Liverpool’s breathless start to the summer transfer window showed no sign of abating in the wake of Roberto Firmino’s £29 million switch to Anfield. The former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder – who became Brendan Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close season – recently shot to prominence with Brazil in the Copa America, netting the Selecao’s winner against Venezuela in the group stages of the tournament.

Discussing his move with the Hoffenheim official website, the 23-year-old vowed to nail down a starting berth with the Anfield outfit:

“First and foremost, I’m looking forward to the new challenge and I’m excited to see what the Premier League has to offer. Of course everything will once again be new to me at the start. I’m going to have to get used to a new playing style, but I’ll also get the opportunity to improve my game even further there. Obviously I’d like to establish myself as a starter in my new team and go on to celebrate a lot of success at Liverpool.”

The History

A Brazil native, Firmino was born in Maceio and started out at his local club, CRB (Clube de Regatas Brasil). Five years of training ensued, before he teamed up with Serie B (second tier of Brazilian football) outfit Figueirense in 2008. Firmino broke into the senior side in October 2009 and netted eight goals in 36 appearances during his one full season with the Hurricanes, who earned promotion into the top flight.

Firmino’s exploits in South America alerted a number of suitors across the Atlantic, with Hoffenheim shaking off the competition to land the midfielder on a five-year deal. Firmino joined at the midway point of the 2010/11 season and went on to net three goals in 11 appearances from an advanced central role.

Building on this solid foundation, Firmino tallied 11 goals and seven assists across the subsequent two Bundesliga campaigns. The 2013/14 season served up the greatest riches, though, with the Brazilian starlet amassing an impressive 16 goals in 33 league outings, ranking third in the scoring charts behind Marco Reus (30) and Robert Lewandowski (31). In addition, he registered 12 assists that term and bagged six goals in four cup fixtures.

Firmino’s final campaign at the Rhein-Neckar Arena produced ten goals and 12 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions. His laudable domestic displays were rewarded with a debut senior cap for Brazil in November against Turkey, which swiftly led on to his debut goal against Austria less than a week later. More recently, Firmino guided Brazil through to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a close-range strike against Venezuela.

The Prospects

With the signing of Danny Ings and now Firmino, Rodgers is clearly searching for a solution to Liverpool’s relative paucity of goals last term, given that the Merseysiders chalked up 49 fewer without Luis Suarez spearheading their attack. Aside from netting 33 times in 73 outings over the past two seasons, the Brazil international also created more chances (138) than any other Bundesliga player over that stretch and directly contributed to 45 goals in his previous 66 appearances – illustrating his creative prowess.

As for his potential role within Rodgers’ set-up, Firmino primarily operated as a traditional number ten at Hoffenheim but was also comfortable lining up on the left flank – with Germany’s U21 star Kevin Volland on the opposing wing – or employing his pace as the central forward in a 4-3-3. It’s worth noting, however, that all seven of his league goals last season arrived when he was deployed in “the hole”.

With Raheem Sterling looking set for pastures new, Firmino is likely to be handed a central support role behind a lone striker, though as we saw last season, that could be in a 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 formation. The former system could see him twinned with Philippe Coutinho in the advanced roles, with Ings or, potentially, transfer target Christian Benteke spearheading the Reds’ attack until Daniel Sturridge finally recovers from injury.

On that note, Firmino’s impeccable injury record would doubtless have been factored into Liverpool’s thinking in light of Sturridge’s recurring layoffs. The Brazil international has missed just one league outing in each of the past three Bundesliga seasons, which suggests he’s made of sterner stuff that the former Chelsea striker when it comes to avoiding knocks and niggles.

It’s worth noting that Firmino and Coutinho were handed three weeks off due to their recent showings in the Copa America and still have another week or so before they link up with their team-mates.

At 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though, Firmino’s reputation clearly precedes him. Given that Coutinho sets you back 8.0 and Jordan Henderson – who could well be handed spot-kicks – comes in at just 7.0 along with another new signing, James Milner, there are certainly more budget-friendly options in the Liverpool midfield.

Nonetheless, Firmino’s record in Germany suggests he could wreak havoc in his new surrounds and afford the Merseysiders a much-needed spark in the final third. Whilst the Reds’ first three away fixtures look tricky (sto, ars, mun), Rodgers’ side are handed four very obliging home matches (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) in the opening seven Gameweeks which more than atone for those road trips and could easily see the new boy hit the ground running.

    Best ManU option.

With the imminent acquisitions of Schneiderlin and Schweinstieger Manchester United's central midfield is really shaping up. A knock on effect of this is that there is now a very low risk of Rooney being deployed as a central midfielder.

With midfield competition now hotting up and Rooney as the captain is he now the best ManU option. Given the midfield players available surely he will only be deployed as a striker or number 10?

Where does Mata fit in? Will he be rotated?

Which Manchester United player(s) are you looking to start with to take advantage of their good run?

What will be the key issues you will be looking out for during ManU's pre season games?

If they don't sign striker than Rooney.

Also defence has to be highly ranked now. I could go with one of their defenders.

I think even with a striker though rooney could be the best. Surely he'd be nailed on as the number 10 when that new striker plays? I can't see Rooney being benched too often and now can't see him play further back.

I always somehow start with Rooney. All those quotes from LvG we need 20 goals a year striker and he has one in his squad. I don't know Jonty if they sign striker where Mata comes? He'll play winger? He is best when in no 10. Nevertheless I like Rooney as fantasy prospect especially with all those new CM signing. Definitely Rooney stock has risen .

If Depay gets free kick duty, he's the pick of the bunch. However, Rooney could pull rank as he does like to take them. Problem is, he's not in the same class when it comes to dead-balls

Alot of their clean sheets last season was because of De Gea. If he leaves I will not be so keen on Utd defenders

Mata might be rotated at some points, but i think he has less competition on the right, than there is on the left, with Di Maria/Depay/Young. Di Maria could also play on the right though, not sure he'll be used much in CM now with the latest acquisitions.

      A defender, most likely Darmian.

How Depay looks alongside his new teammates, how much gametime he gets, in comparison to the other wide men. Also how sharp Rooney is playing upfront.

Yep, Rooney is pre season is key. He can do a tireless job helping others - or just start hammering goals in. He's been so reliable in the past when in an attacking role so fingers crossed he can reclaim some of that Fantasy magic.

Early on yes. It'd be nice if there was less of a rotation threat from the likes of Young. ADM would be a massive threat though.

Rooney as a lone striker would be great. Mata's game time worries me, but I rate him higher than the other (non-Arsenal) 8.5s. Their defenders look good with their fixtures, but it's hard to fit one in.

Rooney will be in my team from the start. Nailed for 90 minutes, won't be playing midfield anymore and is up against 3 of his favourite opponents in the first 3 game weeks (TOT avl NEW). It's also hard to ignore Valdes at 5.0m if De Gea moves to Madrid.

Rooney's the best option if you can fit him in, but if I start with Aguero then I can't. I'll go with Mata if ADM leaves, if he stays I may avoid Utd completely.

Part of me wants to go Defender / Depay / Rooney but even I know that's too much.

Does anyone else think that, currently, without an additional striker bought, we may see Rooney in the 10 with Depay's pace being utilised up front? Something like:

      Schwein Schneid
      Mata Rooney Young
      Depay

Otherwise, yes I can see Mata moving into the 10 role, especially if ADM is sold. LvG will use Fellaini more as a plan B option I feel with Depay in the picture:

      Depay Mata Young
      Rooney

Thoughts? As you can guess, Depay is my Utd player of choice in my team...

cavani plays wide a lot, would expect him to do that in a 4-3-3 with depay/angel other side and mata in the hole

it would mean a double defensive pivot rather than a 4-3-3 with herrera though

two for every position is the dream if you want to challenge on all fronts

de gea/valdes (loris if former leaves)
      Valencia/Darmien Smalling/Jones/Rojo/McNair Shaw/Bling
      Schneiderlin/Schweinsteiger Carrick/Herrera
      Mata/Di Maria Fellani/Januzi Young/Depay
      Rooney/Wilson

that is now an incredible squad bar centre forward back up and a top quality centre back - but it IS a squad that can challenge on all four fronts

and one that presents a nightmare for FPL fans...

that said, I think Mata is nailed, LVG has sung his praises for six months and lamented how he couldn't get him in the team because of the lack of other players rather than his own form - it's all about the balance with LVG and I think this new team will be built around a forward axis of Rooney and Mata I really do. At least at first.

Hi mods. I have one suggestion. I see you've already started with articles for cheap and midprice and expensive defenders and defenders. What I miss? It is early pre season so we don't vote for captain in GW 1.

Poll. We need poll. Who is best mid price defender in example. Value and starting fixtures based, because we all think about starting team now. And let the lads vote. I think Mert or Creswell will win it. It will be really helpful. What the lads think about this?

No love for Theo? I know it's a risk but the upside is huuge. Will defo be in my team (as my only punt). Especially if Sanchez is rested a few weeks.

Locked in on doubble ARS? You could downgrade Caz or Ozil to Hendo and upgrade Ki.
Hendo on set pieces (+ pens) is a bargain although new signings might change things.

you need to make some better choices

bellerin, schlupp, barkley aren't guaranteed starters. I'd be wary of norwich attackers until they get a better striker. not convinced on diouf, but i have concidered him so I'll let you off for that one. 5/10

How is United likely to line up?
    Which formation will LVG use?
    DDG
    Darmian, Rojo, Blind/Jones, Shaw
    Schweini, Carrick/Schneiderlin
    Mata, Fellaini/Depay, Young
    Rooney

Blind, Carrick, Fellaini, Depay, Jones... to compete for places
I expect ADM to go to PSG

He's trimming well though isn't he. Rafa, Nani, Robin off means a lot of wage bills are gone.

Valencia has been listed as a defender this year, that is funny a couple of season ago Tony V was a great winger but slowly disappeared in the team and the managers played in in defence...

When he was bought we were very much a 442 team. Valencia is the kind of guy who stays out wide and doesn't cut in so he doesn't really work as a winger in a 433

This formation is quite defensive, that means nobody on the N°10 role.
Perhaps one of Herrera or Basti to have a bit of freedom to move

Nope. LVG prefers variations of a 4-3-3. If you noticed last season closely, while we have the ball, LVG likes forming inverted triangles on both sides of the field. This is where Depay Shaw and Basti will combine or Herrera Mata and Darmian on the other side.

The two #8's in this formation will keep bombing forward will the other #8 will stay back and so will the #6.

With such a squad, LVG has clearly so much to play with.
It also gives United squad depth with a good bench.
Pre season games will give us some clear indications

With players of the Basti mould, experience is all they need to control that game.

Have you seen the likes of Alonso, Pirlo, Lahm controlling games?

You don't need legs if you have passing ability and great reading of the game. And Basti is in the top bracket of mids.

24 year old Feyenoord captain, dutch international, deep-lying playmaker. Tenacious little guy (5ft 6). He's not going to replace Schneiderlin, as they are different kinds of players, but he will take Schneiderlin's place in the XI and probably his No. 4 shirt. You may have seen him come off the bench for Holland at the WC.

      I'm going for Ritchie.

Set pieces. 17 assists last season and 13 goals.

Good morning guys. Pretty happy with the balance here. Any suggestions and feedback is welcome:

    Speroni/Butland
    Merteskaer/Alderweireld/PVA/Huth/Mings
    Hazard/Walcott/Coutinho/Cabaye/Wanyama
    Rooney/Costa/Deeney

    Thankyou

Is Phil Jones nailed on? By my reckoning he should fair very very well under the new bps changes/

I see several Deeneys and Wilsons in RMT's. Austin scored 1 in his first 5 and Ings didn't get going till mid October. I will wait and see before picking Deeney or Wilson

Austin scored 2 in his first 5 fixtures, including the 4-0 loss to United.

You misread. 4-0 loss as in as part of the first 5 fixtures, so not scoring in that isn't so bad. Maybe i should've worded it better in hindsight tbf 😳

Been reading up abit on Deeney - he seems like a striker with supreme confidence in his ability and a touch of arrogance. Definitely has the right ingredients to get some goals in the PL.

    Draft #17:

    Schmeichel (Hamer)
Coates - Azpi - Mert (Oshea - Baker)
Fabregas - Walcott - Ramsay - Ki (Wanyama)
    Costa - Aguero - Sakho

    0.0tbh.

Have selected Fab to start hoping to make up for the early form i missed (and got w/ Hazard) last year. All provided Aguero is fit, if not Rooney + Hazard.

    Thoughts guys?

Could go Costa to Rooney and Ramsey to Hendo funding a Ki upgrade.

should give you a monster front 8, as long as you pick the correct 4.5s

        I wouldn't say monster.

        Hazard - Ozil - Mata/Depay - Ritchie
        Kun - Benteke - Sakho

i'm currenty going with courtois in goal with kos + 4 rotating 4.5s. so no, i don't think it's too weak - on the edge, let's say.

    hows this all?

    Panti
    Ivan, Cedric, Morgan, Prodl, Francis
    Fab, Wally, Ki, Hendo, Wanyama
    Rooney, Kun, Sakho

    £0.5ITB

Would really like Haz instead of Fab but can't afford him without big changes.

Nice team mate. Presume Ivan/Cedric will play most of the starting 10 games.

If Aguero starts the season, he will be in majority of teams so something will have to give in every squad. For now, might be good to also plan for an Aguero-less draft that takes 1-2 transfers max to get him in.

The only thing we can guarantee is that United will play 433 this season.

LvG is assembling a serious squad to challenge on all fronts this season.

    ----------------------------------------Valdes/Lindegaard/Johnstone-----------------------------

    -----Darmian/Valencia-----Smalling/NEW CB-----NEW CB/Jones-----Shaw/Rojo-----

    -----------------------------Schneiderlin/Blind-----Schweinsteiger/Carrick--------------------

    -----------------------------------------Herrera/Fellaini/Januzaj------------------------------------

    -----------------Mata/Di Maria-----Rooney/NEW ST/Wilson-----Depay/Young------------

That is a badass 25 man squad!! 3 signings to go!!

Sold: De Gea (Real Madrid) Rafael (Roma) Evans (West Brom) James (Championship?) Powell (Championship?) Van Persie (Fenerbache) Hernandez (Orlando City)

Loan: Varela McNair Blackett Lingard Pereira

the 3 central players don't really work like that. There is usually 1DM like Carrick then a RCM and a LCM in front. No #10

They very much do work like this, triangle up/triangle down.

Germany use this method so effectively with Kroos, Khedira and Schweinsteiger.
