This was no ordinary Fantasy Premier League (FPL) launch. The usual noise and bluster, the regular scramble for team IDs and early “Rate My Team” requests, was magnified by some far-reaching changes that gave us plenty to consider on the opening day.

While we’ve already presented some initial views on the three new “Chips”, the more subtle changes to the Bonus Point System (BPS) may have slipped under the radar.

For the uninitiated, the BPS system is the calculation used to govern the award of FPL bonus points – the points allocated to the “best” players in any given match.

The system uses a variety of Opta data which measure player actions on the pitch and allocates a score to each action – either positive or negative. These scores are then totalled with the top three ranked scores earning bonus points.

Today’s launch revealed some slight tweaks to this BPS scoring system which will have some impact on how the Bonus Points are allocated for the coming season.

We’ve already been running a Hot Topic on the matter throughout the afternoon but, for those who have missed this additional update, here’s the skinny…

BPS Decrease For Pass Completion
2 BPS points awarded for 70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 3)
4 BPS points awarded for 80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 6)
6 BPS points awarded for 90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 9)

BPS Increase For Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI)
1 BPS point is now awarded for every 2 CBI (instead of every 3).

BPS Increase For Tackles (net)
2 BPS points awarded for every Successful Tackle (net) (instead of 1 BPS point).

BPS Increase for Saves
2 BPS Points awarded for every Save (instead of 1 BPS point).

First Impressions

We will delve into the potential impact of these changes in more detail via a Members article. However, immediately there are some obvious considerations served up.

For starters, goalkeepers will receive double the BPS rewards for the saves they make. This will have clear ramifications, making shot-stopping performances all the more likely to earn bonus recognition. In turn, this could reduce the Bonus Point appeal of defenders in sides that concede shots on target.

Undoubtedly, this will compound the clamour for cheaper goalkeeping options, with the likes of Costel Pantilimon and the custodians in the promoted sides boosted in our thinking.

Pantilmon may even have provided the catalyst for this change.

In Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates in Gameweek 37, the Romanian put on a superb one-man display of defiance, making eight saves on the night. He failed to win a single Bonus Point.

Instead, the BPS favoured Arsenal’s defenders who, in truth, were more intent on bursting forward in desperate search of a winning goal than keeping Sunderland at bay.

Indeed, the reduction in BPS for pass completion may also have been considered as a result of this very match.

The likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker were promoted in the BPS that night, not least by their pass completion – that pair, along with Hector Bellerin, all earned nine BPS for passing. Pantilmon earned just eight BPS from his saves.

Arsenal’s defenders will certainly require some further examination in the light of these changes. Both Mertesacker and Koscielny easily break 30 passes per match and both earned 89% pass completion over the season: clearly they will take a BPS hit as a result of these changes.

While they will take the hit there, the centre-backs will at least benefit from the hike in BPS for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI).

Dominant centre-backs may now come to the fore once again, having spent a season somewhat in the shade of the raiding full-back in Bonus Point terms.

Full-backs will be somewhat boosted by the increase in BPS awarded for net Tackles Won but the suspicion is that this will not level out the CBI increase and will result in full-backs, particularly those who were also reliant on completed passes, drop below their centre-back team-mates in the BPS pecking order.

There are, of course, implications for attacking players. However, while the likes Yaya Toure and Cesc Fabregas have earned handsome BPS returns via their passing prowess, it’s fair to say that there are other major factors at play when calculating their match tallies: goals and assists will remain king.

Just hours after absorbing the BPS changes, our impression is that it is clearly defenders and, of course, goalkeepers, who will feel the real impact of these tweaks.

However, this is a subject that will be treated to far more conjecture and insight in the next few weeks, not least on these pages.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Shakey defense but I don't invest in the backline until after my WC. How you would rate this team?

    Kasper Speroni
    Williams Huth Mings O'Shea 4.0
Hazard Sanchez Di Maria Yaya 4.5
    Costa Sakho Berahino/JRod

Lots of doubts in there. I'd start with Mata over Di Maria, Özil over Sanchez, and leave the rest. Without Sanchez and Di Maria playing you're already down to only two good midfielders, and that's a problem. You can change back to them when they settle in the lineup.

From around 28 games, 26 goals and 10 assists from Aguero last year.
Expensive but always a great captain option which is important.

First honest go at it, would like some feedback.

    --------------------Schmeichel | Hamer-------------------

    Ivanovic | Darmian | Cresswell | PvA | Alderweireld

    --Fabregas | Ozil | Mata | Henderson | Anya--

    -----------------Costa | Benteke | Sakho-----------------

Yea, I may well opt for more in the midfield. Hesitant to drop Ivanovic but that'd be the easiest way to beef up the mids and bring in another captaincy contender

            1. Zasa
              • 11 Years
              10 years, 5 months ago

I don't think dropping Ivanovic is even necessary IMO, it's just that it feels like that's 4atb team tbh. (7.0, 5.5m, 5.5m, 5.0m, 5.0m), that's at least 10m on the bench every week, you could easily scrape 1.5m there by downgrading any defender bar Ivan (definitely an option though for Azpi).

              Pva -> Coates/Matthews
              Toby -> 4.5m

Maybe Lescott in for Darmian if he comes in at 5.5m as well. West Brom's backline still holds great value. Would get rid of Toby for sure, just more reliable defenses elsewhere at that price IMO (Swans, Wba, Saints, Pool)

why not just get Cech and downgrade Merte to Huth. Be prepared to switch JRod to Berahino incase of any issues. Is Burke going to actually start? Wanyama could be switched with Anya.

Never been a fan of expensive keepers. Schmei will get more save points than Cech anyway. Mert is easily changeable to a MUN, LIV, MCI defender as well.

Not sure about Burke but thanks about Anya. I'll find him and bring him in.

Okay so second draft ready taking into account the Copa and first few fixtures how does this team look.

    Courtois Schemical

    Ivanovc Moreno Trippier Janmatt Francis

    Hazard Walcott Ritchie Depay Firmino

    Sakho Ings Deeney

If Court in goal get a 4.0 with him
      No Moreno
Overall a little expensive in defence
Both Depay and Firminio too punty to start, pick one, prob Depay
Needs one 'big one' up top for captain pick

Good point why is no one feeling Moreno Liverpool will score goals this year and he will defo start i get your points with Depay and firmino but im going to take the risk with those two can see both getting off to a good start but the defence is a little heavy maybe drop trippier 5.5 is a little pricey for him any suggestions on 4.0 keeper ?

Morning DZ. Good to be back to discussing real issues! If u have time any thoughts on my first stab at a squad?

    Schemichel/ Hamer
    Kosc/ Cedric/ O’Shea/ Mings/ 4.0 if poss if not a 4.5
    Mata/ Hazard/ Toure/ Punch/4.5
    Costa/Rooney/Sakho

    Worries-
    - No Ars attack.
    - Cedic can be any 5.0
    - A choice seems to be Haz and Toure vs Fab and Silva
    - Happy to lose Costa/ Rooney for Aguero but cash looks hard to find
    - Kosc could be Azpi if Luis goes

Anyway happy to be back with something real to discuss.

Changes? The WC change makes a lot of sense, stops an end of Jan template occurring. The others are gimmicks and overly complex. If the idea was to maintain the casual players interest they have failed. We on here will do well. As some already worked out if there is a double GW you wildcard a week BEFORE, then activate the coin (urgh) for the DGW. No casual will work this out and ‘we’ should put loads more distance over them. Awful changes overall and totally unnecessary.

Rant over, got to deal with. Bring on an unproductive morning at work!

It's looking very good. Love the Yaya pick. No Aguero and arsenal coverage may be a worry but Costa > Aguero, Rooney > Giroud, 4m defender deals with that. (Dont think there's any 4m defenders who start though)

Thanks. Was looking at that Giroud move. Was actually thinking of Rooney to him now. Saves 1.5. Would ten just need another .5 for the Costa to Aguero switch. Thanks

No Ars attack is a major worry but we need more info on Sanchez. Yaya is too much of a bargain to not punt on, especially if he is on penalties when Aguero is on rest. I personally picked Williams over Cedric. Keep Kosc. I really like your team but I'm leaning towards Di Maria over Mata 😉

Defence is ok, even if you don't have a player from any of the top 10 clubs.

Sanchez might not play due to copa america.
Di maria is in limbo atm.
      Yaya is a has been

Costa is good but likes a yellow card too often.
Sakho has Arsenal away the first game
      JRod might not play
      Berahino is also in limbo.

      Hope I wasn't too harsh.

Balanced team but no Aguero 🙁

    Pantilimon
    Ivanovic Koscielny Morgan
Ramsey Chadli Silva Hazard (C) Mane
    Sakho Lukaku (v)

    Bench: Williams, Richards, Graham, Hamer

I'm tempted to not read too many RMTs for fear of biasing myself. I'd like to try and maintain some independent thought and not succumb to the groupthink. Tempted, but it will never happen. I am weak.

After posting my comment above, I started reading further up the page and I see my first draft (built without looking at any FFS comments) has quite a few of the same names as the RMTs here. Maybe the template will be difficult to avoid...

Early thoughts on when to use your chips? All have to be around dgws don't they? Maybe the 2-5-3 being the exception and just used when the stars align and your 8th attacker has a great fixture and 3 of your defenders out or rubbish fixtures.

2nd WC used the week before a dgw.

Bench boost for a massive DGW where almost everybody has two games (incl your bench). Ideally WC the week before.
Triple captain on a small DGW, or for Aguero versus Tottenham 🙂
Agree with the 2-5-3. I may not even use it, all it gives you is a 5th mid instead of a defender - might give you like 5 pts extra!

      1. Amateur Pundit Zan
        • 12 Years

It's going to be pretty standard approach amongst the ffs community and other serious players. Would have been more interesting if they banned it for dgw though tbh I don't really like the rules do anything that negates them is a good thing

    3. the cromulent one
      • 12 Years

The 2nd wildcard and the bench boost must be used for the big dgw. It is an easy pile of points. But to take full advantage, you kinda need to have a good team value.

My current draft, with plans to WC first int break to bring in hazard, aquero and alexis

    Guzan ~ Myhill

Merts ~ Ivan ~ Cedric ~ Wollscheid ~ Pudil (does anyone know anything about his job security?)

    Fab ~ Hendo ~ Ozil ~ Ramsey ~ Pugh

    Costa ~ Rooney ~ Deeney

Gone heavy Arsenal as first 4/5 fixtures are juicy

You probably want Aguero for GW4 v Watford. Int break is after that.
Not sure about the Arsenal double up, unless one is Walcott (who will be closer to an out-and-out striker).

      They're juicy indeed.

Those delicate eggs in one basket. Problem with Asenal is points have the potential to be spread across a number of players: Ozil, Ramsey, Walcott, and Giroud. This is before Sanchez returns to the first team.

    Hello all.

I'd like Aguero from the start, but as he's enjoying some time off from his Copa America exertions its not going to happen.

Planning to start with Rooney, leaving enough £ in the kitty to transfer in Aguero for GW3.

I mean think about it, with no RVP...A fully fit Rooney will score more than a unfit Aguero and wont be much of a difference if so. But there is a 2.5 difference at the start that could be used for your whole team....

Lots of people seem to have Deeney - first 4 fixtures are eve, WBA, SOT, mci. Not much scoring potential in any of those! Could go the route of Burnley and fail to score in the first four.

Thinking of doubling up with Ritchie and Wilson to start with, then swapping to Deeney. Thoughts?

So many important updates in FPL..so much work I have in Office..couldn't even think of a proper team to make....

So with these bonus changes...Can we expect Carrick or Blind or Herrera to hog all the bonus points in United Matches? Does this give some advantage to CDM players and make Hazard a little bit less good of an option?

Confused, perplexed and baffled about all these rule changes and the
purpose of them. Prices seem ok, maybe with a seemingly limited selection of very cheap starters to help you put together a side. My team is a little shoddy at the mo. I will have to have a look at some rotations to find some value out there. Do I need to save these tokens for the rugby world cup or something?
