This was no ordinary Fantasy Premier League (FPL) launch. The usual noise and bluster, the regular scramble for team IDs and early “Rate My Team” requests, was magnified by some far-reaching changes that gave us plenty to consider on the opening day.

While we’ve already presented some initial views on the three new “Chips”, the more subtle changes to the Bonus Point System (BPS) may have slipped under the radar.

For the uninitiated, the BPS system is the calculation used to govern the award of FPL bonus points – the points allocated to the “best” players in any given match.

The system uses a variety of Opta data which measure player actions on the pitch and allocates a score to each action – either positive or negative. These scores are then totalled with the top three ranked scores earning bonus points.

Today’s launch revealed some slight tweaks to this BPS scoring system which will have some impact on how the Bonus Points are allocated for the coming season.

We’ve already been running a Hot Topic on the matter throughout the afternoon but, for those who have missed this additional update, here’s the skinny…

BPS Decrease For Pass Completion
2 BPS points awarded for 70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 3)
4 BPS points awarded for 80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 6)
6 BPS points awarded for 90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 9)

BPS Increase For Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI)
1 BPS point is now awarded for every 2 CBI (instead of every 3).

BPS Increase For Tackles (net)
2 BPS points awarded for every Successful Tackle (net) (instead of 1 BPS point).

BPS Increase for Saves
2 BPS Points awarded for every Save (instead of 1 BPS point).

First Impressions

We will delve into the potential impact of these changes in more detail via a Members article. However, immediately there are some obvious considerations served up.

For starters, goalkeepers will receive double the BPS rewards for the saves they make. This will have clear ramifications, making shot-stopping performances all the more likely to earn bonus recognition. In turn, this could reduce the Bonus Point appeal of defenders in sides that concede shots on target.

Undoubtedly, this will compound the clamour for cheaper goalkeeping options, with the likes of Costel Pantilimon and the custodians in the promoted sides boosted in our thinking.

Pantilmon may even have provided the catalyst for this change.

In Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates in Gameweek 37, the Romanian put on a superb one-man display of defiance, making eight saves on the night. He failed to win a single Bonus Point.

Instead, the BPS favoured Arsenal’s defenders who, in truth, were more intent on bursting forward in desperate search of a winning goal than keeping Sunderland at bay.

Indeed, the reduction in BPS for pass completion may also have been considered as a result of this very match.

The likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker were promoted in the BPS that night, not least by their pass completion – that pair, along with Hector Bellerin, all earned nine BPS for passing. Pantilmon earned just eight BPS from his saves.

Arsenal’s defenders will certainly require some further examination in the light of these changes. Both Mertesacker and Koscielny easily break 30 passes per match and both earned 89% pass completion over the season: clearly they will take a BPS hit as a result of these changes.

While they will take the hit there, the centre-backs will at least benefit from the hike in BPS for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI).

Dominant centre-backs may now come to the fore once again, having spent a season somewhat in the shade of the raiding full-back in Bonus Point terms.

Full-backs will be somewhat boosted by the increase in BPS awarded for net Tackles Won but the suspicion is that this will not level out the CBI increase and will result in full-backs, particularly those who were also reliant on completed passes, drop below their centre-back team-mates in the BPS pecking order.

There are, of course, implications for attacking players. However, while the likes Yaya Toure and Cesc Fabregas have earned handsome BPS returns via their passing prowess, it’s fair to say that there are other major factors at play when calculating their match tallies: goals and assists will remain king.

Just hours after absorbing the BPS changes, our impression is that it is clearly defenders and, of course, goalkeepers, who will feel the real impact of these tweaks.

However, this is a subject that will be treated to far more conjecture and insight in the next few weeks, not least on these pages.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The reason for these rule changes is to keep people interested in the game for longer. They are for the casual who tends to lose interest during the season, not us hard-outs.

I believe the changes will help maintain interest because most people don't get excited by making one transfer on a weekly basis. Having 5 chips available to be used wisely during the season might mean people hang on and stick it out longer than normal. The chips give hope to people who have fallen behind (possibly false hope but hope none the less), and they add variety to a game that can become tedious for a casual player. The lack of a January WC destroys the January template and this will encourage them to believe they can bridge the gap.

Right now we cant judge whether these changes are a success or not. Overall numbers of people maintaining interest and playing the game throughout the season will be the ultimate judge.

Agreed. The fall out rate is too high in this game from the developers point of view.

Well said Ryan... I also feel this is an attempt to reduce dead teams...

But it's seems like giving some toys to a child, though I am not against the chips as such!

Toys to a child is a good analogy. When you think about it, us hard outs are like the wise adults of FPL knowing all the strategies. Those with only a slight interest in the game (casual if you like) could do with more incentives to stay interested.

I love the new rules and I don't consider myself casual.

Casuals will use hem all in a row though. I can't wait to see the FPL discovery statistics of how many players are out of chips and used their wildcard by week 4.

Yes but at the very least there is the second WC which they will probably use in January when we won't use ours till a DGW. So that might give them some encouragement to go until the first DGW at least when we finally blitz them.

I like the new rules too, keeps the game interesting for us as well because it means we have to think of new strategies. It will keep us on our toes.

I agree it is probably done with the aim of reducing the number of dead teams and that is no bad thing. But I think they could have made more interesting choices that opened up more strategies instead of reducing them (as is the case with wildcards).

No, we just assume there are less strategies, where in truth the only strategy we have lost is the choice of when to play a WC early or late. I'd argue we have gained more strategies than what we have lost. No more January template team is also a massive gain.

    Schmeichel, Speroni
    Koscielny, Cedric, Matthews, Cameron, Francis
    Fabregas, Walcott, Mata, Mane, Albrighton
    Rooney, Benteke, Gomis

    1m ITB

If needed can do Mane -> 6/6.5 and get Aguero(when fit) in place of Rooney or Hazard in place of Fab.

Not bad if that's the route you want to go down. I don't like Gomis, he had an awful ppg last season and a difficult opening fixture. Personally I think starting without both of the best players in the league is verging on suicidal! 😀

will Butland play? A lot of choices at that 4.5. Might say the same about Cresswell at 5.5 (clyne)

Wilson is interesting if you are 3-5-2 some old man injuries and he might be the next Kane. IMO GL

It's pretty solid, I would definitely reconsider Milner and even Yaya as I think there are better options out there in the likes of Sigurdsson, Mata, Cazorla etc but I'd consider Yaya, Milner and Rooney --> Mata, Wanyama and Aguero or something like that.

GK - Close to the best pairing imho.
Def - long tail there. Hard to see who the second nailed on defender against any team for you will be
Mid - better more attacking mid options around millers price, starting with Henderson prob on pens
Fwd - Think deeney probably stronger option than callum up front otherwise sound.

Going to be difficult for you to make the Rooney to aguero move without wildcard

I'd be wary of Boruc as I think Federici is the better keeper. I also think you need another 4.5m defender instead of a 4m. I'd say Ritchie is slightly overpriced and I do not like Gomis but you clearly know what you're doing 😉

Boruc proven at prem league level, was instrumental in their promotion, was one of their first signings when promoted and fed a liability at times

I'd say he's safe as houses

And Boruc isn't a liability at times?!? 😉

Maybe, he'll probably start out in goal at least. As a former Reading season ticket holder I've seen quite a bit of Federici and don't think he'd settle for a bench role at the age of 30... he's just as good as Boruc imo.

GK - Boruc a good pick. How long Foster our Re Myhill?
Def - awesome to see Ivan but concerning to see 4 newcomers we've not seen fill 2 spots. Hutch is surely the best 4.5 and should be there
Mid - nice differential mid. Mane will definitely be a POD against regulars at 8.0 and finding the extra cash for silva is smart if going without aguero
Fwd - I can't see Giroud playing 90mins anywhere near as much with a (temporarily) fit Walcott. Not convinced gomis but at least you have 3 starting forwards from strong sides unlike most

Pants fixtures are so good I don't think you need a back up goalkeeper especially as you already have a LEI defender. I'm not sure if Bellerin is nailed. Midfield looks good if you're keen on Henderson. A little top heavy for my liking but I think it's a good team.

This although not entirely sure there will be a consensus on these, especially Kun. A bit like RVP a couple of seasons ago when Bale was 12m but was then sold, people were debating if they should go with RVP or share the wealth. In the end it was quite a mix and those who went without prospered (except GW 1 when RVP banged in 2 against the Swans).

Similarly now with Kun, no doubt he's a great option but you're unlikely to captain him in the first 3 so is he really needed? Maybe for his consistency, or maybe not. Don't think a consensus will be reached though.

          Hello AK! 🙂

At this point it's mostly speculative as pre-season hasn't started yet. I'd hope he plays centrally and I think he'll be more of a centre attacking mid than a secondary striker but as I say, I don't have a clue yet!

I'm steering clear. Secretly I have a really good feeling about this signing and think he may tear it up but I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to big money Liverpool players. It's a wait and see job. I'll probably reconsider in pre-season.

Not contracted, waiting for the new manager to be announced before he decides on his future.

No. Had a 1 year contract, currently a free agent though Leicester wanted him to re-sign. He still might, probably won't get decided till they get a new manager. Hopefully one that doesn't try to intimidate everyone in the district.

5.0 ITB For Ramsey & Costa > Sanchez & Aguero

If Lloris goes to United straight swap for Pants.

        Thanks Fantacity.

I had Rooney over Benteke yesterday.Benteke's lethal and I've had him at the best of his times. I hope he stays at Villa, though I can't see it happening.

I like Benteke as a player too, but he blows hot n cold, and personally I got frustrated owning him. If he's hot from the start, I'll transfer him in

    Some stand-out cheap options:

    Ki Sung-yeung (5.5)
    Grealish (5.5)
    Cabaye (if he's less than 7.5 he's a bargain)
Wanyama (4.5 - nailed if Schneiderlin leaves)
    McCarthy (EVE - 5.0)
    McLean (5.0)

Grealish not cheap imo. Interested in the Cabaye situation though, as should be more like 7m.

Thinking sideways on this, whichever one gets the 'Gerrard' role and therefore pens, leaves the other to roam further forward and therefore might end up a more interesting attacking option ... what do you think?

Great news! I have him in my current draft.

I am collecting thoughts of Pool fans on Firmino. What do you think? Where will he be playing? Center, Wing or Up-top as a secondary striker?

    Azpi, Koscielny, Huth
    Hazard, Ramsey, Mata, Richie
    Costa, Sakho, Giroud

    Myhill, Wanyama, Ward, Yoshida

I've seen the team lists, and there is not going to be a £4m starter, unless injuries of course.

      As to your team:

*Get rid of Yoshida, Gardos is probably ahead of him in the pecking order, and they'll anyway buy a CB. Rest four are good.
*I don't like Ramsey at all, don't think he is really nailed-on and think Henderson/Herrera are better options (said below).
*Safe striker options, unless Arsenal sign a new striker.

      7/10

I think Henderson and Herrera have been priced £7.0 each just because of their deeper position, and I think they will have better season than Ramsey, who is not even nailed-on.

Especially have locked in Herrera in my GW1 team, with Fellaini suspended, no way he is not starting the season.

Ramsey will play almost every game imo and will do better than both of those. I agree though that both Herrera and Hendo will have good seasons and score relatively well.

Well, we agree to disagree on the Ramsey point though. Ramsey has competition in CM (Cazorla/Wilshere) and in RM (Walcott/Ox) - Coquelin, Ozil and Sanchez are starters in midfield.

I'm not saying Ramsey is not first-choice, but we have the depth to give him games off, and Wilshere or Ox are no bad players to have as 2nd choice.

Yes, I think he has a very good eye for goal, and currently, the only United player nailed-on in central midfield. All that for just £7m.

Happy that fpl is up. Happy with the new changes..though the price generally is lower than i wish they would be.

Though the minimal transfers done by the top 4 mean that its pretty pointless to really make a team now

One thing the new BPS system is making me think its that Coquelin will be the new Shane Ferguson. Could see him picking up 5-6 points through playing and bonuses every couple of games
