Last year I put together a “Points Per Appearance” analysis spreadsheet and it went down well so here is another one. I will try to update it weekly or as and when a new batch of transfers arrive.

For the new signings and the promoted clubs’ popular players I have worked out how many points per appearance  they would have averaged if the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points  system was applied to their respective leagues.

I know it is not the most accurate but it is still interesting to read. It gives you an idea of how many points each player could manage if they hit the ground running come August. Bear in mind that some leagues are easier than others and bonus points have not been taken into account (which do make a difference).

Goalkeepers are not included due to complication with saves, but defenders, midfielders and forwards are. Information about the new arrivals’ transfer and price are on the spreadsheet to give a little more data for you when analysing. In terms of points goals, assists, clean sheets and yellow cards are taken into account. Red cards are ignored as I thought they were unnecessary and didn’t transfer from season to season.

I have assumed each appearance is over 60 mins, resulting in two FPL points. I have counted every substitute appearance as half so it is fairer (obviously rounding up so no .5s).

The number of clean sheets that defenders and midfielders have is in relation to their new club. I worked out the number of clean sheets per match that each Premier League team managed during the 2014-15 campaign and multiplied that by their new signing’s number of appearances.

The value column allows you to compare which player is better value for money. I would advise only using this figure between similarly priced players as otherwise it is unfair. The higher the number the better the value. To obtain this number I multiplied the points per appearance by 100 and divided it by the price.

I hope you all find it useful and feel free to comment any thoughts or updates you would like!

i was looking at a highlight reel of Depay. He could be immense in this league. He has a lot going for him. When to buy him is what im struggling with

Cheers Puntmaster! I'm on Callum Wilson right now and nice to see he does well in this analysis. Adam Matthews also with a nice low number of yellows from a physical league

Adam Matthews certainly does look good. I am tempted with Jerome if he can nail down game time then he has the physicality to finally cut it at the top level!

Thx for repeating this trick from last year TPM. If memory serves me well, this approach flagged up the high potential of Pelle, Tadic and Janmaat amongst others, which contributed to my owning the first two named for that 8-0 thrashing of Sunderland.

Will you be attempting to handicap the respective leagues again like last year? Not sure where one realistically begins with that calculation though!

I might try and start the handicap thing. I found a way of doing it last year and could just use that again. It's so subject to opinion though! I'll have a look at it 🙂

Great idea, really useful way of trying to find an advantage. Hadn't even considered Matthews until now. Much appreciated.

Can we add Dmitri Payet into this? Bossed Ligue 1 last season, created the most chances in the top 5 European leagues...

Glad to see this back! Based on the spreadsheet last year, I picked Costa from the outset 😀
