Having racked up two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in 2013/14, Aaron Cresswell’s raiding displays persuaded former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce to splash the cash last summer. Immediately nailing down a starting berth, the left-back was one of only four outfield players to feature from start to finish in every one of his side’s league fixtures in the previous campaign.

Cresswell’s displays saw him named as the Hammer of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year in his debut top-tier campaign and his performances were noteworthy enough to attract reported interest from Premier League big boys Manchester City and Chelsea.

Having opted to sign a new five-year deal at West Ham over the last couple of weeks, Cresswell will be keen to push on under new boss Slaven Bilic this time around as the Hammers prepare for their final season at Upton Park…

Key Factors

    • Cresswell’s haul of attacking returns last term (two goal and four assists) was more than respectable yet didn’t quite do justice to his impressive underlying statistics. Comparing his goal threat to fellow defenders, only Branislav Ivanovic (11) fashioned more attempts on target than the Hammers full-back over the course of the previous campaign. Furthermore, Cresswell sat joint top – alongside Seamus Coleman – with regards to shot accuracy (47.4%) among those defenders that fired off at least ten attempts. Turning our attention towards his creative influence, Cresswell served up 34 chances for his team-mates, which was just two shy of Ivanovic’s total and only bettered by three other defenders.

    • Having tallied 129 points last time out, Cresswell has retained his 5.5 starting price. Only three teams (Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United) accrued fewer clean sheets than the Irons (nine) in the previous campaign, so unless Bilic’s arrival engenders a substantial improvement on the defensive front, Cresswell’s value lies in his attacking potential. The fact that the former Ipswich Town man never pushed past the 5.7 mark last season and ended with a mere 5% ownership suggests he could become a differential to watch in that mid-price bracket, should he be overlooked once again.

    • Beyond a flirtation with the top four berths at the halfway point of the season, West Ham’s promising campaign fell apart. Their greatest shortcoming was a severe lack of goals, given that the final 16 league matches of Sam Allardyce’s reign harvested just nine. With Bilic at the helm, however, the Hammers are likely to be adopt a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 set-up – crucially, the former Croatia manager, who’s been stressing the importance of attacking with fluidity and numbers, favours inverted wingers, which should afford Cresswell license to maraud forward and provide the width, thus enhancing his attacking prospects.

    • Notwithstanding a trip to London rivals Arsenal in Gameweek 1, West Ham’s start to the new campaign throws up some enticing match-ups. Visits to Liverpool (Gameweek 4) and Manchester City (Gameweek 6) should also prove stern tests, yet the remaining six fixtures up to Gameweek 9 (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) all present decent opportunities for clean sheets.

The thing with West Ham if there is ever a time to own their players it's weeks 2, 3 and 5. So I'm probably starting with 2 of them.

Siggy is tried and trusted but seemed to struggle getting results without Bony towards the end of last season. Chadli has the potential to surprise, Mane's price won't adhere to his output, so I'm going with the newcomer

Thoughts on this with 0.5m ITB.

    Ruddy Fabianski
    Ivan Cedric Toby O'Shea Huth
    Fab Mata YYT Hendo Grealish
    Costa Giroud Deeney

Easy to get Kun in but not the same with Haz.

Wouldn't touch Grioud. Don't think he will be nailed this year. IMO Ozil, Ramsey and Walcott (depending on pre season) are better options from Arsenal.

Mata faces rotation (at some point) as well. Would go for Rooney from United right now.

Like YYT, Hendo and Grealish although I would downgrade the latter to a 4.5 (Wanyama?).

In terms of captain choices I would get Kun (like you're planning on) and Haz in there. Maybe downgrade Ivan to Azpi if Luis is sold? Their points per million spend was fairly close last year.

Would go 8.5 for keepers. Kasper and Hamer maybe? Rotation = frustration imo.

Who's the best Southampton attacking player? I'm looking at Mane or J Rod but was unsure about J Rod's gametime.. Is he nailed and are his minutes likely to be restricted?

It's planning for The Sun game.. Not my main game, but one where I won the most money last year, and Soton potentially have 2 extra games plus nice starting fixtures to others as they count the Europa League play off round (If they get there of course).

It's more nuanced than that, a 2.5 save if you start with Fabregas could be the difference between Ivanovic and a 4.5, or Rooney and Aguero (if fit), or Benteke and Costa. I'll probably have Hazard, but I hate the idea of "essentials" and "season keepers".

i don't think i'd captain him more than once in the first 8 gw's looking at fixtures. means fabregas is potentially better value to start with atleast. Don't get me wrong though, I'll buy Haz at some point and probably never trade him out.

That is a popular perception. I am of the perception that he delivers to many 2's for the price tag of 11.5...great player but not essential nor season keeper.

Opinions between Ivan and Azpi? With the new BAPS system it seems Azpi could benefit more and for £1m less it will give you enough to stretch your team elsewhere.

I guess wait until the charity game against Arsenal to see who is playing but is there any chance Mourino may want to start Luis ahead of him?

Out and out defender I mean, Ivan/Zabaleta are obviously better going forward (though I think being left back hinders Azpilicueta's attacking potential). I love Azpilicueta, I think he's quality.

I am a Chelsea fan and I do agree. Azpilicueta's better than Ivanovic. Terry's aging and losing his pace and that's why Mou plays Azpi there on the left to cover Terry and practically have 3 defenders at the back all the time, giving Ivanovic some freedom to go forward

yeah, Ivan gets caught out of position quite a bit. Azpil offers more going forward as a RB than a LB as well. He's so good defensively.

I jumped on the Ivan wagon same time as most people last year and got burnt from his yellows and not keeping clean sheets. Azpi seems like the right way forward. Can upgrade deeney to sakho that way.

Azpi would be 7 if he was nailed on. Outscored 6.5 Cahill playing 500 minutes less last season.

Only two options: Ivan 7 = nailed on, Azpi 6 = not nailed on

Would I be right in saying that the Hat-tricks for Walcott and Mane late in the season boosted their price by 1m.

Nice to see top end keepers are cheaper this year. Does this mean people are going with Courtois/Hart/De Gea and a 4.0 or still 2 rotating?

For the first time ever in more than 10 years, I think I might not start with a 4.0 defender

u can still try on 4m players like burke as long as you have solid cover..and since there is no need to save a WC for dgw guess u could always wc early or use the all out attack chip to reduce the use of defenders

Also, here is a list of likely 4.5m starting mids:

    Barry
    King/Drinkwater
    Tetty/Mulumbu
    Wanyama
    Bentaleb

Smalling is United's most expensive defender! :-0

Vidic and Ferdinand must be turning in their graves...

He was made captain towards the end of last season so you'd think he'd be nailed on and he has a massive goal threat so it isn't without reason.

He's awful though. His blank look when on the ball frightens me.

    my team out of 10?

    Courtois - (Krul)
    Clyne | Cresswell | O'Shea | Morgan | Ward
    Hazard | Depay | Cazorla | Ki | Brunt
    Costa | Kane | Wilson

    0 in the bank

      Lots of issues here:
Why Krul if you have Courtois?
      West Ham (Cresswell) have Europa
Leicester (Morgan) without Pearson surely affects their CS prospects
Cazorla probably the worst of the Arsenal options imo
Costa along with Hazard considering the opening fixtures seems a poor choice imo

        Hi! thx for replying!

-I don't like single GK, it's just me, and adding 0.5 for a backup not a big deal for me (they rotate when CHE meet mci and ARS)

        - yeah u right, I'll probably pick another 5.5 def

        - the triple 4.5 is part of rotation, I probably will play 3 defenders every GW, so it's kinda flexible, I'll look for another

        - really? Cazorla seems best for me from last season, Ozil and Ramsey is just off to me, and I don't believe Walcott, Sanchez too expensive

        - they're no brainer, fixture proof
