Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has launched for the 2026/27 season, so let the first draft team reveals begin!

This time, we hear from FPL Meerkat, who you can find here on X

The 2026/27 FPL pre-season is well underway, and I’m getting stuck in with creating drafts. Changes will happen regularly, but so far my current team has a big difference to most…

NO DEFCON DEFENDERS?

Keane or Tarkowski: who should FPL managers buy? 5

I think FPL have done a fantastic job of pricing this season. Players such as James Tarkowski (£6.0m), Marcos Senesi (£6.0m) and Maxence Lacroix (£6.0m), who were easy picks last season due to the addition of defensive contribution (DefCon) points, have received huge price rises.

This has made fitting in these players a lot trickier. Especially with the two attacking standouts from last season, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), being extremely expensive!

GOALKEEPERS

I’ve changed a lot between expensive set-and-forget keepers and rotation pairings over the years. However, this season I’m feeling pretty comfortable with Senne Lammens (£5.0m).

Manchester United boasted the third-lowest expected goals conceded (xGC) over the course of last season. They have some great opening fixtures, too. It makes Lammens a standout in the £5.0m bracket. I didn’t have enough funds for the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma (£5.5m) or David Raya (£6.0m), and I couldn’t find a £4.5m rotation pairing that I liked the look of long term.

My £4.0m goalkeeper could be anyone – hopefully a starter emerges. It’s currently Martin Dubravka, but he is never going to play, which might impact my Bench Boost later on.

DEFENDERS

How ‘The Great and The Good’ managers did in Gameweek 37

I’ve prioritised team strength over DefCon potential in the defence.

Josko Gvardiol (£5.5m) and Cristhian Mosquera (£5.5m) speak for themselves. They are cheap ways into the two best defences in the league. Enzo Maresca has reportedly said he views Gvardiol as a “central pillar” to the team, hinting that his place looks nailed on. His attacking threat has been monstrous in previous seasons – even when not playing as a left-back he has scored from set pieces. Mosquera should be a regular starter with Willian Saliba (£6.0m) out long term, as long as Arsenal don’t sign another centre back.

Michael Kayode and Vitalii Mykolenko are two £4.5m defenders who will rotate in and out with each other. Kayode is the favoured one due to his attacking potential. Ideally, I would like players such as Nathan Collins (£5.5m) and Tarkowski, but the pricing makes them difficult to acquire in this strategy.

Bobby Thomas (£4.0m) is a short-term option for Coventry City’s Gameweek 2 fixture against Hull City, but he will sit on the bench most weeks. I also like Issa Diop (£4.0m), but for my current team, I prefer the fixtures Thomas gives me.

MIDFIELDERS

Le Fee or Sarr? I want both but only have room for one

Le Fee. Good opening fixtures, Sarr is under new management. Wait and see for me.

If Trashford is back at United, that makes every single United player a worse pick. Hope Carrick dumps him into the reserves where he belongs.

I quite like this lineup in a 3-4-3, at least until the IB and inevitable WC.

    Raya
    Munoz | Porro | Shaw
Cunha | Mbeumo | MGW | Le Fee
    Haaland | Isak | Pedro

Subs: Dubravka, Van Ewijk, Diop, Hughes

The problem at the back is that you won’t be getting any Defcon points, and probably not in midfield either, so you’re really banking on Isak making up the difference. I really want Isak too but I can’t make it happen without throwing everything else out.

        Yeah I’m going Isak, it’s an itch I have to scratch even if just initially, I’m currently looking at the below;

        Kinsky
        Maguire/Calafiori/N Williams
        Boomo/Szob/Palmer/Le Fee
        Haaland/Isak/JP

        Dovin/Damsgaard/O’Shea/Van Ewijk

    Haaland, Pedro, Brobby

    Palmer, Diop, Dowell, VanEw

I think the pens swings it for DCL over Brobbey. I went Verb/Steele over Kinsky. Will Palmer and Dowell play? But overall you’ve done well to shoehorn Palmer, Bruno and Haaland into a team - I’m on this as well.

Cheers, budget tight with those three, DCL was other choice, nice juicy start for Sun.

Looked at Brighton pair, just Zerbi might actually get Spurs playing in which case Solanke’s cheap as well.

    BB GW 1 team.

FH GW 3 and WC GW 4 planned.

    Raya - Lammens
Mosquera - Calafiori - Ballard - Neco Williams - Shaw
    Bruno (c) - Palmer (vc) - Szoboszlai - Semenyo - Foden
Pedro - Igor Jesus - Brobbey

    Can’t look pass this strategy.

Get the BB out of the way and put all the money in starting XI come GW 4. Playing 4m defs help with that.

FH 3 lets me have 3 City, 3 Pool and 3 Villa vs 3 promoted teams. And then 2 other guys with good fixtures.

Cherki back late. No Rodri or Anderson to start the season either.

Gotta be Semenyo - Foden - Doku behind Haaland/Marmoush with Reijnders and kovacic as DM.

There are no ther options than Foden playing.

Cherki barely played a minute at the World Cup though. Think he absolutely starts the Community Shield, let alone GW1.

Just punting on the great fixtures for the first 2 weeks as I’m committed to an early WC.

Full pre season for them is massive as well.

Like it. Different from mine but no Halland, you've been able to spread the money better. Can i ask, have you run it through a team ranking app and seen the base score & then applied the bench boost to see what it comes out as?

I think I don't have to make too much compromise to get BB straight out of the way. It's basically

    A) Thomas, Mbeumo, 4.5 striker (no BB)
    B) Aina/Shaw, LeFee, Brobbey/Jesus (BB)

I dont watch any fpl related you tube videos but picked him in my first draft. Rationale being that he was in my team at the back end of last season and when I watched liverpool he looked like the main man. I have a dilemma now. Stick with my original choice or react to comments like this and shift him on 🙁

      Scott
Barnes - Should be nailed in NEW front 3 - Barnes not having Gordon around
      Hinshelwood

      Schade
Manzambi - WCup doesn't always translate but Villa always seems to be a top10 or better squad - Is Villa the squad to unlock Garnacho?

Messed around with a few drafts, but keep coming back to something like this:

    Raya - Leno
    Porro - Palestra - Hall - Kayode - Aina
    Gibbs-White - Rogers - Wilson - Dewsbury-Hall - Yarmoliuk
Haaland - Thiago - João Pedro

I like to have some logic behind my selection, and this season I'm thinking about the number of teams playing in Europe and the increased risk of rotation that may bring.

That's not particularly a concern in goal, so I've taken Raya as a way into the Arsenal defence. And I wanted 1 premium to basically perma-cap, so I'm hoping that Haaland will be fairly rotation-proof. But other than that, I've opted for players from teams who are not in Europe, with the expectation that they will usually play the full 90 each week.

I like to have a playing bench so that I can rotate players around a bit based on fixtures, but Yarmoliuk is in there as a cheap (5.0) midfield enabler who will generally stay on my bench unless needed. Leno could be any 4.5 really, I've chosen him at the moment due to his low ownership so less concern about his value dropping. But I need to see if there is one who has good fixtures when Raya has tough ones. He will be swapped for a playing 4.0 keeper if one emerges, anyway.

And, as you can tell, I still like attacking full backs. The changes to bonus points will even things up a bit this season, and I'd rather be looking out for goals/assists than defcons - just a personal preference, and one which will probably come back to bite me, but it does also help avoid the template picks which I think is more fun.

While I like the logic behind no Europe, perma captain and full backs breaking up the template, that midfield just isn't gonna cut it. If you could get Wilson up to a United mid, then maybe.

I could gain some funds by having Fernandes as my premium instead of Haaland, of course. Something like:

        Haaland, Rogers, Yarmoliuk
        to
Fernandes, Palmer, Solanke/DCL with 0.5 left in the bank

Thiago is way overpriced. He's a crap player who had the run of a lifetime. Sell him and upgrade Wilson and I really like your team

I expect I'll wildcard fairly early so involvement in European football is largely irrelevant in my gw1 squad.
I do agree with your comments about full backs, much more exciting but as you say it'll probably cost you over defcons.

Is Harry Wilson worth the extra 0.5 over Okafor?

Not having to tinker with FPL draft is liberating.
