After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

what do we think about Firmino.
willing to give him a try.
as usual at the beginning of season, punt or two can't hurt much.
think he'll do good, especially if he links up with coutinho well.

Throwing my first draft to the wolves. Please rip it apart with anything you see:

    Schmeichel Hamer
    O'Shea Mert Morgan Coloccini Mariappa
    Hazard Payet Ozil Depay 4.5
    Hooper Costa Rooney

    Enough to do Rooney>Kun itb

I wouldn't ask but I quite like it...

    Courtois / Krul

    Azp / Morgan / Francis / Alderweireld / Targett

    Wally / Mata / Ritchie / Cabaye / Hendo

Kane / Sakho / Aguero (prob start season with someone else)

Interesting idea for those without Ivan and Kun

Will we want that all out attack chip when we have a 4.5 enabler in midfield, seems like a waste

why not get 5 big mids for the first 2-3 GWs and aim to have 2 FTs GW 3 or 4

Then you play the all out attack chip on a good week and go 2-5-3, after this you sell one of your big mids to a 4.5 enabler and that should release funds to get Aguero in

I think so yes, they could be roughly equal for the BAPs for Ivan has the attacking threat

I'm starting with Ivan, Cesc and Costa, should get some points from that trio

It's not necessarily canvassing options, it's simply that this place often gets stuck in a loop of whatever the latest fad is (like right now it's having Ivan/Azpi and Kos because of BAPs) I like to try and generate actual discussion on FPL instead of 20 posts about the same thing.

Bingo. Am rocking a 3-5-2 with Deeney or Sakho on the bench at the minute, although they don't rotate well (Wilson would work better with Sakho).

GW1 fixtures aren't great for All Out Attack though. Think I'm going to wait and see.

yeah GW1 isn;t a good idea, but GW2 or 3 before you draft Aguero in could work if you wanted to do that.

Deeny and Sakho isn't really ideal for a 2-5-3 though

176 appearances in total for Werder Bremen, played 22 league matches last season and would have played more but was injured for 7 matches. Essentially, barring injury and a yellow card suspension, he was a nailed on CB and played every match available.

So many of the good players for the bottom 10/12 teams are mostly unheard of in England though...

And yeah the weekly roundup show is usually on ITV4 on a Monday night. 🙂 Agree on your points with Prödl and the Watford signings at the moment looking decent. 😀

Totally agree on Yaya...Howson is bothering me but you have Hendo. I don't know why everyone is spending on Clyne with those fixtures, but hey! Looks really well rounded though, almost too well rounded...you might want to downgrade some backups and upgrade your main 3 defenders.

Cabaye right footed, Punch left footed, going to be nice option for us this season, but not for us as Fantasy League managers 😉

Still think Yala over both this season (just a hunch)

Neither Delph nor Yaya are defensive midfielders. Both like running up the pitch. They would leave the back 4 even more exposed than they already are, no?

I guess so, in theory. I think one of them is capable of adapting, mind, probably Delph. Even so, can't get much worse than Fernandinho.

Can't say I agree on Fernandinho. I quite like him in fact. He had an up and down season last year (maybe the World Cup affected him?), but in his first season, he was exceptional. Many were talking about him being one of the best signings (not best value mind) in the league.

I think Delph would be a good signing for squad depth and English quota, but I don't think he'd be a starter. 🙂

that's why I like my formation.Fernandiho as the DM, box to box Delph next him and Yaya can play in the hole

It's certainly an option, but I do prefer Yaya deeper. He is known for his goals and runs, but I think the best thing about his game is his control in midfield. I also don't think he is that great as a 10. I think he is much better facing the play, and if you're playing with a 10, they have the best 10 in world football in Silva.

                My opinion! 😀
