While defensive contribution (DefCon) points are a nice extra, clean sheets remain the staple of a defender’s diet in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Using Rate My Team (RMT) projections to assess probability, this article highlights the teams with the strongest chances of shutting out their opponents and the defences worth targeting in Gameweek 28.

GAMEWEEK 28 CLEAN SHEET PROJECTIONS

SUMMARY

At the top of our graphic this week, with a 39% chance of a clean sheet, sit Liverpool. They’ve been largely hit-and-miss defensively this season, but three consecutive shutouts suggest things are tightening up. A home fixture against West Ham offers a strong opportunity to extend that run.

By now, we’re used to seeing Arsenal near the summit of these projections. The Gunners have recorded more clean sheets than any other side in the league, even if they’ve gone three matches without one. Chelsea provide tough opposition, so this could prove trickier in reality than the numbers imply.

Brentford sit level with Arsenal in our Rate My Team projections. Defensive inconsistency has dogged their campaign but they do have four clean sheets in their last 11 outings, a total that only Arsenal can better. An away trip to a struggling Burnley side should hand them a solid platform for returns.

Newcastle, meanwhile, continue to underperform defensively. Eddie Howe’s men have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 10 matches across all competitions. A meeting with Everton, the fourth-lowest scores on the road, could offer the chance to finally end that run.

Rounding off the top five ahead of Gameweek 28 are Aston Villa. Just five points behind Manchester City and enjoying an outstanding season, Unai Emery’s side will look to strengthen their defensive record against a Wolverhampton Wanderers outfit who, although improved, are still the league’s lowest scorers.
