For those Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with the Wildcard still intact, when is the best time to use it?

In this article, we run through the pros and cons of playing the Wildcard in Gameweeks 32 and 35, the two most popular windows that remain.

GAMEWEEK 32 WILDCARD: THE PROS

Double Gameweek 33 Bench Boost

A Gameweek 32 Wildcard allows you to load up on Gameweek 33 ‘doublers’, with a Bench Boost in mind.

Bournemouth, Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley, Chelsea, Leeds United and Manchester City are the six teams that play twice in Gameweek 33:

Therefore, you could potentially include 14 ‘doublers’ on your Wildcard, as well as the in-form Bruno Fernandes (£10.3m), who is very difficult to leave out given his Gameweek 32 fixture at home to Leeds.

Although it’s not guaranteed, this approach puts you in a really strong position to rack up a big Double Gameweek 33 score, in turn propelling you up the rankings.

Neale has already looked at a few Gameweek 32 Wildcard drafts to consider in this piece here.

Get on Brighton early

Brighton have a superb Gameweek 32 fixture, away at Burnley, so it’s the perfect entry point for a triple-up.

We’ve already discussed the merits of a defensive triple-up here, with Jack Hinshelwood (£5.1m) and Danny Welbeck (£6.2m) alternatives further forward.

Like Brighton, Leeds also have some decent fixtures to target in Gameweeks 35 to 38 (BUR, tot, BHA, whu), so look decent bets for the run-in.

Stock up on Man City

FPL notes: Mixed fortunes for Haaland + Salah 2

Man City visit Chelsea in Gameweek 32, who have kept just one clean sheet in 15 Premier League matches.

They follow it up with a Double Gameweek 33, and remember, City will have another ‘double’ beyond that one, likely in Gameweek 36.

Erling Haaland (£14.4m), who many FPL managers have recently sold, will have plenty of interest after Saturday’s hat-trick against Liverpool, while Antoine Semenyo (£8.2m) is hard to look past in midfield.

Defensively, Nico O’Reilly (£5.0m) looks a threat regardless of position, as demonstrated by his FA Cup assist against the Reds.

Gameweek 34 Free Hit

After Bournemouth, Brighton, Burnley, Chelsea, Leeds and Man City ‘double’ in Gameweek 33, the same six teams then blank in Gameweek 34.

Gameweek 32 Wildcarders can subsequently Free Hit in Gameweek 34, allowing you to build an optimal squad for that specific round of fixtures.

Gameweek 34 fixtures, sorted by difficulty on our Season Ticker

The matchups admittedly don’t scream points, but it is, after all, part of a much bigger plan, and probably shouldn’t be focused on in isolation.

GAMEWEEK 32 WILDCARD: THE CONS

Not great entry points

One of the ‘cons’ for playing a Gameweek 32 Wildcard is the fact that so many of the Gameweek 33 ‘doublers’ have poor entry points.

Bournemouth and Leeds are away at Arsenal and Manchester United respectively, for example.

Then there’s Man City and Chelsea, who play each other. You could feasibly have five or six of your starting XI involved in that fixture alone, which is far from ideal if there aren’t many goals.

So, the trade-off is clear: a weaker-looking XI this week, but lots of players with two fixtures in Gameweek 33.

No Arsenal players?

Arsenal not ‘doubling’ in Gameweek 33 has made it trickier for Gameweek 32 Wildcarders, as they have some great fixtures from now until the end of the season.

No Arsenal coverage could hurt in Gameweek 32, for example, when Mikel Arteta’s side are the bookies’ favourites to keep a clean sheet.

You could, of course, include Gabriel Magalhaes (£7.2m) in your Wildcard squad, who most managers will have value tied up in, but it isn’t ideal to maximise the Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 33, when Arsenal visit Man City.

Arsenal + Palace transfer focus in Gameweeks 35/36

Should you choose to exclude Arsenal players from your Wildcard, you will probably need to prioritise them in Gameweek 35, ideal for those with a few free transfers already banked.

But if you don’t fall into this category, it becomes a bit more complicated, especially considering that players from Crystal Palace may also need to be transferred in before their ‘double’.

Either way, it will give you less flexibility with transfers for the final few Gameweeks.

To help navigate this period, you could include someone like Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m) on your Gameweek 32 Wildcard. Bench Boosting a single Gameweek option isn’t ideal, but Palace do at least have West Ham United at home.

GAMEWEEK 35 WILDCARD: THE PROS

Keep Arsenal players + your Gameweek 32 team

One of the main advantages of a later Wildcard is that you can keep your Arsenal players.

The same applies to Man Utd and Liverpool assets, who both have favourable on-paper fixtures in Gameweek 32.

Gameweek 32 fixtures, sorted by difficulty on our Season Ticker

If you Wildcard this week, you’ll probably offload those aforementioned options because they don’t ‘double’ in Gameweek 33.

As a result, by holding off, your immediate points potential is likely higher.

Gameweek 33 Free Hit

FPL notes: Cherki stars, Dyche on Jesus + £4.0m ‘keeper starts again

A Gameweek 35 Wildcard could be preceded by a Gameweek 33 Free Hit, which would allow you to field a full team of ‘doublers’.

It means the Free Hit chip could be used a bit more aggressively, knowing that you don’t have to commit to these players for the remainder of the campaign.

It could open up a short-term punt on a Bournemouth attacker, or perhaps Man City’s Rayan Cherki (£6.3m).

If you do opt for a Gameweek 33 Free Hit/Gameweek 35 Wildcard approach, you can further differentiate this week with players like Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) and Jarrod Bowen (£7.6m), who enjoy decent home matches on either side.

Get ready for Palace’s Double Gameweek

A Gameweek 35 Wildcard allows you to triple-up on Crystal Palace assets, since they are expected to ‘double’ in Gameweek 36.

We’ll know if they are still in Europe by that point, which may influence our decisions on who to invest in.

Furthermore, you can target players from teams such as Arsenal, Newcastle United and Leeds, who have some favourable fixtures in the final four Gameweeks, by which point we’ll also know each team’s motivation for the run-in.

GAMEWEEK 35 WILDCARD: THE CONS

Is the Palace ‘double’ really that appealing?

FPL notes: Sarr on pens, Sels injury + Anderson 7-pointer 4

Crystal Palace will likely face Everton (h) and Man City (a) in Gameweek 36, which isn’t the easiest of ‘doubles’ on paper, particularly if Pep Guardiola’s side are still in the title race.

The appeal of a later Wildcard also takes a hit if Palace are still in Europe, with the UEFA Conference League semi-finals set to take place on either side of Gameweek 35, which in turn would increase the risk of domestic rotation/minute management.

The Eagles are the current bookies’ favourites to win the Conference League, too.

A worse Bench Boost?

If you Bench Boost in Gameweek 36, you’ll probably be doing it with single Gameweek options, rather than ‘doublers’.

It perhaps has limited upside compared to Gameweek 33, then, when Wildcarders could get to enjoy three bench options playing twice, as well as Fernandes.

On a Gameweek 36 Bench Boost, you’ll likely be looking at cheap options from the likes of Brighton (at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers) and Aston Villa (away at Burnley).

Time running out

By the time we reach Gameweek 35, we will be very much nearing the end of the 2025/26 season, giving the Wildcard limited time to make an impact and gain rank.

By going in Gameweek 32, it at least gives you a few more rounds of fixtures to try and eke as much out of the chip as possible.

Finally, if you do choose to pursue the Gameweek 35 Wildcard approach, it is crucial to consider Blank Gameweek 34 and ensure you have enough starters without taking multiple points hits.

Was pretty set on WC32, BB33, FH34 and TC36 till last week. Now I'm not sure which of the above two approaches to go for. And on top of that, I have a big deadline coming up at work this Sunday, so haven't been able to give much time trying out team combos on the site.

Gonna be one of the trickiest decisions to make in my FPL career this.

I had built my team for WC35, so now the question for me is whether to sell Ekitike for Haaland or not. If chasing, WC35 gives more ways to attack, but if protecting rank, WC32 is more likely the way.

Rank around 150k. Would definitely like to improve it. And team looks pretty okay for 32 and can field 11 in 34 with 1 FT.

I don't know if fun factor counts, but even if WC32 template isn't very strong, every man and his dog is going to try to buy CP and Ars assets as soon as they can. Climbing ranks if needed is going to be difficult in that scenario. You will have to do the same probably.

I will be doing normal 2 transfers in GW32 possibly bringing Garner & Bowen in for Rayan & Pedro in preparation for GW32 & 34 then , FH 33,then 0-2 subs in GW34 dependent on injuries as I will have 11 players available in GW34 if no injuries due to Garner & Bowen being subbed in for GW32. Then WC GW35 involving bringing in 3x Man City, 3 x Crystal palace as well as Arsenal/Leeds/Brighton players.
Then I have changed my mind from yesterday and will likely do a TC in GW36 on Haaland or Semenyo or Sarr. Then bring in 3 players for a BB in game week 37 for a Henderson/Pickford/Gabriel/Tarkowski/Rodon/Thiaw/Van Hecke/ Rice/Wilson/B. Fernandes/ A. Gordon/ Garner/ Welbeck/ Haaland/ Bowen REALITY WILL NO DOUBT BRING ME DOWN TO EARTH WITH A BANG when i rack up injuries galore or players not performing 🙂
However i went off the WC 32 BB 33 option when Arsenal flopped out of the cup and i would have marginally preferred West Ham & Everton in the double header than Leeds & Bournemouth although I am contemplating a Bournemouth triple defence . It's just that if I now target 15 BB players for GW33 in GW32 as is alluded to in the above article, I would have 5-6 players in the Chelsea Man City game and 3 Bournemouth players against Arsenal and Leeds defender against Man Utd and no Gabrriel or B Fernandes and the only real upside would be the Brighton players. Coupled with the fact that finding 15 suitable players from the 6 teams with the fixtures they have is tricky especially as Stach/Rodon are not unknown quantities , I think i am even finding it difficult to come up with 11 that I am truly happy with.
Having said that no doubt everyone who opts for WC 32 in my mini money league will totally burn my a*s out of sight from those money positions 🙂

I’d keep with your initial plan. You can still put together a strong team in a we to cover the following GWs and having 11/12 doublers on gw33

This overhyping of Brighton assets will come back to bite many IMO. Awful team, awful manager, awful football.

Apart from a decent fixture in 32 & 36, I don't get it. Spurs (A) & Chelsea (H) in the double who are both fighting for relegation/UCL spot. Not easy games.

Van Hecke a half decent option, yet with Dunk suspended for their next 3 I can't see many (if any) clean sheets.

    Good timing

I was wondering about the merits of TC33, on Haaland, over BB with a BB36 instead?

I'm committed to wildcard32, having played it a few weeks back

But you could wait until 35 with this chip approach, if you have all your chips left.

I'd probably still FH34 for simplicity.

Basically you get Haaland twice which is quite close to playing suboptimal BB actually. However, you can get him twice also on gw36, so it's better choice on paper at least.

        Yeah

I'll probably still do it that way

But if Man City beat Arsenal and Haaland is involved in a goal or two

He's going to be well up for it against Burnley

Traditionally his hat tricks are against the weaker clubs, think he had 19 career professional hatties already.

You'd have Haaland times 3 x 2 games if he plays both in Gw33 or 36 on TC.

Is that right, Man City still need to double against Palace and Brentford at home?

Maybe that's better for TC anyhow.

      I’d go for Gabriel.

For your cheap midfielder, Hinshelwood or Gomez if you can handle the risk of 9 yellow cards.

Even Ampadu is likely to get 10-12 points over next 3 games with def con potential.

      1. Dotherightthing
        • 10 Years

I was looking at Gomez, but then I’ve gone for verbruggen, van hecke (Burnley next seems too good) Welbeck.

So it would have to be Leeds or Burnley in mid.

Ampadu could work, but Sarr has 2 decent fixtures and then should double 36…

    With 1FT , 3.6itb and plans to FH33/WC35/BB36 what should I do?

    A) Eketike > Bowen
Leaves me with 10 players for GW34 & 1FT for fielding 11, but with a 4-3-3 formation and one of them is injured Timber

    B) J. Pedro > Bowen
Leaves me with 11 players for GW34 & 1FT for more flexibility, but the risk of Ekitike not playing this week and Hill as my only bench player

    Dubravka
    Virgil, Gabriel, Thiaw
    Bruno, Semenyo, Rice, Wilson
    Eketike, J.Pedro, Thiago

    (Roefs*, Enzo*, Timber*, Hill)

    A bit more clarity now.

Team looks okay for 32. Can field XI in 34 with 1 FT. OR 152k and would like to break into 100k. Given the scenarios, which path seems better?

    A: WC32, BB33, FH34, TC36
    B: FH33, WC35, TC36, BB37/38

Who’s in your GW32 team? Mine looked good on paper but included players out of form like Mbeumo, Virgil, Rogers etc.

Other problem with FH33 is that you won’t gain any ground over WC’ers as your team will be identical to theirs, minus the bench.

Sub out Pedro for Bowen in GW 32 (this is in prep for GW 34 as well. Then FH 33 for 11 double header starters. Then in GW34 sub out 1 of your keepers for a starter keeper. Then WC 35 looking at 3x Man city, 3x Crystal Palace players as well as Arsenal/ B. Fernandes/ Brighton/ Leeds/Newcastle assets. Triple captain GW 36 on Haaland or Semenyo or even Sarr. Then BB in GW 37 with some good fixtures such as Arsenal v Burnley(Gabriel/Timber/Rice) Everton v Sunderland(Tarkovski/Pickford/Garner), Wolves v Fulham (Wilson/Anderson), Leeds v Brighton (Welbeck/Gross/Van Hecke or Stach, Rodon if you fancy Leeds), Newcastle v West Ham (Thiaw, Gordon, B Guimaraes) use your Ft's in this game week 37 to get 15 players with very good opportunities.

Thanks, this is a well-thought out strategy! I currently have 9 outfield players starting for 34. So would need an additional move as well to get 11 out. Also depends on news with Timber if I'll need another move there as well. But with 3FT banked and an extra one to come with the above strategy, I would still be okay to get to 11 for 34 and WC into 35.

Sorry sent too early... had more to say.

I like the look of FH37 as well with those fixtures you mention above. As long as the teams are still playing for something and players are still nailed.

Do you think that could pose a potential issue with the above strategy? The other way of looking at it is a WC32 would contain a lot of the players you mention in WC35 as well - 3 x City, Brighton and Leeds and Bruno. FT could then be saved and used for getting in Palace and Arsenal assets here with a BB in the double and a FH in 34 to ensure 15 players.

With that in mind do you still think the WC35 strategy above is better?

The main issue I have with WC32 is downgrading my team this week and not liking the 15 players for GW32.

          1. The Florentine assassin
            • 3 Years
            4 days, 13 hours ago

Yes the GW32 wild card would potentially mess up the game week as on paper the fixtures do not look great for W32 for the teams that double in GW33 except for Brighton and B Fernandes in theory looks good as a captain for GW32 and Bowen looks good in theory as well. Timber I think should be ok for GW34 but it is possible you will need to bring some one else in. If that is the case and you max out your FT's on GW34 then perhaps you should consider going without a keeper as the chances are small it would be worth taking a -4pt hit for a keeper.
In regards to GW37 , some players normally are committed to a good performance regardless if there is anything left to play for where as some players seem to clock out.
I Think Arsenal will still want to beat Burnley in that GW without conceding. I think B. Fernandes will play well even if nothing to play for. A player I never mentioned but if he proves fit (He will be in my FH33 squad) for GW37 then Palmer I think will be up for a good performance in the London Derby against Spurs who have a suspect defence at present. With regard to Crystal Palace assets in GW36/37 it depends on if they are still in the Europa conference league as to if league rotation is likely and is to be kept an eye on.
I for one want Fiorentina to knock them out as they are my Italian team 🙂
GW37 has some good fixtures and it could even be worth selecting at least 1 player from each matchup. so like Palmer from Chelsea spurs, Haaland against Bournemouth ( I will be getting rid , probably, 2 of my Man City assets for that week and at least 1 Crystal palace player as I think Man City come the 60 mins mark might look to rotate there squad in prep for the FA cup final (if they reach it and if they are no longer in a position to catch Arsenal)

Which team would you pick out of these for GW32 and onwards?

    Current team:

    GKP: Kelleher (Dubravka)
DEF: Gabriel, Timber, Van Dijk (Thiaw, Andersen)
MID: Fernandes, Mbeumo, Gordon, Rogers, Tavernier
    FWD: Ekitike, Thiago (Kroupi Jr.)

    WC32 team & BB33:

    GKP: Verbruggen (Darlow)
DEF: Gabriel, Van Hecke, O'Reilly (Hill, LEEDS DEF)
MID: Bruno, Palmer, Cherki, Tavernier (Rayan)
    FWD: Haaland, Pedro, DCL

(Bench boost would be Darlow, Fernandes, Gabriel, LEEDS DEF)

    FH33:
    GKP: Verbruggen (Darlow)
DEF: O'Reilly, Hill, Van Hecke (Bijol, Reinildo)
MID: Semenyo, Palmer, Neto, Tavernier (MGW)
    FWD: Haaland, Pedro, DCL

    xxxxxxx (xxxxxxx)
Gabriel, Van Hecke, O'Reilly (Hill, xxxxxxx)
    Bruno, Palmer, Semenyo, Sarr (Tavernier)
    Haaland, Pedro, Thiago

    WC team, BB33, FH34

It looks like my final decision is going to come down to

    A) Petrovic, Dúbravka, Rodon (leaves 1.1m ITB for future upgrades)
    B) Verbruggen, Darlow, Senesi

B gives me a better keeper this GW,. but does comes with the risk of both keepers blanking in GW37 (if Leeds make cup final)

      Prefer B

Not totally convinced by Tav or even Sarr at the moment

I'm not sure about Tav either but he would only play DGW33, and GW36 (if Bournemouth get a second double)

    Would you WC this lot?

Alternative is Bruno/Ekitike -> SEMENYO/HAALAND next week to give me 7 DGWers plus Thiaw (BOU), Gordon (BOU), Thiago (FUL) and Gabriel (mcy). Then TC33 (Haaland), FH34, WC35, BB36.

    VERBRUGGEN
    Gabriel, GUEHI, Thiaw
    Bruno, PALMER, Gordon, Wilson
    Ekitike, Thiago, PEDRO

    DUBRAVKA, STACH, Alderete, Keane
    Bank 3.9m, all chips

It depends on number of FT

Presumably you need to go Ekitiké to Haaland

So what does that cost you?

Generally hoarding chips isn't great but it depends what you want to do in Gw33 and 34.

Which might mean going this week on the wildcard?

Just 1FT, so I’d likely save this week if not WCing, so I could get Semenyo/Haaland for free next week.

I was looking at WC drafts for this week, and really I’d want Semenyo & Haaland and not that fussed by the rest. So is it worth it for a shoddy BB33?

Front line with a BB in mind

    Haaland
    Welbeck
    Pedro or Gyok?

Not sure I can get on board with DCL. Prefer Darlow and a Leeds defender tbh.

If you WC this week to set up for rest of season (using FH33 and BB 35), how different would it be to a WC 35?

BB in 33 doesn’t look like it’ll be huge (maybe +6 with the double game weeks assuming some rotation) and that’s easily gained this week with some of the teams and fixtures?

B - I reckon they use the Fulham game to rest Ekitike for the UCL game after and to give Isak some minutes (but I expect they will start with Gakpo)

With 1FT & plans to FH33/WC35/BB36 what should I do?

          A) Eketike > Bowen
Leaves me with 10 players for GW34 & 1FT for fielding 11, but with a 4-3-3 formation and one of them is injured Timber

          B) J. Pedro > Bowen
Leaves me with 11 players for GW34 & 1FT for more flexibility, but the risk of Ekitike not playing this week and Hill as my only bench player

          C) Enzo > Cunha
Leaves me with 11 players for GW34 & 1FT for more flexibility, and I'll likely bench J.Pedro / Eketike this week

Given Perri's mistake in the cup, surely Darlow keeps his place.

Impossible to be 100% sure it stays that way for the rest of the season, but I think there's a good chance.

I like Hill because he's a nicer price point for your bench outside of the BB.

I want to make Truffert work too because he'd be a strong differential but I think Senesi & Hill is just the better long-term play.

Thanks Moon, I initially picked Senesi + Hill because they just make sense. Was just considering Truffert for a differential.
