Earlier this week, Southampton announced the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on a season-long loan deal from Fulham.

Having managed just one appearance during a temporary stint at Monaco last term, the 32-year-old shot-stopper is looking to muscle his way into the Saints’ starting lineup, in light of last season’s injury to first choice keeper, Frazer Forster:

“I’m very pleased that I’ve joined. It’s a big, nice club that will play European football – and I can play. Last year I didn’t play a lot, so it’s an opportunity for me. I’m grateful. The last two years weren’t the best of my career. As they say in England: the best is yet to come.”

The History

Stekelenburg trained at the youth academies of Zandvoort ’75 and VV Schoten, before teaming up with Ajax at the age of 15. He eventually broke into the first team in February 2002 and went on to record eight further Eredivisie appearances that season. Stekelenburg assumed the role of back-up for the next two campaigns, being handed 22 league outings.

In his first two terms as Ajax’s number one shot-stopper, the club secured back-to-back KNVB Cup trophies, while the 2007/08 season saw Stekelenburg named as Ajax’s Player of the Year. The Haarlem-born keeper played a bit-part role in 2008/09 due to injury but swiftly reclaimed his starting berth after rehabilitation. Stekelenburg scooped Ajax’s Player of the Year for a second time in the wake of the Dutch giants’ title-winning 2010/11 campaign.

Roma then came calling in the summer of 2011, snapping up the stopper in a €6 million deal. The first Dutch player to sign for the Serie A stalwarts, Stekelenburg managed 29 league appearances in his debut season but tallied just 19 starts in the 2012/13 campaign, prompting a switch to Fulham in June 2013.

Stekelenburg played under Rene Meulensteen but was cast into the shadows following the appointment of Felix Magath, with the German boss preferring David Stockdale between the sticks. As a result, the 6ft 6in keeper moved on loan to Monaco for the 2014/15 season, where he played second fiddle to their incumbent number one, Danijel Subašić, chalking up just eight appearances that included just a single Ligue 1 outing.

In the wake of Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, Stekelenburg established himself as the first-choice Netherlands keeper, notching 54 appearances between 2004 and 2012. He’s since fallen out of favour on the international scene, with a lack of playing time precluding a return to Oranje.

The Prospects

With three Southampton defenders (Nathaniel Clyne, Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte) among the top-six scoring defenders after the club racked up 15 clean sheets last term, it’s safe to assume that the Saints’ rearguard starters are due a price hike. As such, the keeper situation could present the most valuable route into their backline.

With some reports suggesting Fraser Forster could be sidelined for the majority of the upcoming season, Kelvin Davis, Paulo Gazzaniga and Stekelenburg will be tussling for that number one berth. Certainly, the latter’s recruitment would suggest that Ronald Koeman wasn’t satisfied with his options in the squad – a notion reinforced by the fact that Southampton recorded just one clean sheet in eight fixtures following Forster’s injury.

Perhaps crucially, it’s worth noting that Koeman shares history with Stekelenburg – having handed the keeper his debut at Ajax – so it’s unlikely the Fulham man would have made the switch without assurances of pitch time. Southampton’s pre-season campaign – which kicks off on July 8 and includes a couple of Europa League qualifying fixtures – will hopefully give a clear indication as to who he favours in Forster’s absence.

With Portuguese right-back Cedric Soares already on the books, and Clyne imminently set to join former loanee Toby Alderweireld through the exit door, Southampton’s defence could be set for major restructuring for the second successive season. However, the Saints coped admirably with the loss of Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren last summer, so there’s every chance they could retain their defensive diligence under Koeman’s considered approach.

Given their favourable opening quintet of fixtures (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba), Southampton defensive coverage looks like a good bet in the early stages. Aside from the two match-ups against newly promoted outfits, the Saints face off against three sides that they shut out at least once in the previous campaign, heightening their defensive points potential from the offset.

I concur. If you have 2 average keepers already plus one who is injured you would only sign another if he was going to play until Forster came back.

Sylvain Distin’s move to Bournemouth has been delayed as he has to wait for his Everton contract to expire, reports the Bournemouth Echo.

The defender has been released by the Toffees and the paper claims he was due to undergo a medical today before penning a one-year deal with the Premier League new boys.

But they report that Everton officials were not keen to let him train with Eddie Howe’s men until after June 30, when his contract officially expires.

Forster, Clyne, and Morgan. Could be a fair amount of upheaval to settle down from. Would almost prefer a tough run early on, so they could build the relationships in time for an easier run later.

I can't remember, but this is three different positions affected this time. That's got to be a bit hard to co-ordinate. Was it just Shaw and Lovren from the defence last year?

RB - Chambers had played most of the second half of the previous season at RB, sold to Arsenal.
GK - Forster was new for the 2014/15 season, having moved from Celtic, replacing Boruc.
CB - We lost Lovren, replaced with Alderweireld.
LB - Lost Shaw, replaced with Bertrand.

The backline, even if we can't buy Alderweireld, will be MORE intact. 😛

We couldn't do it the first time apparently. It was an exodus. We were doomed. Apparently the fact we did it once, seems to make it MORE unlikely with some people (because it was lucky? because all good things come to an end? because other teams don't do the same?), despite the fact we've now proven that we can.

I'm concerned about that CB spot. If we get that sorted with someone of quality (not dreaded Vlaar), and an appropriate replacement for Schneiderlin, I think we'll be ok. Maybe not as many CS as last season though.

It's a strong spine to replace, with limited options available with PL experience. Maybe Blind could be part of the deal?

Haha he'd never come to us.

I don't think we'll get someone else from the PL. Prices are high and, outside the top 4, generally the quality isn't great. Anyone with any quality gets snapped up by the big boys.

I guess LB is a possibility but then if Shaw gets a decent stretch of fitness, you'd expect LVG to put his efforts to developing Shaw, not Blind, at LB.

If Arsenal have simply been beaten to Scheiderlin, then fair enough, but if Wenger has decided that he doesn't need him because he has Coquelin, then he has reach "peak Wenger". With Kondogbia out of the equation, this could be a huge, huge signing.

Ha yeah, put all his faith in a guy that 12 months ago he was loaning to Charlton. He did great when he came back, but he can't possibly think it's not worth a bit of investment.

Why does he insist that ONE player in certain positions is enough? Flamini is completely shot, an injury to Coquelin and Arsenal's challenge is over for another year. If he has something up his sleeve then fair enough, but he should have done absolute everything possible to get Schneiderlin.

Not to mention that one of their main rivals will now be much, much stronger.

I'm not an Arsenal fan but they frustrate me sometimes, they were always my 2nd favourite team growing up and I'd love them to get back to the top.

If we sign a striker though, we'll lose Theo.

I'm hoping Walcott can earn a spot as out striker. I reckon he can easily scored 20+ goals as a first choice striker.

Winger should try and get Higuain even if he has to pay 40-45 mil

I'm not a fan of Higuain anyway. I don't think we NEED to sign a striker personally. Walcott can step up, Giroud is always good for 20 goals, + Sanchez, Ramsey, we have plenty of goals in us.

I think we just need a DM good on the ball, and keep our best players fit.

Wally isn't good enough IMO to be the front man, Giroud shows glimpses then reverts to type (donkey) too often... Personally I don't buy this BS that because he holds the ball up well occasionally he is good enough to lead your attack..

Can't really say he isn't good enough, when he hasn't had much chance. He's started 2 games up front this season, and scored 4 goals!

He a great finisher, great pace obviously, and makes brilliant runs. His link up play can't be much worse than Costa's either.

                        have to say I agree

Wally is a great back up striker but to win the league you need a proven goalscorer, not a winger who fancies his chances up front. Maybe if he had a season or two playing up front then yes, also he can't seem to stay fit

Giroud is good for 20 goals but if he gets injured...Wenger just won't spend big and therefore you will always just fall short.

He's not as good as a proper specialised DM though, and what a waste of a brilliant b2b midfielder. Imagine if we used the Ramsey of 13/14 as a holding midfielder.

Yup. I think he'll shine. This one hurts the most because we've taken him from League One to the Premier League, we've watched him grow and we did everything we could to cling on. He repaid us with almost flawless service - a spat last summer, but mostly an excellent attitude and commitment to the team. Before last summer's events, he was quite easily my favourite player.

Well, either Wenger didn't want him, we weren't willing to pay the transfer fee, Man U offered more money, or maybe he thought he has more chance of trophies at Man U.

I'm hoping it's not true, but if it were true, I imagine the transfer fee is the most likely reason.

Well I think the areas we could strengthen would be centre back, defensive midfield, and a striker.

I don't think we'll sign a centre back or a striker, so that just leaves DM. If Morgan goes, I'm not sure who we would go for. I wouldn't be shocked if we didn't get anyone else.

I don't see how, without huge investment, we, or similar teams, can ever break back into the top 4. We could maybe do it once as a bit of a fluke, but then our squad wouldn't cope with European football, and all of our players would be poached by richer clubs. Spurs are maybe the only club that could do it (London based, big stadium, big money), but for Everton, Southampton, Swansea etc, there is no chance.

Yeah, and then Barcelona and Real Madrid went and spent a bucketload of money. Even now, players like Turan, Koke and Griezemann could be on the way out. Atletico Madrid have done insanely well, but can you really see them becoming top dogs in Spain in the long-term?

All our target can be is to be the best of the rest - 7th, maybe 5th or 6th if we have a great season - and possibly a cup.

Then be in the Europa League and finish in the bottom half.

No, I agree, and it's not fair at the moment. But I'm just saying it is possible. For a smaller team like Everton or Saints to compete, they would have to go through a 20 year process of growth, and BvB and Atletico may not always compete at the top, but they have become 'top teams'.

Yeh, 7th, 3 points off 5th. It was an awful season for them, but that doesn't mean they're no longer a top team.

Chelsea finished 6th a few years ago lest we forget, Man U finished 7th not long ago.

Yeh, he takes great management, great owners, and levels of consistency, but it is possible, over a long period of time. You need to grow commercially, and grow as a club. It's a long and hard process, but it can be done.

Dortmund nearly got relegated last year! And Atletico and Dortmund have been able to build with 2 wonderful managers. Klopp has now gone, Atletico are lucky that Simeone is loyal and trying to really build something.

You have to deal with both players and the manager being poached, as we found out with Moyes. Even after one good year people were talking about Martinez being taken by one of the big boys!

I agree it's very difficult, I'm just saying it's not impossible. You guys could maintain position in 5th-6th, and make progress in the Europa league, you could then even get into the CL. There are ways to progress beyond massive investment from rich owners.

Europa League kills teams, not helps them. There's a reason why people speculated that Spurs were trying to actively avoid the competition.

I don't believe there is. Who has broken the top 4 stronghold in 20 years? Blackburn did for one season, with huge investment. Chelsea did it, with a billionaire. City did it, with a billionaire. You cannot do it, consistently, in this country without insane investment.

Spurs have had big investment, they've made £85m from one player, they have a massive stadium, they've had a year of Champions League football, and that's left them...not even realistically in contention for the top 4 this year.

Spurs are the only ones with a realistic hope of competing, but even that's a very slim chance. Even Liverpool are struggling!

I know it's not easy, but I'm just saying it's not impossible. The target should be progression year on year. Everton can feasibly cement themselves as a Europa league heavyweight like Sevilla, and from there you can continue to make progression.

But the big clubs get bigger too. The gap doesn't close, the top haven't reached a ceiling.

But progression is like a bell curve. It's easier for Everton to get twice as good, as it is for Arsenal to get twice as good, for example. The gap isn't closing in England because clubs haven't yet found a way to balance Europe, or even make progression in Europe. You wouldn't expect Spurs for example to close the gap on Englands best when they are still failing against their European counterparts.

Van de Saar : Beast at Ajax --> Fail in Italy --> Good at Fulham --> Legend of Man United
Stekelenburg : Beast at Ajax --> Fail in Italy --> Fulham got relegated --> Bench warmer for Monaco

    .
Stekelenburg showed so much promise at Ajax, he was superb. But Forster is no doubt better than him now, nothing more than a back up when Forster returns. Such a shame.

But Koeman was the man that ignited him at Ajax, perhaps he can do the same again. He could yet do a VDS and put the Southampton defence back in our thoughts, despite Schneiderlin's inevitable departure to Old Trafford.

My point is that it is incredible the success that Southampton continue to have when there best players get bought every summer.

There is not a better club around for developing talent and with football clubs run as businesses these days, Southampton have to be amongst the best in making a profit each season.

Saints are a 'feeder' club, even Arsenal are still considered a 'feeder' club by some. It's the anything aspect of football when teams that are not the power clubs get a good player it's impossible to hold onto them.

Saints managed to find some bargains last season so the hope is they can do it again. I don't they have a choice in letting those players go but it certainly worked last season in getting rid of Lovren and Lambert and Shaw!

I once sat next to Matt Le Tissier in the departure lounge of Atlanta airport, I was only 12 at the time though, didn't know who he has, my Dad got his autograph, and I honestly thought he was Phil Tufnell.

Anyone considering an Aston Villa defender for the beginning of the season? Ticker seems to indicate they have a good shot at clean sheets. It'll be only my second season playing FPL, and my first as a member of FFS. Can't wait, I'm addicted!

OK so does that suggest the ticker isn't to be trusted then? I am just curious how people make their decisions at the outset like this, since last year I went into it pretty blind and picked a very poor team.

The ticker is based on the difficulty of playing the opposition, not receptive to the weaknesses of the defending team. Do you see? 🙂 You need to factor in the quality of the defending team yourself. I wouldn't touch Villa with a barge pole but that's up to your judgement. 🙂

Ok, even when you select to filter for clean sheets?

For now I am considering Koscielny, maybe Bertrand, PvA and then someone from Leicester - a remaining one to be decided based on rotations.

                Anyway, thanks!

We, Southampton, have Europa League and will have defensive upheaval - Clyne, Toby, Schneiderlin. We were good at keeping clean sheets last season so the prices of our defenders will be quite high. It may not be worth the gamble.

OK, good point ... I had forgotten about the Europa League!

Like a lot of people seem to be, I am thinking of skipping out on the Chelsea defense for now having Koscielny as my one "elite" guy.

Agree with Lucy, I wouldn't touch a Sherwood defence.

Welcome to the site anyway, the membership is fantastic - I recommend the ticker (of course), RMT and, my personal favourite, the comparison tool. Once the season starts, the comparison tool is extremely helpful.

Also, I recommend you get a grav:

People on here are much more receptive when you have one, and you'll become a more easily recognisable part of the community!

Suggesting Madrid will sign Otamendi for Ramos when Real can't sign anymore non-EU players anyway.

They have 4 already (Danilo, James, Casemiro, Lucas Silva)
