Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers looking to invest in defenders should take a good look at the options presented by Everton’s backline.

Our Fixture Ticker says the Toffees have the second-best schedule over the next six Gameweeks.

With key attackers injured, away on international duty or simply misfiring, their defenders are the top Fantasy targets for this run.

As you might expect from a David Moyes team, the Everton backline is performing well, keeping four clean sheets over their last seven outings.

The question is, which defender is the better buy: Michael Keane (£4.7m) or James Tarkowski (£5.5m)?

Very little separates these two pillars in terms of points, with Keane the joint-sixth-best FPL defender over the season. He boasts 81 points, and Tarkowski is close behind on 77.

Keane or Tarkowski: who should FPL managers buy?

AVAILABILITY

It’s been quite the season for Keane, who almost certainly wouldn’t have been a starter were it not for a hamstring surgery that has kept Jarrad Branthwaite (£5.3m) completely absent.

Though on the road to recovery, Branthwaite will not be back in action for another few weeks, so Keane’s short-term availability looks secure. Further helping is that he’s playing so well.

“Jarrad is getting closer to getting back on the grass now, and we’re hoping to get him there by the end of the month, but it could be longer than that.

“He’s not due to integrate back in for two-to-three weeks, maybe more, so it’s not like I’m getting him back quickly. I’m just saying It’s beginning to look better than it was, and we’re getting closer to the point of that [returning to training].

“But I think my bigger worry is he’s missed so much of the season, [it’s] to get back into the swing of it quickly. But we need him back.” – David Moyes on Jarrad Branthwaite’s return, speaking on Tuesday

YELLOW CARD KLAXON

FPL Gameweek 22 differentials: Gibbs-White, Wilson + Tarkowski 1

Keane has missed only one match this season, when a calf injury kept him out of Gameweek 14’s victory over Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, Tarkowski has been an ever-present, meaning he edges fitness reliability.

However, Keane has managed to avoid receiving any yellow cards so far, as Tarkowski still walks the four-booking tightrope. There are still two more matches to get through before he’s in the clear.

Play Chalobah vs AVL(H) or Guehi vs TOT(H)?

    1. Miguel Sanchez
      • 10 Years

My dilemma (with H.Wilson too) - think I’m playing Chalobah before Guehi as Palace look a bit knackered and Sanchez is pretty decent at saving shots from distance if that’s what Villa resort to.

      1. Miguel Sanchez
        • 10 Years

Palace haven’t got the best home record and Spurs been pretty decent on the road too.

Same dillema, currently playing Guehi because it should be low scoring game.
The odds are similar (2.75 for Chelsea and 3.00 for Palace)

    3. Haa-lala-land

      Chalobah by some margin.
Spurs, as poor as they've been, to put a few past Palace, who look there for the taking.

I'd play Guehi as he's likely to get more minutes than Chalobah. Plus they play Sunday which is five days worth of rest.

XGC was low for Forest and Bournemouth but it's a small sample size. The other matches were Arsenal and Newcastle which doesn't represent the standard of opposition they will face over the medium term.

I haven't watched their last few games, unfortunately, so I'm a bit unsure. The last time I watched them was when he was sent off vs United.

I really think the popular Thiago to Ekitike move will end in tears this week. Bournemouth without Adams, should concede a few to Brentford who are quite strong at home

    1. Yes Ndidi
      • 6 Years
      7 months, 3 days ago

They may well concede a few to Brentford, but Thiago couldn't find the net against the mighty defences of Leeds on the road & Wolves. If he does score against Bournemouth, with or without Adams, it'll be an outlier on current form.
I'd struggle to back him to score against Bournemouth without a keeper.

      1. The Knights Template

Thiago is a lummox and deserves all the vituperation one can throw at him! Penalty merchant! Unless of course he moves to Liverpool, in which case I’ve always loved him!

    2. mookie
      • 12 Years

I think playing 2 forwards was a mistake. A long sunk cost fallacy cycle we just can't get out of.
Nothing special Tarkowski with 6 CS and 1 A is outscoring all forwards except the robot and the Thiago the pen merchant.
We've wasted transfers on Watkins > Pedro > Gyokeres > Thiago > Ekitike, when bang on average Tarkowski would've done the same job.

      Thiago - 11 goals = 84 points
      Tarkowski - 6 CS + 1 A = 77 points

Who do you think will keep that up?
      I wouldn't bet a cent on Thiago.

      1. mookie

Good points and this is why I'm beefing up my defence and playing the fixtures with 4/5 at the back over the next while. Selling Saka to fund this.

Maybe 1 forward is the play but I think I prefer rotating 2nd forward based on fixtures

            • 5 Years
            7 months, 3 days ago

2 or 3 forwards is still the correct strategy. So long as you use your Frees to chase the upside in mid and forwards only. Dont make any defender transfers since they are all the same, and defender points are too hard to predict, compared to forwards and mids. Targeting a transfer on an Ekitike or Cunha at home to Wolves is still more likely to get you points than a defender transfer any given game week. Just leave your defenders alone.

I am considering this, my only concern is losing on price rises this way and rotation midweek - free hit allows for some out of the ordinary punts midweek potentially

i'm gonna swallow any price rises, no different to me doing last minute transfers against those beating the rises and doing it early. the extra week, is another week of data and you never know it could swing the other way and planned changes may be blown out of the water with injuries or suspensions from this GW. For me, a bit of patience i hope helps, rather than panic transfers then spending a few gw's rectifying it,

How are you doing this season? Talking out of my a**, but feel the WC dictates the mindset for the season. The longer you hesitate to play it, the more risk averse you end up playing since you're constantly fire fighting and fire fighting can get quite tedious after a while. Of course if you're flying, then there's probably no need to play it. Think rolling up to 4 especially banking 3 in the first 5 GWs, can potentially offset an early WC but that does require you to have been quite good and lucky with your GW1 team.

slow to middling ta, stubbornness meant i held salah from gw1 until afcon and failed to take advantage of some surges with semenyo, wilson, arsenal. but still in touching distance of top 3 in my money league which is my priority. Banked 5 ft's early on in the season by some fortunate picks, and just been tweaking ever since. planning similar to hold the afcon 5ft for as long as possible and wildcard next week, using the fts for any blips. not panicking on the wc, majority of my squad im happy with and i feel, arsenals defence ive missed that boat. last season i didnt even wc until the penultimate gw.

Next move is either keeper or Palmer, Palmer gives benching headache?

my eye test is palmer may be time managed, regardless of what is said, he's needed for the bigger games and i think he is not fully mobile, but it could work out. i'm tempted to change tact and use fodder for defence and focus on mids.

Rice would be the obvious one, but you can't

Rogers long term, but don't expect much this week or next
Gordon, but it'll be a rollercoaster (owner)
Mount if you want to keep a bit of Man U

Other than that, there isn't much to get excited about.
      When's Gakpo back?

Any one with Nick Pope hoping he will play this GW, what are the chances do we think?

    Long season.

Early GWs, 4.0 defenders/promoted teams racking up CS, scoring some goals (Jaidon Anthony etc.). Now? Goals conceded, Leeds/DCL often.

Aston Villa, West Ham, easy CS points. Rogers, Watkins, Bowen - times change.

Invest in attack or defense? Defensive contributions, a nice addition to the game.

I played 442 for the vast majority of the season, it served me really well. I'll be going back to that formation really soon

-8 With this team. Wouldn’t be able to afford it with the price rises since the weekend now.

Or free hit out of it?

If you have your free hit left may as well use it, you’ll get another in next GW

Forced to boost that bench this GW.

Shall I replace Wilson and or Esteve?

I wouldn't, both are likely to play. Esteve has trained this week and Silva has already played down Wilson's injury concerns.
