Leicester made their third foray into the summer transfer market last Friday by acquiring Mainz striker Shinji Okazaki on a four-year deal, believed to be in the region of £7m.

The Japan international follows Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth to the King Power Stadium and, as assistant manager Steve Walsh revealed, the striker has been a long-term target for the Foxes:

“We have been watching him for the best part of two years and we tried to get him to sign last summer and again in January, but now we have been successful we are really pleased to get him. He is a real talent and the fans will take to him. Not only is he good with the ball but also out of possession he is exactly what we need. He is a high energy player. He is very opportunistic and any mistakes that are made by defenders he will capitalise on that and stick the ball in the net. That is the main asset. Out of possession he knows how to play, he knows positional sense and how to close players down. His work rate is phenomenal.”

Speaking on the move, Okazaki praised the Foxes for their late-season revival while insisting he’s prepared to face the unique challenges of England’s top flight:

“I will do my best to show how I can play and try to make a lot of goals for the supporter. I watched every match [last season] in the Premier League; not all of them are easy. There were hard games. In the last few games the crowd were great and the players responded. It was an amazing result at the end of the season. It’s a huge challenge to come here to the Premier League but I hope I can show everyone what I can do.”

The History

Okazaki started his club career at J-League outfit Shimizu S-Pulse, where he signed a professional contract in 2005. The frontman went on to tally 121 league appearances for the first division side, with his final two campaigns harvesting 27 goals and eight assists.

In response to Okazaki’s impressive scoring rate, Stuttgart snapped him up in January 2011. In his first full season with Die Roten (The Reds), Okazaki established himself as a regular starter and notched seven goals in 27 league outings. The next term, however, saw him limited to a bit-part role, as Okazaki produced a solitary goal and zero assists across 25 outings, clocking just 1,013 minutes in the process.

Despite this poor form, Mainz sealed Okazaki’s signature in the summer of 2013. His debut season was a resounding success under the stewardship of Thomas Tuchel, serving up 15 goals and one assist in 33 league appearances. His second campaign was similarly productive, with 12 goals and six assists in 32 appearances, making Okazaki the highest-scoring Japanese player to ever grace the league.

On the international front, Okazaki earned his first senior cap for Japan in October 2008, having competed for the under-23 team during the Beijing Olympics. More recently, he netted for Samurai Blue during the group stages of the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 Asian Cup. With 43 goals to his name in 93 appearances, Okazaki is Japan’s third-top scorer and their sixth-most capped player of all time.

The Prospects

It’s fair to say that Tuesday’s surprise dismissal of Nigel Pearson leaves plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Foxes right now. Leicester’s late surge to safety was based on a successful 3-4-1-2 formation, with Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy supported by Riyad Mahrez; yet with wing-back systems somewhat of a rarity in England’s top-flight, a change of tactics may well be on the cards once a new boss is appointed.

Given that the likes of David Nugent and Andrej Kramaric are also vying with Ulloa and Vardy for the striker positions, Okazaki’s versatility could boost his prospects of pitch time.

The striker is adaptable enough to also play on the flank and in a central support berth, though his record in Germany indicates he’s best utilised through the middle. In all but three of his 65 appearances at Mainz, Okazaki was fielded as a centre-forward (usually in a 4-3-2-1 set-up), which paid dividends with regards to his attacking returns (27 goals, seven assists) over the past two Bundesliga seasons. Tasked with a variety of roles (support striker, left and right winger) in his final term at Stuttgart – and only afforded four starts as their frontman – Okazaki served up a single goal.

Certainly, standing five foot eight inches tall, the Japan international is no like-for-like replacement for Ulloa, who contested more aerial duels than any other forward in the Premier League last term and may well remain the Foxes’ main target man.

In terms of how he stacks up against Leicester’s current forward contingent, Okazaki’s average of 48 minutes per shot last season is near-identical to Vardy (49.1) and ahead of Ulloa’s 51.1, whilst his shot conversion rate of 20.3%, whilst just behind Ulloa (22.4%), was far superior to the likes of Nugent (12.2%), Vardy (10.4%) and Kramaric (8.7%). Such statistics suggest that he’ll be lined up for a central berth, then, as the Foxes look to improve upon last term’s 46-goal haul.

By virtue of Leicester’s excellent start to the new campaign (SUN, why, TOT, bou, AVL, sto), Okazaki – if priced at 6.0 or below – could emerge as a profitable third striker should he be afforded a run of starts from the outset.

Given the wealth of competition for places in Leicester’s forward line, though, it remains to be seen whether he’ll emerge as a viable option for Fantasy managers or, like Kramaric, struggle to adapt to his new surrounds and rely on minutes off the bench.

Pre-season should hopefully shed more light on his prospects for the campaign ahead as the Foxes look to regroup in light of Pearson’s dramatic departure.

Jose should give Everton a discount on Lukaku and loan us Bamford for the year. It looks ominous we lose McCarthy and Coleman so they need to beef up before it gets even worse at Everton.

Is it not time the FPL assess properly who is a forward and who is a mid? I know some players are versatile but when the likes of Wally and Sanchez play so far up the field and an argument can be made for Hazard as well they should be reassessed. Silva is a genuine Mid IMO and was the mos effective Mid in the FPL last year. Or is it you must be and out and out striker to be evaluated? If someone plays wing or no 10 then their price should drop but put in the right category.

But hazard plays mainly on the wing.

From a pure fpl pov..some players are put as mid/striker so as to open up more options. Only 3 striker spots..if sanchez giroud wally are all strikers it will kill at least 1 as an option.

I follow your thinking but don't you think halfway through the season it gets too easy to pick the forwards?

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 5 months ago

Abit easy as there are limites choices..and especially more last year since utd pool chelsea soton new swans(gomis might be) and so on not providing decent striker options since jan. Does not help tt kane austin aguero is always performing when fit

This might mean a 352 could be better right now..until more teams can provide good striker options.

Have you wondered about the affect Hazard and Sanchez 9 and Wally 7.5 forwards would have. More thought required on forwards and 3 5 2 would probably evaporate.

      • 11 Years

I agree, Sanchez should be down as a forward - his points tally was skewed because of this. Walcott too and a I would argue Hazard also. Too many good mids and too few good forwards. Given the budget constraints, I think many Ffers will start the season with a 3:5:2 or 4:4:2 formation. The latter is appealing given the good fixtures of the likes of Sun and Lei.

I would hate this.. Would make the game more boring for me not being to have all these midfielders in my team. And they are more midfielders for me than strikers, they're always going to be at a scoring disadvantage to the likes of Aguero if reclassified.

From an FPL perspective, as we only have 3 spaces for forwards on our teams some of the strikers who are often played OOP have to be classed as midfielders. I would argue that Welbeck is more a midfielder than a striker (from FPL perspective) as he is more often played out on the wing, and Wallcott is more often played up front. I would be interested to know how they sort these out.

Imo its form of players/teams that determine formations. Regardless its a 352 or 343. Every year is different. Its just the availability of options

I sometimes think this but then I think its more of a heart over head thing. I want players names that sounds good rather than a crap forward. But this game is about points and not the best looking team.

Last year 2 forwards were nailed provided fitness was there. Kun and Kane. With Kane at a low price it made it easier to beef up the mids. I hate rotating but I could afford it. When there are realistically 2 decisions to make (a forward and a mid) the game did get a little boring. It was easier when the money was around to play 3 5 2. Captains picks made a massive difference.

      1. money face bandwagon

Yeah i end up rotating too since the likes of kane and austin are too cheap and good...thus alot of cash left.

As mentioned by holmes above i might start with 352 too since there seems to have better options in the midfield.

Yep. last year early on the mids were going bonkers and people moved over to 3 5 2 early on. once Kane and Austin established themselves as cheap options the methods changed also.

I think a big consideration for the first half of the season is price rises and falls. Its hard to get a balance but I would always favor transfer movement if my watchlist was a toss of a coin who comes in and out.

i am not saying it worked but in mini league terms I had 108 mil towards the end and had better choices than my opposition. I went fro 1 000 000 to 15 000 in half a season.

Last season was a bit of an anomaly though, Sturridge injured all season, Costa in n out cause of fitness, Lukaku, Pelle and Benteke were all nailed but just not scoring. Rooney was constantly being moved from pillar to post. If Sturridge, Rooney, Kun and Costa all stay fit this season there will be competition for top priced strikers. Arsenal is the great unknown, but I suspect if Walcott stay fit n firing Giroud will become a late sub striker.

Not a bad idea. Some people (foolishly) give more weight to people with higher rankings in their history. This would be a simple, effective way of showing it.

You cousins start one listing the top 10 transfers in and categorise which people would consider then pure gambles, educated risks, or solid picks.

        Thinking

        Payet
        Ayew
        Ings
        Depay
        Cech

Well, can't really argue with that!

But I mean more like avoiding players with a plum opening fixture but then tricky ones to follow - their ownership will be highly inflated for GW1 but then there's a good chance that, even if they score ok, that people will still sell them, and therefore they are a risk - Everton players fall into that category this year - and maybe others. Or avoiding players who could be golden but might not play - like Walcott for example. He should be well backed for GW1 but if he doesn't make the starting XI then people will sell in droves - again a risk. That's the kind of thing I mean.

      - 1 solid defender to play every week. Most likely CHE og ARS.
      - Either start with Aguero, or have cash to upgrade to him after a week or 2.
      - One 4 mill def, one 4,5 mill mid, and one 4,5 mill (leave as little cash as possible on the bench)

Manchester United have no intention of budging from their £35m valuation of David De Gea – despite him having only 12 months left on his contract – and insist they have yet to receive a formal offer from Real Madrid for the goalkeeper. (Daily Mirror)

Manchester United will use Jonny Evans as bait in a bid to lure Everton star Seamus Coleman to Old Trafford. The Toffees insist Coleman is not for sale and that United are wasting their time making a bid for the Republic of Ireland international. But United bosses remain hopeful of landing Coleman and are set to tempt the Toffees with a cash offer plus Evans in a bid to secure a deal. (Daily Star)

Stoke chiefs have told Chelsea they want one of their fringe players on loan – on top of the Blues’ improved £8million offer for Asmir Begovic. Jose Mourinho wants the Bosnian keeper as back up to Thibaut Courtois to cover Petr Cech’s departure to Arsenal and Begovic wants to move to Stamford Bridge. But Stoke want winger Victor Moses, 24, forward Patrick Bamford, 21, or 19-year-old midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan as part of a deal. (The Sun)

Chelsea want to sign Stuttgart defender Antonio Rudiger this summer although the 22-year-old would prefer to stay in Germany, the player's agent has claimed. (London Evening Standard)

Tottenham are to launch a bid for Everton midfielder James McCarthy. The Ireland ace is frustrated at Everton who have yet to approach him about discussions over a new, revised contract, and Spurs are ready to make an offer for him. (Daily Mail)

Southampton and Marseille have made counter offers for Aston Villa target Idrissa Gueye. The Lille midfielder was poised to join Villa after Lille accepted a £9million offer but Saints and Marseille are understood to have bid £10m. (Daily Mail)

Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Dennis Praet, the highly rated Belgium international who is also attracting interest from Southampton and Everton. Praet is set to leave Anderlecht this summer for a fee in the region of £10m and Villa have made an inquiry about the possibility of making an offer for the midfielder. (Guardian)

West Ham have made a move for exciting Argentine playmaker Manuel Lanzini. The 22-year-old plays for the Al Jazira club in the United Arab Emirates. The Hammers are seeking a loan deal for next season with an option to buy him if he impresses at Upton Park. (Daily Mirror)

Middlesbrough are looking into the possibility of launching a hugely ambitious bid to sign Stewart Downing. Boro’s local rivals Sunderland had a £6million bid knocked back earlier this summer. And the Championship side would make Downing the best paid player at the club and are willing to offer him a four-year deal. (Daily Mail)

Of course! In what way? I thought Steph ran that game to perfection, completely ruining them if they left him open and always feeding the free man when he was doubled. J.R. certainly made it interesting late though!

Steph was ridiculously good throughout. Killer passes, big 3s. Simply unstoppable and he deserved it.

Yep the J.R. show is what I'm talking about. Gap was reduced to 4 points and I actually cheered for Cavs hoping for OT 😆 In the end, Cavs just couldn't deny the inevitable.

I think Klay will. He's just a ridiculous shooter. I think Draymond may struggle a bit, especially with his shooting. He was abysmal shooting in the Finals. But then again there's far more to his game than that, but I think people will leave him open far more than they have been this season.

Spot on. Him and Steph coached by Kerr was like a match made in heaven.

I still think Draymond will get even better. Given his knack for triple doubles, I'm sure looking at drafting him early lol

Oh everyone will be looking to draft him early haha. Just think he won't be as much of an unknown anymore so coaches will work out ways to minimise his impact. Although with Steph and Klay to look out for too that may not be very possible lol

They'll certainly be in the mix. Lance really needs to get his head out of his own arse though.

Parker, Green, Kawhi, Aldridge, Duncan would be a hell of a lineup, with the usual reliable bench.

It's basically if he wants money and stay in his already-owned home with no chance of winning anything then it's the Lakers, if he wants to win something then it's the Spurs and if he's a complete numpty then he'll join the Suns.

Honestly have no idea what their recruitment method is tbh.

Lol, no way Marseille has bid £10M for Gueye. 10 million _euros_ at max. Southampton possibly yes, but I reckon it's then between them and Villa.

Villa already got Richards, if they also get Gueye and Praet that shows intent to much better football than what they did this season. Gueye is a very useful player in midfield and Praet is a much wanted prospect and excelled in CL last season playing in a tough group, against bigger clubs for a relatively weak Anderlecht. Consistently strong and stood out when Anderlecht was really unlucky to lose to Arsenal at home. Looking good for Villa, but I'm surprised if nobody else is in contention for Praet.

I've come up with a good Spanish fantasy eleven which would do well:
    Adrian 5.0 (Robles 4.5)
    Azpillicueta 6.5 Ramos? 6.5 Muniesa 5.0 Monreal/Bellerin 5.5 (Amat 4.5)
    Silva 10 Fabregas 10 Mata 9 Cazorla 9 (Gil 4.5)
    Bojan 6.0 Ayoze 5.5 (Deulofeu 5.5)

That works out at 97 million so I could replace to Amat with Moreno possibly to have a better bench option.
I would have put Costa in but I needed those 4 midfielders

Actually Adrian would be 5.5 but there's lots of the budget left.

It seems a bit unusual that those of us who have been on here all summer, day-in, day-out, have the most relaxed attitude to the game opening. Whereas people popping up after a month or two off seem much more desperate to get started.

You'd expect it to be the other way round, really.

Part of me is dreading it opening, this place has been great for the last month or so, it's just going to be awash with RMTs in a week.

Same, I like to be optimistic and believe the game will open roughly around the same time as it has done for the past 4 seasons. Somewhere between the 15th and 20th giving us another 2 weeks or so.

    Kos - Cresswell - Soares - Holebas - Elphick

click on the green arrow to up vote someone's post. You can do this when you come across a post that you deem to be of value and this helps highlight valuable posts for others.

Additionally if you look at the top of the comments just below the main article there is a box with the words 'sort comments by' Date. You can change it to 'sort comments by' discussion rating. This automatically brings forward the most up voted comments to the first page. Its a great way to catch up on the best posts in a given article.

Re: Holebas to Watford. My very brief scouting report is that he's very offensive, quite the liability from a defensive point of view (think PVA) and might be on some FKs depending on the rest of the quality in the side.

Agreed - I think he is a fantastic Fantasy asset, similar to Fuchs for Leicester.

A real coup for Watford signing him.

If he plays for Watford I'm thinking he has to be 4.0 to be of any interest to me for GW1.

I think FPL would've dropped a massive clanger if he is 4.0. 4.5 seems right and possibly still worth it as he loves to attack

Is it right that larger richer (and better) clubs get automatic spots in the CHAMPIONS league even though they are not champions ahead of teams who are actually champions of there respective leagues? Surely this only results in maintaining the status quo of who the large clubs are and hinders teams from smaller countries as there is no way they can guarantee their prospective signings champions league football.

    1. Marknlard
      • 16 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

Yes, that is true. Although any team that is from a league big enough to have more than one automatic Champions League spot is not going to be competing for the same players as a team from a small league where the champions have to pre qualify.

In other words, a player is not going to choose Real Madrid over the Welsh league champs because of CL football.

There are teams at the bottom end of automatic qualification and top end of non automatic qualification who may be after the same player. For example I don't believe Scotland gets an automatic spot any more.

Well Glasgow Celtic I think would aspire to get champions league quality players but have to qualify. In recent history they would have players who would be at that level such as Henrik Larsson. I am just saying really that champions league system unfortuatley has little to do with being champions any more. Bit of a shame. But admittedly I am sure it does result in better quality football

            1. Marknlard

I'm not a big fan of the CL being set up for the big teams. But to use Celtic as an example, I think there's more there than just them having to pre-qualify for the CL. They are competing with Championship clubs for players at the moment, not even Premier League clubs.

I've just been trying to find the co-efficients to find out where the boundary is between group qualification and pre-qualification and it's actually pretty hard to find.

I agree with you. It is the principle of the thing really. How can they call it a champions league though when it is weighted against many of the champions?
