The Community Round Up

Season planning began in earnest this week after the 2015/16 fixture list was released on Wednesday. The search for teams with the best opening fixtures and potential rotation pairings was understandably the main attraction for Fantasy managers. The UEFA U21 Fantasy game was another key theme of the week, with our community writers and posters on hand to offer advice on the best transfers to make as the tournament progresses. Elsewhere, the community focuses on some of the new faces coming into the Premier League next season, while our Members stats section takes in some of last season’s top performers.

The Community Articles

We know the fixtures now, all we need are the prices to put the finishing touches to our team planning for next season. Dat Guy’s summer price prediction challenge, in which the community attempts to second guess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price setters, has already generated some interesting figures. Earlier in the week he collated the guesses so far and rolled out an average community predicted price for each of the 50 players in his list.

For those anticipating some budget-friendly prices, The Sarjeant has drafted this handy guide to Members on getting the most out of the season ticker to find the perfect cheap rotation pairs.

Elsewhere, RuthNZ’s summer long Premier League team review series continued this week with Everton and West Ham coming under his microscope.

For those playing the UEFA U21 Fantasy game, Saniul has created these pair of guides looking at the key players to consider drafting in from Group A and Group B.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The release of the 2015/16 Premier League fixture list dominated discussion in the community this week, as tickers were hastily constructed and transfer plans were put in place. The first amongst the community to get a working season ticker up and running was The Blue of Leicester.

For those looking to see how the Premier League fixtures dovetail with FA Cup and European competition commitments, Couti and the Below5th was another quick off the mark to make this fully comprehensive fixture calendar. Pasqualinho’s eagle eyes spotted a key part of the calendar for Fantasy managers, when, on the weekend of March 12, the FA Cup quarter finals take place at the same time as Premier League fixtures. This has the potential to create a bumper set of double Gameweeks, he noted.

No release of the fixture list would be complete without discussion around rotation, particularly in defence. Ruth NZ has helped out with his look at the key home and away rotation pairs for the season. Giggs Boson has also been looking at home and away options, to see if teams really do perform better on familiar soil, while blocks of home fixtures were the focus of Portsmouth Bubblejet‘s research.

Jaffalicious, meanwhile, has taken an even more detailed look at rotation options focusing on fixture difficulty to unearth some perfect pairs.

Saniul was among those to point out that Arsenal have a good opening set of fixtures in our discussion on last year’s top Premier League sides start to the season. Meanwhile, Nomar likes the look of Norwich’s defence in our assessment of the promoted sides opening fixtures.

The UEFA Euro U21 Championship game launched this week. For those looking to make changes and prepare for the final stages Roscola was on hand with some advice about budget and mid-price midfielders. There was further discussion courtesy of Saniul regarding the Germany U21 squad here. We also compiled this handy list of Group A’s set piece takers and those on free kicks and corners in Group B during the first set of matches.

One of our busiest discussions was around improvements to Fantasy Football next season. For CPTCrunch11 it was better points for defensive midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while for Jafalad the removal of the second wildcard in FPL is an essential change. Jafalad was back later in the week to start an intriguing discussion on the typical profile needed to win FPL, with issues like facial hair, marital status and age amongst key factors listed.

Newcastle are a team in dire need of improvement after a disappointing 2014/15 campaign saw them narrowly avoid relegation. With Steve McClaren at the helm, many are hoping their players can deliver, particularly as they are set to gain kind price tags in 2015/16. In our discussion on the Magpies’ prospects Innsie hopes that QPR’s Charlie Austin joins up at St James’ Park to give Fantasy managers another good striker option. Meanwhile, Pompeyfan will be keeping an eye on Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat during pre-season, as well as their price tags.

Austin is one of a number of transfer targets to be included in Herzd’s price prediction hot topic looking at how much players would be worth if they move teams before the FPL prices are released.

Among those already on the move is Joselu, who completed his move from Hannover to Stoke this week. Our resident Bundesliga expert Portsmouth Bubblejet was on hand to enlighten us into how the striker will adapt to life with the Potters. If his recent history in Germany is anything to go by he is unlikely to make Doolittle‘s list of the best Premier League goals.

The Members Tables

For those looking to get an attacking defender in next season Bowstring has constructed this table looking at the most threatening backline stars of 2014/15.

Meanwhile Latchmere Wave Machine has been looking at the most successful selfish players, who score the highest number of solo goals.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

City's need for homegrown players seems to leave them with a very small pool of players to puck from and having to pay over the odds! They essentially need two from sterling, Wilshire, Delph, berahino and schneiderlin(eligible?)

Any other obvious options for them?

Disaster losing him! I think United made a similar mistake a few years ago letting john o Shea go. It means they have to buy two to 3 players to cover his usefulness!

Need 8 homegrown players in 25 man squad. Have to have played for 3 years before there 21st birthday I think to count!

If you take it that the top managers only want a 21 man squad then really you only need 3 home grown players and a few youth guys no? If you have your sub gk as home grown as well then you are down to 2 players out of 20. They can even be in the 9 that are nit really first team regulars.

Scneiderlin is home grown under current rules but if the rule change goes ahead then he will no longer be home grown

      Barkley is home grown too.

if that new rule comes into play a few teams will be in serious trouble.

Yeah It's going to further inflate English players prices and lead to a lot of lost development for young talent!

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

surely it will increase development for younger players as clubs will be forced to bring them into the squads so therefore will want better talent coming up. the issue at the moment is clubs can just buy as they please, without having to worry about bringing youth up etc....it is just English players that can be home grown either.

the idea of the rule is to stop teams like City buying a squad

Can't see it developing talent. The top clubs will just bring in English talent and leave them in squad no's 22-26 (that's 5 of the 8) and if the can get one or two for the first team or first team squad then that will fill things out.

It will mean all the best young English players getting bought from clubs where they would have played and improved getting bought up and benched az they are not good enough for the top teams yet and will never get enough game time to improve to that level imo

I see the way you think it will work but they had rules like that in Scotland and it led to a real waste of talent as the likes of Celtic and rangers used to get all the top youngsters and would not be able to let them even go out on loan as they needed a certain quota for their match day squads. It led to players with real talent but not good enough for the first team being held on to until they were in their 20's before they were replaced with the next young player on the bench. A lot of these players would have had real potential but it never git fulfilled as they didn't play enough football.

The intention is good but it has been proven not to work.

The other side of the coin is if you weaken the epl teams then they won't be as a tractive a tv proposition leaving them to lose revenue and be unable to compete for the best players in the world leading to an even more unattractive tv proposition. It could actually kill the epl.

If you want young players to come through then get them coached by uefa pro license coaches and let them move abroad for top class first team football like so many other top players do.

          - Players, irrespective of nationality, will have to be with his club from age 15 to qualify as home-grown

          - The number of non-home grown players in each 25-man squad is to be reduced from 17 to 13

          - At least two home-grown players must be club trained

Must be with his club since age 15 or with an English league club? I.e. can city buy a player who has been with another club since the age 15?

city can buy players from other clubs. Fabregas counts for chelsea and welbeck for arsenal. it will just lead to the whole england squad being top 4/6 and half not even playing. I think england will be the most negatively effected by it!

Arsenal currently have 14 players in their squad classed as non-home grown:

Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Mathieu Debuchy, Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, Gabriel, Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Nacho Monreal, David Ospina, Mesut Ozil, Tomas Rosicky and Alexis Sanchez.

Furthermore, Wojciech Szczęsny, Francis Coquelin and Damian Martinez would no longer be classed as home grown under the new rules.

That means Arsene Wenger would need to chop four players from that list to meet the limit of 13 non-home grown players.

Easy-peesy. Sell Flamini, Szczesny and Martinez. Diaby is out already.

Doesn't sound like those rules will be agreed to by epl. It would be the death nell for it as they would no longer be even close to competitive in Europe and if they can't attract the top players then the tv money will stop rolling in.

Yes, would make the league very interesting if it happens. And City surely fear it, they're bidding exorbitant prices for players like Sterling and potentially, Wilshere.

It would not interesting until the next tv deal is negotiated. Then when that gets cut in half and arsenal and the other top teams have to sell their world class players as they can't afford the wages it would make the league extremely boring.

"Heading in to the cup final, there was plenty of debate about who out of Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina should start the game. That in itself is symptomatic of the problem: There is no clear candidate for the No. 1 shirt."- Simply not true. There was debate as to whether we should play our first choice GK, or our second choice cup GK.

"However, the final decision on his future will not be his. The smoking incident in January may have rendered him irredeemable in Wenger's eyes."- Obviously not, because he played him in the FA cup. Wenger used to smoke in the dugout managing Monaco, I imagine he would be more forgiving than other managers.

"He is under 6'0" and these days, with the way the ball moves and the size of players, a goalkeeper needs to really be 6'3" at least."- Navas is the same size and was the best GK in La Liga in 13/14. Ospina also has the highest save percentage of any keeper in the PL who has played 10+ games. Simply not true that you have to be a giant to be a good goalkeeper.

I don't think we do. Ospina is a very good goalkeeper, and Wojjy has the potential to be a very good goalkeeper as well. If he can cut out mistakes he'd be one of the best. Games like West Ham away and Villa in the FA cup final show how he can dominate a box.

Ospina has the misfortune of not being very flashy. He reads the flight of the ball really well, and reads shots early. He makes a big contribution, but makes it look easy.

Wojjy? He gives me heart attacks when he is playing. Yes, good attitude but that's not all you need.

In the cup final itself, he randomly got out of his position for balls he could not even touch... thankfully Villa were totally out of sorts on the day.

Which could have been a goal, and that's all matters. Good goalkeepers don't play a game of chances. They'd have a 100% success rate of getting the balls they attack.

Manchester City have the current maximum of 17 non home-grown players. Those are:

Sergio Aguero, Wilfried Bony, Willy Caballero, Martin Demichelis, Edin Dzeko, Fernando, Fernandinho, Stevan Jovetic, Aleksandar Kolarov, Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala, Samir Nasri, Jesus Navas, Bacary Sagna, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta.

In addition Gael Clichy and Dedryck Boyata would no longer be classed as a home-grown players under the new rules because they did not play for English clubs for three years before their 18th birthdays.

If the rules were introduced today, City would need to offload six of the players listed above.

    * Boyata, one of Jovetic/Dzeko, one of Kolarov/Clichy, one of Nasri/Navas...and? Will be very difficult for them.

Agreed. Some of those players are coming towards the end of their contracts and the over 30's are unlikely to be re-signed.

What you're forgetting is that the squad depth must remain same which means they have to sign home-grown players of similar quality from clubs who would now be more intent on keeping them. I can't see how it is THAT easy.

Also in a window where they would have wanted to buy Pogba and de Bruyne, and will now want Sterling and Wilshere... that's some gulf in quality.

Yes, over the course of the season but would not be my GW1 pick.
Dier is essentially a CB, Yedlin might be loaned out, so that's between Trippier and Walker, who has not done well since his injury return.

Premier League leaders Chelsea have 15 players in their current squad classed as non-home grown:

Cesar Azpilicueta, Petr Cech, Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois, Juan Cuadrado, Didier Drogba, Eden Hazard, Branislav Ivanovic, Filipe Luis, Nemanja Matic, John Obi Mikel, Oscar, Ramires, Loic Remy and Willian.

Furthermore Cesc Fabregas would no longer be classed as a home-grown player under the new rules.

That means Jose Mourinho would need to axe three of the overseas stars listed above if the rules were in place today.

Mikel on the way out, Drogba already left... they could just get one of their countless decent players on loan on cover who have been with Chelsea since they were kids.

Remy, Filipe Luis and one of Willian/Cuadrado could be replaces by players like Solanke, Ake and Christensen, and Loftus-Cheek. Wouldn't be absolutely a terrible situation for them.

Hoffman, then Belotti for me last time.

Have bought in Kadlec and Volland under WC, and have the choice of either Italian as third forward (can't afford Kane, without making changes elsewhere)

city need to axe the likes of sagna, jovetic, one of fernando/fernandinho, and maybe ditch caballero.

Caballero good keeper such as green or ruddy
    Demichelis - Stones
    Fernandos - wilshere
    Jovetic - berahinho/kane
    Sagna - coleman??
    Kolarov/Clichy?? - Cresswell
    Barkley??

Serious money to be spent and a lot of young talent possibly wasted.

We will not sell Wilshere to any club whatsoever, we need the home-grown players too and he is too loyal to the club.

Bertrand could go to City IMO.

yeah that's the thing. Its not impossible to see city bidding 40-50 mill for him which is crazy. Premier league will lose out. Could get vidal and schneiderlin for that price. Would you take that deal if the new rules dont come in?

But I think we have to be wary of the new rules as well, not exactly on the same side. Wilshere is an invaluable member of the squad, more so if the rules come in. Can't see us selling him at any price IMO.

As for the players you suggested, Schneiderlin would be a different kind of addition, one that Flamini/Arteta will make place for, and we certainly have 25 million - Vidal is a mess.
