Gameweek 31’s swansong didn’t disappoint, serving up six goals in a frenzied clash between two sides battling to beat the drop. Christian Benteke stole the headlines with a hat-trick for the Villains, while Matthew Phillips and Charlie Austin vindicated those managers that invested in QPR coverage for their double.

Benteke hat trick salvages point for Villains

Christian Beneteke’s dramatic upturn in form continued against QPR last night he bagged a hat trick for Aston Villa in a 3-3 thriller. After restoring parity with a deflected shot three minutes after Matthew Phillips’ opener, Benteke showed calmness to outfox Robert Green in a one-on-one situation before drawing the hosts level with a pinpoint curling free kick seven minutes from time.

Among all the league’s forwards, only Olivier Giroud in his last match managed more attempts on target (four) than the Belgian marksman (three), while only Andrej Kramaric and Romelulu Lukaku (four) created more chances for their team-mates than Benteke (three). Furthermore, no striker recorded more touches in the opposition‘s half (67) than the former Genk hitman this Gameweek, underlining how central he was to Villa’s attacking threat.

Having scored just three goals in 16 league appearances prior to Tim Sherwood’s arrival at Villa Park, Benteke has now notched seven times in his last five starts for the Villains. Remarkably, he’s now just one strike shy of his 10-goal haul last term with six fixtures to play, despite experiencing such a wretched first two-thirds of the season.

Working counter to Benteke’s pursuit of further attacking returns is the West Midlanders’ short-term schedule. A trip to White Hart Lane this weekend is followed by a blank Gameweek 33 and a visit to Stamford Bridge, though bearing in mind that Spurs have failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous six home clashes, the big Belgian will fancy his chances as Sherwood looks to get one over his former side. Villa then finish the season with three home clashes which will prove decisive in their bid to beat the drop, with Everton, West Ham and Burnley all paying visit from Gameweek 35 onwards.

Sherwood named five changes to the side that succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford last time out. Jack Grealish and Leandro Bacuna were drafted in for the injured Scott Sinclair and Alan Hutton, while Andreas Weimann and Charles N’Zogbia made way for Jack Grealish and Tom Cleverly, with the former Tottenham head coach reverting to a 4-3-3 set-up. In defence, Ron Vlaar took up his post in central defence for the first time since sustaining a calf muscle strain in Gameweek 26.

Gabriel Agbonlahor, N’Zogbia, and Fabian Delph grabbed an assist apiece on the night, offering the former’s 32,000 new owners something to cheer about having watched his strike partner chalk up four goals in Villa’s double.

Phillips and Austin deliver again

Matthew Phillips put a smile on the faces of the 22,000 managers that took a punt on the Scottish winger for the R’s double, complementing his assist against the Baggies with a goal and a further two assists. The 4.6-priced midfielder has profited immensely from Chris Ramsey’s installation as the Hoops manager, notching two goals and seven assists in eight starts.

Phillips continues to be the primary creative force in QPR’s midfield, as evidenced by the fact only Eden Hazard (seven), Jesus Navas (six) and Steven Davis (five) engineered more chances than he did (four) in each player’s last match-up. Accounting for both fixtures in QPR’s double, Phillips tops the midfielder rankings with regards to chances created (eight) and sits second (16) behind Navas (17) in terms of attempted crosses.

Not to be outdone, Charlie Austin finished from close range in the 78th minute to give the visitors a short-lived 3-2 lead, boosting his points tally to 21 for the Gameweek – second only to Benteke’s 23. Austin’s exploits in QPR’s double have put him within five points of (161) of the league’s highest-performing forward, Harry Kane (166), this campaign, yet his 22% ownership still lags behind the likes of Sergio Aguero – who’s drawn blanks in his last five outings.

QPR now embark on a perilous run of four fixtures (CHE, WHU, liv, mci) that would appear, at first glance, to diminish Austin’s appeal. However, it’s worth noting that the former Burnley frontman scored in the reverse ties against Chelsea and Manchester City, and also netted in both ties against the likes of Arsenal – illustrating his potential for strong returns beyond the London club’s blank Gameweek 33.

Ramsey made two alterations to the XI that thrashed West Brom 4-1 on the weekend, calling up Niko Kranjcar and Clint Hill for the injured Eduardo Vargas and Suk-Young Yun. Hill marked his first 90-minute stint for the R’s since Gameweek 24 with a headed goal from a Phillips corner early in the second half. Bobby Zamora rounded off a productive double with an assist to partner his goal at The Hawthorns.

Anyone who got more than one double gameweek player overdid it in my opinion and got seriously lucky that they scored so well in both fixtures whereas if you didn't get one like myself you probably over estimated how good the West Brom and United defences are at keeping clean sheets. Anyone disagree with that?

We could just as easily be here discussing how bad the DGW players did. Just because they got 20+ doesn't mean it was a correct decision to get a ll 3.

As Bonz pointed out before the GW started, there looked to be a lot of tight games, so Villa QPR would be important to pick up fpl points in. Turns out he wasnt far off the mark.

Hmmm...possibly. I think those that got more than one dgw player in had to chance their arm. That's the beauty of the dgws.

You don't know the result beforehand though. You can only base decision making off of the information you have, for example, nothing pointed to QPR thrashing West Brom.

No-one could have foreseen what happened. I was expecting two points from Austin in the first game & some involvement in 1/2 goals in the second. I would have preferred having Benteke for the double, but wasn't going to be getting him in as would have wanted rid afterwards. The other DGW I would have wanted was Phillips...but would have needed to have dropped a big midfielder. . .

Wouldn't say overestimated West brom, Austin has such a high goal involvement % that always was a risk not having him. It was more
        A) Who to drop
        B) What to do after the gameweek
All thing considered don't think it was bad not to have him, just how the cookie crumbled.
        * A&B apply to Benteke too

I only had Austin and count myself lucky. The fact is somewhere down the line we get lucky (or unlucky) with our picks, but those who weighed I heavily with DGW players gave themselves a chance by being in it to win it...all of is who didn't had no chance of getting lucky....nil.

Agree for the most part. Does remind me that it's usually the DGWs involving 2 'lesser' teams that are most worth investing in as the majority don't own the players (i.e. Benteke) and they're often goal fests.

That was my thinking aswell . I had Austin and Hutton already and I knew that if I brought in another dgw player I would need to take a hit for 33 . I figured Aguero + 4 points was a much better option than Benteke - 4 . I also figured I would want Aguero for 33 with his home game vs West Ham he would be a stand out captaincy option . Still plenty of double gameweeks to go so keep going

    12. Ruth_NZ
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 10 months ago

      It's a bit more subtle.

Many who had Austin got him for the DGW in GW28. They then got super lucky because the GW33 game was re-scheduled earlier than it was originally due to be played (which doesn't often happen). They therefore got 2 DGWs for the price of one with no intervening blank. After that, captaining Austin this week was easy. Bringing him in if you didn't have him was a harder call to make with Chelsea-Blank to follow.

DGW28 cost me at the time and it cost me even more heavily in GW31 as a knock-on effect. Them's the breaks I guess. But it has put my OR right back to where it was in GW24. 🙁

Not sure I agree. Certainly I thought Villa and QPR would be high scoring (hence the captaincy of Austin as I felt he was the best pick) so I would have understood others bringing in someone like Tekkers or Phillips given his attacking nature.

My rank isn't good enough to be worried about a 22% ownership tbh. His fixtures are pretty crap, I agree, so I'm going to mull it over as it would be entirely plausible for him to score against Chelsea as that is the kind of stuff that happens.

The lad has scored 17 goals in the PL this season. And that is despite playing for a rubbish side. I had owned him for weeks before the DGW but to be honest I don't see how a player like that with a DGW was ignored.

Austin can score against anyone. It's down to the service he receives. QPR were dominated by AV but still managed to create opportunities. So, I wouldn't write Austin off, even against Chelsea. Still, I'll probably bench him.

But I suppose the point is that in a DGW if you predict a player will score lots of points it is irrelevant which game it happens to come in. I agree the West Brom and United returns were not expected for Austin or Tekkers, but overall Austin wound up scoring near enough where I had hoped him to score (had actually thought he could get a hattie against Villa and possibly just an assist against WBA).

Just because it happened doesn't make it right. Aguero and Kane performed massively under expectation and the DGW players performed massively above it however the risk of not getting one of them was too great and I should have bought one.

I wasn't sold on the double prospects of Villa and WBA, but from my experience knew that anything could happen with games in quick succession. Took a calculated punt on Giroud>Benteke to get a nailed on 180min striker in good personal form + on pens with a favourable home fixture.

Decided not to half arse it, and went all the way with Benteke(c).

But yes, I was very close to not buying a ticket to this lottery.

i would argue kanes been incredibly lucky all season but maybe others have judged his potential better than me. There is no realy way of determining it other than looking at his record which would prove me wrong. Same is the case here, benefitnof doubt goes to the one that comes out victorious

I thought aguero was lucky to get 4 against spurs (2 of tjem being oenos) did anyone expect him to get 4? No. But if you go with thise with potential you are bound to get morenthan expected quite often

haha now u are calling people lucky? thats pretty sour imo..

u create your own luck..people normally are too afraid to get away from the norm..so give credits to people who take the chance.

utd defense has always known to concede a goal, villa now getting more attacking with benteke getting abit of form b4 the dgw..austin has always been there and qpr is ready to fight for their lives..

u are probably right about their defense..none of their players did well there..but austin phillips benteke..not so poor options as people try to convince themselves about. and the fact still lies..people need to get rid of them for the blanks.

I'm not sure why so many people don't value DGWs. I don't remember ever having a bad one. All my 100+ point GWs have been from doubles. It's not hard to pick who the likely lads are, and even if you are unsure, FFS has been doing articles before hand to point them all out to us.

The more DGWers you have the higher the chance that one of them will have the sort of big score that propels you up the rankings. A hard thing to achieve when we all have template teams. Then its down to planning transfers, minimising hits and, of course, choosing a DGW captain.

Sure, this week was tricky with the blanks around the corner but there were three stand out DGW options. Many already had Austin. Phillips could replace the 5th mid without affecting a team much; so why not if you don't have a pressing transfer? And Benteke, he was a must IMO. Great form, less than 3% ownership and playing for a team bent on attack. I resisted going for all three but am mystified at so many not even going for one.

Torn. If I was going to move Austin on itd be for remy Murray or gomis

But the Chelsea defence isn't that great. Can see Austin scoring and get the chance to see how Remy does for next week.

Don't think Costa is going to bounce back.
