Having started the 2013/14 campaign at Chelsea, Ryan Bertrand would only make one appearance for the Blues before moving on loan to Aston Villa in the January transfer window. The defender made 16 starts for Paul Lambert’s struggling side, registering only three shut-outs.

Before the beginning of last term, Bertrand would find himself on the move once more, with Southampton signing the left-back on a season-long loan. The Saints had kept 15 clean sheets in the previous campaign, so Bertrand was immediately thrust into the Fantasy limelight, priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as the season got under way.

Despite losing Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers, Southampton’s defensive unit once again delivered for Fantasy managers under new boss Ronald Koeman, with new recruits Fraser Forster and Toby Alderweireld, along with Bertrand, helping the Saints register 15 shut-outs once again – a total bettered by only Chelsea (17) and West Brom (16).

Southampton conceded 33 goals last term, helping them to the second best defensive record in the league, with champions Chelsea letting in just 32. Bertrand finished the season as the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL with 140 points, considerably more than he had totalled across his four previous years. In January, Southampton made Bertrand’s loan move permanent, with the left-back joining for £10m on a four-and-a-half year deal.

THE STATISTICS

It took little time for Koeman to stamp his mark on the Saints’ new-look backline, with his side keeping three clean sheets in their first five matches, before registering four consecutive shut-outs between Gameweek 8 and 11.

After such a fine start to the season, the Saints struggled to maintain their early resilience, though they did manage eight more shut-outs by the middle of April following a 2-0 win against Hull in Gameweek 32. That was to be their final clean sheet of the season though, with 11 goals conceded in their final six matches.

Bertrand benefitted from the revamped Bonus Points System, which rewarded attacking full-backs more this season, picking up 13 bonus points. That’s less than team-mates Jose Fonte (16) and Nathaniel Clyne (15), although Bertrand did miss two of Southampton’s clean sheets due to a three-match suspension following his red card against Swansea in Gameweek 23. The left-back scored twice and provided three assists last season, highlighting his attacking prowess.

THE PROSPECTS

Bertrand finished the season priced at 5.8 in FPL, having peaked at 5.9 during the final month of the campaign. Given that Fonte started last season valued at 5.5 after Southampton kept 15 clean sheets in 2013/14, we can expect Bertrand to be priced at a minimum of 5.5, with a hike to 6.0 more than possible.

The left-back averaged 4.1 points per appearance, the same as Clyne, with Fonte (3.8) managing slightly less, so it would seem more than likely that all three will find themselves in the same price bracket next time around. That is, of course, if Clyne remains at St Mary’s, with the England international heavily linked with a move away from the south-coast club with just a year left on his contract.

With Toby Alderweireld uncertain to return to Southampton following his season-long loan, Koeman will have to bring in some new faces in defence. Having recruited so well last summer, the chances of the Southampton rearguard being strong once again next season look high, though.

Of Saints’ 15 clean sheets, 11 came at home – a tally only matched by Chelsea – with eight of those against sides in the bottom half of the league. Delivering in plum home fixtures is a huge plus for any Fantasy prospect, although the Saints’ inability to pick up defensive returns on the road is a concern, given that a price hike is on the cards. Their total of four away shut-outs was on a par with Leicester and Hull, for example, and half the number delivered by West Brom.

As mentioned in the Nathaniel Clyne article, our assessment of Southampton’s defence may well depend on Koeman’s choice of keeper in the continued absence of Fraser Forster. Both Kelvin Davis and Paulo Gazzaniga will undoubtedly be cheaper than the likes of Bertrand and if either can nail down a role as the Saints’ temporary number one for the first few months of the season, they may well prove a far more popular pick as we look to save on budget at the back.

    GW21.

Sanchez v Stoke or Hazard v Newcastle.

That was season defining for me. The really big 50/50s didn't go my way. Interesting, looking back over each GW.

I am a Milner fan but I'd prefer Emre Can in the starting XI. Kovacic is very talented and would cost at least 25m. Beneteke has a 32.5m release clause so we shouldn't even consider signing him at all. I guess I'd be alright with Clyne though.

Henderson would be completely wasted as a DM. Surely should be Can and then Hendo in for one of Milner/Kovacic or, more realistically, in for sick note Sturridge. Also not sure such a system would be any good for Benteke.

He's certainly not been as good outside of his home country, but that's true of everyone. 24 wickets in the 2010 Ashes in Australia is nothing to be sniffed at. He's is a different proposition when it swings, so obviously the conditions are a big factor, but he's a fine, fine bowler.

He had said "keep going straight until I say otherwise" then he got me to this ridiculous junction where there were two 'straights' almost like a fork, but split right down the middle. And then he gave me a serious fault for picking the wrong straight!

Ideal starting XI for United next term:

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Valdes - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    Alves - - - - Smalling - - - - - - - - Varane - - - Shaw
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Carrick - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    - - - - - - - Herrera - - - - - - - - - - - Di Maria - - - - -
    - - Mata - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Depay - -
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rooney - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Subs: Johnstone, McNair, Nigel De Jong, Januzaj, Young, Fellaini, Hernandez.

 While it is perhaps unrealistic to ask for both Varane and Dani Alves, either would be fantastic signings.
 I think LVG missed a trick allowing Juventus to sign Khedira, would have been a brilliant addition, but De Jong on a free can act as back-up for Carrick.
 I don't think a new striker is needed. A look at Hernandez's international record (39 goals in 72 games) shows his quality as a squad player, while James Wilson can be developed and hopefully become a regular in the future. Similarly, LVG will look to blood Januzaj and Andreas Pereira, two exciting attacking prospects.
 United need a match-winner in the ilk of Hazard or Bale. However, rather than signing the latter, LVG should build his side around Di Maria: play him every week in whatever position he wants, give him license to roam where he likes without defensive responsibility, and let him know he is the best player at the club. Do this, and maybe we will see the player who, this time last year, was seen by many as the third best player in the world.

    Thoughts?

Varane will be close to impossible. So would Alves.

But other than him, that could make quite an interesting first team with a semi strong bench.

Yeah I'm not holding my breath on Varane, they'd be crazy to let him go, but worth and inquiry anyway. Gonna be the best defender for the next decade I reckon. Alves looks a real possibility though: he's pretty much admitted that he is set to leave Barca, with PSG the favourites ahead of United, but last week he said PSG was not a possibility. Probably 3/1 IMO.

David de Gea is the reason behind your defense. He's world class.

Of course De Gea would be a big loss - you're right, he is world class. But Valdes spent 12 years at arguably the greatest club side in history, with one of the best save percentages in Europe. He's 33, usually a keeper peaks around this age. As for 'only 3 players defending' - that's the biggest nonsense I've heard in a while. Defending is a team effort for one thing - one of Liverpool's greatest strengths last season was the pressing of Suarez and Sterling. By your logic, Real Madrid play with 2 defenders and what you probably think is a poor Spanish keeper, yet they seem to do alright. Anyway, Shaw's greatest asset is his defending in the wide channels, Alves is as tenacious as he is determined, and Herrera's stats compare favourably with most defensive midfielders. As good as De Gea is, his loss would not render Van Gaal's philosophy redundant.

Liverpool had the best number 9 in the world in Suarez. Madrid have Ronaldo. Both teams were always going to outscore opponents. And funnily, both teams didn't win the league because of their defences. And Man United don't have a player near the calibre of Suarez/Ronaldo.

I think they'll go out and get a good striker and a couple of others. They have the team already, Mourinho will have learned from this season, and just finish off the team.

You can't win the CL with a RW / RAM who doesn't assist and doesn't score goals. Chelsea were too reliant on Hazard last season but got away with it. Having a Reus would make a massive difference to their team.

There aren't many as far as the league goes, but surely now they have to look to compete in the Champions League, and they have a fair bit of work to reach Madrid/Juve/Bayern. I'm not sure you can really match Barcelona, they simply have too good an attack - you can't go out and buy another Messi - but I'm sure Mourinho will try to improve as a unit. He'll want to strengthen to allow them to possibly compete with Barcelona over 2 legs.

As you say, I think they need a central midfielder - Fabregas and Matic is too lightweight in Europe. Cover for Costa is imperative, and you'd think a winger, but they've only just bought Cuadrado, so we probably need to see what he can do in his first season. Mourinho will like Willian because he does a good defensive job, but his end product needs work.

Zouma will be a world class defender, but Terry and Ivanovic aren't getting any younger. A centre back and full back, if Filipe Luis leaves, should be targeted.

This is coming from someone with very little knowledge of their youth side though. It would be great to see Mourinho bring through some academy graduates, but in a business that is increasingly about immediate results, that could be tricky.

The one real blot on Mourinho's CV, other than possibly not staying at a club for more than 3 years, is a lack of academy players he's really brought through. Would be really nice to see him do that.

I think the only issues were no solid CAM and a lack of output from RM as well as no solid back up ST. Also our defenders are aging and Mou might want to plan for the future. Getting 2/3 of these players would solve those problems:

        Koke/varane/icardi/lacazette/clyne

    Arsenal and Manchester United Appraisal

As some will know, I am compiling a series of articles reviewing the PL teams from a FPL perspective, looking back on last season while it is fresh in the mind and forward towards the next.

Rather than positing the (lengthy) drafts here for feedback I would just like to ask for comments in advance, especially from supporters of the various teams who know them well. I will integrate some of these comments into the articles as they come out.

    Basically the format is:

    1. General team review - strengths, weaknesses and trends (likely differences next season)
    2. Player review - GK and defender options good and bad
    3. Player review - midfielder options good and bad
    4. Player review - striker options good and bad
    5. Overall summary

If you have comments to offer about particular teams please be invited to post them here. The next 2 articles underway are Arsenal and Man. United so maybe we could start with those? Thanks in advance.

      United

      1. + de gea, smalling, mata, young
      - rest of the team
      2. De gea and smalling, rest were absolutely useless
      3. ADM had a good...5 games, Mata and young standout players towards end of season
      4. No comment
      5. They were terrible. No consistent players apart from de gea, who was useless FPL wise.

Arsenal defenders: which full-backs are nailed on, and stats on Kosh (would have scored as much as Ivanovic with the same minutes). Perhaps a look at Ozil... Walcott's recovery and likely game time.
United: Shaw's attacking threat, Di Maria's prospects.

i dont know if this is possible this early but maybe they could include an element of prospective signing, probably narrowed down to realistic ones rather than peoples desires.
of the top of my head maybe something along the lines of gaps in teams and if they signed player x the predicted impact. So if say spurs weakness is against teams with talent through the middle then a matic style signing could have big impact. That is really simple example but as i say it is just off top of head.
Just felt the chelsea one didnt tell me anything i didnt already know and you kinda suggested everyone is a good buy for next year, which based on chelsea performance this year is an easy conclusion to come to.

Interesting, the Chelsea one narrows it down quite tightly for me. I guess it depends what you are looking for. But I'm guessing you are a Chelsea fan so will be more on top of the Chelsea situation than some may be.

In any case, by incorporating some community comments rather than just presenting my own views it won't come out as "recommendations by Ruth_NZ" and it's not supposed to.

      United

      1) Carrick - he is the key to everything. Plus DDG. Our defenders for the most part are error/injury prone or both, though Smalling improved immensely in the latter weeks of the season.

      2) DDG is nailed and will get save points. If he retains his place next season Smalling is the pick of the defenders. Has a decent goal threat and tends to pick up BAPs in the event of a CS (he's always been there or there abouts, only a booking cost him v Hull)
      3) If nailed. Mata is proven FPL gold and has set pieces and pens, jury is out on ADM. Herrera could be the dark horse
      4) Nothing to see here
      5) Unless we get a decent run of games or someone finds form, I'd only consider Smalling or Herrera atm.

Here's my bit to consider - on Mata.

Mata looks key next season, should he escape rotation and he find someone willing to convert his many chances. From Gameweek 20 to the end of the season he created the most chances (26) among Manchester United’s ranks, took the most corners (34) and the fourth highest amount of crosses (behind Young, Di Maria and Valencia).

But with all that effort he accrued just one assist over that time. With four goals over that period he is clearly a threat, but the bread and butter of a midfielder for Fantasy managers has to be assists and Mata did not get enough. He’s one to keep an eye on in pre season to see if anyone will be willing to boost his assist count. For Mata assists are especially important. This was a player that notched up an incredible 34 assists over two seasons (2011/12 and 2012/13). Fantasy Football managers are crying out for a good ManU midfield option and it would be great if Mata could be that man.

A cheap Mata with pens is an enticing prospect. But he may have to battle with the likes of Di Maria for a spot. I wouldn't start GW1 with him, but one to monitor imo.

        .
For those expecting Di Maria to leave, Rojo has hinted that he's staying:

Rojo - “I’m taking some English classes with Di Maria. Although to be honest, I have to say we laugh more than learn in those classes sometimes. But we are both really interested to learn more of the language here. I have adapted quickly to life in the Premier League and I love it."

The danger with interpreting Mata's stats like this, is that I think you are doing him a massive favour. You may think he should have assist more in recent games, but he was certainly fortunate to score so many.

Mata has one of the highest shot conversion rates in the league this season, he took 33 shots, with 12 shots on target, and ended up scoring nine goals. With a total goal threat of 450 this season, his expected goals is are around 4 or 5.

Even looking at his chances created, I think you are being fairly generous, 4 assists from 50 chances created, is within the normal range of 0.07 - 0.13 assists per chance created. Yes some players usually rise above or below this range (I think Cazorla and Fàb did this year), but Silva, Özil, Sánchez and Hazard (and many others) all fell inside this range.*

*Note I am talking about Opta assist which are more relevant to chance creation. (Not fantasy assists, which include things like penalties won)

His goal conversion is another issue and one worth exploring. My point is that mata shouldn't just be matching the likes of Ozil he should be exceeding th. Like Fabregas mata is capable of much more assist wise. Also one assist in 26 chances equates to around two in 50 not 4.

Over the season, he has 4 assists from 50 chances created. I agree with 26 chances created you should expect 2 or 3 assists, but I don't think this would make him a must have.

Certainly an option worth considering though, I wasn't slating Mata, I just thought your assessment was good but also quite generous. 🙂

How many more assists do you think Eriksen should have? 😀 (I think that's to do with playing with Chadli and Lamela though.)

      Hi Ruth,

Nice work with Chelsea and Man City. I will give my view on Arsenal below:

      1. Strengths: Always plays as a team, both defending and attacking. Concedes few chances although when they do they tend to be big ones. Scores a lot when the opponent are not 100% focused.
Weaknesses: Often gets bullied in big games. Can get frustrated when facing a physical team, especially away from home.
Trends: Mr Wenger have strengthen the offence quite a bit and almost all offensive players are rotation risks. I expect that he will buy two good defensive players and then there will be good competition for places throughout the team. It will be important to find the nailed players in Arsenal next season.

      2. GK: Bad options only, they don´t accumulate lot of saving points and Ospina is not nailed if he has two bad games in a row. Defenders: An Arsenal defender is a must since they get a lot of bonus points with 0-0 and 1-0 scorelines. Koscielny is the most nailed one, the others are rotation risks. Bellerin was fantasy gold this season but will face though competition from Debuchy. Mertesacker will be dropped if he plays poor and both Gabriel and Debuchy can challange his position. LB is 50/50.

      3. Özil and Ramsey are my favorites next year, of course depending on price but they should both be nailed together with Alexis. Özil will benefit of a proper pre-season now. Walcott can bang in goals but he needs to show some consistency first.

      4. Giroud will never score 20+ goals in the league I´m afraid, there are better options elsewhere. He can be transferred in if he shows form and face easy opposition. Personally I would love to see Walcott nail the striker role, then he would be captain material.

      5. Arsenal will challenge for the title next year if they can strengthen defensively (Subotic? Khedira?). Even without additions they will be up there if the squad is fit. This year Debuchy, Wilshere and Walcott were injured for long spells and Gabriel was brought in mid year. Fantasy wise I would advise to have at least 2 players from them.

      Greetings from Sweden!

Thanks, very useful. Ospina has the highest saves per goal percentage in the PL, however, so he may not be such a bad option depending on price. If he comes in around 5.0 as in the season just finished he'll be a very popular choice I'd say.

Wayne Rooney - His season has been disrupted by position changes because of injuries, so may get a price drop to 10.0m. With a new DM signing, Rooney(C) should be nailed in attack. LvG has said that is his best position: http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/438717/Louis-van-Gaal-have-realised-that-Wayne-Rooney-best-position-attack I smell a bargain.

10m would make things interesting, might start with same front three as last season if the south Americans are too knackered for first couple of GW's:

      1. LVG took a while to establish his philosophy and it took the team a while to adjust to it as well. The first 10 games of the season showed this as the side tried to adjust from a wide crossing philosophy to a central possession one. Several formations were used until we finally settled on the current 433 and the team started to see consistent results. Dropping the likes of ADM, Falcao and RVP were critical because they lost possession all too often. I highly suspect ADM will leave United but may get one last chance to prove himself. At the moment however I'd still prefer to see Young start ahead of him, he has had a renaissance this season and is back to his best.

Strengths - DDG has had an outstanding season but he will be sold in the summer, this could become our weakness next season, he was crucial for us.

Weaknesses - Up front we need a striker capable of 20+ goals, I don't have as much faith in Rooney as others on here. Its been a long time since he was capable of such a goal haul, I highly doubt he will be our main striker next season so United will likely bring someone in. Whether they are capable is yet to be seen.

Trends - The 433 will become our main formation, unfortunately its still likely Rooney will get game time in CM as we will have a new striker up front, if however the new signing is a flop Rooney will get time up there but I don't think he'll be particularly successful.

      2. Smalling seems to have become a strong CB that can be relied upon. The rest of the defence isn't particularly nailed on. United will likely buy a new RB, GKer and CB. This uncertainty doesn't bode well for early clean sheets next season as a new look defence will take time to gel.

      3. Herrera and Mata have done really well in the 433 formation. I'd expect them to kick on in the next season and chip in with more assists assuming United bring in a capable striker. I'm still unconvinced that either will be solid FPL options however because there is a risk they may become somewhat pedestrian, lacking the penetration to break down organised defences like we saw this season. Depay will provide competition for Young so despite having a strong season Young has another fight on his hands. Ultimately I'm still not convinced anyone is 100% nailed on outside of Carrick so I'd expect the same old United midfield issues next season unless someone like Depay hits the ground running and becomes undroppable.

      4. A new signing is needed. A 433 requires just 1 striker and that striker will need to be someone very special, a striker capable of 20+ goals. United don't have such a striker and this is a major weakness. Its time United move on from Rooney, he isn't that type of player anymore and if I was LVG I wouldn't trust him to become that player for us.

      5. New signings are necessary for United in order to compete next season. A new striker is critical because we looked extremely pedestrian at times in the second half of the season. Next year teams will know how to combat the filoshofee and its very easy to nullify if you are prepared to defend. We won't get away with this style next season without some necessary tweaks and a real goal getter up front.

I've seen it from enough different sources that even if it isn't 100% true I'd be surprised if it were 100% false.

I'd be surprised if he did without players going:

      LB: Gibbs, Monreal
CB: Koscielny, Gabriel, Mertesacker, Chambers, Youngster
      RB: Debuchy, Bellerin.

      Pretty much covered.

Yeah....but Gibbs is injured all the time, Monreal is mediocre, Mertesacker is one of the most embarrassing CB in the PL, Gabriel is pretty much a nobody. Debuchy is overrated too...i mean, he should change the entire defense or he's never going to win anything ever again.

I think Monreal is fine if you can keep Gibbs fit. Debuchy is fine, he was never this injured at Newcastle, another example of Arsenal players picking up way more injuries there than at the other clubs they have played for.

Totally agree on Mertesacker though, games pass him by, try and ship him to seria A, mor tactical game, could try and do it as a deal to get the youngster Juan Jesus in.

Actually read it all for the laughs. Not sure if trolling or serious but will go with the latter.

Mertesacker embarassing? Kos-mert partnership is one of the most effective in the league. look at the stats when the two have played together. Gabriel a nobody for those who only watch epl. One of the highest rated defenders in spain before his arrival. Debuchy is okay and bellerini looks like a decent prospect

          I'm 50/50 on whether you're being serious.

A defence shouldn't generally be viewed as individuals, it should be viewed as a unit. Koscielny and Mertesacker are a very good partnership, and Gabriel has looked good from what I've seen (what him being a "nobody" has to do with it I don't know). Chambers is still a work in progress.

Monreal has been very good this season, Bellerin has been fantastic, and Debuchy and Gibbs are very competent full backs.

Arsenal need a new keeper, and another centre back (Mertesacker is getting on), but to write off their whole defence is laughable.
