Having racked up two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in 2013/14, Aaron Cresswell’s raiding displays persuaded former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce to splash the cash last summer. Immediately nailing down a starting berth, the left-back was one of only four outfield players to feature from start to finish in every one of his side’s league fixtures in the previous campaign.

Cresswell’s displays saw him named as the Hammer of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year in his debut top-tier campaign and his performances were noteworthy enough to attract reported interest from Premier League big boys Manchester City and Chelsea.

Having opted to sign a new five-year deal at West Ham over the last couple of weeks, Cresswell will be keen to push on under new boss Slaven Bilic this time around as the Hammers prepare for their final season at Upton Park…

Key Factors

    • Cresswell’s haul of attacking returns last term (two goal and four assists) was more than respectable yet didn’t quite do justice to his impressive underlying statistics. Comparing his goal threat to fellow defenders, only Branislav Ivanovic (11) fashioned more attempts on target than the Hammers full-back over the course of the previous campaign. Furthermore, Cresswell sat joint top – alongside Seamus Coleman – with regards to shot accuracy (47.4%) among those defenders that fired off at least ten attempts. Turning our attention towards his creative influence, Cresswell served up 34 chances for his team-mates, which was just two shy of Ivanovic’s total and only bettered by three other defenders.

    • Having tallied 129 points last time out, Cresswell has retained his 5.5 starting price. Only three teams (Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United) accrued fewer clean sheets than the Irons (nine) in the previous campaign, so unless Bilic’s arrival engenders a substantial improvement on the defensive front, Cresswell’s value lies in his attacking potential. The fact that the former Ipswich Town man never pushed past the 5.7 mark last season and ended with a mere 5% ownership suggests he could become a differential to watch in that mid-price bracket, should he be overlooked once again.

    • Beyond a flirtation with the top four berths at the halfway point of the season, West Ham’s promising campaign fell apart. Their greatest shortcoming was a severe lack of goals, given that the final 16 league matches of Sam Allardyce’s reign harvested just nine. With Bilic at the helm, however, the Hammers are likely to be adopt a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 set-up – crucially, the former Croatia manager, who’s been stressing the importance of attacking with fluidity and numbers, favours inverted wingers, which should afford Cresswell license to maraud forward and provide the width, thus enhancing his attacking prospects.

    • Notwithstanding a trip to London rivals Arsenal in Gameweek 1, West Ham’s start to the new campaign throws up some enticing match-ups. Visits to Liverpool (Gameweek 4) and Manchester City (Gameweek 6) should also prove stern tests, yet the remaining six fixtures up to Gameweek 9 (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) all present decent opportunities for clean sheets.

I have been confident about the Ashes for a decade, but that last series was such a massacre, and though this is on English soil, that Aussie attack looked pretty scary. Growing in confidence now though.

You're right, but faith is hard when you're an England supporter. I first started following test cricket in 2000, so was baptized into England getting creamed by Australia. There have been some good years, but you can never stop fearing humilation--and that's the point: getting beaten in a close test/series is one thing, but in the Ashes humiliation is always lurking.

Its a mentality thing. The aussies thrive when they sense weakness and fear. They aren't unbeatable, you have to shake them up. The best way to do that is to be unconventional and take it too them.

Way too much doom and gloom. Mitchell Johnson looked terrible in England last time and Ryan Harris had to retire. That's 2 of their biggest weapons last Ashes series.

Johnson did but he was terrifying in Australia, and Hazlewood is an excellent bowler, as is Starc when on form. The wickets not bouncing as much is a huge bonus for us, but I'm still scared about our lineup if Root doesn't fire. He gets out for a duck, as he so nearly did this time, and we're in big trouble.

Don't fear the Aussie batting lineup at all though.

Aussies have played this pitch wrong. You can't attack it the way they have. Just watching Haddin now flashing at shots like the others did earlier in the innings. Batting last is going to be very tricky.

They like flat batting tracks. Don't cope hardly as well with a seaming pitch, add in swing and they will start to look average.

      Seeing as it's you...

I don't like it much. Palace defence is an avoid for me, I'd pay 9.5 in total with Fabianski instead of Speroni and have a much better GK pair.

Bournemouth defence is an avoid too, Olsson is probably a better shout than Bassong (same club) and would rotate nicely with a Southampton defender (Cedric 5.0 maybe). Cresswell is too expensive to rotate in my view and Villa is an avoid but Stoke-Sunderland is another worthwhile pair (Coates and Bardsley maybe, both 4.5). By my reckoning all those defensive changes would be price neutral overall.

In midfield I think Mane is overpriced and I see the Walcott attraction but if he's not preferred to Giroud regularly it's a wasted 9.0. I'd replace them with a 8.5 and a 6.0 (maybe Mata or Eriksen and Puncheon or Ritchie).

Assuming enough cash is kept in hand for Aguero that would leave 1.0m spare for the forwards. I'd probably upgrade Rooney to Costa, Wilson to Sakho and have Jerome as my bench attacker. That would leave exactly 2.0 in the bank for Costa to Aguero whenever you like.

My team is very different by the way, I'm setting up for 4-3-3 and the structure is quite far away from what you are doing, quite a bit more spent on defence. Just trying to work around your basic ideas. It also depends when you plan to wildcard.

      Fabianski Schmeichel
      Mertesacker Cedric Olsson Bardsley Coates
      Cesc Ozil Silva Mata/Eriksen Ritchie/Puncheon
      Costa Sakho Jerome

2.0 in the bank. Something like that for a 3-5-2.

This is tremendous. Thanks for the effort Ruth. I also need to think about captaincy options and, as you say, not just the pure rotation but the quality of the defences of those rotations. Cheers again.

    Schmeichal (Hamer)
    Kos Cresswell, Targett (Vlaar, Mings)
    Haz, Walcott, Tadic, Puncheon, Anya
    Costa, Aguero, Igahlo

Targett - early punt whilst bertrand is out and if Vlaar moves to saints ill grab another 4
Punch - depending on Cabaye's price will cut
Aguero - I wont start with him, but trying to figure out a team where I can leave funds for him, most likely replacement will be Lukaku/Giroud

He has had massive groin issues (I don't think people realise this when they slag him off). I'd want evidence that he's truly shaken that off before investing.

What do you think about this defense line:

    Hart - Speroni
    Mertesacker - Cedric - Moreno - Alderwield - Richards

Thinking to do Moreno or Alder to Coates and buy another 5.5 def. But who?

Yesterday someone posted 5pounds moneyleague details. Who was that? Tnx

    Pantilimon
    Azpilicueta, Koscielny, Cedric, Morgan, Burke

    Aguero, Sakho, Deeney

Like it. I do think you should go Fabregas to United-midfielder. Chelsea's attack potential in the first few fixtures are low.

i dont believe in rotating keepers, just get burned too many times!

grab a 4.5 and stick em in for the season i say. Krul did well for me for 1st half last year, then switched to Schmeichel so it worked for me

In which case, judging by the loss of N'Zonzi and the pursuit of people like Shaqiri, I wouldn't be keen on Butland. I don't think Hughes sees his defence as his priority.

Good point this. Still out of Stoke, Leicester, Palace, Bournemouth, Norwich, Villa, Newcastle etc. who all have 4.5 keepers, Stoke's would probably be my pick of the bunch.

    @ShipsonTrev

Who's a better buy FPL-wise personally? Ritchie or Wilson? And do you think you'll be able to pull in around 10-11 clean sheets this season?

    1. Shipstontrev
      • 16 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

Ritchie is the better buy, he can assist as well as score. Clean sheets is a difficult one, as Premier League strikers don't give you a second chance. I'd say 8-9 rather than 10-11, unfortunately. If you're still looking for a Bournemouth defender, go with Francis for his assist potential.

    Second draft.

    Schmeichel - (Flappyhandski)
    Koscielny - Azpilicueta - Cedric - (O'Shea - Burke)
    Silva - Walcott - Ozil - Mane - (Bentaleb)
    Beteke - Rodriguez - Bony

Be interested to hear opinions on whether bony plays or not.

    Butland/Ruddy
Ivan - Moreno - Mertesaker (Mings, Morgan)
Firmino - Walcott - Yaya - Puncheon (Wanyama)
    Rooney - Costa - Sakho

    Until later..

What's the general consensus on rotating keepers?

Personally, I don't like it. I like to have one keeper at 4.5 mil and preferably their 4.0 partner. Max i'd go is 5.0 and am tempted by Lloris this year, who seems excellent value into what I believe will be a much improved Spurs backline.

Last year, had Krul for 1st half of season then switched to Schmeichel, so worked for me just having 1. I have found in previous years I always get burned trying to play the fixtures with keepers!

No hard and fast rules this year. Elite GKer's are priced at only 5.5 and as is the case at Chelsea its a massive saving compared to Ivan/Terry
