Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 5 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) fast approaching, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

There were mixed fortunes in Gameweek 4 for the most popular captain picks, with Erling Haaland (£15.6m) and Joao Pedro (£7.8m) delivering nine- and 12-point hauls, respectively. Cole Palmer (£9.7m) managed only an assist, however, while Alexander Isak (£9.1m) blanked at home to Fulham.

Now that the Manchester derby is out of the way, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Haaland return to the forefront of our minds. Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest, Everton and Newcastle United host the three newly promoted teams, while Pedro is a serious injury doubt for Chelsea.

So, is it worth looking beyond Haaland at the Etihad for the captaincy in FPL Gameweek 5? That’s what we’re considering in this week’s ‘Captain Sensible’ article.

First, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In a throwback to last season, Haaland holds a commanding lead in the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll, boasting well over 50% backing. The Norwegian has scored in each of the last three Gameweeks, claiming maximum bonus points on each occasion.

Morgan Gibbs-White (£8.0m) sits second, with just over 12% of the vote share ahead of Nottingham Forest’s home fixture against bottom-of-the-table Coventry City. Nearly 470,000 managers have transferred in the Englishman ahead of Gameweek 5.

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Chelsea duo Palmer and Pedro. Both players returned against Hull City last weekend, although the injury uncertainty swirling around the Brazilian surely rules him out of consideration.

Maybe one day the brightest minds in the world will invent the ability to edit a comment and correct a single letter typo on a website. I know it's a foolish pipe dream but we put a man on the moon and maybe just maybe if we get some international collaboration with China and the US it could happen.

            That is just ridiculous.

I'm not the one who rules out every conspiracy theory just cause they are labelled as one, most are false but some could potentially be false. But what are your reasons for why you think the moon landing didn't happen?

This whole JJ Gabriel situation at Man U is why you should never appease an egotistical cnt (the father right now but the son will be going the same way, surrounded by selfish turds from an early age).

By all accounts this kid is good but the father's demands are still ridiculous. Putting his kid above all the other youngsters, just only caring about themselves. Man United have been doing a ton to appease them but its never enough for these kinds of people. Its not worth it, trash people have 0 loyalty anyway, dont understand the concept of reciprocity and will take the first perceoved better opportunity that comes along with no second thought. Waste of resources that could be going towards other kids with team player mentalities (think Martin Odegaard for instance for a father/son team that are actually good people).

The father got very annoyed that his 15 YEAR OLD kid, who's built like a 12 year old btw, didn't get to play in the first CL match of the season and then all of this kicked off.

Also the father made it very difficult last season as well, where MU had to do everything possible to keep JJ.

It's like what Noel said about his brother when talking about Nirvana. Sometimes they need to do a bit of work!

"Oasis wouldn't have been so heavy if it hadn't been for Nirvana. When we started out we sounded more like the Stone Roses circa the first album, but getting older and taking more drugs and listening to Neil Young more and Nirvana, that's what did it - Yeah, get that knob up to eleven, turn up the bass, turn down the vocals and make him shout, the lazy c*!"

I still kinda like him. I have him rotating as the 7th attacker.

Early transfers and stepped away. Does this lineup still work. Assume Pedro out so Sangare will come on

    0FT, nothing in the bank

    Kinsky
    Muharemovic, Gvardiol, Calafiori, Davis
    Bruno, MGW, Tzolis
    Haaland, DCL, Pedro

    Verbruggen, Sangare, Gomez, Shaw

My FPL Wizards! Anyone has any views on King as a player? Honestly I don't watch Fulham at all but tried assessing him from recent highlights. He does seem to see a lot of the ball when Fulham attack, and also confident enough to take shots even if outside of the box. But he's not on any set pieces and Fulham's attack seem rather toothless at the moment.

Would you go for him considering the fixtures or is Iwobi the safer bet? Or just play it safe and go for a defcon player like sangare. Thanks guys!

I'm not convinced yet that any Fulham player is really worth it as a FPL asset.

Maybe Leno as a rotating keeper or one of their 4.5 defenders as your 4th/5th choice defender for their nice upcoming fixtures?

Any move for a Fulham attacker feels like punt based on hope.

Yes definitely more of a punt because I have hinshelwood dead weight in my team, so I'll need to make the transfer regardless to a cheap mid.

The only other fire would be shaw cos if he doesn't play, I have 2 other defenders who might not feature too

He's underlying numbers are really strong (with tough fixtures). I was considering as foden replacemtn for next few weeks.

That's why I'm considering him, especially against a leaky man u defense

Problem is competition for midfield spots in our teams.
Co many good options this season and a lot of great cheap picks.

If you absolutely want Fulham player for their run maybe try to go Gonzalo?

Interesting you brought up Garcia, doesn't seem to pass the eye test as much as king and 0.5m more expensive and takes up a fwd slot. Is he on pens at least?

He scored in the first game.
          Not sure about pens.

The reason I suggested him is that I feel like the 3rd forward spot is the one to play with as there is fewer good forward options than midfield.

Totally fair point, never thought of it that way. I could do dcl to garcia, just that I have other fires to put out and only have 1 FT

Never had gross and hurts to not get his points, but it feels like I've missed the gravy train for him and shouldn't chase points. You're right that this'll be a ST play

Best move for this week? Pedro injury is annoying as I was hoping to roll my transfer.

    Kinsky
    Calafiori Konsa Hall
    Palmer Rogers Odegaard Barnes
    Haaland Isak Pedro

    Leno, De Cuyper, Hemmings, Egan

    3FT, 1.0 itb

A - Roll and play one of my bench (if so, who?)
B - De Cuyper to Gvardiol
C - Isak & Hemmings to MGW and Barry

Many ways you can go about this. I'm not hating any of those options. With 3ft I think you can be a bit aggressive. B looks like a good long term move

Yeah it's a quandary how to play this week.

You're right - having the transfers does allow me to be a bit aggressive.

The original plan was to do 2FT in GW6 and to bring in a high value midfielder with Isak downgraded to 6m striker but think it may be better to bring it forward a gameweek earlier, do option C, and have two very good options to play for this week to cover the Pedro injury.

I would do B. Feels like Isak could return while everyone is piling on MGW, which is never a good sign based on fpl superstition haha!

Yeah there are similar vibes to when everyone was scrambling to get Cherki in for GW3 also against Coventry.

Do think MGW will be a good asset going forward though as he's talismanic for his team and on pens.

De Cuyper to Gvardiol does feel like the safest option this week and seems to be the popular choice.

WC played last week. Now have 3ft and 0.1itb

    Raya
    Calafiori Konsa Muharemovic
    Palmer Rogers MGW Szobo
    Haaland Barry Pedro*

    4.0; Gross, DeCuyper, Mendy*

    A. Pedro -> Gonzalo
    B. Szobo -> KDH
    C. Roll

Mega tempted by Pedro -> Gonzalo since I plan on bringing Pedro back GW7 for Barry.

    1. The Tonberry

      I would roll.

Gross isn't the worst option if he had to start. He's on pens and just had a great gameweek before.

Would keep Pedro instead of using 2 FTs selling and getting him back. Pretty essential player to have. So B

I also understand this. But it is 2 transfers over 3 gameweeks. Feel like there are points to be had by selling now and looking for alternatives. I'm like 80% sure I will roll and it is the most sensible move but the temptation is there.

Probably WC next GW with this messy lot, thinking of selling White for max. 6.0 defender.

Who would you go for for probably just this week?

    Kinsky
    Calafiori White Eagan
    Bruno Mbeumo Tzolis Rogers
    Haaland DCL Pedro

    Verbruggen Thomas Slater van Erwijk

1 FT and 0.4 in the bank, know Thomas probably comes in for in for injured Pedro

Munoz or Gvardiol. With only 1ft in the bank I think it is also ok to just roll. Egan will likely get defcon again so he is good to start

But also have White, who probably won´t start, so defo playing Eagan and both Thomas and one of Slater and van Erwijk will also have to come in.

oh sorry I didn't notice you had White in starting 11. Yeah then just sell for Munoz as 1 week punt. If you weren't wildcarding I'd have preferred Gvardiol

My defence is ok but feeling like my attack is a bit stale. Only 1FT

    Verbruggen
Calafiori Konsa Hall De Cuyper Egan
    Palmer Rogers Szob* Odegaard* 4.5
    Haaland Isak* Pedro*

    A. Wildcard, and switch to a 3-5-2

    B. Take a hit to get in MGW e.g. Szob to MGW and downgrade Isak, Pedro or Odegaard now.

    C. Roll

With only 1ft I'd just roll. No need to wildcard yet and personally I don't think it makes sense just before a long international break. So just roll and wildcard after the deadline
