leaning towards: Slot for DGW 24 then transfer to Iraola for GW 25 (Sou) and GW 26 (Wol) as fancy BOU to score a few goals.

      • 11 Years

Makes sense. I'd be tempted still to leave on Slot for 25 vs Wolves though. Not sure its worth a transfer in 25 but can see the logic for 26

Would still cost 1 transfer either you switch in 25 or 26 though

Ange Postecoglou on James Maddison: "He's still a bit sore from the other night. It took a fair bit out of the group and he just wasn't 100% so he misses out today. No no [nothing too serious]. We hope not. Hopefully should be alright for next week."
